Drug Dealing and The Wire
2008-09-01 01:28:00 In a prior post on Prostitution dolphin makes a good point about calling TPD about drug activity. Being part of Neighborhood Watch before, I listened to TPD officers tell us how the drug dealers operate, for example how they will keep their stash in a paper cup or paper bag in the weeds or gutter, rather than on their person. I did not get a full understanding of that until I watched the first season of The Wire. This show or The Corner should be required watching for NW members because it gives be very insights at to how the street level drug dealers operate.Thankfully we have better police department than that on The Wire.

2008 Catalunya Qualifying Report - Down To The Wire
2008-06-07 19:08:00 Qualifying practice at the Catalunya Grand Prix at Barcelona, Spain, got underway in warm, humid conditions, under overcast but dry skies. The weather has been like this all weekend, with rain overnight, and occasional smatterings during practice, rendering the track incredibly slippery. After Friday's crashfest, the riders were a little more circumspect this morning, especially once it started to rain with 15 minutes of the session to go. But the afternoon looked like staying thankfully dry. The riders took to the track to a man at the start of the session, working hard to find a race setup after the slippery track surface ruined times on Friday. All except Jorge Lorenzo, that is, who was forced to withdraw from the race after a big crash in Friday afternoon's second free practice session left the Spanish rookie knocked unconscious and out with severe concussion. Times dropped quickly, getting into the 1'43 bracket within 6 minutes, Dani Pedrosa being the first to hit that tar...

Bat Up: Woot Weads The Wire
2008-05-28 19:05:00 Every week in this space, we?ll take a look at the news and offer our own incisive blend of commentary, analysis, and poop jokes. The news you need, from a voice you can trust, in the 90 seconds you have to spare: that?s Woot Weads the Wire. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)?Wake Forest University will no longer require applicants to take the SAT and ACT exams, boosting a movement to lessen the importance of standardized tests in college admissions. Applicants will instead be judged on poise, grace, talent, and the all-important swimsuit competition. CHICAGO (AP)?The percentage of American children who are overweight or obese appears to have leveled off after a 25-year increase, according to new figures that offer a glimmer of hope in an otherwise dismal battle. An alternative theory is that the fat kids finally broke the scale. MONTERREY, Mexico (AP)?Police in northern Mexico say a 25-year-old man bit off more than he could chew when he allegedly stole a gold bracelet from an 8-year-old girl an...

The Wire Troll: No Hot-Dogging for this Kobayashi
2008-05-18 20:37:00 As we approach the two month mark of the 2008 season, it is beginning to be serious decision time for those of us in keeper formats. When do we acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, the 2008 season is not going to be one filled with glory? Yes, it’s a tough decision, but also an essential one. When analyzing your team and looking forward, be conservative. Miracles do happen, but they are also few and far between. Realistic goals and projections are essential when developing a plan of attack for the balance of the season. If 2008 isn’t going to be your year, the sooner that you accept that and move forward, the sooner you can start the process of building that championship caliber team for 2009. Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the potential waiver wire options heading into the long weekend. Masahide Kobayashi, Cleveland, RP: Up until Saturday, it was starting to look like Kobayashi was on the verge of claiming the closer’s role for the Tribe, a...

Wavering on the Wire- 5.15.08
2008-05-15 13:00:00 Pedro Feliz ? For years with the Giants, he was a useful fantasy player because he basically had eligibility at almost every position, with power to boot. This year, he was signed with Philly to be their everyday third basemen, unfortunately got off to a terrible start. For April he batted .218 with 3 home runs & 10 RBI. Since May 1st though, he?s been hitting .286 with 2 HR's & 6 RBIs. Over the past 4 seasons Feliz has averaged 21 HR's and 83 RBIs, which are respectable numbers from a 3B. Plus, playing in Citizens Bank Park should only help his numbers. So if he?s out their, make a run at him. Recommendation ? Pick up in all formats Daniel Cabrera ? Cabrera has been one of those guys who can burn you at any moment. One start he?ll strikeout 12 and the next start he?ll walk 12. His control has been a mess for years, but recently it?s looking like he?s becoming more of a pitcher than a thrower. He?s won 4 of his last 5 decisions including a win over the lethal Red Sox line...

David Simon, THE WIRE, HBO show creator: Mr. Media Audio Interview Rewind
2008-04-29 02:45:00 (Mr. Media is on vacation this week, so we're rewinding to some of the podcast's earlier, most popular interviews to catch up new listeners!)Today, it?s January 26, 2007, and I am sitting across from David Simon, creator of the critically-acclaimed and Peabody Award-winning HBO series, The Wire. We are speaking at The Inn at the Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, where Simon spent the last week working with students at Eckerd College. The fiftieth episode and fourth-season finale of The Wire aired just a few weeks ago, and the fifth season goes into production in March, so Simon is hopefully enjoying a vacation of sorts.I am an admitted late-comer to The Wire, having seen my first episode just last September in a New Jersey hotel room. I was struck by the show?s tension and extraordinarily tight script and character development, which has often been overshadowed by better-known HBO shows, such as The Sopranos and Deadwood. If you like those shows and you haven?t already caught The Wi...

In Treatment 8: A Princely Performance
2008-03-23 19:54:00 Week 8 of In Treatment on HBO was it most powerful so far. (I may have said that before - but it's true.)Although Alex's death was no real surprise - I saw it coming last week - I have to admit it brought tears to my eyes. And the funeral scenes were just what the series needed. Paul and we get to see people for the names he and Alex had been discussing ... we meet Alex's wife, children, gay friends, and, of course, Alex's father. Laura's presence was also just right, and I thought she and Paul looked more comfortable together than any time before. Paul also seemed more human and real - a therapist grappling with his own feelings about his patient's death, but, in the end, just a human being, grieving like any of us for the loss of someone he cared about. But, of course, Paul's feelings as Alex's therapist are what drives the story, and these come into full play in Tuesday's episode, when Paul gets a visit from Alex's father, played brilliantly by Glynn Turman (Mayor ...

The Wire Bows Out Gracefully; Kudos to Cast and David Simon, the Charles Di
2008-03-10 04:00:00 I sometimes, often, in fact, think The Wire is the best show ever to have been on television. It's hard to compare to The Sopranos, which was just about one person, really, Tony. The Wire was an ensemble show par excellence, with at least 15 to 20 centrally important players over the past five seasons. You can't compare it at all to Lost, which is in another - fantastic - universe, entirely. The Wire is certainly the best cop show, ever. My previously favorite was Homicide: Life on the Street. David Simon was the brains behind that Baltimore masterpiece, too. And there were lots of other connections - including Clark Johnson, Meldrick in Homicide, Gus in this last season of The Wire. But The Wire was much more than a cop show - in fact, the cops were less than half the story. There was the dock, in Season 2; politics in Season 3 and after; the school in Season 4; and the paper, the media, in this final Season 5. All of these were done superbly - though perhaps the cynical en...

Johannes returned to Iraq in 2007 to see 'The Surge' and the 'Anbar Awakening' first hand. The 2005 trip resulted in the the release of the original 'Outside the Wire: Call Sign Vengeance' which follows one Marine infantry platoon through their deployment to the Fallujah area in 2005. The 2007 trip resulted in three documentaries: 'Danger Close', 'Anbar Awakens' and 'Baghdad Surge'. 'Danger Close' is an up-close, in-depth look at a complex attack by Al Qaida on small, distant U.S. Army outpost on the edge of the Eup...

The Wire Season 5 Episode 9: Cold, Killer Sweetheart
2008-03-03 02:28:00 And now there's just one - one episode left in this fine, fine finale season of what in many many ways is the finest series ever to be on television. One of the brightest parts of our new golden age of television. This was Michael's show. He has heart, but he's also learned a lot about the way of killing. He had good instructors in the bloody craft. Chris Partlow and Snoop. You wouldn't want to run into them angry at you, or on some business concerning you, in any alley. For that matter, you wouldn't want to run into them if they were looking for you on any grand boulevard in broad daylight.I don't know who has been more deadly- yeah, I do, it would be Snoop. She had no fear, no connection to anyone or anything except her deadly job. (Chris at least has a family.)
