Why Protestant Funerals Expose Some of their Worst Theological Errors &
2008-05-02 04:15:00 In an unexpected and bizarre twist of tragedy, a co-worker of mine had her son murdered by a drive-by recently and today was the funeral which I attended. I have another friend who's an elder in an OPC ecclesial community and he often remarks to me that funerals are where you'll consistently hear the most horrific mutilations of the gospel this side of Hades. (I want to reply 'thats cause you're always going to Protestant funerals')It was a sad day for all involved but we needn't add insult to injury by spewing painfully bad doctrine from the pulpit. If it happened once, his soul was pronounced in Heaven more than a dozen times. I'm not for a second going to comment on this young man's character (I didn't know him) but even if I did, I'd assume nothing but the best and I assume he was an upright Christian on good terms with God and man. But what is sad is that through this terrible doctrinal error, this man's soul is the beneficiary not of humble and contrite praye...
When Do I Know I’m A Christian? A Biblical and Theological Inquiry;
2008-04-08 22:31:00 This is a Response to a good friend’s exploration of when it is someone becomes a Christian and acheives salvation: An inquiry in response to yesterday’s Morning Light’. I hope you can find some time to read it all. Biblically Speaking: An Inquiry: Upon repentance from sin, is this something separate of Christ? Or does repentance come upon acceptance on Jesus? Does salvation come with this repentance absent of Christ, or does salvation come from repentance in the name of Christ (namely being knowledge of Jesus, not the ‘letters’ of his name)? Are these two things that should occur at once, or are they engaged separately? I ask because upon the Pentecost, Peter gives his great sermon asking us to “repent and be baptized, every one of you, In the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” (Acts 2:38). Beforehand, John the Baptist asked people to repent and be baptized. In the Peter scenario, Peter now says that repentance in the name of Jesus will lead ...

What?s up with All the Theological Treatises?
2008-02-26 05:23:00 Lately, readers have probably noticed that I’m doing less with refuting heresy and more with Christian understandings of things like Hell and predestination. I’ve been spending more time studying historic Christianity and its creeds rather than the vitriol that drips from the mouths of the evangelistic atheist sorts. Not that I’ve waned in my vigiliance ...

The theological delusion
2007-12-18 08:43:00 Having a degree in theology is like having a degree in fairy tales - with the exception that you are taking the fairy tales very seriously, as if Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had really existed as something real at some point in time. Everything that the fairy tales say is therefore really true, albeit usually in some "symbolic" way, and must be interpreted as the holy words of a higher power, which is why weighty tomes have been written, and are still being written, to ponder the deep wisdom and inner meaning in the divinely inspired words of, for example, Cinderella. This, of course, is why you can safely discard and ignore anything a theologian says as utter rubbish. As an example of this, here's Catholic fairytaleogian John Haught "explaining" why science and God are not at odds (no, of course not), why Mike Huckabee worries him, and why Richard Dawkins and other new atheists are "ignorant" about religion (same old story: every time someone sees through the empty nonsense of...

2007-08-20 20:37:00 From the New York Times by way of Think Christian here's some interesting things we've learned from the Weekly World News:Q.: What does God look like?A.: God ?has fiery green eyes, flowing brown hair and stands 9 feet tall.?Q.: What does God sound like?A.: ?A hundred baritones and a symphony orchestra rolled into one,? as recorded by a Soviet space probe.Q.: Where is heaven?A.: Heaven is 28,000 light-years from Earth, according to another space probe.Q.: Where is hell?A.: Nine miles below the surface of Earth, according to Soviet engineers drilling in Siberia (the Soviets played a curiously large part in these discoveries). Weekly World News reassured readers that those engineers had capped the hole after smelling smoke and hearing the cries of the damned.Q.: How do you get to heaven?A.: Through the Bermuda Triangle ? did you have to ask? Theological Virtue of Love-Catholic definition
2007-08-03 21:18:00 The outstanding New Advent website has one of the most exciting resources on the internet, the Catholic Encylopedia from 1903. I dig in there from time to time; I like the old-style writing and the mild shock I sometimes get from reading something free of modern PC. I invite you to delve in with me. Let's start with the most important of the three Divine virtues as per St. Paul. Briefly, practical application of this virtue for me means wishing the best for people- friends, enemies, and those in between regardless of whether their good fortune affects me positively or not.* from All posters Love: Love (Theological Virtue) The third and greatest of the Divine virtues enumerated by St. Paul (1 Corinthians 13:13), usually called charity, defined: a divinely infused habit, inclining the human will to cherish God for his own sake above all things, and man for the sake of God. This definition sets off the main characteristics of charity: ... Read more!

Theological interpretation of scripture
2007-07-14 05:22:00 The other night, I enjoyed sharing a bottle of wine with Mike Bird, and we chatted a little about the theological interpretation of scripture (I tried ? unsuccessfully ? to defend form criticism as a valid way of interpreting scripture theologically). Anyway, Mike has now posted an excellent piece summarising the nature of theological interpretation: ?I understand theological interpretation to be the model of interpretation that focuses on the ecclesial context in which Scripture was written and on its utility for answering the theological questions confronted by its ecclesial readers, ancient and modern, when reading these texts. That means that one consciously approaches the NT not simply as a historical artefact as any other, nor as a source book for creating religious dogma, but as a document created by Christians and for Christians that speaks fundamentally a word from God and about God.? Well said!And speaking of Mike, if you want to feel very lazy and undisciplined, just take...

Must-read theological books
2007-05-24 00:44:00 Michael Jensen asks for a list of ?the must-read theological books that are coming out soon or have recently appeared.? So I thought I?d try to respond with a series of suggestions in various categories. First of all, though, if you somehow missed David Bentley Hart?s The Beauty of the Infinite (Eerdmans, 2003), then you should skip all these other books and start with that one ? it will almost certainly prove to be the most important theological work of the decade.Anyway, here are my selections of ?must-read books? under various headings (restricted to books that are forthcoming or that have appeared within the past 18 months or so). These aren?t necessarily my favourite books, but they?re the books that I think are (or will be) ?important? in the theological conversation. I?d welcome any other suggestions as well!Old TestamentRolf Rendtorff, The Canonical Hebrew Bible (Deo, 2005)New TestamentRichard Bauckham, Jesus and the Eyewitnesses (Eerdmans, 2006) ? The worst theological invention: results
2007-05-04 00:54:00 Well, after 579 votes, it?s time to announce the winner of ?the worst theological invention? poll. It was a very close contest. It was looking as though biblical inerrancy would be a clear winner ? but at the last moment, Christendom inched ahead to a first-place tie. So our joint winners are biblical inerrancy and Christendom, each with 18% of the votes. These winners are closely followed by the rapture and papal infallibility (17% each), and then Arianism (14%), double predestination (11%), and just war theory (5%). (In our egalitarian sub-poll, penal substitution was a clear winner, with 24% of 223 votes, followed by God as a male, with 21%.) So congratulations to our deserving winners: biblical inerrancy and the empire of Christendom!It was interesting to observe the geographical distribution of the votes. While biblical inerrancy and the rapture were more popular among North American voters, the Christendom vote was dominant in Europe and Asia (and, to a lesser extent, in the U...
