Black Holes Cannot Exist in Latest Theory of Quantum Gravity
2009-09-22 17:32:00 From Technology Review RSS Feeds: One of the great challenges of modern science is to unite our thinking about the universe on the largest scale with our notions of how it works on the smallest; in other words to combine relativity and quantum mechanics into a single theory. The
Stone Summer Theory Institute: 1
2009-09-20 18:03:00 Later today, School of the Art Institute of Chicago professor James Elkins will give a lecture on ?What Do Artists Know?? and launch a week of discourse concerning the imminent (some say over-due) arrival of ?studio-based? doctorates in the United States. Prof. Elkins? talk is first on the agenda for the 2009 Stone Summer Theory Institute conference; seven days of seminars, lectures and round-tables, featuring Sir Christopher Frayling, expert on PhD research and author of a frequently cited essay on ?research into, through and for art and design,? and Roy Sorensen, professor of philosophy at Washington University.(1)I am here because I occasionally reference Prof. Elkins? scholarship in my essays and admire his critical writing. I discovered SSTI last year; the 2008 conference topic was ?What is an Image?? and featured a diverse selection of seminars and readings. When I learned that this year?s conference topic was going to be ?What Do Artists Know?? I decided that I must attend...

Exclusive Interview: THE BIG BANG THEORY Star Jim Parsons on his Emmy Chanc
2009-09-18 21:54:00 “Flabbergasted,” is how Jim Parsons summed up his reaction to his 2009 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. Our theory: Parsons clearly has yet to actually watch THE BIG BANG THEORY. How else to explain his “God No!” response when this TV Addict casually suggested he might wish to consider jotting down a few thank-you’s. “It’s hard to accept that I’m actually going to go to the Emmys, let alone nominated,” explained Parsons in a recent one-on-one with the TV Addict. “It’s something I’ve watched on TV for so long and now to be attending… I know that I have to wear a tux and that’s really about as far as my brain has gone!” Something else the actor has trouble wrapping his head around is what can fans expect when everybody’s favorite theoretical physicist returns this Monday September 21 at 9:30PM on CBS (’A’ Channel in Canada) “They don’t tell me...

First Look: Lewis Black on THE BIG BANG THEORY
2009-09-16 20:48:00 On the September 28 episode of THE BIG BANG THEORY titled “The Jiminy Conjecture” it’s up to special guest star Entymologist Lewis Black to resolve a wager over the species of a cricket that has Sheldon and Wolowitz staking their most valuable comic books on the answer. Also at stake, Leonard and Penny’s relationship, as the twosome ‘brilliantly’ attempt to recover from an awkward first hookup with alcohol. More photos of which can be found after the jump.

David used the toilet just previously and waits for her. “Sorry,” he says, “I don’t flush the toilet every time I go.”“Oh, is that a water conservation thing, reducing the number of times the toilet flushes and saving gallons and gallons of water every time?”“No, it’s sentimental.”©2009 P.L. First Look: THE BIG BANG THEORY Returns From the Arctic
2009-08-27 04:31:00 One doesn’t need to have a Sheldon-sized intellect to piece together that the gang’s three month arctic expedition didn’t exactly go as planned over the summer. How else to explain some of these seriously spoileriffic photos from THE BIG BANG THEORY season premiere titled “The Electric Can Opener Fluctuation” that has one member of our fearsome foursome really happy to be home, and another fleeing to Mommy (Also known as special guest star Laurie Metcalf!) in disgrace? But hey, don’t take our word for it, judge for yourself by checking out the photos after the jump.

Will our future innocence or guilt be based on mathematical formulas?
Vacuum Theory
2009-08-20 22:30:00 I have put a very basic sketch here of our plants use of vacuum. The process we use is for foam molding. We use a steam autoclave to create the molding process desired. We then need to remove heat and water saturated air from the autoclave chest. We achieve this by using Liquid ring vacuum pumps (wi
Dow Theory eyes Aflac (AFL)

Here's his latest from the blue-chip Dow Theory Forecasts."Aflac is a low-cost provider of supplemental life and health insurance in Japan and the U.S. The firm' investment portfolio, vulnerable to the fate of European banks, has kept the company in hot water."Its total investments and cash totaled $65.6 billion at the end of June, up 6% from the end of March. Since February, investors have feared investment losses could swamp the stock. The primary culprit is European hybrid securities issued by banks at risk of nationalization. "So- far, those fears appear exaggerated — values of European securities have begun to recover. Unrealized losses on investments available for sale are $4.9 billion, roughly 7% of the total portfolio and down from $5.9 billion in March. "The company realized $249 million in investme...

Countdown to Fall: THE BIG BANG THEORY
2009-08-13 16:16:00 Think different is so 2005. Which is why our vote for the new season of THE BIG BANG THEORY is think bigger. Not only did CBS show big confidence in the little-series-that-could by renewing it for two seasons, expect big guest stars courtesy of THE DAILY SHOW’s Lewis Black (Who drops by the show’s second episode playing a Professor whose life is in shambles), and big romance when Leonard and Penny finally go where we have a feeling Sheldon has yet to go before (Teased executive producer Bill Prady to EW’s Michael Ausiello, “When they finally make it all the way, they have trouble finding their groove.”) Thankfully, one thing that won’t be getting bigger are the cast’s egos. With star Johnny Galecki remaining refreshingly humble when this TV Addict had the opportunity to interview him at CBS’s recent TCA party (”I can’t imagine the ego trip that you would have to accept to actually become accustom to 4500 screaming fans at C...

String theory in everyday life?
2009-07-15 03:08:00 Not long after reading PW's post about the loss of shop classes in school, I ran across a student asking a question about strings. It occured to me that the reason the student didn't know the answer is part of the result of PW's lament. So, here's the question - a sort of challenge I suppose. S

Funware, A New Game Theory For Marketers
2009-06-07 17:09:00 The generation of the new online game players has motivated consumer brands, websites and charities to use gaming devices to attract attention to their products and services. "Funware" is the application of game-like qualities to non-games. Researchers say that when we play online games, we enter a "flow state" that makes us receptive to the images and information we encounter. While traditional commercials interrupt that state, funware allows for these messages to seep through.
Channel Surfing: LAW & ORDER, I’M A CELEBRITY, THE BIG BANG THEORY &a
2009-06-03 12:56:00 C.T. offers up some random musings from around the dial…  Kudos to you, LAW & ORDER: SVU! About two minutes into the season finale, I was all set to write a piece on how Dick Wolf had made a rare misstep with annoying tech Dale Stuckey, who first appeared earlier this season. I even wanted to suggest that this fall’s season finale revolve around the geek’s murder. And then the show went and pulled the rug right out from under me by turning the guy into a psycho killer. And it was a blast (and a little hawt) to watch Olivia manhandle her sexy partner. As Elliot said But man, did the continuity department do a crappy job where the blood stains on Stabler’s shirt were concerned!  I‘M A CELEBRITY’s Stephen Baldwin and the Pratt brats are giving religion the worst rap it’s had since the days of the inquisition. Testing a theory…
2009-06-03 00:22:00 We were talking to David Meerman Scott — author of World Wide Rave — on our radio show this morning and he has an unusual perspective on distributing content online. When offering an ebook or a white paper, most marketers would tell you to offer your content in exchange for an email address or other personal information. The rationale is, of course, that a business owner should be able to A) determine who is downloading their valuable content and B) have the ability to follow up with that individual afterward. Scott didn’t think so. In his experience, he claimed that allowing site visitors to download the paper without providing any personal information would increase the interest and readership of the content several times over. So what’s more valuable? The information you get from the people who download your content online or the much larger readership that you may be missing out on because you are asking for information? We’ve decided to make ourselves guin...

The Rise of Critical Animal Studies: Putting Theory into Action and Animal
2009-05-30 20:30:00 By Steven Best[2]5/27/09Simulposted with ICAS?The capacity to contain and manipulate subversive imagination is an integral part of the given society.? Herbert MarcuseIn the last three decades, animal studies has experienced an exponential growth rate in the academy. The ?animal turn? in academic research has moved throughout humanities, the fine arts, and social sciences; it has crossed into fields such as psychology, philosophy, anthropology, political science, sociology; and it has made its mark in literature, history, cultural and critical studies and the arts, geography, philosophy, feminism, and queer theory. Currently, there are at least 40 courses being offered in departments that span these disciplines in universities and colleges in North America, the UK and New Zealand. The turn is manifest in an explosion of articles, books, conferences, and academic programs opening up from Canada to New Zealand.Without question, these trends will continue and animal studies will evolve ...

The breach was apparently in an area connected to the Internet and databases segregated from the Web were not affected.

2009-04-28 20:10:00 Arlen Specter (D-PA) is just the latest symbol of a party on the verge of total collapse. It is amazing, and kind of heart-warming, to watch the GOP surgically remove it's nose to spite its face. How blind are they to reality? Seriously folks, when the party decides to abandon a "Reagan Big-Tent" Republican with such power in the Senate in favor of the likes of Toomey; what are they thinking? The Rush-Rove power train is off the rails! The Republican party is relegating itself to a small southern regionalized party without power or a reality based plan for the future. To say "how the mighty have fallen" would be a gross understatement of the current affairs of this recent political powerhouse. They have hooked themselves so heartily on the teet of whack-job conservatism that they are causing members to bail ship?! Specter sees the ship sinking. He knows that they aren't throwing him a life preserve, but instead and pushing his head under the water because he voted against the...
Solar Powered Orangutan Can Climb Miles of Rope - In Theory...
2009-04-27 15:55:00 Solar Power is becoming quite a popular topic to explore with toys--probably due to the expense of actually providing a full-sized working model of an item would break the bank. So now we have tiny solar powered cars, solar powered toy airplanes, and now... the solar powered orangutan. And while I would love to see mass-produced, fully functional, full-sized working versions of the car and the airplane, I think that this thing would be quite disconcerting due to it's tank-like design...

Paley Festival Recap ‘09: THE BIG BANG THEORY
2009-04-17 19:23:00 Direct from the Paley Fest ‘09 in Hollywood comes the TV Addict’s report from the hilarious and heartwarming panel featuring the cast (Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar) and creators (Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady) of hit CBS show THE BIG BANG THEORY. What’s in a name: Producer, co-creator Chuck Lorre revealed that the character names of Sheldon and Leonard were a “goofy homage… just a little fan thing of our own… a tip of the hat,” to pioneering film and television producer, actor and writer Sheldon Leonard. It all started with: Sheldon, Leonard and a very hard partying dangerous girl who moved next door. [The original [working] title for THE BIG BANG THEORY was “Lenny, Penny and Kenny”] “We learned very quickly that the audience hated this girl [who would eventually evolve into Penny] because they were protective of these two guys. They were innocent with big open hearts and you simpl...

Elliott wave's theory on bonds
2009-04-15 15:00:00 "Treasury bonds are building a historic top," says Robert Prechter, technical expert and pioneer in Elliott Wave analysis. In his The Elliott Wave Forecast he offers his outlook on bonds."T-bond prices have been going up for 28 years, since 1981, when the rate of inflation peaked."People were afrid of T-bonds in 1981, and today is is perhaps the world's most popular investment (formerly it was real estate). This shift in desire is entirely normal and consistent with a maturing bull market."We have seen recent manic buying in the Treasury bond market on what appears to be news of a sure thing: the Fed is going to buy T-bonds."Market sentiment is consistent with a peaking process, and it is difficult to imagine more 'comforting' news than the supposedly all-powerful Fed buying an investment."Indeed, we recently saw the biggest one-day drop in 21 years in terms of percentage change in yield. Larger one-day moves occured the day of th...

Look into my eyes: CCW and the kinetic theory of gases
2009-02-19 10:31:00 In my preceding post, I posed the question: has anything really changed since last year's difficulties in the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW)'s efforts to negotiate a protocol on cluster munitions in the wake of agreement by 107 states in Dublin in May on a Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) that comprehensively prohibits the weapon? As the CCW Group of Governmental Experts meeting this week approaches its end, the answer looks like 'No'. As foreshadowed, the incoming GGE Chair, Argentina, has focused his efforts on informal consultations at the bilateral and small group level, and there have been few meetings in Plenary, except for an hour on Monday morning and a few minutes yesterday. In each case Argentina distributed "elements for discussion papers". Monday's paper contained textual options on general "prohibitions and restrictions" for a putative agreement, "storage / and destruction" and "transfers". On Wednesday morning the Chair's second discussi...

Cochise?s theory of evolution
2009-02-12 17:03:00 Charles Darwin was born on 12 February 1809, 200 years ago today. I think that the man was wrong and I can prove it! (see picture above).

The Intergalactic PMO Chaos Theory
2008-12-28 11:32:00 The APM Programme Management Specific Interest Group recently published the following article I wrote: I’ve observed the efforts of a number of organisations to build a PMO. In some cases, the term PMO is used with the letter ‘P’ interchangeably representing the words programme and project because no one seems to know whether they are building a programme or project office, or a combination of both. That often derives from the confusion within the organisation over what exactly constitutes a project and a programme. There are plenty of people still naively referring to projects as programmes, and vice versa; but I digress. Are you nodding already? If you’re sitting there nodding your head, I’m pleased that you know what I mean and you’ve probably seen the organised chaos that so much time, effort and money can often achieve in the hands of the right people. Don’t laugh …just continue to nod. Then there’s the need to introduce a project or programme office quic...

Pleasure-Pain Theory
2008-12-21 22:58:00 A couple of years ago there was an advertising campaign here in the UK in which people appeared to enjoy near-orgasmic experiences whilst consuming a yoghurt related product. Each time an attractive lady tucked into a tasty, creamy carton of healthy goodness some poor sod on the other side of the world would suffer a seriously painful accident such as falling off a ladder or walking into a glass door.Oh how I laughed at this humorous take on the "pleasure-pain theory".Mind you, it's not so funny when it happens for real. Especially when the good and the bad stuff happen to the same person, namely, yours truly, Mr T. Pepper. This week I successfully completed two major work projects and received a large pay rise along with a promotion. On the other hand I got dumped.I don't know whether to laugh or cry.T |
