2nd Law of Thermodynamics
2008-04-30 13:06:00 hello everyone, i need an exact explanation about this thing we are studying the 2nd law of thermodynamics and we were talking about the powerplant heat engine which consists of a boiler, turbine, condenser, and a pump.so one of the students came up with the following question:"why do we ha
BIOLOGICAL THERMODYNAMICS (2008)
2008-04-18 13:18:00 Publisher: Cambridge University Press | Language: English | ISBN:0521711347 | 438 pages | Data: 2008 | PDF | 3.62 MBDescription: This inter-disciplinary guide to the thermodynamics of living organisms has been thoroughly revised and updated to provide a uniquely integrated overview of the subject. Retaining its highly readable style, it will serve as an introduction to the study of energy transformation in the life sciences and particularly as an accessible means for biology, biochemistry and bioengineering undergraduate students to acquaint themselves with the physical dimension of their subject. The emphasis throughout the text is on understanding basic concepts and developing problem-solving skills. The mathematical difficulty increases gradually by chapter, but no calculus is required. Topics covered include energy and its transformation, the First Law of Thermodynamics, Gibbs free energy, statistical thermodynamics, binding equilibria and reaction ...
Value, Money and The First Law of Thermodynamics by Evan Palmer
2008-04-13 01:31:00 "Energy cannot be created or destroyed."Money, a form of economic energy, is a marker for value. Nothing more. And there are many other markers - for example, stocks & bonds. If a value marker is more than one step removed from the object of value (where "object" has the broadest possible definition) then it should be considered speculative. Speculative objects should not have any standing versus a marker. They should not be permitted to affect markers. Making a currency convertible to gold or silver was a way of guaranteeing this for money. One level of abstraction with regards to value markers is more than enough. It is difficult enough to manage that single layer of markers. Going beyond that is the realm of cheats and thieves and those who allow cheats and thieves to prosper are their accomplices. Those who deal with them - beware.Value is a complex entity and putting a currency value on it is fraught with risk but it's safe to say that for every individual loss of value of ...
Applications of Thermodynamics
2008-02-14 07:58:00 Thermodynamics is generally a tricky subject, so maybe an real world application of the material may help. (These are also the types of questions the MCAT might ask). How do refrigerators work? This can be answered using the concepts of thermodynamics. The first law of thermodynamics states that the change in internal energy of ...

Another Round on Thermodynamics [EvolutionBlog]
2007-12-03 04:36:00 Every once in a while the ID folks get into their heads to set-up an actual academic journal. You know, a place where they can lay out all that cutting-edge research kept out of the real journals by dogmatic Darwinian stormtroopers. These journals invariably founder on their inability to find any scientists willing to write for them. Remember Proceedings in Complexity, Information and Design? It’s been moribund since November 2005. Or how about Origins and Design? That one went belly-up around the turn of the century. The latest representative of the genre is Anti-Matters. It bills itself as “A quarterly open-access journal addressing issues in science and the humanities from non-materialistic perspectives.” Somehow I’m not optimistic that this journal will make any splash among scientists. You see, the current issue features an article which — are you sitting down? — revives the second law of thermodynamics argument against evolution. ...

Economics and thermodynamics
2007-10-16 07:27:00 Doing a perfunctory search on google about Economics and Thermodynamics I found a bunch of articles about the second and third laws of thermodynamics as they apply to economics. Don’t worry, I will not talk about chaos or entropy, I will talk about the first law of thermodynamics: “The increase in the internal energy of ...

Thermodynamics in Track and Field and Other Geeky Stuff
2007-07-14 20:03:00 I like to explore the depths of track and field websites. Geeky, huh? The IAAF website, for instance, has some 62,200 pages (62,400 pages, just 4 hours later) over which I can obsess. While exploring the web pages of our sport's international governing body, I ran across a section titled New Studies in Athletics that I had previously overlooked for some reason. While exploring it I found some easily-digestible summaries of some fascinating track and field research studies. These summaries are so short that even the complex scientific information they contain can be absorbed within a minute or two. Here's one that is so short, I'll just quote it in its entirety:The effects of warm-up and pre-cooling on endurance performance in high ambient temperaturesWednesday 18 April 2007By Sandra Ückert and Winfried JochIt is well established that warm conditions have a detrimental effect on endurance performance. If skin temperature is exceeded by the ambient temperature, heat dissipation is...
Infinite-energy proof challenges materialist thermodynamics dogma
2007-07-11 06:01:00 Ask a materialist if an infinitely powerful entity is possible, and they will reply with a “No!”, without even bothering to consider your question for a moment. The materialist’s understanding of the laws of thermodynamics exclude any knowledge of systems that have infinite energy. Unfortunately for materialists, their understanding of these basic scientific principles ...
food thermodynamics: place your bets
2007-07-09 01:23:00 QuestionHow long will it take to thaw a 40 pound turkey in a small refrigerator that is set to 36-38F? Additional data points It is one of those dorm/hotel room sized refrigerators and the turkey occupies ~80% of it. We took out all the shelving and there is a little freezer section. It is in my garage, which is warm, probably upper 70s, in the daytime and cools down to ~mid-60s at night. It's been about 36 hours so far and I can press down on the breast maybe 1/2 inch before hitting stuff that is solidly frozen. Maybe. (Did I mention this sucker is HUGE?) There's bragging rights, if not much else, at stake here. I'll post a guess later - I think we've got a few days to contemplate this question before it gets much closer to thawed. Then I have to figure out what to do with it...
