Thermoelectric generators

Germany automakers Volkswagen and BMW have developed thermoelectric generators (TEG) that recover waste heat from a combustion engine. According to a report by Prof. Rowe of the University of Wales in the International Thermoelectric Society, Volkswagen claims 600W output from the TEG under hig

How to assemble thermoeletrics "Peltier Cells" in the range of 400W to 500W (12V - 40A each one), very common in cooled devices, in order to make local power supply from hot mineral oil flow heated by solar parabolic(s) device(s)? Can we adapt Peltier cells to work from solar thermal energy?

Wanted: Small, Low Output, Thermoelectric Generator

Many years ago, in Design for the Real World, there was a radio designed for 3rd world areas which consisted of a small radio circuit mounted on a tin can which had thermocouples mounted to provide power by burning materials in the can. I am looking for a way to generate 3-5 volts at 20ma (to
Thermoelectric Generators Improve Vehicle Fuel Efficiency
2008-08-11 20:05:00
Internal combustion engines, like the one in your car, generate power by burning a fuel source (usually gasoline) and converting that heat into mechanical energy, usually by heating a gas or liquid and causing it to expand, using the pressure to move the pistons outward. But it turns out that the process is fairly energy-inefficient, resulting in most of the heat (about 70 percent) being lost to the atmosphere (that's why the hood of your car gets hot and the exhaust gas that comes out your tailpipe is, likewise, hot). But what if we could capture some of that waste heat and use it for energy? That would make cars more energy efficient. It turns out that heat can be converted directly into electricity using devices called thermoelectric generators. The U.S. Department of Energy recently challenged researchers to use the wasted heat energy to make automobiles 10 percent more fuel efficient, and the researchers are coming through. It turns out that if you wrap the exhaust pipe ...
Thermoelectric Wine Fridge Buying Guide Introduction to Collecting
2008-04-12 00:00:00
The most effective way of protecting your collection is to store your bottles in wine cellars or wine storage refrigerators. Wines that are stored at a perfectly even temperature are richer in taste, aroma and flavor. This buying guide will be useful in selecting the storage most suitable for your collection.

Body powered circuits developed by Fraunhofer Institute
2007-08-17 16:06:00
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets, Wireless Our favorite German researchers over at the Fraunhofer Institute have developed "entire electronic systems" capable of operating battery-free from body heat alone. The picture above shows a wireless transmitter powered by the human hand. The 200 millivolts required to drive the device is supplied by a thermoelectric generator (TEG) which extracts electrical energy from hot and a cold temperature differentials of just a few degrees Celsius. Of course, the application processor alone in modern handhelds requires about 1W to operate so 2mW is a long way off from powering our portable electronics. Still, progress is progress. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!
