On January 31st, 2011 I posted a blog entitled “10 things my White friends aren’t allowed to do during Black History Month.” A lot of people loved it, and other people sent me hate mail afterward. Nevertheless, it sparked a discussion about Black History Month… so I’m at it again. Black History Month is a... Read more »

2012-01-31 19:01:00
Whether you’ve been a fan of actress Vanessa Lengies from her days starting out on AMERICAN DREAMS or discovered her more recently courtesy of her latest role that sees her stepping into the shoes of GLEE’s Sugar Motta, odds are fairly good that “Today’s TV Addict Top 5″ that has us revealing a handful of things you don’t know about the actress will be news to you (Particularly Point #4!). See for yourself, after the jump. She’s Canadian! Having found her way onto Hollywood’s radar playing a quintessential american teenager in the much-beloved-but-short-lived NBC series AMERICAN DREAMS, it may surprise many to learn that actress Vanessa Lengies is… wait for it… part of the not-so-secret cabal of Canadians doing a fairly good job of making their Hollywood dreams come true in Los Angeles. “Us Canadians stick together out here! Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Highly Improbable Things We’d Like to See Happ
2012-01-27 01:07:00
Seeing as though Isis, the Earl of Grantham’s four-legged friend holds the dubious distinction of being perhaps the most prominently featured derrière in the history of opening credits, we firmly believe that it’s high time the writers of the hit UK export pen an upcoming third season episode from the perspective of the eyes, ears, and tail of DOWNTON ABBEY’s most adorable resident. If Tim Allen and Co. are really serious about improving ratings for his fledgling freshman sitcom, we’ve got two words for him: Sweeps Stunt! Translation, it’s time for LAST MAN STANDING to take the most obvious tool out of it belt. That being: A bizarro episode in which Allen’s character Mike Baxter awakens in a universe in which his lovely daughters are replaced by three familiar sons played by none other than… you guessed it… Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Taran Noah Smith. Home Improvement, indeed. Before HART OF DIXIE’s Bluebell Alabama c...
Talking things through in your head may help autism
2012-01-25 19:54:00
Teaching children with autism to ?talk things through? in their heads may help them solve tricky day-to-day tasks and could increase the chances of them living independent lives when they grow up, British scientists said on Wednesday. Psychologists who studied adults with autism found that the mechanism for using ?inner speech,? or talking things through in your head is intact, but they don?t always use it in the same way as typically developing people do. The researchers found that the tendency to ?think in words? is also strongly linked to the extent of a person?s communication skills, which are rooted in early childhood.

Shanghai Rego International School. One-Off Or Sign Of Things To Come?
2012-01-19 16:28:00
At least once a month, I get an email from an English teacher in China wanting to start a language consulting business or school in China. I have a form response that summarizes what it will likely take and likely cost for them to do so legally. Virtually none of them had any idea of the difficulties and costs in starting such businesses. My law firm represents a good number of existing international schools in China and we are right now working on at least double the number of legal issues as usual for them. Today I saw a Shanghaiist post on "issues" being faced by Shanghai Rego International School. The post entitled, "Shanghai Rego International School now facing forced relocation," details how the school is being forced to move as its facility is being taken over for a public school: However an official surnamed Hua with the district's Education Bureau said there were no safety issues but said the school probably will have to relocate because the bureau has decided not to le...

I?m Expecting Big Things from This Portfolio Holding
2012-01-18 19:00:00
The stock market is surely unpredictable. My prediction that LED lighting manufacturer Cree Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), one of the stocks in my $100,000 real-money portfolio, would meet or exceed fiscal second-quarter estimates, turned out to be off the mark. The company trailed both top and bottom line forecasts, and issued fairly tepid third-quarter guidance to boot. Still, shares are up more than 4% in today's trading as investors are (correctly) focusing on the bright long-term view. An update on my $100,000 Real-Money Portfolio holdings… Now that two of my $100,000 real-money portfolio holdings, Alcoa (NYSE: AA) and Cree, have both reported, I look forward to hear what Zoltek (Nasdaq: ZOLT) has to say when the company releases fourth-quarter results . . . → Read More: I’m Expecting Big Things from This Portfolio Holding

4 Critical Things You Need to Watch as Earnings Season Begins
2012-01-06 19:00:00
We're entering one of the most important phases of the year for investors. In the weeks ahead, many companies will set the tone for the remainder of 2012, laying out strategic goals along with sales and profit targets. For many companies, it will be the only time of the year they'll provide deep, forward-looking insights.. And though we all seem to be busier than ever, investors should carve out time to listen to conference calls of the companies on their watch list. There is simply no way to really understand a business — and its prospects — by only reading quarterly press releases. Here are four key trends that may dominate the upcoming conference call . . . → Read More: 4 Critical Things You Need to Watch as Earnings Season Begins

Preparing for a Major Test: Things to Consider, PART 3
2012-01-05 08:40:00
Standardized tests are going to be a part of almost everyone’s life. For school, college, graduate school, professional licensure, and employment applications, the little round boxes and the number two pencils or the online equivalent, are all around us.   These tests have to be designed to elicit from as wide a variety of people as possible a correct response. They also have to be designed to distinguish folks who are just guessing wildly from those who are following a logical train of thought. It makes sense to take advantage of any possible aids to thinking when facing these tests.   In past articles we discussed professional, paid test prep services and the injunction by pros to read the questions ahead of time, as well as the need to just plain read. We will start with this and move on to some other strategies for coping with these tests.   Reading the questions ahead of starting to read any text or do any calculation or picking an answer from among several v...
December, 2012: Things That Make You Go Hmmm
2012-01-04 17:30:00
For whatever deeply embedded psychological reason – and your humble analyst is profoundly guilty – we humans seem prone to picking out a particular point in our space-time continuum (read: the New Year) to think about the future and new beginnings, rather than running the exercise every week or month. Maybe so much introspection and thinking is just too exhausting, so we only do it on an annual basis. I am deep in my reading as I research my annual forecast issue, which I will write Friday. I am thinking of being especially foolish (and anyone who makes predictions is foolish) and going out to a five-year time frame. It should be challenging. But back to today. One of . . . → Read More: December, 2012: Things That Make You Go Hmmm
Europeans in the US: Seeing things from their point of view
2012-01-03 19:19:00
By Bryan Pirolli— We always experience culture differences as foreigners in Paris, and I’ve written about it before. (See my previous post “Are Parisians Rude?”) But what about the other side of the coin? How do Parisians react when visiting the States? During a holiday luncheon with some Parisian friends while in New York, we Americans were allowed a rare glimpse into what the French find striking about our own culture, from tipping to the color of our money. Money, money, money My French friends first discussed the differences in money issues. Why are American bills all the same color? How much do you tip a cab driver? Why are telecommunications so expensive? They marveled at the things that we take for granted (after all, the euros do feel like Monopoly money to us sometimes). At the end of the meal, willing but frustrated with trying to calculate the absolutely un-Parisian gratuity, they just said, “Tell us what we owe,” and the bill was settled by the Am...

Preparing for a Major Test: Things to Consider, PART 2
2012-01-03 13:11:00
Standardized tests are a current fixture of admissions to educational institutions and for professional licensure. Given this, students and their families need to avoid being blind-sided.   There are resources and techniques to make the experience less horrific, but of course, nothing replaces personal familiarity with both the content of the test and the context as well. Let’s look at these tests and how to manage the experience.   Standardized testing is meant to provide schools with an evaluation tool that evens out the vast heterogeneity in students’ educational backgrounds, and serve as a reliable alternative to grades and recommendations. The big standard tests such as the SATs and the GREs purport to examine the individual’s ability alone.   Intense controversy roils around these tests because of consistently lower scores for persons from some demographic groups than for others. They have been accused of being racially, ethnically, economically, and lin...

Preparing for a Major Test: Things to Consider
2011-12-29 13:53:00
When you face a major standardized test, the sort of test that could determine whether you get in to a good high school, college, or graduate school, or obtain professional certification, you need all the help you can get.   Of course, you are going to have to invest personal effort and energy, but assistance exists to help make sure that your time is well spent. Some resources are free, but some of them cost money. Most can be accessed online, but not all.   The grand-daddy of all test prep resources is the ubiquitous and huge Stanley Kaplan organization; now both a bricks and mortar as well as online operation.   Kaplan addresses admissions tests for high school, college, and graduate school, as well as professional licensure preparation in medicine, nursing, allied medical, law, the TOEFL, and real estate IT certification.   Interestingly, their teachers do not necessarily have specific teaching experience. However, they require exceptionally high test score...

Between the guitar and amp lie assorted Suhr and Boss pedals. If you are a fan of instrumental rock, this album is required buying and you won't be disappointed. 5 Things I Learned About Investing in 2011
2011-12-12 19:00:00
There is intelligence and then there is wisdom. We are all born with intelligence, but we pick up wisdom along the way. I'm no more intelligent than when I got into this business 20 years ago, but hopefully, much wiser. The key evolution: I now develop far fewer mistaken assumptions about the stocks and industries I analyze. With this in mind, here are five things I learned in 2011 that will (presumably) make me wiser — and richer — in the years to come… 1. Industry selection is far more important than stock selection I spent too much time this year focusing on the best play in a particular industry. For example, I suggested Delta (NYSE: DAL) . . . → Read More: 5 Things I Learned About Investing in 2011
