Full story here. I love thought-provoking commentary. I will put in my 2 cents about the concept “Third World”. You may think, no plumbing and unsanitary. Well, that’s one aspect. More generically, imagine your nice house and plumbing, but a busted public works system, bankrupted or hyperinflated out of existence. You can have all the pipe in the ...

Third world war begins - part 1
2008-04-26 08:17:00
Damm, I did not notice it, finally I got it, whats going on... War I mean, economic war. No blood, no weapons, but there is a war going on, I have seen it. Where is the war happening? On The web. How long the war will be? may be around 15 to 20 years. What is the result of the war? A Flat world. Which countries are winners (or more benefitial countries) and lead the world for next 50+ years? USA, China and India. (I only lived in India and US, both coutires have very similar people, law.. I do not see much difference, I don’t know about china). Who are the loosers? I don't know. How did I find this? I read 150+ feeds in week days, 600+ feeds on week ends. Two months ago I also started trading, I also studied couple of statistic reports. All these gave me a good picture about whats going on. You can see this war by business category, for example Oil vs Gold vs IT vs Platinum etc. This is going to be very interesting, because the war is actually going to innovate many th...
Los Angeles Becoming A Third World Country
2008-04-23 22:39:00
Los Angeles is becoming a "Third World city" with immigrants making up half its workforce, says a new study.A third of immigrants have not graduated from high school and 60 per cent do not speak English fluently, the Migration Policy Institute found. It said this left immigrants ill-equipped to fill California's fastest-growing occupations, such as computer software engineering and nursing. The organisation added that as the so-called baby boomers reach retirement age, a similar pattern will spread across the US.Ernesto Cortes Jr, of the Industrial Areas Foundation, a think-tank that specialises on social change, claimed Los Angeles was at a crossroads."The question is are we going to be a 21st century city with shared prosperity, or a Third World city with an elite group on top and most on near poverty wages?" he said.SOURCEDidnt a representative from Colorado say the same thing recently? But yet he was painted as a racist. Video below:

Steve Jobs - Screw College and Third World Debt... Get Rich Bitch
2008-04-02 04:34:00
This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories. The first story is about connecting the dots.I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided a...

Rumble: Aquaduct, the Solution to Third World Clean Water?
2008-03-19 23:23:00
The Aquaduct was the brainchild of five California-based design students who wanted to address the problem of 1.1 billion people in the world who don't have access to clean drinking water. The pedal-powered machine transports and filters water without burning fossil fuels or wood, both of which contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions. The winner and five runners-up, you can find on innovate-or-die.Looking at the video, it makes me think... Hmmmm... A typical First World solution to a Third World problem.. Or am I too cynical?Let me explain:- I always thought that polluted water needed filtering AND cooking (or treatment by chemicals) to make it safe.- The filters will need to be replaced, which costs money. A supply chain would need to be set up, which costs money. Is this affordable?- Where clean water is needed most, people survive on less than a dollar per day. Could they at all afford this tricycle?Source: The Other World News

Hans Rosling: Debunking third-world myths with the best stats you've ever s
2008-03-08 23:40:00
You've never seen data presented like this. With the drama and urgency of a sportscaster, Hans Rosling debunks myths about the so-called "developing world" using extraordinary animation software developed by his Gapminder Foundation. The Trendalyzer software (recently acquired by Google) turns complex global trends into lively animations, making decades of data pop. Asian countries, as colorful bubbles, float across the grid -- toward better national health and wealth. Animated bell curves representing national income distribution squish and flatten. In Rosling's hands, global trends -- life expectancy, child mortality, poverty rates -- become clear, intuitive and even playful. - TEDVideo: ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id-/92

Lions kill to eat, but they eat only the liked parts of body of the animal they hunted and leave the area and remaining body. Then comes the turn of hyaenas to eat the remainders of the animals and when they leave the scene then comes the turn of the vultures. Vultures clean up the body by collecting remaining flesh on the bones. They fly away in search of the next food leaving the skeleton behind. Some times hyaenas threatens the lions if get strength in numbers so lions have to leave that area. Also sometimes vultures try to take their turn while the hyaenas are eating the flesh of the dead animal a war starts between the two vultures have to get away waiting for their turn. Same is the situation in under-developed countries. The ruling parties come and occupy the resources of the country when they are coming by spending millions (in currency of that country) how can they be pious enough to satisfy the nation being transparent in dealing different projects of national interests or...

Angelina Jolie adoptions of children from Third World countries
2007-12-08 13:04:00
HER credentials as a caring superstar could hardly be bettered. Angelina Jolie, mother of four, is as famous for her well-publicised adoptions of children from Third World countries as she is for her Oscar-winning movies and relationship with Brad Pitt.As a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees for the past six years, the beautiful 32-year-old actress has travelled frequently to impoverished African states, often to the heart of a conflict, to highlight the plight of the world's most desperate people. In October, she visited Western Sudan to bring to the world's attention the appalling conditions endured by an estimated 2.5 million people who have fled brutal ethnic fighting in the war-torn province of West Darfur. The visit took the film star within an hour's flight of neighbouring Ethiopia, the birthplace of her daughter Zahara, whom she adopted amid much publicity in July 2005 in what seemed to be a flamboyant act of charity.Indeed, even the most c...

XO - Learning in the Third World
2007-11-21 20:49:00
Yesterday I blogged about the new Kindle but I am much more excited about the XO. This laptop project has been in development for years and is aimed at empowering children in the third world to learn by providing them with access to low cost computers that are child friendly. With that in mind the laptop has been designed to be rugged, easy to use, to view, has great power efficiency and it uses free open source software thats helps keep the costs low. The aim of the project is to provide an XO to as many kids around the world as possible to make it easier for them to learn. Right now if you give a donation of a laptop another will be shipped to you. Its a great cause (the donation can be written off) but the promotion is only on until 26th November and the response has been overwhelming so get cracking.
Blog Series: Part 2 Third World Pc's the Desert PC
2007-11-16 20:43:00
This is Part 2 of my mini-blog series Third World Pc's. In Part 1 I talked a little bit about the recent mass market release of both the Asus Eee Pc and the One Laptop Per Child organization's the XO-1. And before I continue on with that I thought I would look and see are these the only computers in the works for developing third world countries out there that having an impact? What I found right away was an organization called Geekcorp's. Last year they worked on a project computer called the Desert PC. Now while this is not a laptop like the previous two machines they are non-the-less having quite an impact on a town called Bourem Inaly in Mali. If you click on the Google Map link for the village you will see that it is located literally in the middle of no-where in Africa. The Desert PC is a sealed, fanless system based on VIA Technologies’ Mini-ITX form factor. It has a heatpipe for passive cooling, a solid state disk to el...
Blog Series: Third World Pc's Part 1 Asus Eee PC vs. OLPC XO-1
2007-11-14 01:54:00
Have you seen the latest in affordable computing? Currently there are two flavors of affordable ultra-portable laptops. One is the Asus Eee Pc and the other is the result of the One Laptop Per Child organization the XO-1. I had started to blog something about this earlier this summer prior to the open market release of both of these machines but have only now had a chance to do so. I am really intrigued by not just the thought of being able to finally offer an affordable laptop for children or adults in developing countries, but also the impact they will have on the rest of the already computerized world. With a glut of fully functional machines such as these eventually available for in most instances less than what most folks earn in a day at work they will be literally everywhere. I would like to spend the next week doing a blog series touching on both these machines. How they have faired since they have gone public so to speak and where they are being used. Sorry I hope to...
US National Debt and Third World Debt

Power-yoyo could power Third World mobiles.
2007-10-15 17:38:00
As we could learn from the example of Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank, a micro credit can allow a poor villager in a Third World country to buy for example a mobile phone and start making money from setting up a telephone service for his neighbors. One of the problems with the phone proliferation in the Third World, though, is access to power to charge the ever hungry phones. There are some crank-powered or solar chargers, and here comes a new take. The power-yoyo from Potenco. The device is the same that is fitted in the OLPC "100 dollar laptop" (now USD 180:-, alas), but as a separate unit it could power mobile phones, LED lights and many other things. All for free, once the device is paid for. It works a bit like an oldstyle outboard motor or lawn mower; you pull the string to generate power. A minute of pulling should give 20 minutes of talk time on the mobile.
Do electric cars, hybrids and solar panels kill third world babies?
2007-09-30 21:19:00
There is a lot of debate about the real world economics of electric cars, hybrids and other alternative power-trains relative to a conventional gas or diesel fueled car. Over at Electronic Design News, Paul Rako has taken a different approach to evaluating the value proposition. He hearkens back to the old TV commercials with Sally Struthers urging viewers to donate money to help feed starving children. Using that as the basis for a virtual currency unit he calls the Struther which is defined as the cost of keeping a child alive for five years he calculates the cost of various options. Some of his calculations are a bit dubious however such as the assumption that the battery in a hybrid only last five years. The idea that spending nearly $100K on a Tesla roadster will sacrifice the lives of fifty children is also questionable. After all, any new technology usually comes in at a high initial price that is necessary to seed a market. Where Rako's calculations make perhaps a little mo...

Abdullah Ibrahim - the third world - underground
2007-09-13 12:24:00
Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly Known as Dollar Brand) is a great piano player and this record is a delight. It has not been released in CD yet, I cannot understand why."This is one of those jazz "albums" that is really a concert selection: Nov. 14, 1972 : Jazz-House Montmartre : Copenhagen, Denmark. The Third World Underground is actually: Don Cherry, Dollar Brand (one of my favorites), and Carlos Ward. . . . a little research reveals that Dollar Brand and Carlos Ward played together fairly regularly. Don Cherry seems to be a temporary addition. Don's Song/Cherry is the first of the disc's two "songs" (more like medleys) and it contains all of the things I love about Dollar Brand's piano-playing: his steady rolling left hand, a minimalism in chord changes, and an almost architectural quality in his chord variety and phrasing. He does a beautiful job of both laying a solid foundation and creating an open space in which the soloists can explore." from earfuzzDollar Brand-piano & vocal...

2007-09-06 01:55:00
I think I need a long week vacation to Philippine. I never had any of it in my life. I lied. You know, I've been busy with lots and lots of work on my plates. So perhaps, I need to plan one or maybe not. Whatever. Why Philippline of all? Philippine is obviously not a cool place to be compared to other third world, no? I mean, take Thailand for example. This country is not just filthy but it has more to offer besides good beach, good resort and (a good temple?? lol-ed) blah blah blah.Do you know why I love Philippine like so much? I really do. There's no other place in this planet where someone on a budget can live like a king. Cigarettes are less than a dollar (it doesn't matter whether it's US, Australian, Canadian, Singapore or heck, even Bruneian dollar for mother of god.) I mean that we say European Union countries still to Nö, if it concerns the entry of Turkey are located nevertheless in the long run still at Turkey. If those place themselves crosswise, break an agreement and simply with itself permit no ships and airplanes from Cyprus and block themselves, that is not our debt! Arizona is a third world economy trying to support world class ambitions
2007-08-01 09:30:00
Arizona State University queried its audience at a recent luncheon about various aspects of the Arizona economy. Among these were the rank of Arizona among the states in per capita income and the average employee wage as a percentage of the U.S. average. The state ranks 39 lowest among 50 in per capita income and 92% of the U.S. average in the average employee wage. This is no surprise as the state is a poor 2nd to California’s coastline in attracting existing business, institutes of higher education and high income residents. These numbers are disappointing as Arizona looks for a business niche where it can dominate - other than copper, citrus, climate, cotton and cattle. The idea here is to establish a solid middle/upper middle class so that its average resident can afford a home and the middle class accouterments for themselves and their children. And then growth is just more likely to follow growth naturally, it is thought, like California’s resilience. It doesn...

Thermo-acoustic stove, fridge and generator for the third world.
2007-06-25 10:25:00
Researchers from British universities, the charity organization Practical Action, American Los Alamos National Laboratory and the hi-fi company GP Acoustics have cooperated in constructing a revolutionary device that is a stove, a fridge and an electric generator all in one. The machine uses thermo acoustics, a spin off technology from space research that can transform the energy in sound waves to electrical power. The super stove channels the heat from a fire into a specially designed chimney, where gas pressure creates sound. The sound is transformed into electrical current via a linear alternator (described as an inverted loudspeaker) and powers the fridge, a computer, a mobile charger or any number of electrical devices. The stove project, SCORE, is so far a concept, but scientists hope to have a pilot rig for trials within four years.
Bringing the third world to the US
2007-06-17 19:01:00
The battle over the Immigration Bill continues. It is seen as a war of us against them. Many in the Republican base think the 'them' are the hoards of brown skinned men, women and children form Central America - they are wrong. The 'us' is the American middle class and the 'them' are the feudal corporate overlords who wish to destroy the American middle class. Now they have shipped nearly every job they can off to third world countries to avoid paying a decent wage and to escape those inconvenient safety laws. There are some jobs that just can't be outsourced like the ones at the Del Monte plant in North Portland that was raided last week. Nine out of ten of the workers supplied to Del Monte by American Staffing Resources was illegal. I for one cannot believe that Del Monte management was not aware of this but they are the 'real' criminals here but will go unpunished. The Del Monte raid gives us even more insight as to why corporations are willing to hire illegals - working...

The third world is coming to a lifestyle near you

When it comes to resources, we are seeing the first faint whispers of the storm that will blow and crash as we just plain run out of things.
