I thought Sydney was under a terrorist attack!
2008-05-11 22:02:00 I'm still shaking as I write this. It's just gone past 6am here in Sydney, and I am thinking back to just how scary it is to be awoken by a huge booming sound at 5:40 in the morning.I really should be used to it by now. The big crashing sound that woke me long before sparrow-fart this morning wasn't an explosion - it was just my ever-considerate Sydney City Council doing it's regular (3 to 4 days a week) task of waking up long before sunrise what is probably the most densely populated residential street in Sydney.Redfern-Waterloo (often referred to as Red-Water) is Sydney's major public housing area. At the far end of my street we have three enormous tower blocks housing well over 1,000 elderly, disabled and sick people, and I live in one of a string of 3-storey "walk-up" blocks of units, housing probably another 500-plus residents. There is no commercial activity at all in my street (aside from a couple of small corner stores). But someone in Sydney City Council decided a year ...

Do you ever suffer from a fearful thought?(Anxiety/Panic attack)
2008-05-09 17:53:00 Do you ever suffer from a fearful thought you can't seem to get out of your mind? So what can be done for people who suffer from fearful thoughts? To begin, lets look at how a fearful thought is powered, and then how to discharge that fearful thought quickly. Say for example you are going about your daily business when a scary thought enters your mind. Maybe you fear you are about to have an anxiety attack. Maybe it's a fear about your health? Whatever the fear, the pattern that follows is usually predictable. You start to feel a knot n your stomach as you contemplate the thought, and you get sucked into a repetitive thinking pattern of fear. The strong emotion (fear) then powers the thought. When the thought comes again, your body 'remembers' the strong emotion, and the fearful thought has an even stronger connection in your mind. You may even continue to spend the rest of your day thinking about that fear. It can become very obsessive and may even keep you from con...

A thought on the social media revolution

Are The Orioles Who We Thought They Were?
2008-05-08 03:42:00 Another game on the West Coast, another loss. I have my hands up in the air after another loss -- this time in extra innings; however, just like others -- close game, the Orioles struggle to come back and then lose in the end. What's to say? The one thing we thought would be the problem isn't the problem (the pitching) -- it's the bleeping offense.I said in the beginning of the year, I'd be happy to see the team improving, in a way it has with the competitive ball games and an effective relief/starting corps. But again the bleeping offense is making me wonder if the Orioles are who we thought they were. Now Roberts won't hit in the .250-260's (at least we hope), and Nick Markakis is far better than what he's showing right now. Huff (he's doing ok, but I still really don't care for the guy) is hitting in the .280's, Scott is struggling. But everyone else? What in the world.Um, I have a news flash -- the offense was going to be a problem with a lack of protection, and it's show...

Creating a Mortgage Fraud Law with Some Bite - A Thought Experiment
2008-05-04 17:19:00 I was just reading an article about how Mortgage Fraud is now a specific crime in Missouri, but couldn’t help but think to myself whether or not this law goes far enough. While I haven’t read the law itself, a $2,500 fine and/or jail is just not going to cut it. The loans must still be written off by the lenders, and of course, what happens is the banks eat up the cost, and the general public funds the bailout. We’ve been bailing out banks due to the housing bubble for months now, and funding the crimes of those people who engaged in mortgage fraud and who in the end, couldn’t afford, or simply didn’t want to pay their mortgage anymore. I was thinking about all of this and came up with an innovative idea that would likely stop 90% of future mortgage fraud. Is it something that would ever go into law — not a chance — but if it did, it could change the fate of lenders and could prevent the average citizen from having to pay for the stupi...

When It Comes to ERP Software, Are You a Thought Leader or a Follower?
2008-05-02 21:58:00 Merriam-Webster defines a “follower” as one that follows the opinions or teachings of another individual. Not yet recognized by Merriam-Webster is “thought leader”, which is defined as an one who is recognized among their peers as an innovative thinker. So what does this have to do with ERP software you might ask? In the world of ERP, there are without doubt, followers and thought leaders. And the more I think about this topic, the more I realize this includes both ERP developers and end users. So ask yourself, are you and your company considered thought leaders or followers? This concept takes me back to college and my beloved psychology classes. At the forefront of my trip down memory lane is Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs as defined in his 1943 paper on A Theory of Human Motivation. Back in 1943 the business community was not yet thinking about ERP software and honestly, I certainly wasn’t thinking about it back in college. But today the two come together i...

I Thought This Was A Good Idea
2008-05-01 17:17:00 This idea came to me from Victoria at Teachings of The Horse when I had written the post about What Happens To Them. Victoria left a comment about putting a feeding schedule up in her barn so that even if something minor had happened and she wasn't able to get home to feed, the instructions would be there and available for someone to take over. What a great idea, I thought. So I created one to hang in my feed shed and I also identified each horse with a small photo. I sealed it in a sandwich bag for protection and detailed the horses and goats feeding instructions. This will be handy when Steve and I take small vacations or drive down to Missouri for a couple of days to pick Zoe up from University. I also created an animal identity page, since we have so many to hang on the fridge with a picture of each creature from outdoor to indoor and their name, so that a neighbor may know them. I know Victoria has something like this, Does anyone else have one of these? Please visit http://mid...

Spare a thought for asthma suffers - today is World Asthma day
2008-05-01 10:47:00   So why are we writing about asthma on our blog?  Because asthma kills between 100 and 200 New Zealanders every year and because New Zealand has one of the highest prevalence rates of asthma in the world.  Around 15% of adults and 20% of children aged 6-14 have asthma. This equates to 1 in 6 New Zealanders – almost 700,000 people in total. That’s like all the people living in Wellington and Christchurch!!  And that’s precisely why most (if not all) life insurance companies want to know if you’re an asthma sufferer before offering you a life insurance policy. If you are, they’ll generally follow a line of further questioning or tests to try and predict if you are likely to die from asthma.  But insurers would also admit (if you could corner them over a beer) that identifying high-risk asthma suffers is a challenge. One of the key indicators is supposedly the number of previous life-threatening asthma attacks you’ve had. Yet in a US study of aroun...

Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse...
2008-04-30 05:19:00 I'm not one to complain a lot, but this is ridiculous. Remember how sick I've been for the past week? Just when I thought I was getting better, things suddenly got worse!!!I ended up in the emergency room at the hospital today (thanks, Mom for dragging me even though I didn't think I needed to go). You see, I sort of knocked myself out from one of those relentless coughing fits. It was non-stop coughing and I couldn't breathe. Oh, it gets even better than this. Not only was I coughing up a lung and unable to breathe, but I had a Fisherman's Friend in my mouth and started choking!!!Yeah. Right after that I ended up knocking myself out and giving myself a beautiful little bump on the back of my head. Nice. Try telling the attending doctor that you knocked your head on the floor and ended up with a bump on your head because you started choking on a Fisherman's Friend!!! Ummm...Not only do I have a bump on the back of my head, but now I also have the most horrific red eye ever!!! ...

I had an awesome time, one of the best trips of my life....and then I come back Friday night. Check the blog. And boom, it's gone =(. The reason? Who knows.. I hadn't posted the Madonna album, so I don't know what I possibly could have gotten booked for. Anyways, what matters is that I'm back, and the blog will be in full force very soon. Of course, some slight changes will have to be made, but it'll all be for the better. Also, I gotta start rebuilding my YouTube account - not cool.Lastly, a HUGE thanks to Rodrigo of Rodo Ros Music! 2008-04-26 21:51:00 I've always thought I had what is considered a "black" name but never really thought much about it. My parents were going to give me a very so called "white" name like Danielle or Elizabeth but instead decided that they wanted to give me a name that they felt better represented my culture. But it's been no big deal to me growing up. That was, until I actually grew up and became an adult. I once had an interview with a guy that owned a small company. I think he kept trying to hint around and find out if I was black. He kept going on and on about my name. I speak standard English and where I lived gave no indication of my background. When I saw him at the restaurant (it was a meet and greet kind of interview) with his assistant, his face literally fell and he was obviously very disappointed. He was very insulting and said things like "You weren't what I expected. I mean wow, you sound so cultured on the phone." He then proceeded to tell me that "Whoever I work with has t...
