Final thoughts on Loyola's exhibition
2009-11-03 19:37:00
Aric Van Weelden was steady at the point on Monday.Surely you can tell by now, after a bunch of posts about a 30-point blowout against an undermanned NAIA school, I was very starved for college basketball to return. Thankfully the games continue with Northwestern's exhibition against Robert Morris on Wednesday, but first some final thoughts about Loyola's victory.-Walt Gibler was very impressive off the bench. He was assertive on offense as he took seven shots in just 15 minutes of play. He also scored 15 points in variety of ways, including a three, two free throws and a couple put-backs around the rim. "I really like Gibler off the bench," said head coach Jim Whitesell. Whitesell also added that Gibler...
Sleeping on it: Deng and Rose thoughts

This movie will mess you up--and other thoughts on the week's new film
2009-10-22 18:32:00
You may have heard some people saying that Lars von Trier's "Antichrist" will shake you up and leave you both stunned and eager to discuss what you just saw. Well, whoever you've been listening to is right. The film has moments that you probably won't be able to watch, and issues about men, women, tragedy and grief that can be hard to take and unpack. But the movie's also oddly beautiful and challenging and fearless, and I dare anyone to see it and not come out with a strong reaction and a lot to say.You should also come out buzzing after "An Education," both because the film is so witty and appealing and smart and because Carey Mulligan, in a role...
Big T's Blazin' Sports Thoughts - Trade Papelbon?
2009-10-19 19:27:00
Will the Red Sox move Papelbon this off season? (AP Photo)Good friend of SawxBlog, Tyler Lemieux offers up some of his thoughts on where the Sox are headed going into this off season, along with what could possibly help out...
Bears Thoughts After Giving Away the Atlanta Game
2009-10-19 08:04:00
The Bears did not lose to the Atlanta Falcons tonight instead they gave away the game by self destructing especially in the Red Zone. Jay Cutler threw 2 bad interceptions and Matt Forte had perhaps the worst game of his short professional career. Add in a terrible night for the special teams and a rough night for the offensive line and it spelled defeat in an extremely winnable football game in the Georgia Dome. How does the special teams have 12 men on the field late in the game when the Falcons had just been forced to punt? That cannot happen but fortunately for the Bears they were bailed out one play later when Matt Ryan threw his 2nd interception...
Balloon boy hoax? What are your thoughts?
2009-10-19 06:52:00
Six-year-old Falcon Heene sits in the box of his family's pickup truck outside their family's home in Fort Collins, Colo., after he was found hiding in a box in a space above the garage on Thursday. (AP)So it was a hoax?At least, that's what news outlets are reporting now after Colorado authorities have said that they've found evidence that proves it was a publicity stunt.According to CNN.com, the "aha!" moment was when Falcon Heene said on 'Larry King Live,' "You guys said we did this for the show."Also, the AP reported this following paragraph, which appeared in today's RedEye:"Documents show that a media outlet has agreed to pay money to the Heenes with regards to the balloon incident, Alderden said....
Random Thoughts From the Chicago Sports Scene
2009-10-11 22:28:00
Once in a awhile I like to look at some of the happenings in the sports world rather than just concentrating a blog post on just one sport. So here are some thoughts and questions that I have been observing and wondering about for a while.Did you know that the over/under total of wins for the Bears in Las Vegas when the season began was 8 1/2? You have to think that the large numbers of Chicagoans who travel to Vegas must have put some serious money down on the over. The Bears look pretty solid and with Jay Cutler at the controls it would take a real collapse to not win at least 9 games. The total bet in Vegas...
Bye Weekend Thoughts and THE PICKS!
2009-10-09 11:01:00
Dan Pompei's love letter to recent draft classes feels a little premature.  I'm a big fan of Jerry Angelo but let's see more than four games before we start believing statements like, "Before camp started, the Bears didn't know if they could count on Afalava, Bowman, [Kellen] Davis, Knox, Bennett and [Chris] Williams. Now they don't know if they could keep winning without them."  I'm not saying the ability of all these young guys doesn't bode well for the future of the organization.  I'm just not ready to raise the 2009 championship banner yet.Courageously, Mike Martz waited until three consecutive terrific performances to apologize for his silly comments that followed Jay Cutler's week one press conference.  I'm not going to...
Thoughts on Milton Bradley rumors...
2009-09-21 20:24:00
I was once a huge advocate of the Mets acquiring Milton Bradley, I was willing to accept the 50lbs. of baggage he brought with him for the talent he would provide.Since 2003 he has hit .267 or better every year and four of those years he hit over .300 with a lifetime Slg. pct. .450 and OBP .371. In 2008 he was selected to the All-Star team and received League MVP votes (17). He is an injury risk but nothing significant over the past five seasons he averaged 132 gms. per season with his high point being 141 in 2004 and low 75 gms in 2005. In 2007 Bradley was signed by the A's, during the season he was injured and the team asked him to slow his rehab to get a look at a youngster, when he refused he was DFA. The Royals ended up picking him up but it was rumored that the Mets loosely kept an eye on his situation. Now I admit when I'm wrong, as I said before I was a big advocate of the Mets acquiring Bradley and not just in 2007 but again in 2008. One of the most convincing aspects tha...
What are your thoughts on State wide smoking bans?
2009-09-21 00:25:00
Curious George, C.Ac asked: With the state of Wisconsin joining 25 other states in banning almost all smoking within indoor public places, I’m curious what people think? How is smoker’s “right” any more a civil liberty than a non-smoker’s “right” not to suffer a smoke filled environment?Get Your Free E-Cigarette Sample Kit! – Click Here
Thoughts on ACORN scandal
2009-09-20 00:28:00
Thoughts on ACORN: 1. A few employees doing wrong things doesn't mean that ACORN is a bad group. It's hard to have 100% conscientious employees. Maybe the guerrilla reporters just found four or five bad employees (in a row). 2. It wasn't corruption, however. The worker who accepted underage prostitution as a swath of the American mosaic didn't ask for anything in return or even seemed shocked by the whole thing. Perhaps the ACORN ethos of helping people help themselves (to your tax money) overwhelms other considerations. Or, maybe they're just used to dealing with these kind of people in the same way that West Virginia doctors are used to treating people for Opossum poisoning and San Francisco surgeons see gerbilectomies as routine procedures. 3. The problem with ACORN for me is that it's a federally funded group that exists to promote a left-wing agenda. It's like a left-wing faith-based organization. Come to think of it, community organizers are like lefty missionaries,...
Thoughts on Vikings – Lions by Bill Simmons
2009-09-18 17:26:00
LIONS (+9.5) over Vikings Has Brad Childress ever given an interview in which it didn't look like he should be staring through penitentiary glass holding a black phone? (Wait a second, did I just pick the Lions? That was an accident. Hold on.) Vikings (-9.5) over LIONS Much better. I have two Adrian Peterson thoughts. First, he combines my favorite single qualities of five different great running backs: Walter Payton (the move where he breaks a tackle, then stiff-arms a tackler coming from behind to buy a second while getting his legs churning again); Barry Sanders (the part where he's so electric that it's just not worth betting heavily against his team because he can singlehandedly break you); Eric Dickerson (the way he cruises through a hole and you wait for him to kick it into another gear for a split second before realizing he's running away from everyone already); Emmitt Smith (a nasty edge that can only be described as "Look, there's no way we're losing this game and th...
no Food For Thoughts
2009-09-17 07:58:00
A woman and her child wait in an impoverished locality of Khori Garden for free distribution of food items at the same place where a tragic stampede occured on September 14, in Karachi on September 16, 2009. Pakistan has opened a judicial inquiry into a stampede that killed 20 women and children on September 14 queuing for food handouts in an impoverished district of financial capital Karachi. Introduction Thank you for the opportunity to write a final statement after the week of reflections on my book, The Naked Gospel.  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the reviews and interacting with the readers as well. Zak Claxton's Thoughts on Music Venue Cover Charges in Second Life
2009-09-15 02:05:00
Zak weighs in on Second Life Cover Charges by Zak Claxton: via http://zakclaxton.blogspot.com- "Since everybody and their respective monkeys have offered an opinion on the proposals to standardize cover charges at Second Life live music shows, I felt a need to add my L$10 to the fray. Don't worry; I don't think you'll find anything particularly inflammatory or controversial here. Just a few thoughts on the topic. First, the background.Flame On!Late last month, the Second Life Newspaper ran an article on a cover charge system that was brought up by a fellow SL musician, Mankind Tracer. Note that I said "brought up"; he's hardly the first person to suggest this plan, nor the first to implement it. But he seems to be the focus of the controversy for current go-round of the idea that SL audiences should pay a cover charge to see live music events, as opposed to relying on people's desire to tip artists and venues on their own accord. Why is this even being considered?Pretty simple an...
Thoughts about the President?s Address to Schoolchildren
2009-09-09 07:55:00
On few issues have those who have taken issue with the points we have made stood on as solid ground as have these critics on the issue of the President’s speech to schoolchildren yesterday.  Indeed, despite the outcry on the right, many of our philosophical confrères shared our critics sentiments and thought the speech was ...
Thoughts on Top Chef (Season 6, Ep. 1-3)
2009-09-05 05:02:00
I’m keeping up with Top Chef through iTunes, and it’s been way past time to throw in some armchair commentary–just to add to the gaggle of food bloggers already doing so.  Do I need to say that there will be spoilers in this?  Just stop reading if you haven’t seen the first three episodes of season six yet. Episode 1: Sin City Vice The first episode wasn’t as high pressure as season five’s opening round in New York, where someone was sent home almost right off the plane, before entering the kitchen.  Instead, being Las Vegas, it was high stakes.  They’ve introduced large cash prizes on top of the usual immunity for winning the quick fire round at the beginning of the show.  I’m a fan of the quick fire challenge because I always speculate on what I would do if in that situation.  They’ve been getting more difficult each season, but the caliber of chefs has been increasing also. There are always those clues in the first five...

UFC 103 Thoughts and Predictions
2009-08-28 14:01:00
Tomorrow nights UFC 103 event is exciting overall, Randy Couture is a good draw, but like most long-time fight fans I wish I saw it about 5 years ago when both fighters were actually in their prime.  None the less, I am rooting for Randy 'The Natural' Couture (16-9-0) to beat Antonio Rodrigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira (31-5-1) this Saturday night.  ...
Pre-Fake Game Final Thoughts
2009-08-22 15:56:00
I'll be on here throughout the early part of the game tonight, providing my stirring mix of comic musings and football commentary.  Tomorrow morning I'll be watching the recording of the game and doing some more in-depth stuff. A few day-of things to think about...Vaughn McClure has a pretty interesting piece about Jamar Williams' quest for playing time among some of the best linebackers around.  With the man in the middle gaining in years, I'd start expecting to see Lovie move to something of a rotation with this corps.David Haugh mentions in his column that he'd like to see the team get Matt Forte going.  I couldn't disagree more.  Get Matt Forte in for a series and then off the...
Thorrington's Thoughts
2009-08-21 11:11:00
Hey everyone, kind of a slower news day (so far...) for the Fire so I thought I'd run a little piece giving you guys John Thorrington's take on the yellow card that he picked up Wednesday night and on how his previously injured groin held up in the match....
Five Quick Thoughts
2009-08-16 20:11:00
Just wrapped up watching the entirety of this ballgame and here's five thoughts.1. On the quarterbacks.  (1) Don't worry about Jay Cutler's performance.  Without Matt Forte and Greg Olsen (the team's other two dynamic weapons), it is nearly impossible to gauge how this offense is going to look.  (2) I was quite impressed with Caleb Hanie.  He has a solid arm, good vision down the field and seems to be comfortable when scrambling outside the pocket.  (3) Brett Basanez should not make this or any other club's 53 man roster.2.  Trent Edwards went 10-for-10.  Trent Edwards looked an awful lot like every quarterback the Bears faced in 2008.  If Green Bay runs the ball fifteen times on opening night, I'll...
Julie and Julia - Kitchen Thoughts
2009-08-07 14:55:00
Marcy Goldman is a new friend. I met Marcy some time ago, and we just seem to hit it off really well. I respect Marcy's hard work and experience as a talented baker and chef. I wanted to celebrate the movie Julie and Julia, and while I'm sure I will have more to say about Julia Child's kitchen, I want to start off with this very wonderful and interesting piece, written by my new friend Marcy. Marcy Goldman is a cookbook author and master baker, and the creator of BetterBaking.com. She is an occasional baking guest on Martha Stewart Sirius and this fall has two new cookbooks coming out, as well as the current A Passion for Baking, Oxmoor House 2007. Follow Marcy on Twitter. Marcy's newest cookbooks, A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking, and The New Best of Betterbaking.com, both Whitecap Books, will be available September 2009. A few thoughts on the Gates debacle
2009-07-24 20:45:00
Since the arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (now with its own authoritative Wikipedia page!) hit the news, I've had a few civilian friends and acquaintances ask me if I was going to write about it.  My initial response was "no", not wanting to contribute to the endless re-hashing of the latest racially-charged police media event.  I've since reconsidered, and want to throw out a few thoughts on the subject.Events like this provide the stage and setting for a series of ritualized responses by a variety of people and organizations.  It's like a play--we all show up with our own script that dictates how we'll act and what we'll say, based on whatever beliefs and prejudices we already hold.  I...
Random Roy Halladay to Philly Thoughts
2009-07-20 19:39:00
Random Roy Halladay to Philly Thoughts Before we get going you might want to check out the fresh ESPN video from 11am this morning: Quote for Insider If the Jays know they won’t be able to re-sign Halladay after the 2010 season — and the guess here is that Halladay already has indicated to the Jays, respectfully and ...
More thoughts from summer league chatter

A couple more thoughts on gay panic and murder
2009-07-16 17:07:00
This is Scott Lee Loughman, murderer.  Looks like a regular middle class kid, doesn't he?  The recent acquittal of Joseph Biedermann reminded me of Loughman's case.I met Scott in October 1995.  It was a few minutes after one of our officers, in a phenomenal stroke of luck, spotted Scott's car as she pulled out of our parking lot at the beginning of her shift.  Scott was wanted on a warrant from DeKalb County, Georgia.  Scott murdered his 46-year-old "roommate", Garland.  According to the reports we got from Georgia, a friend of Garland had discovered his body and called the police.  According to a witness, Garland's partner had died several months earlier. In his loneliness, Garland had taken up with "street hustlers", one of...
Thoughts on Jack White's band collection
2009-07-16 16:59:00
Is it worse for a musician to do too little or too much? To be unfocused, or focused on everything?Jack White is awfully prolific, churning out sizzling blues-rock in the White Stripes, more anthemic, pop-influenced rock in the Raconteurs, and now, in his latest band, a moodier version of his previous outfits with the Alison Mosshart-fronted the Dead Weather. Considering the fact that plenty of popular bands out there aren't any good, it's hard to fault a guy who's part of three groups that are, in fact, all worth hearing. (Actually, that's selling them short; while Dead Weather is just a good side project, Raconteurs and White Stripes are both pretty great.) Yet does all this branching out make it...
Bulls vs Warriors (Summer League Game 1) thoughts
2009-07-15 07:33:00
James Johnson looked really good to me, and let me tell you the Bulls are very high on this guy.   It will be interesting to see what type of role he's able to fill for them this year.   Judging by this game he's clearly playing with a SF skill set.  On offense he was knocking down his jumpers, finishing at the basket, leading the break, and made great passes all night.   All in all, about the only negatives I could say about his game offensively is that he seemed to struggle to get involved off the ball, and that he looked pretty awkward in the post during the one post up attempt I saw. Defensively, Johnson was a...
A few Random Thoughts Posts
2009-07-14 22:04:00
Maybe it’s the summer, maybe it’s the conversations I’ve been having of late, maybe it’s the time I’ve been spending helping out at Outfest, maybe it’s my renewed focus on my dissertation, but I expect to be doing a number of “Random Thoughts” type of post in the next few days. . . . So, if ...
Zoos, Habit(at)s and Thoughts on Animal and Human Freedom
2009-07-13 05:46:00
In Yann Martel?s acclaimed book ?Life of Pi? the first person narrator defends the case for zoos and discusses notions of freedom from the point of view of animals. Some people criticize zoos for being confined spaces as opposed to the natural habitat and forms of life and it boils down to questions of freedom and happiness. Are zoos a form of jail for the animals and are they unhappy there? Are they stressed because of all the human attention and the clicking cameras and the pointy fingers?A zoo is indeed a confined space, but it comes with various advantages. One of them is safety; another is a steady supply of food. In the wild it is literally a jungle. All the animals need to hunt for food in order to avoid starvation, but with it there is the constant danger of becoming prey to other stronger and fiercer animals. In the zoo they may lose some of those killer instincts, but they are fed and protected by humans. In the book, there is an analysis of how animals are actually very co...

Romanticised Vacation-Inspired Thoughts “There is really no drinking half as enjoyable as daytime drinking, when the sun is out, the bars are empty of dilettantes, and the afternoon stretches ahead of you like summer vacation. Searching for Positive Thoughts
2009-07-06 04:28:00
After a three game ass kicking I’m searching for positives… and I can’t seem to find any. Perhaps the only good thing I can think of is good guy Scott Richmond will continue to receive MLB service time while being on the DL. Doesn’t seem like much but for an older rookie that has to be ...
Simple Ideas ? key to creating winning PR campaigns ? thoughts from Cannes
2009-06-25 07:27:00
Ashwani has been reporting from Cannes and he has put up an interesting post on how to produce winning PR campaigns. What he said that I like the most was that any campaign has to be built around a central idea, an idea that is simple yet executed well. I also remember having a chat with Prema Sagar before she left for Cannes (she is the only Indian member to be part of the jury) that one of the core things that she look for will be a clear and simple idea and how that has been executed.

Eight pitchers = one win and other random thoughts
2009-06-19 18:25:00
Eight pitchers = one win Can’t beat that. I’m usually against the Jays carrying this much organizational bullpen depth (trade for a bat is my logic) but it certainly came in handy yesterday. HR City A grand total of 11 combined HR by both teams in the past two games. That was fun Back on track I’ll admit, I ...
Positive thoughts
2009-06-17 10:13:00
Today's Positive Thought   At the heart of everyone is a perfect child of God. Today's Positive Affirmation   I have great respect for all the others who share my world. Today's Positive Visualization   I take an even breath and see myself as a perfect child of God. In my mind's eye, I acknowledge that others who share my world are also God's perfect children. I imagine myself going through my day thinking positive thoughts for all who I encounter. I see myself calm and peaceful at the end of the day with a feeling of gratitude for all who were a part of my day. I combine these images with joy and let them go, knowing that they will create the good things I am visualizing and thinking. Positive thoughts courtesy of Marty Dow

fanglefashioned? (First Thoughts)
2009-06-16 13:30:00
You hear about things being old-fashioned, or newfangled, but those are never reversed. I wonder why? Why can't a horse-and-buggy be oldfangled?See? I may not be able to rebuild society in the event that a cataclysm destroys it. But I will be able to help out by creatively describing both the former and new civilizations. So keep me around.
Thoughts from the road
2009-06-11 19:00:00
I hate to drive. I drive to work and back and that’s about it. Anytime we go somewhere as a family I make Lee drive. Whenever I go out with my friends I try to convince one of them to pick me up. Driving sucks. So imagine my excitement on the four hour drive to meet my mom in Chicago for our birthday trip to Vega. Four hours in a car. By myself. Good times. To keep myself entertained I turned the radio up really loud. Thank goodness for XM. I didn’t have to suffer through any static on the trip. Just my kind of music. All the way there. Lee worries about me when I drive. So to prepare he always makes sure all of the car’s fluids are full (oil, windshield washer fluid, etc) and he fills it up with gas. The tires on my truck need to be replaced so he borrowed some tires from a friend just for my trip. The new tires are a little taller than my old crappy tires. So I spent the whole trip worried I was going to topple over in my SUV like I keep hearing about on the news...
9-23-37: Thoughts on Memory
2009-06-10 09:36:00
Perhaps, it happened because in hitting on an idea for a new screenplay, my creative mind had come alive, pushing aside everyday details. On Monday, after working out, while spinning the dial on my lock, I could no longer remember the combination.  When I had stopped at 27, I knew that wasn’t the second number, but ...
Two Thoughts on Unrelated Topics
2009-06-01 20:30:00
Due to a number of obligations, I may not be able to blog until later in the day (as in early evening GayPatriot blog time), but before I get to other pressing matters, wanted to throw out two thoughts on unrelated topics. First, under what authorization is the President spending taxpayer money to invest in/bailout GM?  ...
A Weekend (Almost) Devoid of Politics/Thoughts of Actors & Acting
2009-06-01 10:18:00
Perhaps, it’s because most of our readers know us only as guys who blog primarily about politics that they assume politics is all we do.  And sometimes, a lot of news relates to the things we blog about, it sometimes seems that way, to me at least. And yet, Bruce loves his dogs and is fascinated ...
Thoughts about a Blue Jean Jacket:or, Continuing the House Cleaning
2009-05-29 10:50:00
When I first posted on my house cleaning yesterday early in the afternoon Pacific Time, I had intended to take only about an hour or so to go through my closets and cupboards so I could come up with some stuff to sell at my friend’s yard sale.  And just in case, you’re in LA, ...
Thoughts of charities
2009-05-25 22:48:00

Random Thoughts: Parenting, Anal Rape, and Texting Teenage Drivers
2009-05-23 22:56:00
I’m hard on bad parents because they are ruining the world. They park their kids in front of inappropriate television shows or violent video games. They ignore them. They feed them garbage. They put work and happy hour before family. They over-medicate and often don’t teach their kids to take no for an answer. Then these same parents act surprised when their fat, high, spoiled, or stupid teenagers make awful choices. Instead of looking within for fault, they blame others and hire high-priced lawyers to continue the cycle. Good parents sometimes make mistakes. But bad parents are worse. Bad parents are collectively responsible for failing schools, high crime rates, youth violence, obese children, and a host of other ills plaguing society. And then their kids have more kids and the cycle keeps repeating itself. When are we going to stop the madness? Here are some local stories about a few bad seeds whose parents should be investigated right along with their kids. Four stu...

Creating Media Assets on Social Media Platforms: Scale, Scope and Thoughts
2009-05-22 17:20:00
It is interesting to see a lot of pages come up on Facebook these days. Essentially meant as a medium for brands to be part of social networking it is slowly turning into avenues that earlier groups used to provide. By definition pages on Facebook were meant to be this: A Facebook Page is a public profile that enables you to share your business and products with Facebook users. Avid users of Facebook will agree with me that a lot of pages that they become fans of these days have gone beyond the scope of this definition. So we have pages of attitudes, places, food, etc. in place of brand names that people are becoming fans of. Now this isn’t just some fancy trend created by a few page owners. A lot of these pages have gone on to be amongst the fastest growing pages, and are highly interactive. The reason behing their growth is the same as why people join communities on networks, or join action groups, or sport their favourite jersey. So what was initially a platform which curt...
