Mumbai thoughts from Indian Physician
2008-11-28 12:17:00 Our good blog friend Vijay is a radiologist in the state/province of Tamil Nadu in India. Like the rest of us, he learned of the situation in Mumbai via twitter. And, those of us who know Vijay were sending supportive "tweets" when we were watching all the live coverage on television/internet.Vijay recorded a Scan Man Speaks podcast yesterday to share his thoughts on the situation. Podcasts are so cool in that it really brings the blog off the page - and lets you hear the passion and emotion of the writer. The podcast is about 20 minutes long and you will need iTunes to listen to it. The last five minutes of the recording are very good. I also encourage you to subscribe to the Scanman twitter feed to get the thoughts of a citizen of India during this tragedy.

Real Housewives of ATL Reunion Show: My Thoughts.
2008-11-25 22:00:00 *Update* My thoughts on the reunion show:Kim was all over the place last night, and cancer Kim? Really? I mean I hope for her sake she wasn't lying, because if she was, she really needs help. And going back over some of the whoppers Kim has told already, I wouldn't put it past her to make up some stuff just to try to get sympathy. *UPDATE* Kim has claimed that she thought she'd "get killed" after the reunion show. Ridiculous.Deshawn was... wait was she even there? Moving on..Lisa. Last night, we found out that Lisa was how Kim found out about Nene's song through Sheree.. or via speakerphone. If Kim is saying that Lisa told her about Nene's song on the speakerphone, given Kim's track record, it's probably a lie, so I'm gonna go with Lisa telling the story to Sheree (in confidence) then Sheree blabbing to Kim about it. Real classy Sheree. And Sheree gets my harshest criticism in this post. First of all, Sheree, since you like to "keep it classy," classy people don't keep ...

My Thoughts On The Knicks Deals!
2008-11-22 23:01:00 The New York Knicks made two big deals yesterday. First, they traded Jamal Crawford to Golden State for Al Harrington. Then, they sent Zach Randolph to the LA Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. These aren't really great basketball trades, but they're still great trades. The Knicks have freed up some money to run after LJ and one of his friends. Stephen A. Smith explains: I don't think a pairing of LJ and Amare Stoudamire would be bad. I agree that Walsh made great moves, but he's still got to back this up get the big money guys in 2010. If he can't do that, this was all done for nothing. But, like I said before, I have faith in him. I hope all of New York does, they've still got to employ patience. I wonder if they're going to trade away high draft picks to keep cap space open. I wouldn't be surprised to see them near the top of the lottery, especially since they lost their threat down low. Anyway, good job Knicks management! It feels good to write that.
Friday Links and Other Thoughts
2008-11-21 16:15:00 Can we make a rule that no one can call a 9-5 office after 4:00 on Fridays? Getting a business phone call at 4:45 on a Friday afternoon is just painful. The guys at Hugging Harold Reynolds created a great list of comparisons of Food Network starts and NFL Quarterbacks. While watching the Steelers game last night, I felt that Cincinnati Bengals? defensive end Jonathan Fanene has an unfortunate last name.On a similar topic of names, I?m including this Yahoo story about scientists finding the remains and grave of Copernicus. The reason? My seventh grade World History teacher sincerely pronounced his name Copper-nicus. In addition, Socrates was So-crates (like Crates and Barrel)I applaud Yahoo for including Izzie Stevens of Grey?s Anatomy in its article about five TV characters they would love to kill off. The episode where she killed her "fiancé" was the last one I watched. Yes, I understand that admitting that I used to watch Grey?s Anatomy will significantly lower my gender analy...

Thoughts on the new President
2008-11-12 00:13:00 So alot of pundits and conservative opponents of Obama are wondering how President Obama will govern, and are smacking their lips in anticipation of bad news on day one of his Presidency. How much more does this man need to accomplish?! He has run arguably one of the most successful and disciplined campaigns in historyHe has already shown prudence in selecting Rahm Israel Emanuel as his Chief of Staff. President Obama is no doubt a visionary, and as a visionary myself, I know that such men have a tendency to avoid the details. Mr Emanuel is the perfect offset for this trait. His "take-no-prisoners attitude" earned him the nickname "Rahm-bo" in Chicago. He has already shown us his principles. He is a man who places his family above all, doesnt back down from legitimate criticism, and refuses to smear others for the sake of political gain. When Governor Palin's daughter became pregnant, Obama said. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-...

Thoughts on Etnocentrism and "Race-Mixing"
2008-11-10 05:14:00 White nationalists tend to say that any White person who dates or marries outside the White race is a "race traitor" who is engaging in "race mixing" and is fostering "racial suicide". They also say that any such person must be a "White self-hater" with no love or pride on their own people. This post will examine whether or not that is so. It will also examine ethnocentrism cross-culturally, with a view towards whether or not it is normal. It will also examine the tendency among human groups to simultaneously guard their women from outsiders while attempting the males also attempt to mate with outsiders.I argue that all of these things are cultural norms in human beings and may have biological or genetic origins.I've been talking to some of my smart friends about this stuff and here's what we came up with.I noted that I have met persons from all over the world. One tendency that I noted among most, but not all, persons, was ethnocentrism, often of an extreme type. They all had a lo...

Make That Move - A Thursday Thoughts Special Post
2008-11-06 13:00:00 So... we have a new President Elect. A man of principle, hope, eloquence and strength. Hubby and I (and oh so many of our friends and acquaintances) are simply ecstatic with the outcome of this amazing election and cannot wait until President Obama takes office in January.Barack Obama, I am confident, will lead our nation well. His very election has already done so much to unite us as a country. Indeed, countries all over the world closely took note - watching along with us as results came in. From England to Africa, Australia to Indonesia, people watched as Obama delivered his acceptance speech and spoke not only to the people of the United States of America but, in fact, the world. Not only do we live in a country where you can do and be anything you set your mind to, but there is hope that oppressed individuals the world over will one day be free to live up to their goals and dreams. Yes we can.On a much tinier, entirely waaaaayyy less significant note, this unification of our gl...
Obama Elected 44th President
2008-11-06 05:05:00 Barack Obama has been elected president in a landslide victory over Senator John McCain. However, listening to the pundits, commentators and citizenry today, this is an aside compared to the history-making of the assention of the first “African-American”- to the highest office in the land. Plans for R&R and Some Thoughts on Traveling
2008-10-27 05:54:00 The hubby and I were thrilled to have met with old friends last Saturday. It has been a while since we last saw this wonderful family, December of last year to be exact. One of the things we talked about was traveling in February. They were able to get hold of one of our local airline’s promo packages and you wouldn’t believe how much they got it for! A thousand bucks, roundtrip air tickets for the whole family! That is such a steal! What did you know, I did not waste a minute and hurried to the site, just in case the promo was still available. Too bad, it was not anymore. It would have been fun gracing the island of Boracay once again, this time, with dear friends. We had our honeymoon there in 2001 and it was so long ago that we have to go! Even my mother asked me this morning via YM if we will ever push through to fly to Singapore anytime before the year ends and honestly I have got no concrete answer to that just now. I know I could make use of one of those ai...
Tilting at Windmills
2008-10-25 20:01:00 “Tilting at Windmills” is a metaphoric expression of the futility of fighting a battle one cannot win. The idea is the product of an adventure experienced by the hero in Cervantes’ Don Quixote. In the story, Quixote, a slightly off-kilter errant-knight, mistakes a row of windmills for evil giants and charges them with ...

Saturday Morning Thoughts, If Any...
2008-10-25 10:53:00 Good morning. Game three of the 2008 World Series has a first pitch time of 8:35pm EDT tonight in the City of Brotherly Love (and cheesesteak sandwiches...I like Genos). It will be the 40 plus Jamie Moyer facing the ALCS MVP Matt Garza. I look for the Rays to take a 2-1 series lead after this one with a blistering offensive attack and a Garza who will render the Phillies helpless. Look for the lefty Price to come in for the final four or five outs. If the Red Sox land Mark Teixeira and successfully trade Mike Lowell (only AFTER the Tex acquisition is final), look for a 1-7 lineup something like this...Coco/EllsburyPedroiaTeix-eiraYoukilisOrtizBayDrewHow's that sound? That lineup is in the Sox thinking...I would put Big Papi in after Tex and follow with Youk, Bay and Drew. But this is all preliminary imagination run wild. I also read a Massarotti Boston Globe blog post that suggested such a lineup. First things first, though...sign Teixeira. Then a power-packed lineup will return to...

NLCS Thoughts and Playoff Reflections; Markakis & A New Contract...
2008-10-09 15:33:00 The 2008 playoffs resume tonight as game one of the NLCS is played in the City of Brotherly Love.Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers take on the Phillies; thus, for me, although I am a fan of the Orioles, the NL style of baseball appeals to me a lot more. That being said, I am very interested to see how this series turns out. Both teams match up well with their lineups, as well as their pitching staffs although I think Philadelphia might have a slight edge with their bullpen (because of Brad Lidge). I think the starters for the first three games are suitable, there?s a significant drop-off from there with their starting rotations for both teams. That?s why I see things so even matched up.Right now, I am picking the Dodgers in seven games for the upset. Why?I think the Dodgers have been greatly underestimated, and obviously Manny in that lineup makes the difference; however, I think Joe Torre has also been a calming influence on this team as well by virtue of his experience dealing in New Yor...

Red Sox ALCS Pitching Rotation Thoughts...
2008-10-08 11:39:00 Who starts game one against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night? Knowing the answer to that will help all the other rotation questions become clearer. It looks like the Sox will start Daisuke Matsuzaka on Friday down in Florida, with Beckett to follow. Matsuzaka will face James Shields, who is a tough customer. Jon Lester will open up the Fenway Park trio of games by starting game three, with Wakefield (NOT Byrd) to follow. That way Lester, clearly the best Red Sox pitcher on the planet, would be in line to start game seven, if there is a need for a game seven. Why not pitch Jon in game one? Simple...he would be pitching on three days rest, and with a long series in store, that is not necessary. Ex-ace Josh Beckett said this about Lester..."Shit, he's a man," Beckett said when asked of Lester's performance in the ALDS. "There ain't nobody who wants to face him right now.Well put, Josh. Right now, Lester is one of the top lefthanders in all of baseball. Why, do you ask, will he no...

Final Debate Thoughts
2008-09-27 04:42:00 Fresh in from Dan (GayPatriotWest): I think McCain won the middle third (but just barely), the last third by a larger margin. He did a very good job distinguishing himself from W. He looked more at the camera than did Obama and seemed more confident in the last third or so. Used a lot more specifics. But, let me repeat the big takeaway (and you were the first to point this out . . . to me at least), McCain was plaing offense, Obama defense. Finally, Obama tried to be Reagan-esque at the end, but talked our country down more than appealing to the best in us. Finally, wish there were an um-o-meter to measure the number of “ums” each candidate utters. At least Obama won one. My final thoughts: Can Congress pass a law to keep T. Boone Pickens off of my television? And, if Senator Obama was TRULY “post-partisan”, wouldn’t he NOT have had a “spin room”? And, can someone call Roger Ailes and let him know there is a new way of delivering news on...

Breakfast Thoughts: Lavender Oatmeal Squares
2008-09-24 16:02:00 Let's interrupt our usual programming of decadent and creamy treats to talk about breakfast, shall we? You know, that "most important meal" of the day, the one that also defines our lifestyle, mood, habits. Even the last edition of Saveur, almost entirely devoted to breakfast made it to my mailbox right when I had breakfast oatmeal squares in the oven...sign.Over the past years, I have been catching myself saying I love breakfast but what I should really say is "I'd love to have breakfast". I hardly have time or appetite in the morning for more than a cup of coffee and a few spoonfuls of yogurt. Everyday I tell clients about the benefits of a balanced breakfast and yet this is a classic case of "do as I say and not as I do". Bad me.It has not always been the case. As a typical French child, my mom would fix hot chocolate, toast and jam, maybe a yogurt, before heading to school. Sometimes toast was a croissant or a slice of brioche (toasted with some honey, please!). More or less o...

A Few Thoughts On the Financial Crisis
2008-09-23 18:14:00 You know, the smart thing to do regarding this financial bail-out for the ‘bad’ debt mortgages, is to simply give those homes to the homeowners and wipe out their debts. This makes a lot more sense then bailing out those corrupt financial institutions, which should be allowed to fail. By giving the homes to their occupants ...
Random Thoughts
2008-09-23 15:20:00 I have a lot to write about, so don't mind me while I'm all over the place. - Based on my drive to New Jersey this weekend, I declare Maryland to be the new Delaware. It took me two hours and 15 minutes to get from Arlington, VA to the tunnel in Baltimore on Friday afternoon and there was Maryland traffic on Sunday. No traffic on either day in Delaware. Plus, gas is more expensive at the Maryland House rest stop than its counterparts in Delaware and New Jersey. - Two comments about the Steelers game and this is nothing new from what you have already read elsewhere. First, the offensive line, um, struggled. Second, I still question why Coach Mike Tomlin didn?t kick a field goal late in the fourth quarter when the Steelers needed two scores. I was yelling at the TV even before Phil Simms did. Tomlin?s reason from Monday?s Post-Gazette: "Absolutely not," Tomlin replied. "We did not move the ball consistently enough to say that had we kicked the field goal and got the onside kick ...

Monday Morning Links and Other Thoughts
2008-09-08 15:54:00 It?s so nice to have football back! To see the Steelers have an impressive season debut in defeating Houston. To know that there are games on for approximately 10 hours from Sunday early afternoon to Sunday night. To walk around the grocery store on a Sunday and see people wearing their football jerseys. (Although why was one guy wearing an A.J. Hawk Packers? jersey when the team doesn?t play until Monday?) To follow your fantasy football teams and hope that Terrell Owens can score big points while his quarterback Tony Romo does not (or worse to root for Reggie Bush for one league and against him in another). Welcome back professional football!Have you watched any football highlights from yesterday? If so, you may have noticed every announcer gushing over Brett Favre?s touchdown pass where he threw a terrible ball on a fourth down that somehow manager to find an open receiver. It?s only a matter of time (probably next week) when that same pass is intercepted. On to the links?...

Sex Offenders: Second Thoughts
2008-09-03 18:07:00 After I posted a couple of pieces on child molester mass hysteria, they got linked to some sex offender support groups and I got some comments. I started doing a lot more research, and I must say, I am not impressed with the sex offender support groups or their research. One of their favorite papers claims to show only 5% recidivism rate over 3 years or 10 years or 15 years or whatever, but apparently that's fraudulent. One good study did find a 25% recidivism rate after 15 years. This is the same study that the RSO (registered sex offender) supporters quote as having a 5% relapse rate. At that's only for reoffenses. While at Fresno State in the early 1990's, I did a ton of reading in journals. I liked the psychology journals a lot.In one I found a study that used confidential interview procedures to determine the true rate of recidivism, because a lot of these guys reoffend and don't get caught.Anyway, these guys can admit to molesting kids online or in an interview, and there's...

Post Convention Thoughts
2008-09-01 07:04:00 So I've had a few days to consider my overall impression of the Democratic National Convention. While it was certainly a fantastic experience (excellent networking, exceptional star gazing, fantastic speeches, interesting panels and round tables), I think, for me, it boils down to an almost catastrophic waste of resources. Let me say at the outset that I recognize the need to rile up the base for the election season. I understand that without an energized, hardcore set of volunteers, the party would be sunk. I'm not sure, however, that the party needs to spend the millions of dollars it did to achieve that effect. I sat in the Pepsi Center on Wednesday night watching the multi video screens scrolling text and flashing stars wondering if we really needed all of that? The party spends four years raising money from major donors just so they can spend a chunk of that money to throw lavish parties for said donors at the Convention. It seems a little nuts.Yes, it all looks great o...

Psychiatric thoughts
2008-08-28 20:01:00 Having spoken to another member of my meditation group last week was inspired to return to that path, and am now hopefully going to do it more often and as a result have to rely (which can't be done) a lot less on the world outside and more in the inner. Of course everyone who takes drugs knows you can feel better by tweaking things, but they do it by changing body chemistry directly which is like putting piss in your petrol tank. If they knew about meditation first and tried it many would do that, as some do on the drugs programme by my group. But the point is there are ways we can feel better and meditation is the only one that's safe. I suppose in India, where my guru comes from, this is like telling your grandma to suck eggs (you blow them, how many people knew that?), but over here in the west most people think it's weird and then erode their organs and mind with drugs for the same purpose. Now whether the course I took means the lectures are as important as the methods is kn...
