Howlin Rain's The Russian Wilds and other thoughts from the critic
2012-02-02 22:55:00
We’ve been jamming here in The Jam Room for a few months now and I’m starting to get a few emails. It’s easy to get a little self-impressed when somebody contacts you for help. And most artists definitely need help (in more ways than we can provide). While reviewing music for The Bradley (University) Scout... Read more »
Neuroscientists create computer program that can decode your thoughts
2012-02-01 14:14:00
From ExtremeTech: Neuroscientists from the University of California, Berkeley have successfully decoded brain activity into audible sounds. In a study that included 15 subjects, the researchers could understand the decoded words 80 to 90% of the time. This is effectively mind reading.

More Thoughts on Gingrich
2012-01-24 02:39:00
I don’t really have the connections to be doing a full Ramble tonight.  I’m writing this on my phone. I did however want to capture a couple more thoughts about the win in South Carolina for Newt Gingrich over the weekend. The word is he’s going to be winning in Florida too. The New York Times is reporting at the moment Gingrich has something on the order of an 85 percent chance of winning. The question is surely being asked now in the halls of the GOP establishment.. Why? The question is understandable. Certainly, Gingrich is something less than the ideal candidate. He most certainly has not always been the most conservative of people. His personal life until at least recently has been something less than admirable.  On that basis I must assume that there is no hue and cry for Newt Gingrich the person to be president. I would suggest you that the reason is rather simple. At the moment, he is the only one in the Republican field it is actually sending the messa...

Look for End of Debt Supercycle: Thoughts from the U.S. Global Investors 20
2012-01-11 01:30:00
John Mauldin: Instead of doing an annual forecast, I’m going to look out about five years, which may be five times more foolish. What I want to do rather than try and figure out where the stock market is going to be at the end of 2012 or what gold is going to do, is look at the choices we have around the world. In most cases, political events don’t change the economic world all that much. It’ll probably annoy partisans on both sides, but if Clinton had lost to George Bush senior the first time, we would have still had a bull market. We were already in recovery. Yes, we would have had different Supreme Court Justices, . . . → Read More: Look for End of Debt Supercycle: Thoughts from the U.S. Global Investors 2012 Forecast
Further Thoughts on Bachmann Withdrawal
2012-01-05 04:59:00
Those who have followed this blog have observed that while Bruce and I have very different blogging styles, we (very) often have quite similar points of view, he perhaps a tad more polemical than I, I perhaps a tad more philosophical than he. Now, to be sure, he eagerly embraced Herman Cain’s candidacy while I ...
Parting Thoughts on Michele Bachmann
2012-01-04 21:34:00
Let me get this out of the way first:  I am no fan of Rep. Bachmann.  I would not vote for her and I believe her social views are out of the mainstream of American conservatism, not to mention mainstream America. HOWEVER…. she has been a steady voice of reason on the disaster of Obamacare ...
Sony PSPgo ultra portable gaming console: my thoughts
2012-01-03 21:25:00
Gaming is a beautiful passion, but it should not keep one locked in the house, so while we all demanded more portability, the manufacturers decided to obey and deliver. This way a new type of hardware has seen the light of the day: the portable gaming console. The consumer’s market abounds in variety of offer, but one product of the kind that we thought it wordy of attention is the Sony PSPgo. Stay close to us and see if it could satisfy and match your needs and expectations! Thoughts on the Valve Industry for the New Year?
2011-12-27 18:35:00
2011 has come and gone, and 2012 lies before us. The valve industry appears poised for growth, but legislative, economic, security fears, and other thunder clouds are on the horizon to potentially dampen down 2012. Thoughts on Caleb Hanie's Rather Dismal Debut

It was very clear to me that Caleb Hanie never found solid footing the entire afternoon. He never looked comfortable in the pocket and looked less comfortable when he was intentionally rolled out. Thoughts on Transgender Day of Remembrance
2011-11-20 22:28:00
Apologies for the blog hiatus. 30 Poems in November is kicking my butt. (Donate here to raise funds for literacy education.) More original content will be posted soon. Meanwhile, I would like to share these eloquent words from Natalie at the Skepchick blog about the importance of today's Transgender Day of Remembrance. Activists estimate that over 100 transgendered people are murdered each year in hate crimes. This is in addition to the other violence, discrimination, and sensationalized misrepresentation in the media that transpeople endure on a regular basis. On a more positive note, though, Massachusetts finally passed a bill to add some protections to our civil rights law for gender identity and expression. The compromise legislation now bans discrimination in employment, education, healthcare, and housing, though they were not able to get enough votes to add public accommodations to the list. Natalie's blog post explains why trans rights should matter to everyone (boldface...

The BottomLine: LSU Thoughts, Looking Ahead, and a Little Round Ball Talk

2011-07-27 01:20:00
hi everyone, this is one of my original compositions called "who let the thoughts out". guitar idol III was the inspiration for me to write this song(mhm although i don´t write, neither do i compose, i simply transcribe from my mind). it was done within two days, guitar and bass played by me, vocals, well my voice and for the drums i used toontrack´s ez drummer. the solo is completely improvised and i hope you like it. of course i don´t live in texas, those words simply left my mouth by the time i put that hat on^^ thanks for listening and hopefully you enjoy this song, cheers Bob Zabek - Who Let The Thoughts Out (GUITAR IDOL 2011- One of the 100 semifinalists)

5 Blago Verdict Thoughts
2011-06-28 15:59:00
I was going to blog on this after the verdict was read, but too many people take the approach that they need to get their thoughts out there even before they are composed.  So here are my (hopefully) composed thoughts. 1. This shows that re-trying him was the right call, especially after many of the original trial verdicts were 11-1 to convict. 2. Stream-lining the case by not trying Blago's brother was definitely the right call.  The prosecutors also seemed to do a much better job in their closing arguments with the road map they created and the simple analogies they used. 3. While I don't understand why the jurors didn't work on Fridays (we could have been done...

Final thoughts on Miami/LeBron/Dirk
2011-06-14 05:08:00
So today, I was going to get allergy tested to purchase a new dog [yes, this ties in].   For people with severe pet allergies, there is a breed of dog called the American Hairless Terrier which many find tolerable.   However, the breed is pretty rare, and to test, you basically just play with one for five hours. Well the nearest person to test with was about a three hour drive away, so I spent six hours in the car.  Three in the morning, three in the afternoon/early evening.   Over that time period, I listened to ESPN's national radio for about six hours which encompassed maybe five different shows.   Everyone was talking about LeBron and the Heat. Most of the...
Thoughts on the Latest Raids Against BIHE

The L Challenge in review: Final thoughts on the CTA system, idiosyncracies
2011-05-23 14:00:00
Editor's note: Last week I published a two-part series recounting the efforts of a British rail enthusiast to ride every CTA train line through every station as quickly as possible. Read Part 1 from Thursday and Part 2 from Friday. Today, that intrepid Brit Adham Fisher shares final thoughts on his short but many-miles-long visit. Guest post by Adham Fisher: When I run around foreign transit systems, I do try to notice some similarities and differences between them and home. From my research of the L, it seems that it can be considered almost as much a cultural icon of the city for locals as the London Underground is across the Atlantic. London takes great pride in having opened the...
The L Challenge: A Brit's thoughts on the CTA as he rides every train
2011-05-19 14:00:00
Editor's note: Following is the detailed story of a Brit who came to Chicago to ride every L rail line through every station in record time. The only problem is there is no official recorded record time. And Adham Fisher is quite accustomed to competing to break the record in London's Tube Challenge. I love his account because Adham sees things so much differently than us folks who have been in Chicago for awhile. He noticed things that only out-of-towners might - things we residents take for granted. And a special note: I has asked Adham to give more details of what routes he took, and what line he was on. But he demurred. He was afraid that someone might know...
Loose thoughts the morning after the Bulls crush the Heat
2011-05-16 12:58:00
Both teams agree on at least one thing after game one.   In the playoffs, only wins and losses count.  Scoring margin isn't really relevant to anything.   This was just one game.   The Chicago bulls are seven wins from a title, the Miami Heat are eight. In the grand scheme of things it's not so large a gap, and a game two loss flips this series back in favor of Miami.   Chicago went out and did what it sought out to do, but that doesn't amount for much if they can't win game two. What should the Bulls prepare for in game two?...

Osama Bin Laden is gone: 9/11 Thoughts from a New Yorker in Chicago
2011-05-02 17:58:00
As I'm sure you've heard by now, Osama Bin Laden is dead. To many, the events of 5/1/11 stir up a lot of memories and feelings of relief, joy, anger or sadness. I was living in Brooklyn at the time of the 9/11 attacks and the post that follows is a recount of my 9/11 experience which I wrote 5 years ago that I thought would be an interesting read today. Before I get to that I'd like to share some of the best insight I've seen on yesterday's events from Facebook: "I am not certain human beings will know world peace until we can equate justice with reconciliation instead of retaliation." -Jenn Kloc "So it took 10 years for...

I say Sugar Ray leaves tonight. Wendy has a fan base. The former boxing champ does not. He also has a partner that seems troubled this season~the once bubbly Anna seems like she is carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. She should practice a day in Maks tights...she might find life isn't so bad.

Some thoughts for tonights Horizon League semifinals
2011-03-05 23:39:00
Two quick capsule boxes for the Horizon League Semifinals from U.S. Cellular Arena.Cleveland State vs. Butler:When: 5 p.m. CTTV: ESPNU (tape delayed), ESPN3.comWhat's at stake: With a win Butler might be able to make a claim for an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament even if they were to fall to Milwaukee or Valparaiso in the finals on Tuesday. On the other hand, Cleveland State is playing for its NCAA Tournament life. A hot start has been stifled by conference losses and 0 good wins. What you need to know: Butler beat Cleveland State twice this season, 79-56 in Indianpolis and 73-61 in Cleveland. The Bulldogs are also a slight favorite today according to Ken Pomeroy (57%). According to regular season...
Slats Radke Fills In - Thoughts on the Chicago Bulls
2011-03-04 07:43:00
But what I really wanted to get to were the days at the old International Ampitheatre. That place smelled like God came down just to piss on Chicago and then rubbed in stale beer. Magnify that with the smell of the stockyards, and it used to smell like my old Grandma Stykowicz's liverwurst.
Thoughts on Randy Wells

Randy Wells is a solid, solid pitcher, as good a bet as any in the National League to give you 180 innings of 4.00 ERA baseball.
Trade deadline thoughts, a day after
2011-02-25 14:15:00
Yesterday, I discussed my mixed emotions on the Bulls lack of a move.   The right move may not have been on the table, but the predeadline comments by beat reporters about the new CBA and saving money still bring back scary thoughts for a team I hope will finally be willing to pay the luxury tax rather than finance the Chicago White Sox.  However, the Bulls weren't necessarily losers at the deadline.   The Johnson trade still helped them tremendously in terms of flexibility at draft time.   The Bulls will be almost three million under the cap and have a couple 1st round picks which should allow them to make a quality move at that time. As I noted, this...

2011-02-19 19:55:00
My entire experience with Dave Duerson is on DVD these days; a set of DVDs chronicling the 1985 Chicago Bears season the Reverend's parents had made.  I can only say that when hard times hit members of the '85 team, we all hurt a little deeper and the outpouring of emotion from his teammates is well documented in the Trib.  The 1985 Chicago Bears, for some, are the pinnacle of success for a proud franchise.  For others they are the beginning of a life-long commitment.  But for all of us, they are family.  And a family member has passed.  RIP Dave Duerson.  You'll be missed. Please, Rosenbloom.  That's Enough.I get Steve Rosenbloom's thing.  He's negative.  He's an asshole.  Writers have been...
A Fan's Thoughts on a Possible Work Stoppage
2011-02-14 19:02:00
The NFL, as it stands today, is the most successful sports league in the history of the civilization.  It laughs at the NBA, mocks NCAA everything sports in its diary and pays the NHL clean its bathroom every other weekend.  Baseball is only referred to as our "national pastime" because the people who write that phrase in newspaper and speak it on television are of a certain generation and usually a pale-like complexion.  (Ask a 40 year-old black man in one of the shitty parts of Newark, NJ if baseball is his national pastime?  Then get the hell out of the shitty part of Newark, believe me.)  You don't need to trust me on this.  When a Monday night football...
