Coaches back From the Herald Times: Hendry will have some housekeeping items to deal with this week. All of field manager Lou Piniella's coaches have been invited back for 2009, and Hendry will meet with them this week. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild is the most high-profile among the coaches, and he survived two years under Piniella, who can be hard on both pitchers and pitching coaches. The other coaches are Alan Trammell (bench), Matt Sinatro (first base), Mike Quade (third base), Gerald Perry (batting) and Lester Strode (bullpen). Ivan DeJesus is a special assistant who is in uniform before games. Say it ain't so, Gordo From the Sun-Times: In the bitter end, the difference might have been Brian Roberts, after all. Maybe he wouldn't have overcome the walks in Game 1 or the errors in Game 2, but the Cubs' woeful lack of playoff hitting comes down to two big deficiencies: First, they have no left-handed hitters whom opponents respect. If you don't believe that, ask yoursel...

Colts decide to not completely ruin my weekend I'm starting out with good news today. And the Bears won, too. From Yahoo: Headed for another early-season loss, Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts staged a stunning comeback thanks to a colossal collapse by the Houston Texans. Manning's late-game poise-and the lack of it for Houston quarterback Sage Rosenfels-helped the Colts scored 21 points in a late span of 2:10. Two touchdowns came thanks to fumbles by Rosenfels, then Indianapolis intercepted Rosenfels' last-ditch comeback attempt for a 31-27 win Sunday. On to baseball Lou thoroughly explains how the Cubs lost. There's also some mention of neither Soriano nor Ramirez showing up. From the Daily Herald. But Piniella seemed to know, or seemed to sense, that his team could be had in the playoffs. Asked after Saturday night's loss if he was shocked, he said no. So how did a team go from scoring 855 runs in the regular season to scoring 6 in three playoff games for the second...

On August 27, 1883, the volcano on the island of Krakatoa violently erupted in the most cataclysmic natural disaster in modern history.  Ships were rocked from the resulting tsunami as far away as South Africa.  The eruption sent ash 80 kilometers into the atmosphere, and created noctilucent clouds that colored sunsets around the world a deep shade of red. Upon seeing the sunset and reflecting upon his own madness and the meaninglessness of existence, Edvard Munch wrote: I was walking along a path with two friends-the sun was setting-suddenly the sky turned blood red-I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence-there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city-my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety-and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature. Sounds about right. The Pitchers But there is hope.  For the Cubs, right-handed power pitcher Rich Harden takes the mound.  Harden has been dominant sinc...

I can't say it any better than this. by Abe Frohman There are no such thing as curses. There is no bad mojo. Black cats, billy goats, foul balls . . . they mean nothing. Either you play well enough to win, or you don't. This team is capable of winning. There is absolutely enough talent in the Cubs' clubhouse to win three games in a row. I actually just did the research, and here's what I found: The Cubs won at least 3 (or more) games in a row 15 times this season. 15 times. And one of those sweeps (May 26-28) was against the Dodgers. Guess how many times the Cubs lost 3 or more to National League opponents? Twice. July 13, 18-19 (around the All-Star Break) to Giants and Astros and then that August 30-Sept 3 slide where they lost 5 in a row to the Phillies and Houston. (NOTE: Thost three games in a row against Houston was the only time this year the Cubs lost 3 in a row to the same NL team.) Conversely, the Dodgers had only eight winning streaks of 3+ games against ei...

Help us, Rich. You're our only hope. Lou is done with verbal communication From the Daily Herald: "This is not time for words anymore. This is time to go out on the field and play to the best of your ability and relax and get the job done. "That's it. It's simple. You go out there and you play the best you possibly can, and you win, and you play on Sunday. And if you don't, as long as you played a good baseball game, that's all you can expect." Unfortunately, Ryan Theriot didn't get the memo: "Our mind-set is we're down two games, and we have to win," shortstop Ryan Theriot said. No shit!? Now, back to Lou: "I've tried to downplay these playoffs where everybody says World Series and this and the other," he said, referring to the notion that the Cubs' year is a disappointment if they don't reach or win the World Series. "I've tried to downplay that. You've got to play on the field. "Forget all the talking, pep talks and conversations and everything else. You go out and ...

Carl goes to bed, Cubs don't come back From the Daily Herald: The defense let starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano down, committing 2 errors in the Dodgers' 5-run second inning, with DeRosa and first baseman Derrek Lee committing miscues. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who refused to talk after the game, committed a harmless error in the fourth. Shortstop Ryan Theriot completed the dubious cycle with an error in the ninth. "I don't think you can win 97 ballgames playing that way," Piniella said. "It wasn't good baseball. In fact, the last two days, they've probably been the two worst games we've played all year from a walking and errors standpoint. It wasn't fun to watch, I can tell you that." Soriano to nay-sayers: "You're right!" From the Daily Herald: "When I swing at strikes, I hit the ball hard," Soriano said. "When I don't hit the ball hard is when I swing at bad pitches. I want to be more selective at home plate, swing at strikes and see what happens." Soriano flied to ...

Had enough analysis about that first game yet? Doom and gloom set in for you? Convinced this series is over? Well, this is what I have to say, and this goes for the Cubs fans in a silent Wrigley Field (minus Doc and Co.) last night. The Cubs may well lose this game, and maybe even the next. But fuck all those stats, the loser of Game 1 has gone on to lose 24 of 28 series, the Cubs are 0-fer with Dick Stockton, blahblahblah. Let's just play, and see what happens. Below, I present to you tonight's starter: The Many Faces of Carlos Zambrano He can throw a no-hitter, or give up seven runs in 1.2 innings. He can hit a 462-foot home run or swing mindlessly and break his bat over his knee. He has conversations with himself, or maybe it's with someone else we can't "see." No one really knows who (or what) the Cubs are going to get tonight. A start would be not walking the pitcher (twice). Z pitched superbly last year in the playoffs, and the Cubs need the same tonight, as long as Lo...

I'm late for work, so you get seriously stunted headlines. Hope you can find something to talk about. Cubs pick up Lou's 2010 option From the Daily Herald: Lou Piniella the retiring type? Hardly. Less than a week after speculation surfaced in New York that Piniella may retire as Cubs manager if they win the World Series, the Cubs on Tuesday picked up their club option on Piniella for the 2010 season. Piniella, 65, signed a three-year, $10 million deal in the fall of 2006. The option year is worth $4 million. "When (team chairman) Crane Kenney talked about a possible extension a few weeks ago, what they were talking about was picking up the option," Piniella said. "That's what they did. I'm thankful, and I look forward to a couple more years here." Bruce Miles gets top spot because he starts his article with a Harry Caray quote From the Daily Herald: When legendary broadcaster Harry Caray sensed that the home team was in trouble, he'd bellow, "There's danger here, Cherie." The Cubs aren't in trouble. With the best record in the National League, they'll be favored to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League division series, which begins Wednesday evening at Wrigley Field. So where's the danger? But the Dodgers present danger on several fronts. Here is a look at some of those areas and how the Cubs can ward off that danger: The Manny factor: Left fielder Manny Ramirez remains one of the most dangerous hitters in the game, and he has 24 postseason home runs. When the Dodgers traded for Ramirez on July 31, they were hoping for an offensive spark. That's just what they got, as Ramirez hit 17 homers, drove in 53 and batted .396 with a .489 on-base percentage and a .743 slugging percentage in 54 games. To avoid the ...

I couldn't resist Cubs let Brewers make postseason I wonder if this is an attempt to further ruin the pitching arms of Ben Sheets and CC Sabathia. From the Daily Herald: The Cubs went with a pitcher-by-committee system, and it didn't work out badly until late in the game. Angel Guzman started and pitched 2 scoreless innings. The Cubs got an unearned run against Sabathia in the second. Cubs reliever Michael Wuertz walked in a run in the seventh. Howry gave up a one-out single to Mike Cameron in the eighth. After Ray Durham flied out, Braun crushed the first pitch over the wall in left. "No, I was just trying to hit the ball hard," Braun said when asked if he was thinking homer. "We've just got to find a way to continue to play." All in all, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said he was pleased with the overall effort of his pitchers. The Cubs finished the season with a record of 97-64, the first time the Cubs have posted a 97-win season since the 1945 pennant winners went 98-56. "Our kid...

Ted Lilly, you complete us Lilly likes mound in Milwaukee From the Daily Herald: The place was the same. Just the opponent was different. Just as he did back on Sept. 15 against the Astros at Miller Park, Ted Lilly took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday against this ballpark's rightful tenants, the Milwaukee Brewers. Lilly didn't get the no-hitter, but he got his 17th victory of the season, and a makeshift Cubs lineup knocked off the Brewers 7-3, sending the National League's wild-card race down to the final Sunday - and maybe longer. The Phillies won Saturday to clinch the NL East, but with the Mets winning in New York, both the Mets and the Brewers have 89-72 records. The Cubs will send rookie Angel Guzman to the mound today against Brewers ace CC Sabathia. Lilly was happy to play a part in tightening the race. "We want to win," he said. "We knew that. Heading into the playoffs, we need to be aggressive. We need to play hard and have that kind of mentality and aggr...

What say you, Lou? From the Daily Herald: "We're in a little bit of what you'd call a transition position right now, but we'll be fine by the time Wednesday comes along," he said. "We'll get everything back in place. We're doing the best we can, but right now, you've got to have a little patience." There were a couple of things that had Piniella concerned: ? Catcher Geovany Soto left the game in the sixth inning when he fouled off a pitch. He felt some pain in his troublesome left hand but later said he was fine and that he could play this weekend. ? The bullpen got a bit of a beating. Sean Marshall (3-5) took the loss. Jeff Samardzija gave up a single that allowed a run to score. And most worrisome for Piniella, Chad Gaudin balked and gave up a 3-run homer to Rickie Weeks in the seventh inning. "We've been trying to get Gaudin ready for postseason, and that's not coming along very well," Piniella said. And from theTrib: "We had a balk, a catcher's interference, bad baser...

HoffPOWER From the Daily Herald: The Cubs claim they still have questions heading into the playoffs. They may have found one answer Thursday night in Micah Hoffpauir. Even though the Cubs suffered a 7-6, ninth-inning loss to the New York Mets at rainy Shea Stadium, manager Lou Piniella was gushing about the performance of Hoffpauir, who may have sewn up a spot on the roster for the division series. The 28-year-old rookie went 5-for-5, including his first 2 major-league home runs. Hoffpauir also doubled home a run and singled twice, driving in 5 runs. "Impressive," said Piniella, who always perks up when a young player hits. "We're looking, we really are. We're looking for a couple spots. We're looking for a little offense. Put it this way: He'll be in the lineup tomorrow in Milwaukee." Hoffpauir was the Cubs' minor-league player of the year. But there's also a bunch of rain supposed to hit at some point because of a tropical storm that is currently passing my way down here in the South. "In the next inning, he wasn't throwing the ball nearly as well. What do I think? I give it mixed reviews. "He's healthy. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt that he needs work, that he's rusty. I wish that today were Tuesday so we could pitch him again on Sunday. But we don't have that option." Piniella then launched into a critique. "I wish he would quit fighting himself out there, just relax and pitch and have some fun. You know? He gets angry when he doesn't do what he expects to do, and it detracts from his ability. I've tried to tell him that so many times. He understands when I tell him, and I think he forgets when he pitches." Zambrano concurred with his boss. "I agree," he said. "I agree with that. Well, better now than in a couple weeks. Pretty sweet cover shot though. And fuck curses. Fuck them right in the ear, as Stan from South Park would say. As for the game, watch as the Mets try to avoid another heartbreaking collapse! Vegburger Helper's game-winning blast allowed the Brewers to keep pace last night, here's hoping that all of these teams are so exhausted in trying to make the playoffs that they just lay down for the Cubs, whoever they end up playing. Pitching tonight for the Cubs is Carlos Zambrano, who followed up his incredible no-hitter with a crappy yes-hitter (kudos to you, Sir Carl, on that line, one of your best yet). In his defense, Zambrano did just attend the funeral of his grandmother, so his focus wasn't entirely on the baseball field. Okay then Is anyone else as bored with this last week as I am? I just . . don't. . . care. I want, nay, I NEED, a break from caring. Apparently, though, we're supposed to care, because these last few games still affect who we play. We play the Dodgers if THEY win the West and Milwaukee wins the WC We play the Phils if they win the WC. We play the Metsies if they win the WC. Piniella understands the integrity issue involving the playoff races, but he has other reasons for spacing out rest for his players. Decisions have yet to be made about the playoff roster, and the starting rotation carries questions of a different sort -- such as, will Carlos Zambrano or Dempster be the Game 1 pitcher? ''I'm not making any comment as to what our rotation will be,'' Piniella said flatly. What is certain is that the starters will be shortened in each of their last regular-season turns. Cubs win From the Daily Herald: It felt good to a Cubs team that won last year's Central title after digging a huge hole for itself early in the season before furiously rallying to win the division on the final Friday of the season, only to go three-and-out to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the division series. This year, the Cubs got out in front early and stayed there. The clinching victory was No. 93 against 60 losses. "You know what I like about this year's team?" asked manager Lou Piniella after enduring numerous champagne showers. "We played ahead all year. You've got to learn to play ahead. It's not easy. Zambrano throws yes-hitter From the Trib: Cubs manager Lou Piniella had to walk a fine line Friday. On one hand, he expressed sympathy to starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano, whose grandmother died this week, forcing Zambrano to make a quick trip to Venezuela on Wednesday. He returned Thursday. On the other hand, Piniella wasn't pleased with Zambrano's comportment as he tried to remove Zambrano from the game after just 1 innings on the way to a 12-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. As Piniella neared the mound, Zambrano began to walk off, a no-no in Piniella's and most managers' worlds. "It's not the easiest thing in the world," Piniella said of Zambrano's situation. "I didn't get him in trouble out there. All I expect when I take a pitcher out of a ballgame is wait and stay on the mound, give me the baseball. No more and no less." So Z, what have you to say for yourself? For his part, Zambrano was making his first start since no-hitting the Astros on Sunday ni...

With a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and a Cincinnati victory over the Brewers this evening, the Chicago Cubs could win the division in back-to-back years for the first time in...well, ever.  It hasn't happened to the Cubs since baseball went to the division system in 1969.  Before this, the Cubs didn't win back-to-back pennants since winning it three times in a row in 1906, 1907, and 1908. Chicago Cubs: Great team, or the greatest team? From the Daily Herald: Wrigley Field, a place that had just been partying like it was 1999, suddenly was nearly void of noise. Out of the dugout popped Cubs manager Lou Piniella for a quick chat. "Lou went out there and asked Kerry what he wanted to do," Soto said. Their conversation went something like this: "I'll get three strikeouts," Wood told his skipper. "No, just get three groundballs," Piniella said. End of discussion. And three batters later, it was end of threat. And a few minutes after that it was end of game as Derrek Lee drove in pinch runner Jason Marquis with a single to center to cap a crazy day that saw the Cubs' magic number to capture the NL Central crown reduced to 2, courtesy of their 7-6 win. "The beauty of baseball is you never know what's going to happen until that final out," Piniella said. "It was a heck of a ballgame, and I can say that because we won. "It's uplifting to us and it's deflating to the oth...

The key to cutting the magic number in half is that-a-way. Harden. Bush. Too easy. Yes, I'm 8 years old. Insert (heh) your best joke below. Innuendos aside, Rich (or "the butt all the ladies and gd/carl swoon over) is making his second start since the whole discomfort thing. Against St. Louis a week ago, he gave up two runs and five hits in six innings, acknowledging his velocity was down but also saying people shouldn't put emphasis on that, as long as he's changing speeds. Hey, however you get it done. The Brewers have Bush (Revenge of the Nerds reference), who is starting on just three days rest. He's winless against the Cubs in two starts this year, getting rocked to a total of 13 combined runs. And the Brewers used 38 pitchers out of the bullpen last night, so here's hoping the Cubs get on the big green scoreboard early and often. Today's game is unfortunately on Comcast. But those who are watching in Chi-city will fill everyone in, or the cartoons on Gameday will also sh...

Cubs don't want to clinch at home From the Daily Herald: Marquis, who was coming off 3 quality starts in a row, hadn't pitched since Sept. 6, and it looked like it took him awhile to get fully with the program. So did the long layoff hurt Marquis? "I knew you were going to ask that," Piniella said to a reporter. "Look, I don't know if it did or not. But the 2 walks didn't help." Piniella was talking about back-to-back walks in the first inning that preceded a 3-run double by Prince Fielder. Marquis and Piniella more or less peacefully coexist, and that's about it. When it comes time to skip somebody in the rotation for something other than health reasons, No. 5 starter Marquis usually is the guy. "Like I say, any starter will tell you they like the routine of getting the ball every five days," Marquis said. "Sometimes outside circumstances don't allow it. You've got to deal with it. You've got to find a way to still go out there and make pitches. "It took me a few hitters t...

Pretty good time to be a Cubs fan right now. Rather than wonder when the other shoe will drop, once again I'm choosing to enjoy all this. I mean, magic number is four, the Brewers are self-imploding, Captain Cheese lost again to the Cubs last night, Veggie Burger Prince got caught looking on one of the sickest pitches I've seen this season, Z THREW A NO-HITTER, Tru Blood is awesome, House is back and the Black Keys concert is less than a month away? Yep, no complaints here. Hell, I don't even have anything bad to say about tonight's starter, Jason Marquis. He's won four of his last five decisions. Not bad for a No. 5 guy. Marquis goes up against Ben Sheets, whose time is dwindling for the Brewers. Same could be said about Milwaukee. Game is on WCIU, or for the rest of us, ESPN! Rock! Lineups a'comin.

I am looking for a supplier of a wire brush with the ends pointing to the center. We need this to clean paint from an M5 stud. Something like a cup brush with the wires pointing to the center would be ideal. Thank in advance!

Cubs get to CC, hold on late From the Daily Herald: The Cubs hit Sabathia hard early, handing the Milwaukee ace his first National League loss after 9 wins. "I think we have to feel very special because everybody knows who CC is and what he has done in the National League," Alfonso Soriano said. The Cubs scored once in the first on doubles by Soriano and Derrek Lee. It became 3-0 in the third on singles by Ryan Theriot and Lee, followed by Aramis Ramirez's line 2-run double into the left-field corner. Soriano's line drive home run to left in the seventh off Sabathia made it 4-2, and the Cubs got a big insurance run in the eighth on pinch hitter Henry Blanco's RBI single. Prince Fielder hit 2 home runs for the Brewers but struck out looking at a wicked Kerry Wood slider in the ninth inning with the tying run at third. "I don't think anybody could have hit that pitch, not after four (fastballs) at 97," Lee said. "I think I kind of got away with one there," Wood said. "It looked l...

I'm sending good thoughts of more home runs to Lee Wow things have changed in the last week.  This time last Tuesday Cubs fans were in a collective freefall, mostly because the team was in a collective freefall.  And only the less than mediocre playing of the Brewers seemed to stand in the way of the greatest meltdown in baseball history. Of course a few days off, followed by 18 innings of 1 hit baseball and you can actually feel the confidence rising.  But before we all get all high and mighty acting like we're entitled to this (which we are, but I don't really feel like becoming a Yankees fan) there are still 13 (maybe 14) games to get through, no off days and the division title is still 6 magical numbers away. Tonight starts what was supposed to be a tough stretch to end the season.  Milwaukee is in town for a 3 game series.  Yost is gone so the Cubs might have to win this one straight up, and with CC Sabathia pitching that's not easy. In fact the Br...
