Through The Looking Glass: A Future Look at the Real Estate Marketplace.
2008-06-09 15:15:00
One of the questions I hear over and over is “when will the real estate market return to normal?” There were so many newcomers investing in real estate that have no historical perspective of the market. So many things occurred that had never been seen before. People lacking in experience did not realize that this wasn?t normal. They sit on the sidelines waiting for conditions to return to the way that they were before the bubble burst. News Flash: It Ain?t Happening! It seems that during the high-flying days of the real estate boom novice investors were a lot like Alice In Wonderland. They went through the looking glass into a bizarre world of an altered reality where the normal rules of economics didn?t apply. These neophytes jumped in with both feet and paid a heavy price when reality returned to bite them. The Fallacy of Easy Money A frequent question is “when will lenders start making $0 down payment loans again?” The answer: hopefull...
McCain Through the Looking Glass
2008-05-15 21:27:00
In a speech today, John McCain will declare his new plan for Iraq.  Except it’s not a plan.  It’s new ideas.  Well, maybe not so much new ideas.  It’s a vision, a vision of Iraq 2013.  The dreamy future you can only secure by voting for J. Sidney McCain III.   By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won. Iraq is a functioning democracy, although still suffering from the lingering effects of decades of tyranny and centuries of sectarian tension. Violence still occurs, but it is spasmodic and much reduced. Okay, so most US troops are home and violence is better than it is today.  In other words, the Iraq war has been “won,” but only for certain, extremely odd, definitions of won.  Not quite the kind of accomplishment most of us might want out of the next four years.  But wait...

“Tickets, please!” said the Guard, putting his head in at the window. In a moment everybody was holding out a ticket: they were about the same size as the people, and quite seemed to fill the carriage. [. . .] All this time the Guard was looking at her, first through a telescope, then through a microscope, and then through an opera-glass. At last he said, “You’re travelling the wrong way,” and shut up the window and went away. (p. 52) Alice is sitting in a railway carriage [US: railroad car].(read more...)

2008-04-14 12:19:00
Alice never could quite make out, in thinking it over afterwards, how it was that they began: all she remembers is, that they were running hand in hand, and the Queen went so fast that it was all she could do to keep up with her: and still the Queen kept crying “Faster! Faster!” but Alice felt she could not go faster, thought she had not breath left to say so. (p. 41)(read more...)

Through the looking glass By S.R.Pathiravithana--The Sunday times One good ball a match? Does that mean you merit a place in a Test team? Back to square one. Today starts the second Test in a different surface than the one at Asgiriya, but, there are a lot of factors that must be ascertained for the good of the game in Sri Lanka. Yes, Sri Lanka won a memorable Test match which almost went to the wire, but finally by a margin of eighty eight runs. But, how they achieved it is the most intriguing aspect of it. We here in this column think that it was the game that really brought out the best in skipper Mahela Jayawardena and showed the cricketing world he is a captain who reads the run of play and then makes the decisions. On the fourth day when Sri Lanka had got their lead close to a three hundred runs with Sangakkara back in the pavilion ...

For some minutes Alice stood without speaking, looking out in all directions over the country—and a most curious country it was. There were a number of tiny little brooks running straight across it from side to side, and the ground between was divided up into squares by a number of little green hedges, that reached from brook to brook.(read more...)

The Red Queen chastises Alice, from Through the Looking-Glass And What Alic
2007-07-27 03:10:00
“Where do you come from?” said the Red Queen. “And where are you going? Look up, speak nicely, and don’t twiddle your fingers all the time.” Alice attended to all these directions, and explained, as well as she could, that she had lost her way. “I don’t know what you mean by your way,” said the Queen: “all the ways about here belong to me—but why did you come out here at all?” she added in a kinder tone. “Curtsey while you’re thinking what to say, it saves time.” Alice wondered a little at this, but she was too much in awe of the Queen to disbelieve it. 1I’ll try it when I go home,” she thought to herself, “the next time I’m a little late for dinner.”(read more...)
Alice in the Garden of Live Flowers, from Through the Looking-Glass And Wha
2007-07-17 10:01:00
Alice (of Alice in Wonderland fame) is standing in the garden, where she is astonished to notice that the flowers (which have faces) can talk: This time she came upon a large flower-bed, with a border of daisies, and a willow-tree growing in the middle. “O Tiger-lily,” said Alice, addressing herself to one that was waving gracefully about in the wind, “I wish you could talk!” “We can talk,” said the Tiger-lily: “when there’s anybody worth talking to.” Alice was so astonished that she could not speak for a minute: it quite seemed to take her breath away. At length, as the Tiger-lily only went on waving about, she spoke again, in a timid voice—almost in a whisper. “And can all the flowers talk?” “As well as you can,” said the Tiger-lily. “And a great deal louder.” “It isn’t manners for us to begin, you know,” said the Rose, “and I really was wonde...

Jabberwocky ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. ‘Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jujub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!’ He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought – So rested he by the Tumtum gree, And stood awhile in thought. And as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. ‘And has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Calloh! Callay! He chortled in his joy. ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.(read more...)
The White Knight is Sliding Down the Poker, from Through the Looking-Glass
2007-06-14 13:03:00
Alice looked on with great interest as the King took an enormous memorandum-book out of his pocket, and began writing. A sudden thought struck her, and she took hold of the end of the pencil, which came some way over his shoulder, and began writing for him. The poor King look puzzled and unhappy, and struggled with the pencil for some time without saying anything; but Alice was too strong for him, and at last he panted out, ‘My dear! I really must get a thinner pencil. I can’t manage this one a bit; it writes all manner of things that I don’t intend – ’ ‘What manner of things?’ said the Queen, looking over the book (in which Alice had put ‘The white knight is sliding down the poker. He balances very badly’) ‘That’s not a memorandum of your feelings!’(read more...)

Upon re-reading my profile and seeing the words "taking pictures", I decided to post a few of my favorite personal photographs.I prefer skewing my photographs much like I do my hand-drawn art. Meaning, I use infrared techniques, mute the colors, use varying angles, or change the palette entirely; from time to time. All photos are taken with a Canon PowerShot A70. Nothing fancy, a point and shoot more than anything, but I always enjoyed using it. Although, it is on the fritz right now. Click on the images if you want larger versions. This first one is entitled "Tree Web". I took it a few months back during a walk in the woods, and I always enjoyed looking at it.These next two shots are examples of the infrared technique I mentioned. The first is called "Heritage", and the second is entitled "Confined."Finally, I'll put up a shot that uses almost all the techniques. It's a picture of a light bulb taken from inside a light box, and I called it "Power of Light."Maybe I'll put a tutoria...
Lost: Through the Looking Glass

i.e. my thoughts on what happened on the season 3 finale, and what will happen in season 4.Recap of season finale:*the fast forward was just a dream brought on by the smoke monster (as seen in drawing) as proven by Jack's father being dead, but he refers to him in the fast forward, and in Kate not being in jail in the fast forward (she's a fugitive, if she gets off the island, she still is a fugitive!)*Ben thought the shot or the fall would re-paralize Locke*Why were Sun and Jin in the plane with Jack? (or were they?)*The commercials gave too much away, like Des shooting the cyclops in the looking glass hatch, and the three shooters on the beach not being dead*Charlie could be NOT DEAD. There might be an air bubble or something. If he is dead, that was a cheap, unmourned death, like the supporting actors that were buried alive*Why does the transmission go straight to Penny?*Maybe the flight 815 crash was all Jack's fault just like the lady on the bridge's crash ended up being al...

Bond yields are supposed to increase with the length of time until the bond matures and you get your principal back. (When I talk about bonds I’m really mean any fixed income investment: bonds, bills, notes, CDs, and so on.) A basic, maybe the basic principle of investing is the risk/reward trade-off. You have to take risk to earn a return. The corollary is also true. The more risk you take, you greater should be your expected reward (return).   The risk/return trade-off means there should be a positive relationship between the expected return and the maturity of a bond. The longer to maturity, the higher the yield. Why? Because the longer until maturity, the greater the risk. Risks include inflation reducing the value of the bond, rising interest rates, having to sell the bond at a loss prior to maturity, and, except for US Treasuries, default by the issuer.     The yield curve (return vs. maturity) should be an upwar...

I haven't been blogging (remember way back when, when blogging wasn't a verb and only compulsive Dear Diary types had one?) for a while because I've been e-commercing, a hellish process that I now have second thoughts about -- wasn't it easier just to let Paypal handle all the (insert EXPLETIVE CHAIN) details? I mean, it's ugly: merchant account, payment account, extra relationships and fees for Visa/Mastercard, way less fraud protection, interstate taxation nightmare, security fears, and a typical two-month process to get the powerful but very, very-unsuitable-out-of-the-box- shopping cart going which, incidentally, is also a favorite target of Estonian hackers or something. WTF was I thinking? Really? I think it might have been a big mistake. Big, big. Especially since I don't want to be a shopkeeper. I just want to be a marketer. There's a theme song in there. Also, Chris left my car window open meaning the electric bits were ONCE AGAIN subjected to 2.5 days of constant...

The question one needs to answer when looking for answers to what has been and will be with respect to time and space is, what is definition when measurement is not used in description. How is space and time existing with out forms of measurement. It is, so how do we participate, how do we understand, of course with our definition of time being how long it takes to get to work we may never know the meaning of being, for us measurement is the answer, pardon the interruption, but this folly of thought may lead to a road with no recovery.Copyright 2006.
