For as long as I can remember thunderstorms with all the prerequisite lightning and thunder and intense rain have preoccupied my attention and focus during their march across the sky on legs of violent light. Back in the 60's we lived atop a hill across Jones Valley from Red Mountain, which by the way was named Red Mountain because of the enormous Iron Ore Veins. It was these Iron Ore veins that seemed to attract lightning and make it so intense and lasting for the miniature eternities that I watched in wide eyed amazement. A few showers and strong to severe thunderstorms are possible later today as a weak upper level disturbance passes through the region.The high temperatures and elevated dewpoints will contribute to large levels of instability this afternoon (see image at right). Now with the help of NASA satellite data, researchers are gaining insight into the distribution of such storms around much of the world. By using data from the NASA Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite, scientists identified the regions on Earth that experience the most intense thunderstorms.
