OK, everybody in the world probably has seen this by now, but here's the "Alaska Disasta" herself giving her interview in front of turkeys being slaughtered (I thought the MSNBC captions were hilarious - h/t Atrios)......and Rachel Maddow has all of the gory details (speaking of carnage) on how the U.S. Senate fluffed "Tubes" Stevens, and also an interview with Michigan Dem Senator Debbie Stabenow about the auto industry bailout that that "august body" couldn't get around to passing (oh, and nice move to "join the party," Harry Reid)......and just for the record, here is a big reason why our discourse on helping the automakers is teh stupid (how dumb do you have to be to take Inanity, Kristol Mess and The Mittster seriously anyway?)......Everlast ("What Its Like" - guess those Alaska turkeys know a thing or two about hard times too).

As noted here, a Russian court recently reversed itself and ruled that the proceedings in the trial of three men accused in the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya should take place in secret because of jurors? safety concerns; this was a blow to Politkovskaya?s ?relatives, rights groups and journalism advocates? (the man accused of the actual shooting, Rustam Makhmudov, has fled the country, according to the story ? a backgrounder is here).Midnight tonight is the deadline for Dubya to sneak his rule changes into the Federal Register, and in the process, screw us even more than he has already (no wonder his party has numbers like this; I?m surprised they?re not lower ? h/t Atrios). So what is Dubya up to here? Well, if you must know (from here)?Among the many new regulations?or, rather, deregulations?the Administration has proposed are rules that would: make it harder for the government to limit workers? exposure to toxins, eliminate environmental review from decisions affecting ...

Dempster the next Stevie Ire? From the Trib: Well, this is really getting interesting now. Cubs manager Lou Piniella disputed Ryan Dempster's comment that the team "underestimated how prepared you have to be" entering its best-of-five playoff series against the Dodgers. "Look, the team was prepared," Piniella told WMVP-AM 1000's "Waddle and Silvy Show" on Wednesday. Though likely unintended, Dempster's statement reflected poorly on Piniella, who as manager is responsible for getting his team ready for the postseason. Piniella pointed to the lack of offense as the main culprit for the Cubs' collapse, and reiterated they need more left-handed hitting to balance the lineup. "It's very much alike, one through eight," he said. "It's right-handed, it's power-hitting and it's not very quick." Add a left-handed bat and athleticism, "and the whole thing changes," he said. While everyone has an opinion on what happened in October, Piniella said "the bottom line is we didn't play goo...

PERINO: I believe not, because I was here, I worked as the communications director for the Council on Environmental Quality, and he has long championed -- and he was the first to increase CAFE standards for SUVs and light trucks for the first time in a decade.Q Well, wasn't the basis on less, smaller fuel-efficient cars weren't as safe as SUVs and --MS. PERINO: There was a National Academy of Sciences report that said that, yes. And when you are working on CAFE standards, one of the things that you take into account is the safety of the vehicles. Lou wins Manager of the Year But we're more interested in what he had to say during the press conference. From the Daily Herald: ? On some of the changes coming for next year's team: "This is no rebuilding; we've got a good baseball team, we've just gotten cold at the wrong time two years in a row. We're going to try to do a couple of things to help ourselves out. It's a good nucleus, a good group of guys. They probably pushed a little too hard." ? On the possibility of using Kosuke Fukudome in center field next season: "We've talked about that. We need some left-handed hitting on our baseball team. (Fukudome in center) looks like something that would work for us. Fukudome is a talented kid in the outfield. From what I saw in the summer, yeah, he can play some center field." ? On whether Alfonso Soriano will again bat leadoff: "You look at our record when Alfonso led off and it was darn good. I don't know what's going to happen over the winter." ? On whether he'd prefer a ...
Throwback Thursday: Shaka Zulu
2008-11-13 02:40:00
So Im a big fan of Black Cult Classics (A cult film is a filmthat has acquired a highly devoted but relatively small group of fans). So to change things up from my usual hot-headed ranting, I give you Throwback Thursdays; reviews of some classics you might have never heard of or dont remember that are worth watching. I will also include video clips if I can dig some up or upload them. If you digg them, head over to Amazon by following my links and piick them up for the low low. So without further ado, this Thursday's selecti0on is the TV series Shaka Zulu, not to be confused with Zulu from 1964 or the remake Shaka Zulu: The Citadel (2001). This 4 part series was produced and aired on regular T.V. in 1986 and I can remember watching every single episode as a little boy. It tells the story of the rise of Shaka, a warrior prophesied to lead and unite the Zulu nation. Shaka Zulu was born in 1787 as the illegitimate son of Senzangakona, chief of the Zulu clan at that time. As a kid, hes...

THE GOOD: Following a funny, albeit somewhat predictable cameo by Oprah, the never-ending hilarity that was the Tracey versus Jenna Freaky-Friday feud and the overall brilliance (or lack-there-of) of Alec Baldwin’s Jack Donaghy (Love how his own over-medicated in-flight hallucination was responsible for confusing his assistant Jonathan with M. Night Shyamalan!), this TV Addict is ready to call it. 30 ROCK, thanks to its penchant for cramming a ridiculous amount of jokes into twenty-two minutes with a special shout out to Tina Fey’s Princess Leah impersonation to escape jury duty and Tracey Jordan’s Claw Hand (Trust me, you have to see the episode!) — is officially ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT’s heir apparent. So... we have a new President Elect. A man of principle, hope, eloquence and strength. Hubby and I (and oh so many of our friends and acquaintances) are simply ecstatic with the outcome of this amazing election and cannot wait until President Obama takes office in January.Barack Obama, I am confident, will lead our nation well. His very election has already done so much to unite us as a country. Indeed, countries all over the world closely took note - watching along with us as results came in. From England to Africa, Australia to Indonesia, people watched as Obama delivered his acceptance speech and spoke not only to the people of the United States of America but, in fact, the world. Not only do we live in a country where you can do and be anything you set your mind to, but there is hope that oppressed individuals the world over will one day be free to live up to their goals and dreams. Yes we can.On a much tinier, entirely waaaaayyy less significant note, this unification of our gl...

In case anyone's having a hard time thinking of a Christmas present for me DePaul is desperate for higher enrollment Why else would they offer an undergrad "Cubs History" course? From Cubs.com: College students interested in longtime suffering and heartache have found the perfect subject. About 25 bright young minds gather at DePaul University twice a week for an in-depth class every Chicagoan can relate to. For those scoring at home, it's course number ISP 102-709: Chicago Cubs, taught by professor Blair Banwart and assisted by Ed Pniak. "When I tell people that I'm teaching a class about the Cubs, they kind of laugh, which is understandable," said Banwart, who wears a Cubs hat to class. "You try to make it academic, as much as you can. The kids take it seriously." That's right, a class about baseball. The syllabus includes a look at the history of the club since the 1870s and its effect on the surrounding community. It is one of many freshman-level classes offered at DePaul ...

Sully nominates Santo for TV color gig I can't approve of breaking up Pat and Ron. From the Trib: Like Caray, a former radio partner, Santo is not adored by one and all, despite attaining iconic status in Chicago. He's not your classic color guy, and it's sometimes hard to tell what he's groaning about while plays are happening, at least until Pat Hughes fills in the blanks with his steady and reassuring play-by-play. But if Santo became the TV color man, the reasons for his groaning (and cheering) would be more apparent because you actually could see what he was getting so excited about. Santo, obviously, is not Stone or Brenly, the two men who redefined the role of Cubs TV analyst with honest and often blunt criticism of the players, the managerial strategy and the team itself. Fans who grew up watching Cubs games during the "happy totals" era of Jack Brickhouse valued Stone's pull-no-punches commentary in two stints covering 20 seasons between 1983-2004, and Brenly stepped i...

Dallas Green likes Lou, still hates Cubs From the Trib: Now a senior adviser to Phillies general manager Pat Gillick, Green was asked on the eve of the World Series if he felt any sympathy for his former club, which won a league-high 97 games before folding in three games in its NL Division Series. "The only guy I feel sorry for is Lou Piniella," Green replied bluntly. "I love Lou. But Chicago and I didn't leave on good terms. I thought we left Chicago in pretty good shape, and it proved out that we did. And it kind of reminds me of the [2008] Rays to a degree because when I got fired, our minor-league system really hadn't kicked in. I got fired in 1987, and in '89 they went to the World Series." Well, not exactly. The '89 Cubs only made it to the NLCS before losing 4-1 to San Francisco. But Green's point was that the fruits of his labor weren't appreciated until after his departure, when Cubs prospects like Greg Maddux, Rafael Palmeiro, Mark Grace, Joe Girardi and Shawon Dun...

Another example of putting "country first," my friends; from here......I'll see McBush "Joe The Plumber" and raise him "Joe The Laborer" for Obama (h/t Michael Morrill at Keystone Progress)......and in another great Keystone Progress video, we get a much better understanding of our country's history of racism......A Perfect Circle ("Judith," something to help us wake up).

It all started with this - we've got 19 days to go......and I think McBush came back with some lameass comment about Obama running against Dubya in response, or something......and by the way, I'm Doomsy, and I do not approve of this message (well, maybe I do - but only a bit)......K.O. with "Worst Persons" (denigrating comments by Fox Noise about Colin Powell, Billo The Clown resurrects images of Rich Lowry concerning a porn movie with a Sarah Palin lookalike, but the head of the inland empire - CA - women Republicans group take it with racist parody Obama currency)......Amy LaVere ("Killing Him" - hey now!)......and as a tribute to composer Neal Hefti, here's one of his signature themes ("The Odd Couple").
Rhetorical Questions on a Thursday Night
2008-10-17 04:39:00
Today I spent six-plus hours showing homes in Arrowhead Ranch and, frankly, there’s not a lot of energy left for a long blog post. But I sure would like to find some answers to these questions rattling around my brain: 1) If the drop in the Canadian dollar can be attributed to the fall in oil ...

Interesting ? I actually learned something from Dana Perino?s White House press briefing today (from here, at the bottom)?MS. PERINO: Mark.Q What is your response to the House -- sit down -- House Oversight -- (laughter) -- the House Oversight Committee report that accused the administration of using public funds to influence elections during the midterms in '06, accused the administration of a gross abuse of the public trust?MS. PERINO: Well, this is Congressman Waxman, who I think took a moment of -- a target of opportunity, three weeks before an election, to say, wow, there's a (sic) Office of Political Affairs at the White House. We weren't the ones that created it; that office has been here for decades. And it should come as no surprise to people that the administration seeks to promote its agenda, and we do so within the rules. That remains to be seen; this post from The Gavel (dated yesterday) provides the following details?Today, the House Oversight Committee released a dr...

This spectacular image was created by Tim at Cubby Blue. If you haven't yet visited his site, just click on the link already. And Mike Downey, that's for you. Cubs participating in fall, winter leagues It's either this or Mike Downey. From Cubs.com: The Cubs' 2008 season may be over but for young players like Tyler Colvin and Darwin Barney, there's still plenty of baseball to be played. And they're lucky enough to be able to pick Ryne Sandberg's brain a little. Colvin, the team's first-round pick in the June 2006 First-Year Player Draft, and Barney, a fourth-round selection in 2007, are among the eight players from the Cubs organization on the Mesa Solar Sox roster in the Arizona Fall League. Sandberg, the Hall of Fame second baseman who is coming off his second season as manager of the Cubs' Class A Peoria Chiefs, is the hitting coach for the Solar Sox, who play their home games at HoHoKam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz. (I also posted over here today.)Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Great Unwashed at the Palin-McBush Hate Fest in Bethlehem, PA yesterday; Michael Morrill of Keystone Progress has brass ones for bringing this to us (and though the comparison doesn't totally work I know, wasn't someone else born in Bethlehem about 2000 years ago who, when he grew to an adult, was considered by some to be a terrorist?)......another terrific Brave New Films production from Robert Greenwald, this one on the positively odious voting record John Cornyn has assembled against our veterans (and to help Rick Noriega, click here - and the wife of a certain "straight-talking maverick" delivers another slap here)......"WTF" indeed (and if you guessed this was John W. "Get Off My Lawn" McBush, then you get a free "Country First" bumper sticker, my fellow prisoners - h/t The Daily Kos)......and Al Franken has a real barnburner on his hands with Norm Coleman and the other guy, so to help him out, click here (l...

Thursday Night...Upset #6?
2008-10-09 22:58:00
In case you have been locked in a closet for the last 6 weeks, you may have not noticed that Thursday night games have been producing upsets at well a damn near 100% clip. I suppose that Clemson getting 2.5 points on the road would be considered an upset, but the reality is they were picked to contend in this division of the SEC and have managed to spank Wake previously. What I find important is that 1. Wake cant run the Ball and will probably have 2 linemen shelved for this game. (center-Ryan Britt & Guard Dennis Godfrey). #2 reason I like Clemson, is they can run the Ball (ave 166yds a game) and #3 Wake cant stop the run. This is a pretty bad combo for wake, who got torched on the ground by Navy for god sake! Spiller and Davis will have a field day which will open up the Passing game. Thursday Night Trounce Pick: Clemson +2.5 (1000pts)Peace,BDA(15-9 / 14,000pts YTD)
