"Thus," Spoke Woody Paige
2007-07-23 17:02:00 Reading a column by The Denver Post's Woody Paige is somewhat akin to listening to a William Shatner record; it sounds approximately like singing, you know that he thinks he's singing, but somehow, it's not really a song. Woody Paige's columns are indisputably composed of letters, just like other columns, and those letters do form words in the English lexicon, but something about the way they're put together makes the reader fear for his or her sanity. Of course, it's not the reader who should be afraid; it's Woody himself. Here's Mr. Paige's take on the Rockies' upcoming schedule:Thus, the preponderance of available evidence suggests that the most consequential seven-game homestand against division adversaries in the Rockies' 14(and almost two-thirds)-season history begins tonight."Thus?" The first word of your column is "thus?" A word for which the first meaning listed in the dictionary is "in the way just indicated" is the first word to appear in a column in which you ...

Ethics in Chemistry, Applications to Gender in Science? [Thus Spake Zuska]
2007-07-11 16:17:00 There’s a great review over at Adventures in Ethics and Science on a book called The Ethical Chemist: Professionalism and Ethics in Science by Jeffrey Kovac. The book takes a case study approach to teaching ethics in science. The case studies are concise but rich with possibilities, and range from situations one might encounter as a student taking chemistry classes (or dealing with professors) to issues that might face the academic scientist trying to make a discovery or the industrial chemist trying to shore up the bottom line. Each case is followed by a brief commentary that examines the central ethical questions of the case in a bit more detail and raises further issues that might be relevant in formulating a good response to the case. These commentaries don’t identify a particular response as the best response to the case (which would kind of defeat the purpose — why think through a response on your own if the commentary is going to tell you how to respond?),...
Terror alert: legal experts warn of potential pitfalls in over-enthusiastic
2007-07-10 10:00:00 Legal experts have warned that encouraging HR professionals to take more responsibility for checking and monitoring immigrants coming to work for them could "land them in trouble". Matthew Davies, employment lawyer and partner at law firm Fox Williams, told Personnel Today: "Employers are not expected to, nor should they, act as immigration officers." Davies said that keeping terrorists out of the country was the duty of the government, which has the resources and security procedures to do so. "A reasonable employer would report terrorist suspicion to the police, but encouraging the employer to take too much responsibility could land them in trouble," he said. Fox Williams warned that employers making assumptions about suspicious activity by employees risked discrimination claims. Meanwhile, an NHS insider revealed that Asian health workers were already feeling the strain of last week's media coverage. "The profile of the race and profession of those arrested has...
He’s Got Nifty Banners! [Thus Spake Zuska]
2007-07-09 21:35:00 Ah, one last announcement for the day. We have a new blogger in Scienceblogs-land. Moheb Costandi joined us July 1 and is blogging at Neurophilosophy. And apparently he has 5 different nifty rotating banners on his blog header. Ah, if only I had one ounce of creativity, and/or knew how to use the appropriate software, I could create a banner for my blog that would be more exciting than spare black printing on a white background. Which begs the question: what would a TSZ banner look like? Are you familiar with the look of the blog at the old site? I really miss those calm green leafy vine-y things. Should I just stick with the black and white? Beg someone to instruct me in the basics of banner design? Hold a banner design contest? Am I experiencing banner envy? Tell me your thoughts. Another Take on Stupid Study [Thus Spake Zuska]
2007-07-09 21:23:00 Remember that fascinating study that almost certainly applied to females? Jake at Pure Pedantry has a very interesting analysis to offer on it. I do like the way he deconstructs the statistics and delineates the difference between statistically significant and practically significant. However, he missed the boat on the gender issue. He, too, talks about eldest children, as if all children were male. This is very annoying. I would really like it if people would be clear about when they are talking about research that was done only on men and research results that apply only to men. You know, if the same study were done on 240,000 adult women, nobody would be talking about “eldest children”, I am willing to bet. Because, of course “women” does not equal “human” the way we seem to think “men” does. We don’t tend to generalize from women to men, but we are perfectly happy to generalize from men to women. Other than that,...
Friday Bookshelf - Maria Sibylla Merian [Thus Spake Zuska]
2007-07-07 01:48:00 Some time back I saw an announcement in the Chronicle of Higher Education for a new book about Maria Sibylla Merian. The book is Chrysalis: Maria Sibylla Merian and the Secrets of Metamorphosis by Kim Todd. If you’ve checked out the most recent Scientiae Carnival (and if not, why not?!?), you’ll know that Peggy at Women in Science has included it in a list of recommended reading. It looks like a great book and I’d like to add it to my ever-expanding TBR bookshelf. Scientiae Up at Amelie’s Welt [Thus Spake Zuska]
2007-07-06 01:54:00 The latest Scientiae Carnival is up at Amelie’s Welt; the topic is responsibility. In a completely irresponsible move, I missed the deadline for contributions this time around, my first time. I can point to migraines and doctor appointments and MRI scans and whatnot last week but still, I should have put something together. Well, go and read the excellent contributions of the responsible bloggers who didn’t let summer’s fine weather turn them into slackers. Jokerine’s mind map is a thing of beauty to behold, as well as instructive and thought-provoking. Amelie seems to worry that the contributions are low in number, but they are high in quality, so not to worry. You will enjoy your reading. 2007-07-05 20:43:00 With everything happening at GM - the only one of the big three who have a clear path to stability in the longer term - I find that I'm spending a lot of time blogging about GM and particularly about the G8 and Camaro. The G8 has already been announced, and I'd expect the big three magazines to have the first comprehensive tests of it in probably 2 issues from now. And of course the Camaro will be *the* big news for American car fans in late 2008 and 2009 as it finally gets rolled out - and enthusiasts are looking forward to the road test comparisons of it against the existing Mustang (which to meet the competition will get a very slight restyling in 2010) and the Challenger (prototypes are rolling now - it will apparently be out before the Camaro). These are interesting times for enthusiasts. So how do you find a particular topic in 2146 blog postings on DrivingEnthusiast.net? Blog categories are the "rolodex" of blog topics. When I write ...
Do Fundraising Numbers Suggest Lack of Enthusiasm for Hillary?
2007-07-02 04:09:00 When first I heard that Hillary Clinton’s campaign forecast that it would only be raising about $27 million for the second quarter of 2007 (April through June), I assumed the former First Lady’s people (masters of media manipulation) were lowballing its fundraising estimates so they could say, when they released the final number, that they ...

Site with RSS Feed: SuicideFood (yes, it's for Driving Enthusiasts)
2007-07-01 16:40:00 Here's a great site: Suicide Food. Yes it's for driving enthusiasts because it covers many of the best BBQ places in the world. Why BBQ? If you have to ask... a great drive involves driving outbound from town on back roads... stopping at a BBQ joint out in the middle of nowhere for lunch, then hitting the roads again and driving the 50-150 miles back home. Yes, that's what (back roads) driving is ALL ABOUT. And now a question you do have to ask: why "Suicide Food"? Because this site specializes in collecting images of animals that show they wish to be made into BBQ... and many are preparing and/or consuming them-selves! Good BBQ always deserves to be eaten. Site: http://suicidefood.blogspot.com-/ RSS feed: http://suicidefood.blogspot.com-/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss Some of the dozens of images from the site follows. TSZ is Rated R!!! [Thus Spake Zuska]
2007-06-25 21:19:00 It seems all the Science Bloggers are doing it… …submitting their blogs for rating at this site. I am so proud to say TSZ came up with an R rating. Mingle2 - Online Dating Bora has an NC-17 but he’s the only one. He’s the only one in lots of ways, though, you know?? (I mean that in a good way, Bora!) My rating was based on the presence of the following words: sex (8x) pain (3x) poop (2x) puke (1x) Now, I am absolutely sure that the word “puke” appears more than one time on this blog, so maybe I really should have an NC-17. But, whatever. I’m no “G” blogger like PZ, Doc Bushwell, Steve & Sandra, or Chad. Nor am I a mere PG-er like those Denialists Mark and Chad, or Josh fighting the good fight out in Kansas, or that respectfully insolent Orac. No, I am an “R” blogger. I’m so….proud? Ashley Likes Science! But Not Isabella [Thus Spake Zuska]
2007-06-19 22:11:00 When I lived in North Carolina, I got to know a woman who worked in one of the Research Triangle labs. She had a baby girl, and I occasionally baby-sat for her. She had named her daughter Melina, which I thought was an incredibly beautiful name for a little girl. I remarked upon this one time, and she said to me “yeah, I like it, and I figure when she’s a little older she’ll be nicknamed Mel, which isn’t too girly.” Melina’s mother did not fit any “girly” stereotypes. She had rennovated her house pretty much on her own; she didn’t dress in typical feminine garb, and she was, of course, a scientist. She wasn’t going to raise any girly-girls. She picked Melina’s name very, very carefully. According to UCLA psychology professor Albert Mehrabian, she was being a good and smart parent. Because girly-girl names mean your little girl won’t grow up to do math or science. Or so says David Figlio, professor of...
Peter Jackson, RED and sheer enthusaism
2007-06-18 16:00:00 A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of being involved with Lord of the Rings museum exhibtion that was being staged at the Powerhouse in Sydney. In the process of that a tenacious manager from the Powerhouse named Leonie Crane (who happens to be my wife) managed to do the un-imaginable that no one else thought remotely feasable... She convinced Peter Jackson to break from shooting King Kong (which was in full production swing at the time) take a week off, come to Sydney to give a big public talk and Q&A on filmmaking and LOTR.The long held key to persuading someone to do something you want them to do is simply to find what it is they Really want... What was it that Leonie found that Peter Jackson REALLY wanted? Wanted bad enough to stop shooting and fly across the Tasman sea to get? World War I Aeroplanes! And in particular aeroplane engines...! Leonie found the weakness and made Peter and offer he couldnt refuse. It just so happens that Powerhouse Museum has a huge c...

Tempering Your Enthusiasm For Minor Leaguers
2007-06-08 19:35:00 I am sure that many fantasy players are now curious about how or when they can acquire the recently drafted players, dreaming of getting next year's Tim Lincecum or Chad Cordero. I once played in a league that allowed you to pick up any player at any time as long as they were under contract. That means that in that league you could pick up David Price as soon as he signed even though he never threw a pitch. In fact what happened was that the owners would snatch up these guys as soon as they were able. Occasionally this strategy worked, but more often it blew up in their face. Even outside that league, many players put undue emphasis on picking up minor leaguers. On his BaseballHQ site, Ron Shandler wrote an excellent piece on Thursday. He made the observation, that those in mixed leagues have no reason to be following minor leaguers. This is advice that I have long followed myself and intended to write today regarding the draft until he stole my thunder. In one of my leagues this yea...
Evil Ed - The Enthusiast
2007-06-06 16:35:00 Evil Ed has been on the UK hip hop scene for a long time producing and DJing. His resume is first class and has worked with all the underground major players in UK hip hop scene. This probably is the reason why there is so many fantastic MC?s on this album. There?s a whole host of well known and less known underground UK MC?s flexing wicked lyrics on genuine hip hop beats. Ed is an expert in art of turntabilism and production and there are a variety of sounds but to me they?re all in the purists? sense of hip hop. Very funky, infectious and groovy beats that provide an excellent oral experience for those intelligent minds. There?s depth there as well. To summarize this album is a first class hip hop album with the best upcoming UK MC?s in Britain.Tracklisting1 Intro (The Enthusiast) feat Eddie Skratch2 The Ed Zone feat. Jehst3 Nico Suave feat. Home Information Pack operation delay fails to topple enthusiasm for energy
2007-06-01 13:50:00 The number of people training to become domestic energy assessors has not reduced despite communities secretary Ruth Kelly delaying the introduction of the controversial Home Information Packs (HIPs) by two months to 1 August. Kelly's announcement last month followed a judicial review by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) which said there were not enough qualified assessors ready for the June date. The communities secretary admitted that only 520 of the necessary 2,000 assessors had been fully trained and accredited. Mathew Culnane, communications executive at the National Energy Services, one of the chief trainers of domestic energy assessors for HIPs told Personnel Today: "Should HIPs be delayed, or even scrapped by the government, the implementation of Energy Performance Certificates is still required under EU Directive by 2008." Culnane said a number of trained energy assessors have vented their frustrations on having to wait for two months on industry...

Leaf Scorpionfish Taenianotus triacanthus
2007-05-11 11:37:00 This is a picture of a face of a Leaf Scorpion. You kind of have to look at it twice to see it. I do have some very nice pictures of leaf scorpions a year or more back in the blog if you care to explore the archives (linked on the right side of the page if you are on the home page). Leaf scorpions spend most of their lives just sitting around gently waving with the currents, pretty much looking like a leaf, 'til something edible happens by, then it's a matter of a very quick distending of the jaw and they've had their meal and they go back to just sitting there. These fish seem to be very attracted to antler corals, placing themselves in or under the corals, so you'll often notice the divemasters checking out every antler coral they come across for this critter and a few other things.Tuesday's night dive turned into a non-happening. My group was all snorkelers but one and when they called on Monday I'd filled them in on the relative lack of mantas and they decided to do o...

Wanted: Enthusiasm For God
2007-05-01 19:42:00 A.W. Tozer said: "To me, it has always been difficult to understand those evangelical (I would say Fundamental) Christians who insist upon living in a crisis as if no crisis existed. They say they serve the Lord, but they divide their days so as to leave plenty of time to play and loaf and enjoy the pleasures of the world as well. They are at ease while the world burns . . . If we evangelicals (Fundamentalists) had one-third the enthusiasm of some of the cults we could take a continent. We have a lazy bunch of evangelicals (Fundamentalists) on our hands." We can get enthused over a new house, new car, better job, more money, a ball game, etc., but where are those who are enthused about Jesus Christ and His work? If someone gets saved, nobody gets excited! Heaven does, but we don't! I've often said everybody is doing what he wants to do. The vast majority of believers could come to Prayer Meeting, if they wanted to. They could go one hour a week on visitation, if they wanted to. Th...
