BIBLICAL ONTOLOGY AND TIME TRAVEL

A TRANSCENDENTAL ANALYSIS OF TIME TRAVEL:WHAT REALITY MUST BE LIKE FOR TIME TRAVEL TO BE POSSIBLEBy Forrest Wayne Schultz I have been a science fiction fan for a very long time, I was the President of a local science fiction club for a while, and I have spoken at many science fiction conventions. One of my favorite kinds of science fiction is time travel stories. I do not know if time travel by means of a chrononautical device has ever happened, ever will happen, or if it is even possible for man to be able to do so. One thing I am sure of, however, is the main feature reality must have for time travel to be possible. Most theoretical discussions of time travel have focussed on the technological factors and the "paradoxes". I shall discuss neither of these here. I shall be discussing the relevant features of that branch of philosophy known as ontology, which means the most fundamental nature of things. One of the most interesting of all topics about a thing is a study of wh...

Chronotron
2008-05-09 23:07:00
If you're a fan of time travel theory you'll love Chronotron, developed by Scarybug Games. Chronotron is a platform puzzler with a really innovative (and addictive) twist. Here's the angle: you play the role of a clunky-looking robot who's apparently the pilot of a time travel machine. This "time pod" runs into trouble, sustains damage and needs to be repaired. Thus in each level, you need to snatch up one of your missing "time circuits" so your gizmo can eventually be repaired. Unfortunately for your robot, the levels are designed in a way that makes it impossible for you to collect the pieces on your own. However, since your time pod is still semi-functional, you can just go back in time to help yourself! While it's true that time travel or a "rewind" concept isn't necessarily cutting-edge anymore when it comes to casual games, the concept is refined?and executed almost to perfection?in Chronotron. First off, the controls couldn't be simpler. Move, crouch and jump with either...

Teleportation, time travel and aliens - a vision of tomorrow today
2008-04-02 04:06:00
Even the most outlandish science fiction could become fact, says professorBy James RandersonApril 2, The GuardianEinstein gave hope to scientists chasing the most outlandish theories when he famously declared: "If at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it."He then proved the existence of black holes and the notion that time passes more slowly the faster you travel. Now one of the world's most distinguished physicists has scrutinised some of science fiction's other concepts, such as teleportation and forcefields, and is convinced that they too can become reality.Professor Michio Kaku, of City University in New York, has ruled out time travel for at least a few millennia, but believes invisibility cloaks and telepathy could be possible this century."So many times predictions are made that certain things are impossible only to find them becoming possible a decade or a few decades later," he said. In his new book, The Physics of the Impossible, published in the UK ...

Einstein is the beast. This video makes it so much easier to understand time travel. I wish I could live till the day I could go into the future or back to the past. Things would have been so much fun if I were to time travel back to the past 'cause no one would know what I know. I'd be the smart-a$$ whiz in the entire universe. And imagine how much $ex could I exchange if I were to go back in time. Hmm... the world of possibility is exciting. Continue reading »
Time Travel Theory - Is Time Travel Possible?
2008-03-11 05:53:00
Is time travel possible? The problem with time travel is the 'Time Travel paradox' which goes something like this. Suppose a person travels back in time before birth and breaks a link in the time chain that led to the traveler's birth. This problem has been commonly explored by asking the question 'What if you killed your own grandmother before she first conceived?' (Why the time travel paradox is never expressed in terms of killing your own mother, I am not sure, but it isn't). If you kill your grandmother then you would not be born. If you were not born, then you could not travel into the past, in which case you would not kill your grandmother. If you did not travel back in time to kill your grandmother, you would be born causing you to again travel into the past to kill your grandmother...with me so far?The laws of physics seem to allow the possibility of time travel to take place. Many physicists believe that there would have to be some kind of constraint that would make t...

Time Travel Is Comming Closer to Reality
2008-03-02 16:33:00
At a UCLA workshop attended by an assortment of future-thinkers, the late physicist Dr. Robert Forward told the group that further understanding of general relativity and quantum mechanics would one day enable humans to travel backwards and forwards through time. ?Given the money and the mandate,? Forward said, ?a time machine will be built.?This workshop convened in 1983, and today, 24 years later, scientists are bringing this bold concept closer to reality. Professor Amos Ori at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology recently created a theoretical model of a time machine based on Einstein?s theory of relativity, which would allow people to travel back in time.Ori?s theory, published in the prestigious science journal Physical Review, describes how a future time machine could be built by forming ?closed time-like curves? in a donut-shaped area of space-time. A person traveling around this donut loop would go further back in time with each lap.Although the laws of physics permit t...
Lost 4.5: Desmond 1 and Desmond 2: The Exquisite Loops of Time Travel
2008-02-29 04:42:00
Time travel is a wonderful, exquisite, exasperating, paradoxical thing. It tugs at the very edges of our understanding. It is shimmering and fragile, and yet somehow embodies the most profoundly imaginable possibilities in the cosmos. It is exceedingly hard to do well - to tell a time travel story that doesn't flinch from the paradoxes, that embraces them, yet still tells us a story we can (mostly) understand.Journeyman on NBC last year rose to the occasion once, in its splendid episode before the finale. Journeyman was a time travel series.Lost was never really about time travel. But its Desmond story - a man who sees the future - certainly could have been a time travel story. I wrote in my reviews here last year that time travel might well explain what was going on with Desmond, and those he touched.Tonight, in Episode 5, Lost took that path - or, actually, made good that path which it had already been on its way to building, from the time Desmond unaccountably ran into Jack ...
Time Travel
2008-02-28 06:05:00
If you could travel in time, would you? Would you go back, to be with someone who is no longer here? Or maybe go back to relive your childhood, either because it was pleasant, or because you wanted to change something? Perhaps you would like to travel into the future, so as to see what's going to happen, in order to prepare for it. Of course, we'd all like to go just far enough ahead to see the winning lottery numbers before we select ours! But haven't you heard about the danger in messing with the fabric of the space-time continuum? If you've never had a discussion about that, then you haven't hung around such geeky people as I have.  The Essay (via Dark Roasted Blend) You'll enjoy at least some of these Photoshopped anachronisms. Eva complains about her difficult high school years saying she was bullied for being ugly. Can you believe it ugly?? She doesn?t look ugly on her old photos!!Can you believe her nickname was "ugly duckling"??Eva Longoria was at ?Over her Dead Body? premiere in LA when she made more revelations about her childhood: "I was the darkest one of my family. I was the only one with black hair and the only one with dark skin. All my sisters were light blondes with hazel eyes. They used to call me ugly duckling.?Ugly duckling is departed; Eva is a stunning woman and the sexiest Desperate Housewife but she says she never depended on her looks? well not until now?"I grew up without being beautiful so I kind of relied on my personality and my character. I kind of developed a skill not to depend on anything superficial because I didn't have anything superficial to depend on." ? Retrospect: New time travel story in this months FSF
2008-01-05 22:40:00
Wanted to post a quick note about an excellent and somewhat haunting story in the February edition of Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine.  Ann Miller’s Retrospect was a real eye opener, especially for book lovers like me.The story centers around this question:If you could give a book, anybook, to someone who had lived before, what book would youchoose and to whom would you give it?A little bit haunting, and with a surprising (and funny) twist, it is well worth taking a look at.  You can pick it up and bookstores now, or get a downloadable version of the magazine at http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/

The Time-Travel Blind and Journeyman: My Response to TV Guide's Adam Schuba
2007-12-27 02:53:00
Journeyman was included in TV Guide's Worst TV of 2007. Writes TV Guide's Adam Schubak, "The major problem with this show is not so much the time traveling as it is the two completely unnecessary love triangles . . . . Week after week, the show spends half the episode dealing with the family drama while the rest is spent in the past trying to help random strangers whose fate has them going on to do something great in the future."Wow, talk about clueless. The great strength of Journeyman is its powerful mix of family/love triangles on the one hand, and the societal issues on the other, and this mix was brought to a near-perfect pitch in the last two episodes. But beyond the fact that Schubak just didn't get Journeyman - and was by no means alone among TV critics - I think there is a more serious, and therefore more interesting, factor at work here.I realized a long time ago, when I was just a kid, and I'd spend hours holed away reading science fiction, and my mother would chide ...

Journeyman Continues: 12: The Perfect Time Travel Story//Contest Winner!
2007-12-18 05:16:00
Tonight's Episode 12 of Journeyman was one of the best hours of time travel ever on television. I expect it will become a classic-But first, we have a new winner for tonight's contest. Like last week, I was emailed the correct answer for Dan's last word in tonight's episode within a minute of it being said-No, I'll get back with the name of the winner, and some consolation prizes, at the end of this review...Let's talk about this splendid show, first:We had a perfect time travel story on Journeyman tonight, and I predict it will become an all-time travel television classic, along with "City on the Edge of Forever" in Star Trek: The Original Series and "Yesterday's Enterprise" in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and that's about it.Even the beginning was perfect: Dan goes eight years back in time to save a mother and son, sitting in the front of an RV, perched half over a cliff. Dan's sheer weight, when he materializes at the back of the vehicle, prevents it from tipping ov...

Time travel: 1979
2007-10-01 18:12:00
As summer approached in 1979, we moved out of the house where I had spent all of my life into a new one, in the same suburb. It was a great house. It's top two floors had been bombed off in World Way 2. My brother and I were given a spacious room each in the cellar, which had been renovated accordingly. It was brilliant. Privacy! Next door lived a Lutheran pastor with two wholesome blonde boys (one of them whom was briefly in my class at school) with Danish names. I don't think that Pastor wanted his little angels hanging with us ruffians, so in three years living next door to Flanders, we never even talked with Rod and Todd. But my life was not rendered incomplete by the snub. Teenage depression, on the other hand, together with low self-esteem and unresolved issues following my father's death two years earlier, were a blight in my life. As ever, music and football were my refuge.Chic - Le Freak.mp3In the wake of Saturday Night Fever, disco became a dirty word. Yet, disco was ne...
Time travel: 1978
2007-09-27 17:16:00
By 1978 I was one messed-up kid. The only thing that kept me happy was music and football. I spent prodigious amounts of money on records, financed largely by the largesse of my dear grandmother and chance discoveries of cash in places I had no reason to explore (theft is such an ugly word). Needless to say, I did get caught for my creative means of funding my rapidly growing record collection. The punishment, other than a generous dose of corporal discipline, was confiscation of said collection. So for a while -- it might have been weeks, but felt like months -- I depended on taping music from the radio more than I did before. I had also discovered the joys of '50s rock 'n roll (Gene Vincent was my favourite of that lot) and '60s music. In late 1977 I had become a Beatles fan after listening to side 3 of the red album; "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" made me fall in love with the so-called Fab Four, and it remains my favourite Beatles song. As for contemporary music, punk h...
