Mailbag: Top Prospect Arrival Times
2009-11-05 23:37:00 Thanks to commenter VerizonWireless, we have our first mailbag since moving over to ChicagoNow. If you have a question about Cubs prospects or anything baseball related for us, you are encouraged to shoot it over to us here at mailbag@wrigleybound.com, and we'll answer every good question we get. Now onto our question. Is there anyway you could preview some of the top prospects ETA's?- VerizonWirelessAbsolutely. I posted my top 30 prospect list last week, so let's look at those guys and make predictions on their arrivals. I'll assume that every player avoids injuries and progresses well, obviously ridiculous assumptions as many of these guys will struggle somewhere along the way and won't ever get a shot in the majors. Some...
NY Times Endorses SuperSecret Huberman Violence Plan
2009-11-05 16:08:00 The Times editorial page today comes out strongly Huberman's youth violence prevention plan (A Powerful Idea on Youth Violence), thrilling over Huberman's beat cop cred and way with a spreadsheet and calling his plan new and ambitious. If only most of the ideas in the Huberman plan hadn't already been tried, and if only Huberman wasn't keeping everything but a simplified PowerPoint version of his analysis and his plan under wraps. I'd love for the plan to work, but unlike the Times editorial page I'd need to see it first. Huberman's quickly developing an unfortunate reputation for being super secretive. Not just regular secretive. Cheney secretive. He's Chicago's SuperSecret Schools CEO....

Onk Bak Fans - Check out Interview from NY Times
2009-10-25 17:10:00 Tony Jaa might be the world's biggest action star you haven't heard of. The 33-year-old Thai martial-arts master garnered international acclaim thanks to his starring role in 2003's Ong Bak, a freewheeling romp about a villager who travels to Bangkok to retrieve a stolen statue -- with violent results. The film took two years to reach the States, but Jaa's balletic movements and wirework-free stunts made him an instant cult figure. Now comes Ong Bak 2, Jaa's directorial debut. (He shared duties with his fight choreographer, Panna Rittikrai.) For his first time behind the camera, Jaa demonstrates no lack of ambition, jettisoning the original film's giddy spirit for a brooding, more emotionally layered fifteenth-century tale of revenge, romance, and Buddhist philosophy. Currently...

2 Sun-Times investors are headline-makers
2009-10-16 19:36:00 Add businessmen Kevin Flynn and William Parrillo Sr. to the list of names who have ponied up as much as $5 million each to invest in the rebirth of the Chicago Sun-Times. They are part of a team led by Mesirow Financial CEO James Tyree to join in purchasing the newspaper company that's been in bankruptcy for much of the year. Liquor distributor and hockey-team owner Rocky Wirtz and landfill owner Edward Heil also put cash toward the yet-to-be-finalized sale of Sun-Times Media Group Inc....
Hard Times & Economic crises
2009-10-12 04:26:00 All over the globe, people are facing difficult times. Economic crises, war and now, natural calamities coming left and right. In Asia alone there has been a continuous occurrence of earthquakes, typhoons and tidal waves and I'm sure all of you can feel the difficulty of selling. Its obvious that because of these harsh calamities people are having second thoughts in purchasing properties. The hard job of real-estate brokers has become even harder. read more

An EDGY Man for EDGY Times
2009-10-07 15:06:00 I'm up to the task. I'm ready. So what am I rambling on about today you ask?Yesterday the IHSA announced that longtime assistant executive director and football czar Dave Gannaway is retiring at the end of the 2009-10 school year. IHSA Press ReleaseSo now that the IHSA looks to have an opening for a new Czar of Football, I'm ready for the task.Yes, I would like to be considered as the next Czar of Football for the state association.Ok, stop laughing. I mean it.So if this was a political race (and let's face it, what state association job isn't a political deal) I would need to present my platform. So for your consideration, here is my "platform" that I will run for the...
Times Internet Becomes an ICANN Accredited Domain Registrar
2009-09-23 19:35:00 Times Internet has announced that it has acquired ICANN accreditation as a domain registrar. With this Times Internet Ltd. can directly offer domain registration services to their customers without having to resell other accredited registrars’ systems. This essentially means Time Internet costs of registering a domain on behalf of a registrant would come down. The move doesn’t seem the best idea, and actually doesn’t have much impact anywhere because domains are a low margin business. Most registrars worldwide run on margins as small as a few cents and some even offer domains at a loss as a bait to sell other web services with better margins. And this is reflected in the prices Times Internet has listed on the website – domains.indiatimes.com. It is comparatively higher than Net4, Rediff, Directi, etc. What exactly is the value therefore that Times Internet adds with this accreditation is not entirely evident. Again, this accreditation is only for Generic TLDs...

Laurence Deyton: Teen Smokers Favor Flavored Tobacco 3 Times More
2009-09-23 14:30:00 Damian O'Hara-- Today the FDA fired its first shot across the bows of the tobacco companies by banning all flavored tobacco products with the exception of menthol.Quoting from an 'historic' internal tobacco company memo which plainly states plans to directly target children, Dr. Laurence Deyton of the FDA said that teen smokers are three times more likely than adult smokers to favor flavored tobacco products. I wonder whether they'll ban those disgusting tobacco-flavored cigarettes?!Whether you are smoking TwistaLime, Strawberry, Vanilla, Winter Mocha Mint or Marlboro Light, you can quit easily using Allen Carr's simple, drug-free Easyway method. Oscar-winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins quit many years ago using Allen Carr's Easyway method. He became such a fan that he offered to provide a voice-over for the introduction to Allen's first video. He describes the method perfectly: "Being a smoker is like being trapped in a complicated maze. You want to get out, but you don...

Why the Sun-Times deserves to live.
2009-09-22 04:38:00 Fellow ChicagoNow blogger Mike Doyle says the Chicago Sun-Times deserves to die. Here's one reason it deserves to live: A superb reporting and writing job by Sun-Times political writer Abdon M. Pallasch on the slating of state and county judges. No, I'm not saying that newspapers are the only place you can find this kind of excellence, but I'm not supplied with enough hubris to declare that newspapers merit death....

Signing in These Times
2009-09-19 07:25:00 This week a colleague of mine, knowing I was going to be out at Kettler all week, informed me of her intention of swinging by the rink and grabbing an Alexander Ovechkin signature on an authentic Caps' sweater she'd recently purchased for her significant other. Over the course of some email exchanges I attempted to explain to her why this wasn't so easily done, and how it really had nothing to do with any ingratitude or dismissiveness Ovi harbored for Capitals' fans. Many, many Capitals' players meander over to the daily congregation of fans at Kettler at the end of practice, every day, and patiently sign and pose for pictures. Hockey players, I'd argue, are as good about this engagement with fans as any athletes. Bobby Hull, for instance, often incurred the wrath of his Blackhawks' teammates for the extent to which he'd make the team bus idle in frigid environs while he signed. AO maintains this tradition, but the demands placed upon truly elite professional athletes today ...

Charlie Trotter: Bubbly times ahead
2009-09-16 16:13:00 Where Ben Bernanke saw 'green shoots,' Charlie Trotter sees tiny bubbles. Trotter, the superstar chef whose Lincoln Park eatery saw sales fall 20% in the recession, says the worst is over and diners are starting to spend money again. Sale won't stanch Sun-Times' losses
2009-09-08 16:00:00 James Tyree could keep the ink flowing at battered Sun-Times Media Group Inc. Turning it from red to black will be harder. Mr. Tyree, chairman of Chicago's Mesirow Financial Holdings Inc., leads a group of investors in advanced talks to buy the Chicago newspaper company out of bankruptcy. But he would face two huge challenges that other struggling newspapers do not: Sun-Times is losing money on its operations, and its flagship paper is the No. 2 player in town at a time when many observers question whether even one daily paper can survive in most cities.Find out what Mr. Tyree needs to do to turn things around. ...
Times Have Changed. Or Have They??
2009-09-06 17:39:00 I grew up in the country where there were many more animals per square mile than people. There were no cell phones, no internet, and certainly no malls or McDonalds dotting every corner. Essentially, there was no instant gratification. During summers, especially, we kids had to learn to be resourceful if we wanted to get together and have fun. Otherwise the specter of boredom loomed large. I’ve always lived near and loved the water. So, of course, one of the first things I bought myself when I’d saved enough money was this. Granted, she was used and had seen better days… But she still had a lot of sea-worthy miles left on her. I practically lived on that thing during the summers. And there were always plenty of willing friends only too happy to play first mate. Over the years, I’d taught many a friend the finer points of sailing. But wait… that’s not me! Who are these kids zipping back to shore? Could it be…? Like mother, like daughte...

St. Pete Times drops the ball when covering Channel 8 protest
2009-07-16 21:48:00 When Alexandra Zayas, from The St. Petersburg Times, called to talk about the Channel 8 protests, I couldn’t have been happier. Intelligent, friendly, compassionate – Zayas understood the topic and had done the research. She was covering the protest and surrounding story, gathering opposing points of view from friend and foe alike. Hers would be a well-rounded story. I could just tell. So I was happy to contribute a verse. But then the editors at the Times dropped the ball. They reassigned Alex and gave her story to Ileana Morales, whose account of the protest is half-assed. I’m not blaming Morales. She was probably working on a tight deadline with a word-limit more appropriate for elementary school book reports. The blame lies with The St. Petersburg Times. When they give more space to stories like this one about a horror film, one can’t help but wonder why an important media event like the Channel 8 protests got barely 260 words. Unlike this video, their ...
Sun-Times Reports City 'Booting Blitz'
2009-07-15 21:59:00 According to a report in today's Chicago Sun-Times, since the two ticket booting threshold went into effect, booting has increased dramatically. The Sun-Times says the city has issued 183,293 seizure notices and booted 3,493 vehicles since April. Unfortunately, it's hard to say if this claim is accurate as the newspaper does not provide any comparative numbers from last year to see if this is true. While it stands to reason that booting is up, and I was just noticing the last few days what seems to be an increased number of boots on the street, one cannot say without previous years' numbers. Don't worry, the brain addled Geek is looking into it....
