An Ode to Todd Helton
2007-10-18 06:48:00 It’s rare that you catch an athlete saying what he’s actually thinking. I had the pleasure of covering last March’s Atlantic 10 tournament, and even the 19-year old kids from schools smaller schools like Richmond and Fordham only spewed forth the standard soundbites about defense and playing hard that they knew the media wanted. I’m not criticizing them—if I was in their shoes I would have done the same thing so that I could get back to being with my teammates—but that’s the reason why Todd Helton’s post-game interviews have been the most refreshing thing about this year’s playoffs. From the “I don’t know how we just won that game” remarks after the Rockies clinched the Wild Card, to the game 4 NLCS interview in which a dazed Helton kept repeating “This is unbelievable”, the Rockies first baseman has showed a degree of bewilderment, honesty, and authenticity that you never see from professional ath...

Christmas in Rock-tober - Rockies World Series Bound [Dan Lucero]
2007-10-16 15:13:00 From Guest blogger, Dan Lucero of Up in the Rockies: ?The art of fiction is dead. Reality has strangled invention. Only the utterly impossible, the inexpressibly fantastic, can ever be plausible again.? ? Red Smith From my seat in Section 303 at Coors Field, the play seemed to go in slow motion. Eric Byrnes checked his swing and the ball bounced to the left side of the infield. Jamey Carroll couldn?t get to it, but of course Troy Tulowitzki could. The kid gets to everything. The throw wasn?t a typical Tulo lazer, but it had plenty of steam considering Tulo was going away from first base when he cut it loose. Byrnes dove headlong for the first base bag, but the throw beat him. Todd Helton gloved it, and let out a roar that was overpowered by the roar of 50,000 other purple-clad maniacs. The rest is a blur. Towels were waved. Brooms were thrust skyward. Fireworks filled the sky. I hugged my brother first, then started high-fiving and hugging total strangers. I did not truly know the m...

NLCS: The Improbable Match-up [J. Mark English]
2007-10-11 19:40:00 As of yesterday there was something like 8,000 tickets available to the D'backs vs. Rockies NLCS. It just shows how little interest there is in this bout. It also is an indication of just how low the expectations were for both of these ball clubs. The Diamondbacks are probably less of the surprise team here. They have solid pitching, and gutsy hitting...the same kind of combo that helped the Cardinals win the World Series last year. They are a scrappy team. The Rockies may be the beneficiaries of an off season discovery. Before the season, the Rockies ground crew realized that the baseballs in the high altitude would dry out, causing great lift in the ball. Combine this with the light air, and you have a ball that will travel a lot farther then at any other ball park. They decided to humidify the balls up until game day, keeping them nice and moist by the first pitch. The added density helped keep the ball in the park more often then not, and finally the Rockies were able t...

Boo Mark Teixeira Hurray Todd Helton!
2007-06-22 00:35:00 Ken Rosenthal had a long column about the Yankees and Rangers working on a trade involving Mark Teixeira. Teixeira, a power hitting first baseman obviously would be a great fit in NY. He would probably bat 5th and provide better protection for A-Rod than Matsui can. However? The Yanks are

Does Todd Helton Coming to the Red Sox Make Sense?
2007-01-31 08:17:01 To answer the question in this post's subject, yes. This makes perfect sense. Todd Helton is an ideal fit for the Boston Red Sox. He fits the mold as far as the Red Sox philosophies go when it comes to OBP and plate patience. On top of that the guy has a career .333 BA, and a career .430 OBP. Helton would be a double machine in Fenway Park (much like Lowell last year) and his power numbers, inserted in the Red Sox potent lineup, would rise from the slip he's seen the past two seasons. If all this takes is Lowell, Tavarez, and Hansen then I say we go for it. "Giving up" on younger pitchers is a tough thing to do, but here's where this deal just makes sense to me. Craig Hansen may help the Red Sox get to the postseason and win, Todd Helton will help the Red Sox get to the postseason and win. Hansen has a lot of potential, but would you rather have a potential or proven ballplayer? The deal he currently has is a lot of money, $90.1 million over 5 years, but if Color...

Todd Helton Staying In Colorado
2007-01-30 14:38:02 The talks between the Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox involving Todd Helton are officially dead. The reason, the Red Sox will not give up Manny Delcarmen or Craig Hansen along with Mike Lowell and Julian Tavarez. This reluctance caused the Rockies to pull out of negotiations. The Sox would have been willing to give up one of the prospects had Colorado “shown them the money.” A source close to the Red Sox front office said that the Rockies offer of paying upwards of $40 million dollars wasn’t “anywhere near as much as is being reported.? Rockies Owner Charlie Monfret had this to say: “This is not a trade that we were anxious to complete, but we are always exploring ways to improve our team. Discussions like these regarding a player of Todd’s talent and character are never easy, and it’s not surprising we were not able to reach an agreement. Todd has been and will continue to be an important part of our franchise, and we can’t w...
