Braves? Tom Glavine leaves start against Nationals in 1st inning (AP)
2008-04-13 21:18:00
Atlanta Braves left-hander Tom Glavine left his start against the Washington Nationals with an apparent injury after failing to record an out in the first inning Sunday. The first four batters Glavine faced reached base, on three hits and a walk, as Washington took a 1-0 lead. After throwing his 16th pitch, to get to ...
Tom Glavine is a Better Person Than You Are
2008-04-06 12:29:00
In an interview Friday night with Kevin Burkhart of SNY, Tom Glavine said he was not devastated following his pathetic display of pitching; his last performance in a Mets uniform, on that fateful Sunday afternoon because he and his wife have seen devastation first hand from the charity they run for children with cancer. He said he understands the way people feel but he has a certain perspective on things at this stage in his life with kids and all.Uh, thank you Tom. Thank you for your profound explanation, because we Mets Lifers really misunderstood you when you said you were not devastated. But now that you have so eloquently pointed out that there are more important things in life than winning baseball games (going out on limb here, but I believe that’s what you’re trying to say), we feel a heck of a lot better now. Please excuse us for feeling ‘devastated’ after our beloved team just completed the second greatest collapse in regular season history, which you contributed s...

Tom Glavine won’t have to wait long for his first look at the New York Mets. The Atlanta Braves open a three-game series against the Mets on Friday, and Glavine, who spent the last five years in New York, will pitch the second game on Saturday. “It’s the kind of thing I knew obviously would ...

Mets pitcher Tom Glavine declines $13 million option for 2008, wanting time
2007-10-06 00:05:00
Mets pitcher Tom Glavine declined his $13 million option with New York on Friday, making himself eligible for free agency. The 41-year-old lefty, who got his 300th win this year, gets a $3 million buyout in addition to his $7.5 million salary this year. “Tom has not had enough time to sufficiently think things through ...
Baseball News From Yesterday - Tom Glavine
2007-10-04 13:40:00
The Met's Tom Glavine announced that he is likely to be a former Met at week's end when he declines his option to stay with the team that he couldn't make competitive in their do-or-die game last Sunday.  He mentioned going home to Atlanta. This would make sense for the Braves as Glavine is likely to represent one of the better option available to bolster a weak Atlanta rotation.  A starting four of Tim Hudson, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Chuck james would be as strong as any top four.  This assumes that the shoulder issues that derailed James in the last two months of the season are not serious. The question is how many years does Glavine want.  As a strong "union" man, he will undertstand the importance of getting more than a one-year-I-want-to-be-happy contract from Atlanta. More On Tom Glavine
2007-10-03 21:31:00
Let's catch up on what's been going on with Tom Glavine. SI.com's Jack Wilkinson quotes Glavine as saying he'll "most likely" decline his $9MM player option for 2008.  This is confusing, because as far as I can tell Glavine's player option reached $13MM when he hit 200 innings.  While I can see Glavine passing on $9MM, $13MM would be hard to top on the open market. Also, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick suggests (Insider required) that Glavine's close relationship with Nationals president Stan Kasten could compel Washington to sign him to a one-year deal to anchor the young staff.  This seems like informed speculation to me, if that makes sense. My own thought: it would be nice to see Glavine take around $5MM to pitch for the Braves one last time.  Seems that discounts these days ain't what they used to be.  Besides Tim Wakefield, I can't think of a guy who basically flipped off the Player's Union to stay where he wanted to.
The Tom Glavine Situation
2007-10-02 02:42:00
No less than four articles surfaced today about Tom Glavine.  There was Bob Klapisch on the harsh end, and George Vecsey on the calm side.  A guy who's been living on the edges for years, outpitching his peripherals, had a lousy final month to his season.  And of course his final thrashing at the hands of the Marlins could not have come at a worse time. But does this really change anything?  Glavine still has to decide between retirement and playing.  Then he might have to decide between the Mets and Braves.  Omar Minaya is still waiting on Glavine's decision and will leave the door open to him for $10-12MM.  The Braves have the need but still probably don't have the money.  Chris Solberg weighs in on the Atlanta idea over at The Baseball Opinion.  Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog thinks Glavine's time in New York is up. Perhaps these older hurlers will start to gravitate towards the Roger Clemens abbreviated season plan.  Guys like G...
NY Mets - Tom Glavine
2007-10-01 16:41:00
As much as I don't care for the NY teams, I feel bad for Tom Glavine for pitching one of his worst games when his team needed him the most. Glavine was hammered for 7 runs in the first inning of a 8-1 loss to the Florida Marlins. Glavine is a ultimate competitor and a solid personality. So, how did all come down to just one game - Mets had a 7 game lead over their division rival Phillies, 20 days ago, and lost 6 of their last 7 games, all of them at home. Now its all gone, the Phillies are in and the Mets are out. So what does this tell you..it ain't over until it's over.
This is Tom Glavine
2007-10-01 14:58:00
Here's a quote from Tom Glavine after yesterday's game:“I’m not devastated. I’m disappointed, but devastation is for much greater things in life. I’m disappointed, obviously, in the way I wanted to pitch. I can’t say there is much more I would have done differently.”Breakout the pitchforks, I'm gathering a hunting party and we won't stop until we find Glavine. Can you believe this? Even if this is what you think, you don't say that to the New York media after you single-handedly ruined the lives of every Mets fan on the planet.Bryan and I have talked repeatedly about how Glavine was a guy you never truly accepted as a true Met. But this year he had me fooled. I started thinking this guy was coming around. Nope.He wanted to go to Atlanta after last year, but they didn't want him. He came to the Mets for the money, but always wished he stayed with the Braves. But guess what will be more memorable for Mets fans, Glavine winning his 300th game as a Met or what he did on ...
Tom Glavine wins No. 301 as New York Mets beat Washington Nationals 6-2 (AP
2007-08-18 05:22:00
Facing a franchise he has beaten more than any other, Tom Glavine picked up win No. 301 by allowing one run over seven innings Friday night in a 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. Glavine (11-6) beat the former Montreal Expos for the 33rd time, including the sixth time since the team moved to the ...
Mets Lack Vampire's Mentality
2007-08-18 03:19:00
Stephen A. Smith, the notoriously loudmouthed ESPN broadcaster, has a job at the Philadelphia Inquirer as a general sports columnist. That means he has to comment on multiple sports, which of course forces him to occasionally write about baseball, much to the dismay of baseball fans everywhere. Today, wise baseball fan that he is, Stephen A. has broken down the Mets' struggles in his latest column.Take a trip north to New York, hear the rumblings out of Shea Stadium, and you'll learn all is not well with the team there.I have heard these rumblings, but alas, I need Stephen A. to truly break it down for me.One pitcher in New York, John Maine, has been a shell of himself since the all-star break, going 3-3 with a 6.31 ERA in seven starts. He starts off on the right foot, with a fair criticism of Maine.Another, Oliver Perez (3-2, 4.33), hasn't been much better. Now, he begins to slip a little bit. Apparently, Oliver Perez "hasn't been much better" despite the number that Stephen hims...
Milestone Overdose? [J. Mark English]
2007-08-07 04:12:00
Baseball fans who are annoyed, disturbed, and flat out angry at Bonds might hang their hats on the feats of Tom Glavine and Alex Rodriguez this past weekend.Saturday night I went to a Dave Matthews Band concert up in Hartford, and wound up drinking with some close buddies at a bar in New Haven afterwards. The TV's were showing replays of A-Rod's 500th home run. After showing his HR from just about every angle, they squeezed in a replay of Bonds smacking HR number 755. It was almost as if ESPN considered Bonds an after thought compared to what A-Rod had done. Then last night, a deflated friend and I viewed Tom Glavine win his 300th game. Barely any mention of Barry Bonds during the telecast. How lucky are we to have these three stars align themselves for their milestones at the same time? Barry Bonds somehow, despite tying the most "hallowed" record in all of sports, had to share his spotlight. There is a sweet irony in all of this. The majority of fans who loathe Barry Bonds ...
Turn down the volume --
2007-08-06 23:35:00
In a weekend unlike one we've seen in sports, baseball, amid all the controversy, was at the forefront as Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Tom Glavine further etched their names into history. The significance of this past weekend is lost as these events unfortunately came during what can be argued as the worst year in sports history. Among the steroid controversy in Baseball, the gambling allegations in the NBA, and the criminal activity in the NFL just to name a few, 2007 will always be remembered a year were the major stories in each sport didn?t take place on the field, but off of it. That?s just the way sports are today. With every ESPN time out to carry Barry?s at-bat live, the steroid allegations were spoken about more than the record he was chasing. With every ARod at-bat you?d hear how he?s pressing, and can?t take the pressure. And with every Glavine start you?d hear about how the game has changed and about failed opportunities. But take a moment and think a...
Tom Glavine, Baseball's Last 300 Game Winner? [David Stefanini]
2007-08-06 16:35:00
On Sunday, Tom Glavine became the 23rd player in Major League Baseball history to win 300 career games; and only the 5th lefty to do so. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing just 2 runs, 6 hits, and a walk. Glavine not only pitched a magnificent game, but he also had a single which got the Mets started, scoring the first run of the ballgame. Everything about Tom Glavine we know: he is a first ballot Hall of Famer, 300 game winner, Cy Young Award winner, 20-game winner, and has a World Series Ring. What we do not know is when or if we will ever see this magnificent milestone reached ever again. Lets start out by looking down the list of who is close to this milestone. The closest man is Randy Johnson who has 284 career wins. He is out for the year with back surgery, and may never pitch again. He has to be considered unlikely to get to 300 wins. Next on the list is Mike Mussina, who is at win total 246. For the Moose to win 54 more games he has to start taking some serious steroids. Mus...

Tom Glavine joined pitching’s most prestigious club with a vintage performance, changing speeds and fooling hitters in the manner that made him one of baseball’s best. The stylish left-hander earned his 300th victory Sunday night with nervous family and friends looking on from near the Mets’ dugout on the first-base side. Read the full story.
**LIVE MILESTONE ALERTS** [David Stefanini]
2007-08-01 02:13:00
9:47 - A-ROD WATCH: As the Yanks are killing the White Soxs 16-3, A-Rod can not even get a hit, nevermind a HR. He is 0-5 and is likely done for tonight.9:41 - GLAVINE WATCH: The Mets grab a 2-1 lead, so Glavine is in line for his 300th career win. 9:24 - GLAVINE WATCH: No damage done in this inning for either team. The score remains in favor of the Brewers 1-0.9:23 - A-ROD WATCH: A-Rod hit a lazy pop-up just out of the infield. He is 0-4 in the game and stuck on 499 career home runs.9:22 - GLAVINE WATCH: The Mets can not get Glavine any help. They are losing 1-0.9:14 - GLAVINE WATCH: Glavine got through the inning by giving up only 1 run. However, the whole story is more telling, it looks like he lost the strike zone. On a 3-0 pitch, a Brewer swung and popped the ball straight up on a pitch that was clearly ball 4. Glavine needs to find the strike zone soon. Brewers lead 1-0.9:06 - GLAVINE WATCH: After a lead-off walk, then a base hit that was turned into a double by Moises Alou s...
Tri-fecta Anyone? [David Stefanini]
2007-07-31 20:09:00
Something very rare can happen today. So rare, there has never been a day like this in baseball history.Tom Glavine can become the 23rd player to get to 300 career wins. It is very possible this may be the last time we see this milestone achieved in the near future. The next closest person to 300 wins is Randy Johnson with 284 wins. But we do not know if he will ever pitch again. After that we have to go down the list to Mike Mussina who will not get to 300. The only pitcher I see that has a chance of getting to 300 is Johan Santana. Now onto the long ball where Alex Rodriquez can become the 22nd player to reach 500 career home runs. Unlike Glavine this milestone will likely be reached again. It is possible that this milestone will be reached two more times before this season is over. Still A-Rod will be the youngest player to ever reach 500 home runs. A-Rod is 32 years and 4 days old today. That will be 332 days younger than Jimmie Foxx was when Foxx hit his 500th.Finally the bigges...
