And, seeing as how I don't at all like the real John Adams, the second President of the United States, that's saying a lot.I just saw the first two episodes on HBO's new mini-series, John Adams, and I think I like it better than the Chronicles.Of course, the first two episodes did not get close to the part of the real life of John Adams that makes him a villain in my book. And that book is: respect for the First Amendment to our Constitution. Adams signed the Sedition Act into law shortly after he became President in 1796 - an Act that so trampled the First Amendment, that Thomas Jefferson was close to urging the South to leave the USA back then.I'll tell you more about that era when the HBO mini-series gets there.In the meantime, what I saw is superb, breathtakingly accurate history. Director Tony Gilroy’s debut, Michael Clayton, scored seven Oscar noms, including Best Picture and Best Director, and the cast to his follow-up is of similar caliber, with Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Wilkinson now joining Clive Owen and Julia Roberts in the thriller about the pharmaceutical industry, modern greed and espionage. However, the casting does sensically play into the title, with Thornton and Wilkinson in the roles of rivaling CEOs for massive drug companies and Owen and Roberts the opposing spies they set in motion in a race to obtain an invaluable “innovation.” Like Clayton, the film was written by Gilroy, and it’s good to see Wilkinson and the director working together again so soon after the former’s deserved Best Supporting Actor nom. 2007-10-15 04:59:00 Tina and I saw Michael Clayton last night - we liked it a lot.Although the movie was not without its flaws, I think it hit at least one original mark - doing something better than I recall ever seeing in any other movie.The movie starts off with a quite involved, detailed sequence. Michael Clayton - played to perfection by George Clooney - gets a call to see a client of his firm, who had left the scene of a hit-and-run in Westchester. We learn something of this client, his wife, and about Clayton, who drives off. The dawn is breaking, Clayton stops at the sight of some horses on the top of a hill. Clayton gets out of his car, walks up the hill to commune with the horses, and-That's when the movie really begins. Now we have of course seen faux beginnings in James Bond and all kinds of movie. But I don't believe I've ever seen one as effective as this one. Kudos to writer, director, producer Tony Gilroy.The rest of the movie was good. Some nice surprises, a few slow spots ...
