The Last Meaningless Debate
2007-09-05 20:15:00
Republicans are set to gather tonight in Durham, New Hampshire for what is probably the last meaningless presidential debate. Why meaningless? Because Fred Thompson, one of the national frontrunners, timed his entrance into the race to come just after the debate concludes. Of course, Thompson won't go unnoticed today. He is set to appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight and announce his entry into the race (the same venue Arnold Schwarzenegger used to announce he was running for governor several years ago). An announcement video will be shown on his website starting at midnight that confirms Thompson's candidacy. Thompson's campaign also began airing its first advertisement today in New Hampshire (it may even appear during tonight's debate). While New Hampshire voters may be angry that Thompson is snubbing their debate, the decision probably plays to Thompson's advantage. Thompson's Leno appearance is certain to get a lot of attention and the news networks are c...

David Yepsen: "It's The Electability, Stupid"The 2008 race for president in Iowa and around the country is evolving. In both parties, issues of electability are motivating many activists.Giuliani has credibility on terrorism and security, thanks to his handling of 9/11, and Republicans looking for a winner are looking beyond his abortion stance.Electability drives many Republicans to Romney. He has an executive style and runs a precise, corporate campaign. He's a former CEO with a reputation for fixing the Olympics and building a successful business. He's a Republican who won in heavily Democratic Massachusetts. All of that creates the image of a winner. He oozes electability.Enter Fred Thompson. The former senator and actor also carries a presidential style. But the early days of his campaign have had some fits and starts, and he's late to the race. If he can show activists he can win in November 2008, he could rally conservatives and take votes away from Romney and maybe Giul...
Iowa Straw Poll Winners and Losers

Iowa straw poll winners and losers. Anyone can blog first, but taking a step back, who really won? Winners: Mitt Romney: The obvious to start with, seeing as though he actually won. Tommy Thompson calls it quits
2007-08-15 05:36:00
And from the totally irrelevant department Tommy Thompson, past governor of Wisconsin and Secretary of health and human Services in George BushÂ’s first term, has bowed out of the presidential race. A poor showing in Iowa has convinced Thompson that it just is not going to happen. It is probably a good thing, as it will ease any brand confusion with Fred Thompson down the road. ~RJH Washington Post article link Tommy Thompson Leaves Race After Poor Showing in Iowa Poll By Chris Cillizzawashingtonpost.com Staff WriterMonday, August 13, 2007; A05Former Wisconsin governor Tommy G. Thompson dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination last night, a day after finishing sixth in the straw poll in Ames, Iowa.Thompson had pledged to leave the race if he did not finish first or second in Saturday's straw poll. Tommy Thompson Withdrawals Presidential Bid After Straw Poll

Tommy Thompson waits to be introduced by the Iowa Straw Poll in Ames, Iowa. REUTERS/Joshua Lott Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson withdrew from the presidential race on Sunday after a disappointing sixth place finish in the Iowa Republican straw poll. Thompson bet it all on the straw poll hoping a decent finish there would be a sign that his campaign was turning around but he lost that bet. The poll on Saturday placed him ahead of candidates who decided either not to show up to the event or they have not even entered the race yet. Duncan Hunter and John Cox also finished behind Thompson with less than 1% which is about where they have been polling. Thompson said if he did not finish in the top two in Saturday?s straw poll that he would withdrawal from the race. ?I have no regrets about running. Farewell, Tommy Thompson
2007-08-13 19:32:00
Tommy Thompson didn't beat around the bush when assessing the strength of his presidential campaign. It was Iowa or bust for Thompson, the former Wisconsin governor who visited each of Iowa's 99 counties leading up to the GOP straw poll in Ames this weekend. Thompson acknowledged that he would need a first or second place finish in the event to continue his campaign, but after a disappointing sixth he announced it was over. His debate performances have been unimpressive, his fundraising equally poor, and his message simply failed to catch on. The straw poll results proved to be a predictable tipping point."I have no regrets about running. I felt my record as Governor of Wisconsin and Secretary of Health and Human Services gave me the experience I needed to serve as President, but I respect the decision of the voters. I am leaving the campaign trail today, but I will not leave the challenges of improving health care and welfare in America," Thompson said in a campaign statement ...

On August 5, 2007, the Republican candidates, minus Fred Thompson who has not yet become an official candidate, debated in Iowa. Iowa is the first primary caucus state and Drake University played host to this important debate for Republican candidates in Des Moines, Iowa. George Stephanopoulos was the moderator for the debate with the ABC News ?This Week? Sunday morning show hosting the event. Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are leading the polls currently in Iowa with Mitt Romney coming in first in the non-binding straw poll on August 11th. Parsing The Straw Poll
2007-08-12 17:10:00
More than 14,000 ballots later, let's take a look at the results of the Ames Straw Poll.A win is a win--or at least that's the story the Romney campaign is trying to sell. I suppose that's true--a win is better than a loss, but how much is that win worth? He did what he needed to do, but a win over absent rivals Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Fred Thompson would have been far more valuable. The win does reflect Romney's strength in the state--he's been on the air for months, he has a solid campaign infrastructure, and he's been leading in the polls here since May. He's the clear frontrunner now in Iowa, but it's unclear if the victory will give him a bounce nationally, where he is running fourth. In the end, national polling may not matter if Romney is able to convincingly take the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary, where he also holds a lead, and use that momentum to surge to victories elsewhere as John Kerry in 2004.Romney garnered a slightly higher percentag...

Ames Straw Poll Results
2007-08-12 04:05:00
The Iowa Ames Straw Poll was not all good times and barbecue. Instead, there was a little Florida nostalgia when a voting machine malfunctioned, sending 1,500 ballots to be hand counted, resulting in a delay in the results. Optical scan machines from Diebold, rented by the state party, were recently decertified by the state of California for the 2008 election. Nevertheless, after an hour delay, and a lower turnout than expected, the results came in as follows:As expected, and no real shocker, Mitt Romney came out on top, winning over 4,500 votes of the 14,302 votes casts. Watching the news today, all attention was on who will be number two, which is to say the number two candidate gets the momentum. Despite Brownback?s push to pull out a strong showing in the poll, Mike Huckabee came in second, edging him out by a few hundred votes. It is a blow to the Brownback campaign who went into this event fighting for the top stop only to once again fail by the charm of the former Governor of...

Thomas F. Schaller: How Strong Is The Democratic Presidential Field?Right now, the Republican primary field is a mess. Insufficient cash flows, fleeing staffers and consultants, outdated themes and proposals, legitimacy issues with the party's conservative base, expressed unease from the GOP's dying moderate wing and, of course, a variety of problems arising from proximity to a certain incumbent president--each of the Republican candidates is suffering from at least one of those ailments. So it's high times across the aisle, right? The Democrats are apparently poised to retake the White House after eight long and painful years from a man many consider a usurper. Rank-and-file Democrats seem almost giddy about their field of substantive candidates. Not so fast. Though all the standard caveats apply about how much can change between now and next November, the Democrats are undoubtedly the favorites heading into 2008. Preparing For The Ames Straw Poll
2007-08-10 21:44:00
Several thousand Iowans will gather tomorrow for the Ames Straw Poll, sponsored by the Iowa GOP, which has traditionally been an early measuring stick for support. The event reflects both organization and money (plus the willingness to spend it) in first voting state. Critics charge, however, that the event is not a true reflection of support in Iowa--a fair claim. The event gauges the strength of a campaign operation more than the strength of the candidate. Supporters are often given free tickets (there is a $35 fee to attend--it's an Iowa GOP fundraiser), free transportation, free food, and entertainment once they arrive. This will be the fifth time the event has been held, with two of its previous winners going on to win the caucuses and the nomination (Bob Dole in 1996 and George W. Bush in 2000). Though its outcome may not forecast the eventual nominee, the straw poll is almost certain to winnow the Republican field. After poor results in 1999, Lamar Alexander and Dan Qua...

GOP Holding Back on YouTube Debate
2007-07-27 21:22:00
So far Rudy Giuliani has opted out of the debate citing scheduling conflicts and Mitt Romney has not made a decision. One of the concerns from Republicans are the format, and style of the questions. Mitt Romney was particularly disturbed by a snowman who asked a question about global warming."I think the presidency ought to be held at a higher level than having to answer questions from a snowman.?The only problem with this comment is that the question was asked by a voter posing as a snowman. Funny, but serious nonetheless.Republicans are already in deep in the internet and youth vote and to skip such a debate where the voters ask the questions could be seen as insulting and set them back in the battle for the internet. Republicans in the blogosphere are pushing for the candidates to take part in the debate, fearing such and outcome. The only three candidates committed to the debate are John McCain, Tommy Thompson and Ron Paul.

What Did We Miss?
2007-07-09 19:52:00
We've resumed our normal posting here at Political Realm, so let's take a look at the stories we may have overlooked during our holiday.? Tommy Thompson has called the Ames straw poll next month "must win" for his presidential campaign. Thompson has spent an extraordinary amount of time in the state, which he views as essential to build momentum going forward. With the absence of Giuliani and McCain, Thompson has a chance for a decent showing, but knocking off Mitt Romney and his impressive organization in the state would be most unlikely. Is Thompson laying the groundwork for an exit from the race if the results are disappointing or is he just trying to fire up his supporters?? Politics are certainly present around Independence Day, for better or worse. House Democrats marked the occasion with an advertising blitz targeting several potentially vulnerable Republicans around the country.? Michael Bloomberg revealed that he had heart surgery in 2000, prompting some to wonder if he w...

The '08 Hopefuls, Part 3: Tommy Thompson
2007-06-29 02:39:00
The '08 Hopefuls continues now with a view of Tommy Thompson, who served as the 42nd governor of Wisconsin and Bush's Secretary of Health and Human Services.EXPERIENCED AND QUALIFIEDTommy Thompson immediately struck me as someone who is experienced, qualified and capable of leading the nation in a better direction. For 13 years he served the people of Wisconsin well, being re-elected 3 times and occasionally slipping up, but for the most part doing a good job. Later, he went on to become the 7th Secretary of Health and Human services under George W. Bush, which I think gave him a feel of how things work in the Federal government.TIED TO A BAD PRESIDENTHowever, his service and loyalty to President Bush is something that makes me uneasy and possibly frightened at the prospect of having more of the same. I have repeatedly stated my views about George Bush, who I think will go down as a terrible leader, and the fact that Thompson served in his Cabinet for his entire first term makes m...

Their numbers are abysmal for someone who is the national frontrunner and for someone who was the frontrunner. Romney went up three points, courtesy of television ads and retail politics while Fred Thompson jumped an impressive 7 points. The sheer momentum of speculation is driving his numbers in Iowa. The only second tier candidate worth mentioning is Mike Huckabee who now polls at 5%, up 2 points from the last poll.DemocratsJohn Edwards 26%Barack Obama 21%Hillary Clinton 20%Bill Richardson 11%Joseph Biden 4%Chris Dodd 2%Dennis Kucinich 1%On the Democratic side, Edwards and Obama are down 3 point...

Skipping The Ames Straw Poll
2007-06-08 18:01:00
The dominoes fell in Iowa this week, changing the complexity of the race and possibly altering the impact the state may have on the race. After Rudy Giuliani announced that his campaign will not compete in the Ames straw poll held by Iowa Republicans August 11, John McCain's campaign quickly followed suit. A fourth would-be frontrunner, Fred Thompson, was already unlikely to compete in the event, having yet to officially enter the field. Those decisions could prove to have a significant impact, but the groups most hurt are probably the Romney campaign, the state Republican Party, and perhaps the Iowa Caucuses.Mitt Romney, the likely straw poll victor, will now receive only the smallest of bounces from the event. After building a formidable Iowa organization and appearing ready to spend millions on the event, his campaign likely scared off his chief rivals. Now any victory there carries far less weight without the marquee names attached, despite the fact that they will still be on th...

The Good And Bad
2007-05-19 07:06:00
Let's check out whose stock is up and whose in trouble. Good ? John McCain: McCain has had a good month. His campaign has seemed increasingly focused after a long period of confusing messages and themes. He seems to have found his niche--making the argument as a conservative alternative to Giuliani and as the competent, experienced candidate. By our account and many others, he was one of the winners of the second Republican debate. Finally, the Congress is finally getting things done on the immigration front. Yes, the image of McCain next to Ted Kennedy won't sit well with many conservatives, but he can sell it as an accomplishment and suggest the public needs to give it time to succeed. He'll also receive greater cover if a good number of Republicans vote for the bill and it's actually signed by the president.? Tom Tancredo: The movement of the immigration bill also helps Rep. Tancredo, whose pet issue is now certain to garner a great deal of attention, allowing him to attack a...

Republican Debate Reaction, Take Two
2007-05-16 06:16:00
Tonight's debate proved to be the most compelling and distinctive of the three debates that have taken place thus far in the 2008 race. Questions were far more pointed, candidates more confrontational and as a result voters were actually able to recognize distinctions on stage. The debate also offered clear winners and losers that haven't been as obvious in previous efforts. As we noted, in the California debate John McCain had a strong message, but his awkward delivery damaged his overall performance. Tonight he was far more relaxed and as a result, he appeared to be the most competent and presidential candidate in the field. He was attacked frequently for his work on campaign finance and immigration reform, but he was generally able to diffuse the issues when given the opportunity.
