Top 5 Songs Based on a Fictional Character
2008-10-03 05:04:00
Sometimes a writer is inspired enough to create an interesting, timeless, and lovable character to win the hearts of readers everywhere. And then sometimes that character inspires a song-writer to pay musical tribute. Here are my top favorite songs based on famous fictional characters. 5) Fett’s Vette Not being a very hard-core Star Wars fan, however, ...
Tuesday Top 10
2008-07-29 14:44:00
By Cameron ClarkThis is a more complete list of this week's PorchCast Top 5...my "Favorite Movie Characters of All-Time." I'll try to put some of them in order, but toward the top, my rankings could change from day to day. Some of the quotes are of the book variety if they didn't make it into the movies. I chose these characters because they made me laugh, envious, or were just plain interesting or entertaining. 10. Carl Spackler (Caddyshack)- "He's a cinderalla boy, out of nowhere..." One of the funniest characters per line ever written. Best Line: "So I jump ship in Hong Kong...."9. Egon Spangler (Ghostbusters)- Great dry humor. He grounded the whole theme of Ghostbusters in something other than slapstick. Best Line: "There is definitely a very slim chance we might survive."8. Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean)- Who doesn't want to be the Captain of The Black Pearl? I didn't understand the 3rd one though. Just weird.Best Line: "Why should I sail with any of you?...
CNN Doesn?t Understand The Top 10 List
2008-06-09 20:25:00
Here is the actual headline of the article. 10 best excuses for coming to work late Here is their list of excuses. 1. While rowing across the river to work, I got lost in the fog. 2. Someone stole all my daffodils. 3. I had to go audition for American Idol. 4. My ex-husband stole my car so I couldn’t ...
Top 10 Roseanne Episodes
2008-06-06 18:04:00
20 years ago, my favorite TV series came to life. I usually quote Roseanne more than any other film or TV show, so I thought I would end this week with a list of my Top 10 favorite episodes. Considering I own all nine seasons on DVD and have watched them more than I care to admit, I believe I've made a pretty comprehensive list.10. Tolerate Thy Neighbor: Roseanne's witnesses the Bowman's possessions being donated to (what she believes) charity while they're out of town. When they return they find their house has been robbed and are angered at Roseanne for letting it happen. My favorite moment would be the end of the episode where Cathy Bowman finally realizes she's in Lanford and no matter how much money she has, Roseanne will still reign supreme. It gets even funnier as Roseanne tempts Cathy to join her as one of "The Lanford Wives" a la The Stepford Wives and warns her she can't avoid it forever as her husband as already joined "The Lodge". 9. A Stash from the Past: Roseanne...
Top 10 Best Episodes of Sex and the City
2008-05-23 18:42:00
With the Sex and the City movie fast approaching, I thought I'd look back at the series as so many people are doing, and pick my top 10 favorite episodes. I loved the series finale, but I left it out of this count down, as I didn't find it fair to pick an episode that wraps every thing up so neatly. 10. I Love A Charade: The only episode from season five I actually like. Carrie scares Berger away with her ramblings...which should be forgiven since she's so freakin' pregnant in this episode. Miranda diddles her baby daddy and then flees town but gets scared into trying to win him back (which sets up her season six arch). Charlotte gets wooed by an adorable Harry but learns she has to be one of the chosen people. Miranda breaks a window with her fake boob cantaloupes. The wedding is the most beautiful part and the girls look gorgeous.9. Cock a Doodle Do!: Miranda and Carrie finally throw down. Miranda gets called out for being too judgmental and Carrie gets called out for being we...

2008-05-09 17:03:00
10. Let Oprah out of the basement.9. White-Out the "i" in all of her "Katie Holmes" business cards.8. Invite Jenna Elfman, Leah Remini, Kirstie Alley, and Beck over to have a fun let-down-your-hair girl's night of auditing each other with e-meters. 7. Dust the foot prints from all the couch cushions in the house. 6. Have the love child of Chris Klein...again.5. Change Suri's batteries.4. Learn to form an opinion for herself.3. File for divorce...from L. Ron Hubbard.2. Take Suri to the kitchen to show her "where mommy works now".1. Convince her husband Tom that the only 'Mission Impossible' he should be concerned with is saving his public image.
The India Blog Celebrity Top 10
2008-04-22 06:21:00
The India blogging industry is still nascent with many still trying to reach a large audience. There are still some early blogger ?celebrities? that are making an impact and we highlight them below using a five point criteria. Top 10 Sci-Fi Hot Women
2008-04-13 06:12:00
First was Top 10 Sexiest Women in Sci-Fi TV series, now we have the Top 10 Sci-Fi Hotties.10. Milla JovovichThis beautiful, Ukrainian-born actress has a habit of taking roles that put her exquisitely athletic body to the test. So is it any wonder then that she was chosen to play a perfectly engineered woman in Luc Besson?s The Fifth Element? As Leeloo, Milla runs around in a wet T-shirt, kicks alien ass and creates one of the most memorable sci-fi characters of the past decade.9. Rachel LuttrellThere?s just something about a warrior woman that?s undeniably sexy, and this Stargate Atlantis beauty is no exception. In this scene, she?s possessed by an evil alien entity, which causes her to lay a savage beat-down on a friend who is three times her size?and she looks damn good doing it.8. Billie PiperSince 1963, Doctor Who has been a staple of British popular culture, and with babes like this it?s easy to see why. On the BBC series, Piper plays the gorgeous Rose Tyler, a young shop assis...

The Top Ten Sci-Fi Films That Never Existed
2008-04-13 01:48:00
10. The "Real" Alien 31992, Directed by, oh, let's say Ridley Scott The most excited I've ever been to see a movie ever in my life was the moment I saw the first Alien 3 "teaser" trailer in 1991 (teasers are shot well before the movie itself is finished filming). It's the one that promised the aliens were coming to freaking Earth. No, I didn't dream it. They really did show that trailer (they even have a copy of it HERE), sending it to theaters before they had even started production, before they had even picked a script. Visions of awesomeness flashed through my head, a Blade Runner-ish Earth with sprawling, filthy buildings, huge flashing billboards with giant Asian women on them, beat-up flying cars whooshing by and steam always rising from the streets for some reason. And then the aliens start breeding in the miles of dank sewers that tangle under the bustling streets, the creatures boiling up out of manholes by the hundreds, cut to pieces by Marines with pulse rifles a...

Top 10 Gays on TV
2008-04-11 21:11:00
10. Marco Del Rossi (Degrassi: The Next Generation): Alright, go ahead and laugh, but Marco (aside from being hot) is actually part of the few shows out there that show a young teen's struggle with coming out. In other shows it all just hilarious anecdotes or flashbacks (Will & Grace), but we see his character actually deal with situations head on...take for instance, whenhe's not allowed to donate blood, because he's gay.9. Stanford Blatch (Sex and the City): Well...anyone who can put up with Carrie's high pitched banshee screams for so long should wind up on a list somewhere. I understood and sympathized with Stanford's self-deprecating values as a gay man in the competitive New York metro area. It's not easy living in a city where models run freely. Fortunately he snagged Marcus at a Starbucks, and thus proved to himself and some viewers that looks aren't everything.8. Mel Marcus (Queer As Folk): Never have I been in more love with a lesbian, than I was with the angry, bit...
Top 10 Moments of Year 23
2008-04-04 22:33:00
Well...today is my birthday and at 3:44pm I officially became 24. Usually I feel this big build up to my birthday, but this year it sort of came out of nowhere. Anyway...I thought for this Friday's "Top 10" list, I'd recap the past year as a 23 year old.10. MAKING 23 YEARS: When I was 3, I was diagnosed with Leukemia. I could've died...but I've been in remission/"cured" of it since the age of 6. So parents remind me every year that it's just special that I'm even here now. That sounds kind of morbid...but it's not really.9. TATTOO: I looooove tattoos...and am now obsessed with getting a little more work done. But I got to start a 'Kabbalah-themed' tattoo on my arm. The tree of life, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the ego/snake, the Ari. I love it. 8. MY BLOG: Yes, I'm thankful for this piece-o-crap blog. I started it for a couple of reasons; 1. So that if I ever choose to delete MySpace, I wont lose my blogs with it...and 2. So I can have more control over the...
Top 3 dirtiest Asian cities
2008-03-28 03:52:00
By Vipin Agnihotri Despite gaining so much in the recent years, it?s a matter of shame that when The India Street decided to come up with top 3 dirtiest Asian cities, two comes from India, namely, Mumbai and New Delhi. In my opinion, Dhaka is the dirtiest Asian city followed by Mumbai and New Delhi. Dhaka, Bangladesh- Located in southern Asia, between Burma and India, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh battles with the constant threat of water pollution. Point to be noted here is that surface water is often thick with disease and pollutants from the use of commercial pesticides. With an estimated 150 million people living in a relatively small area, cleaning up the problem is real tough. Mumbai, India- Indian government has to work quite hard if they want to transform Mumbai back into a burgeoning metropolis. A recent private-sector report, Vision Mumbai, proposed changes in infrastructure, pollution control and economic growth strategy, which contributed to the seeking of approx...

Top 10 Songs That Put The Hitch In My GiddyUp
2008-03-21 20:32:00
10. Since You've Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson: Shortly after Behind These Hazel Eyes came out, my friend's boring, blue-blooded, boyfriend whined that Since You've Been Gone pales in comparison to Eyes. I almost collapsed from dizziness cause my eyes couldn't stop rolling. Gone is a great song...though...I do like to rock out to Miss Independent sometimes. JUDGED.9. I Believe In A Thing Called Love - The Darkness: GREAT song. It gives me a certain "Queen" feeling. It's kind of a shame The Darkness were such a flash-in-the-pan band, but they did give us a great song on their way out. Hearing this song makes me wish I had a car so that I could just turn up the stereo and head bang at red lights. God I miss those days.8. Like It Or Not - Madonna: Love it. I love her in general. But I put this song on, slap some sunglasses on my face, and strut down the posh 30th avenue of Astoria feeling like 'the shit'. It's a real "I don't give a fuck what ya'lls think...I'ma keep doing my t...

10 Superhero Comic Books Your Kids Should Be Reading
2008-03-06 00:56:00
There was a time when parents warned their kiddos that reading comics would rot their brains. Okay, some people still say that, but I'm sure a lot of you would love for your kids to put down that Xbox controller and just read something! The fam and I are in the local comic shop every Wednesday like obedient comic nerds and I'll let the uninitiated in on a little secret... comic books really aren't for kids. Case in point: Supergirl. I'm not referring to older teenagers, of course, as I'm sure plenty of the mainstream books are suitable. However, tweens and younger should be relegated to the comic shop's (appallingly) small kiddie section. Don't worry, your geeklings will dig this stuff, too! Both DC and Marvel have age-appropriate titles that feature your kids' favorite superheroes. Best of all, they are self-contained stories, so your kids won't get lost if they miss an issue or two. (Saves you money in the long run, that. Trust me, collecting is a disease.)I heartily reco...
Top 10 Most Annoying Feuds
2008-02-29 21:31:00
10. Sarah Jessica Parker vs. Kim Cattrall: Ugh. The only reason we're just NOW starting to see the Sex and the City movie is because producers finally agreed to pay Kim Cattrall bucket loads of money. She was the one key player holding out for more cash. Rumored to have started shortly after the end of the first season, Kim was reportedly upset SJP was making more money and now one of the show's producers. Since the end of season 1! She's been a thorn in SJP's side since that point and it's been clear in interviews and photo ops that the two women never stand next to each other if they don't have to. I'm sorry, but Kim needs to get on her knees and thank Michael Patrick King and SJP that she's not in England still doing some low budget play in the back of a pub. Gift horse, mouth, Kim.9. Madonna vs. Elton John: This feud is just incredibly annoying because I would much rather see a list of people Elton John DOES like. No matter what shit storm her throws at Madonna (ridiculi...
10 Great Concepts That Need To Be Real
2008-02-25 10:00:00
Gizmodo has a great list of 10 great concepts that really need to be real. One of the good points about this list is the ‘feasible’ point - all of these concept designs are realistic, and it would be possible to create them. My favourite has to be the Yamaha Tesseract, a concept bike/quad/monster [See left], ...

Ten Beautiful Places To Visit In Russia
2008-02-20 15:36:00
Russia, or now more commonly known as Russian Federation, can be found in Eastern Europe. It is a country filled with rich history and culture as well as wonderful and beautiful places to visit. Here are some of the beautiful places that the great country of Russia has to offer. 1.) Red Square of Moscow A visit to Russia deserves a visit to the Red Square. This is a popular tourist destination in this country. Here, you will find the famous St. Basil's Cathedral as well as the State History Museum, and if these are not enough, you will also see here the Mausoleum of Lenin.2.) Lenin Mausoleum Of course, you should always visit the Lenin Mausoleum. In this great place, you will see the embalmed body of the great Lenin. Word of caution though, photo taking as well as cell phones are not allowed inside the mausoleum, and also, you have to leave your bags in the mausoleum's baggage office. 3.) The Kremlin A visit to Russia is never complete without a visit to the Kremlin. Do not forget...
The 10 Most Beautiful Beaches In Australia
2008-02-19 15:30:00
Australia, the world?s largest island, has some of the best surfing beaches to be found anywhere. Here, visiting the beach is as much a social experience as an opportunity for relaxation and water sports, since the beach is integral to Australian culture. While there will always be disagreement over which of the thousands of beaches are the best, the following selection represents a variety of urban and regional surf beaches that are popular with both surfers and those looking for a fun day on the beach. Noosa Heads, in Queensland, is one of Australia?s best family beaches. Facing north, it is more like an ocean cul-de-sac, with generally gentler surf conditions than might be found on the more open beaches. Just behind the beach is the famous Hastings Street shopping strip. High fashion boutiques, art galleries, and trendy restaurants run along its shopper-friendly pavements, shaded by lush, leafy trees. The Gold Coast?s Burleigh Heads is famous for its pine tree backdrop and great ...

The Czech Republic has lots to offer its visitors, and here are the ten beautiful places that are a must-see in this country.1.) 2008-02-17 15:23:00
Few things compare to the beauty of nature, and the earth is home to countless enchanting, serene and beautiful places. You surely have your own favorites, whether they are larger-scale locations or as simple as the rock garden you created in your backyard or the tree-lined street you grew up on.Below are our choices for the top-ten most beautiful on a larger scale (and admittedly we haven't been everywhere!) ... be sure to share YOUR choice for the most beautiful physical place on earth at the end of this article!1. Grand Canyon National Park, ArizonaCarved by millions of years of water and wind, the Grand Canyon is an awe-inspiring 5,000-feet deep, 277 miles long and 18 miles wide. Probably the United State's most well-known national park, the Grand Canyon is home to plateaus, hills, gorges, trails and the Colorado River, all set in one of the most impressive backdrops imaginable.Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii If your jaw doesn't drop when you first witness the Grand Canyon, it lik...
Mexico's 10 most beautiful colonial cities
2008-02-16 15:20:00
Hernán Cortés' conquest of the Aztec empire in 1521 certainly set off a culture clash. The conquistadors remade Mexico in Spain's image, superimposing European architecture, ideas, religion and social customs on the indigenous culture. The three centuries that followed were wracked by destruction and tragedy, but they also brought the unique cultural fusion that resulted in beautiful colonial cities filled with domed and porticoed stone and tile buildings, cobblestone streets and verdant plazas. Although the anointed colonial heartland lies in the highlands of central Mexico, colonial cities endure throughout the country. Each city on our Top 10 list has its own unique character and heritage, but all offer awe-inspiring architecture, tempestuous history and lively traditions. Mérida:The White City disproves the common wisdom that the Maya are a lost civilization: Even today, Mérida's Maya keep their culture alive with a daily lineup of traditional Yucatecan dances, open-air seren...
Top 10 Best Albums
2008-02-15 17:32:00
10. Pieces of You (Jewel): I came into this album somewhat late in life. I had bought it when it came out (for the couple singles I dug), but I never got into the whole folky album. One day on the train I got into one of those situations where I could pull out my ipod to change the album cause I had a tiny Mexican jammed under my armpit and a Greek couple jammed up on my other side during rush hour, so I was forced to listen to the album....and much to my shock, I started to fall in love with the coffee shop/college student/folk music coming out of this chipped-toothed Alaskan who used to live in her car. What I kind of love most about the album is how it's actually a live recording of her. If you listen to the radio versions and whats on the album, the radio versions are heavily produced and the album is just her. Beautiful. My favorites from the album would be "Amen", "You Were Meant For Me", and "Little Sister".9. Speak For Yourself (Imogen Heap): The one-woman band that is Imo...
The 10 Most Beautiful Places in America
2008-02-15 15:14:00
1. Red Rock Country (Sedona, Ariz.)Ever since the early days of movies, when Hollywood has wanted to show the unique beauty of the West, it has gone to Sedona, a place that looks like nowhere else. Beginning with The Call of the Canyon in 1923, some hundred movies and TV shows have been filmed in and around town. We fell under Sedona?s spell, too, and while debating our No. 1 spot kept returning to it for the same reasons Hollywood does: The area?s telegenic canyons, wind-shaped buttes and dramatic sandstone towers embody the rugged character of the West ? and the central place that character holds in our national identity. There?s a timelessness about these ancient rocks that fires the imagination of all who encounter them. Some 11,000 years before film cameras discovered Sedona, American Indians settled the area. Homesteaders, artists and, most recently, New Age spiritualists have followed. Many cultures and agendas abound, but there?s really only one attraction: the sheer, exuber...
SayNoToCrack?s Top 5 Drivethru Songs
2008-02-12 07:48:00
So apparently some people have enough spare time on their hands in groups that they actually write songs and sing them. To squawk-boxes. At drivethrus. I’m a fan of fast food and a fan of music, and have always wanted a soundtrack to my life. But I don’t think I’ve taken any of ...
The 7 Lazy Exercise That Works
2008-02-09 14:59:00
1. Walking.Walking is something you can do anywhere, anytime, with no equipment other than a good pair of shoes. Choose your favourite spots such as Shopping Malls, Parks or by the Seasides. Just simply walk and you can get your cardio going!2. Interval training.Whether you are walking, running or working out your own way of exercising. Try different timing of each sets. E.g: Walk faster after 10 minutes of normal walk, then continue walking without stopping or climbing stairs.3. Squats.Think of how you sit down in a chair, only the chair's not there. Do several sets and then try to hold the sitting position before you get up.4. Lunges.Like squats, lunges work all the major muscles of the lower body: gluteals, quadriceps, and hamstrings.5. Push-ups.This is the easiest exercise, that anyone can do. Do the normal easy push up to get best results for your arm, shoulder, chest and back. Spread your arm just as wide as your chest, hold on to the floor. Gently let the gravity pulls your ...
Top 10 Best Movie Heroes Ever
2008-02-08 22:41:00
10. Hercules (Disney's Hercules): I'm not even sure how one can pull off a "historically inaccurate MYTH", but Disney managed to do it. This boy has his godly powers cut in half, his father wont let him return home until he saves the world, his coach is an annoying goat voiced by Danny DeVito, and to top it off his girlfriend, who he's like totally in love with, is totally working for the god of the dead/stabbing him in the back. But through it all, he perserveres and saves the day. He even goes into the underworld and saves his girlfriend's life...even though she was such a heinus bitch. THEN he even gives up going home to Olympus to stay with her on Earth. 9. Evelyn Couch (Fried Green Tomatoes): Played by the buxom Kathy Bates, Evelyn was a hero in my eyes. She puts up with her abusive mother-in-law and a fat ass husband who'd rather watch sports than tickle her ivories. Through pure will and determination (and the catchy phrase "Towanda!") she starts to lose weight, stops ca...
Top 10 Best Movie Villains Ever
2008-01-29 16:22:00
10. Joan Crawford (Mommie Dearest): Kind of seems harsh to put such a real life legend in the count down, but let's cut the crap...she was a beyotch. The hell that she put her children through and to top it all off, after seeing the movie I was afraid to go near a wire hanger for 2 years. She was an abusive, alcoholic, slut puppy who took her rage out on her adopted daughter Christina. I'm sure Pax-Thien Jolie Pitt Voight was happy to have side stepped any Joan Crawfords who might have attempted to adopt him. 9. Michael Myers (Halloween): You gotta hand it to ol' Mikey. A relic from the 70's horror genre, he has been in the game the longest. He chased Jamie Lee Curtis for how long? Even after finally killing her, he manages to go on another murder spree (Resurrection) and unfortunately (or fortunately) wound up killing Tyra Banks' character. Jason? Freddie? They kind of gave up on their cause...and were forced by Hollywood execs to battle each other in crappy "Versus" films st...
Top 10 Weirdest Google Searches That Have Directed People Here
2008-01-27 03:27:00
Thanks to Google Analytics, I can see the exact Google searches people are making that lead them to my humble site. The most common phrase that brings people to my blog, believe it or not, is "Amy Cottrell." Many of those searches are being made by potential clients who, no doubt, are probably trying to verify my resume.(By the way, if you are checking up on me, yes I went to Harvard University and have won three Pulitzer Prizes. Yeesh.) Without further adieu, here are the 10 weirdest Google searches that have directed people to Geek Parenting (with my commentary, of course): 1. "speed racer erotic s&m"  (No lie, I'm the very first Google search result for this exact phrase.)2. "rectal hygiene"(Okay, this one actually makes perfect sense, as I famously wrote my senior thesis on rectal hygiene. Or was it Native American poetry?)3. "anime on toilet" (Again, slightly disturbing. I'm sure they found this entry, but was that what they were really looking for?)4. "kid bath...

Top 10 Best TV Friends Ever
2008-01-21 17:30:00
10. Orlando Pinatubo (Strangers With Candy): For some reason this high school student, played by Orlando Pabotoy, was drawn to and attracted to a 46-year-old ex-con with every STD known to man. Jerri treated him like crap, calling him a "chimpapeano" and remarking about how he has "coconut-head hair"...Orlando still managed to make her a "friendship poster" and yearned to take her to the school dance. Maybe he was blind and somewhat mildly retarded? (Editor's note: I totally rode the subway once sitting right across from him on my way out to La Guardia airport. It took all my courage not to blurt out "Poorlando!")9. Dwight Schrute (The Office): I only wanted to list one character from The Office and it was a toss up between Jim and Dwight. In the end, I had to go with Dwight, played by Rainn Wilson. Not only does he stand by Michael through countless fights, being fired, forced to do Michael's laundry, prank after prank after prank from Jim and Pam, fighting office bats, driving t...
Top 10 Websites For Geeky Kids
2008-01-20 20:47:00
Though my kids have yet to do anything with my computer other than rip off the shift keys, I do try to keep my eye out for cool sites for children. I actually write for a few, so I make a mental note whenever I see something interesting. Mind you, this list is far from exhaustive and I urge you to suggest more below, but these are my picks for the top 10 Websites for geeky kids. BrainPOP - This is actually an educational site, but your geeklings won't ever notice. The award-winning games and fun, animated videos make this a popular choice with school teachers and homeschooling parents. In fact, many parents prepare their children for standardized tests by using BrainPOP. NASA Kids' Club - There's something romantic about space, which is why many of us probably wanted to become astronauts when we were kids. I think a child's interest in astronomy should be heartily encouraged, which is why NASA Kids' Club is high on my list. Here, kids will have access to amazing photographs, ...

Top 10 Gadgets And Gizmos To Help Keep Your Little Geek Safe
2007-12-12 15:17:00
As a parent and admitted neurotic, I find myself very dependent on safety products that promise to protect my children. Whether it's electric shock, choking, SIDS, ninja assassins... I'm afraid of it all. Being a geek parent in the 21st century means having access to numerous gadgets and gizmos to help combat the dangers that constantly surround your toddling spawn. I heartily recommend the following 10:1. Angelcare Movement Sensor - Granted, a paralyzing fear of SIDS isn't healthy, but the Angelcare Movement Sensor helps to calm even the most nervous first-time parent. This device fits under a baby's crib mattress and, should he/she ever stop moving (i.e., breathing) for longer than 20 seconds, an alarm will sound so you can rush to your child's aid. 2. Coast Innovations Itzbeen Baby Care Timer - Too sleep-deprived to remember when you changed or fed baby last? With the press of a few buttons, this gadget keeps a schedule when you are too busy to watch the clock. The Baby Care...
