Top Gear Season 12 promo
2008-10-22 12:29:00
Season 12 begins on November 2nd... of course it's only broadcast in Britain and we won't get it here in North America on the lame BBC America for at least a year. You'll have to resort to ... other ways... to see it any sooner...
Something Awful parodies Top Gear Challenges
2008-08-18 01:08:00
We're right in the middle of watching every single episode of Top Gear (that is, in the J.C. years, or Jeremy Clarkson - not the series before which goes back 20 years and has an entirely different cast and purpose) and noticed this of Top Gear's infamous Challenges that Something Awful produced. <right click> and <open in new tab> http://www.somethingawful.com/d-/news/top-gear-challenge.php&nb-sp; It's right on - although there is one historical inaccuracy and one Challenge that has been obsoleted: 1) James May wasn't in Series 1 - he didn't come along until Series 2. 2) Big Foot truly exists - we read it on the Internet just this past week! The complete list, from Something Awful, follows (note that they are incorrectly using the term "season" - in Britain these are known as "series"): Season 1: Episode 7Hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May purchase three hatchbacks for under £1,000 apiece, then determine which is th...
Japan Car Blog reviews Top Gear 11.04 GT-R vs Bullet Train race
2008-07-17 08:28:00
The always excellent Japan Car Blog reviews the latest episode of Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson raced a Bullet train across Japan. The Hamster and James May were in the bullet train and their journey also included a shuttle bus, another train, a ferry, and a ____________ (can't say, don't want to spoil the surprise or the great soundtrack that plays during it). Jeremy got the GT-R and a 400-mile route to follow from western Japan thru Tokyo and across the bay to the finish. Their blog includes low-res segments of the race: http://japancarblog.com/2008/07-/top-gear-clarksons-ego-in-gt-r--vs-bullet-train/ (suggest- <right click> and <open in new tab>) or the entire episode is available via torrent sites. They also correctly point out that some of Jeremy's comments are culturally offensive. Actually the entire cast makes more than a few gaffes, and they all look tired and glad to get it over with. James May looks particularly worn out, or perhaps he is just...
Did Top Gear plagiarize Ben Hur? ;-)
2008-07-04 21:14:00
Plagiarize - it's an ugly word. It means that you don't have an original idea and blatantly copy one from somebody else. It is, unfortunately, a situation that has occurred before on Top Gear. Top Gear started a new season in Europe last month and enthusiasts everywhere are working hard to see the broadcasts... by whatever means they have at their disposal (we don't want to know about illegally pirated copies and torrent downloads - perhaps if they'd skip the silly idea of attempting to recreate Top Gear for Americans and just send us the originals...????). Season 11, Episode 1 has a typical/Clarksonian stunt involving the cast building their own police cars (at a cost of no more than 900 pounds) and equipping them (500 pounds). So few quid doesn't yield much in the way of valuable police equipment... and of course the guys aren't trained in legitimate police tactics. So of course improvisation is the order of the day. That's where Clarkson makes his mistake... bl...

top gear op canvas!
2008-04-10 11:53:00

2008-04-03 06:36:00
Wait a minute, right now I am having a hard time trying to imagine just what the American version of Top Gear is going to look like, I mean I am a huge fan of the UK Top Gear that is airs weekly on BBC America, the show has three hosts and it works, but its more comedy than anything else. These three guys are not afraid to tell you what they really think of the vehicles they are test driving and that would including test driving the Chevrolet Corvette that in their minds is a good track car, but not a daily driver and the Shelby GT500 which didn’t impress them much because of the Suspension, it just wasn’t there. In the end they pointed out that the Roush Mustang that Jeremy Clarkson test drove, he would rather purchase that as it was better overall. The point is, NBC isn’t going to be able to duplicate this, I mean they are not going to be able to really voice their opinions on these cars, it would be interesting to watch, however I don’t see it.Like I said, I am having a h...
Top Gear presenter, Richard Hammond plugs the Th!nk City
2008-03-30 03:19:00
Many of you know Richard Hammond from the very popular and amusing show about all things automotive from Britain called Top Gear. Did you know that he is also a columnist for the UK tabloid The Mirror? Neither did I, but apparently that is indeed the case and has been since 2004. On Fridays he "gives his expert insight into the world of motoring, while on Saturday he gives his own irreverent take on the week's news," according to the Mirror's website. The reason I bring this up is because he did a piece the other day on the electric Th!nk city car which is coming to England. In the past, Top Gear has not been especially kind to other electric vehicles they've featured, so I was surprised that he seems to be quite upbeat about the Th!nk. Of course, he hasn't driven it yet but says, "I'll no doubt give the THINK a go..." Hopefully if he does, he'll refrain from blowing it up.Gallery: Th!nk City[Source: The Mirror]
How fast is the Bugatti Veyron? Not fast enough to outrun a Eurofighter.
2008-03-26 01:43:00
I saw this episode on Top Gear (which is an awesome show BTW) wherein they raced a Bugatti Veyron against a Euro-fighter.  The fighter jet had to go 1 mile vertical and back and the Bugatti had to go 1 mile horizontal and back.  Well here is a home video of the event. Pretty cool. Oh alright, here's the original: > >

Richard Hammond to cover F1 for BBC

HIMYM & Top Gear - A Wonderful Combination
2008-03-19 02:49:00
Last week I suggested to you that Monday, March 17 might represent a true night of televisual bliss. I was not wrong. Top Gear last night was bloody brilliant, and even if How I Met Your Mother did not reach the dizzyingly funny heights of some episodes, it was certainly a solid effort in the writers' first episode back from the strike.Even better than that, however, was the fact that despite being moved from the 8:00 timeslot to the 8:30 timeslot, HIMYM performed above its season average in the 18-49 demo. Plus, it built on the numbers delivered by The Big Bang Theory, and was up against the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars. CBS ought to get off the fence and declare that HIMYM is no longer "on the bubble," but squarely placed in the "renewed for next season" category. Do you hear me CBS? Renew the show for next season. Renew it now. It built on the numbers from its lead-in, and was up against the highest rated half-hour of DWTS. Not to men...
Classic Top Gear 1990: Lexus LS 400 vs. Mercedes 420SE vs. Jaguar 4.0 vs. B
2008-03-19 01:38:00
Every once and a while, a classic Lexus LS 400 clip will show up on Youtube, showing the car up against its competitors, and it always amazes me just how throughly Lexus thought out their first model. Here we have a 1990 video clip from Top Gear, putting the LS 400 up against the Mercedes 420SE, Jaguar 4.0, and the BMW 735i: To think that the Mercedes cost £4000 more than the LS 400, and didn’t even come with air conditioning or a radio (mind you, it was the long-wheelbase version). I’ve read that the luxury brands at the time were fairly complacent, but I had no idea of the extent.

Bugatti! I Like Top Gear
2008-03-12 03:41:00
I know very little about cars, I can admit that. In fact, I happily admit it. I think there's no shame in not knowing about cars. I can drive a stick and have been known to go 88 MPH on occasion (just to see if it would work without a flux capacitor), but before last night I had no idea what a Bugatti Veyron was. My life has now changed forever. Not because I'm now aware (as Wikipedia informed me) that money is lost by Bugatti on every Veyron made, but because I watched a Bugatti Veyron go head to head with a Eurofighter Typhoon in a two-mile drag race on Top Gear. That's right, it's Tuesday so we're talking Monday night television, and Monday night television is Top Gear. I don't know what I did before I became aware of Top Gear, and I certainly don't know what I'm going to do when its season ends. Sure, How I Met Your Mother is going to come back next week, and I can't express my joy at that, but Top Gear is, well, as I've said before,...

Oh That Top Gear, I am Smitten
2008-03-05 01:49:00
Okay, I've only seen two episodes so far, but Top Gear is quickly becoming my favorite show on television. I'm contemplating TiVoing the old episodes that BBC America is airing along with the new ones so that I can see more of it. Frankly, truth be told, I'm considering re-watching last night's episode because I enjoyed it so much. But why is that? What about the show is just so wonderful that I'm falling in love with it? Well, it's not the supercharged cars. I'll give you that the cars are very cool, but I'm not someone obsessed with cars, so that's not why I'm tuning in. It's the hosts. It all comes down to those three brilliant, wonderful, wacky, zany men. For those of you who don't recall, they are Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. I don't care what they pretend to be or not be, these are three smart men who go out and act like complete and total buffoons, and that's funny.Last night the men were char...
Top Gear Runs Hot, but quarterlife Leaves Me Cold
2008-02-28 00:39:00
I know I'm a day late with this one, but hopefully I'm not a dollar short… Top Gear. The new season started on Monday night on BBC America, and though I'm not a gear head, I'm an instant fan. I'd heard prior to the new season starting that the show was fun, but for some reason I'd never really got around to watching it. But, what with my usual weekly fare on hiatus there was a 45-minute window in my viewing schedule and I slotted Top Gear in. Now, frankly, I'm not quite sure what I did without it. Okay, that's an overstatement. It's fun, but it's not the be all and end all of television. I'm going to continue watching for the rest of the season, though. For those of you who haven't seen it, Top Gear focuses on driving and all things remotely relevant to it. They test cars, they talk to celebrities about cars (and make the celebs run the Top Gear course in a car), and last night they went searching for the best driving ro...

Cars and the media - Interest in cars gets into Top Gear
2008-02-08 05:41:00
Whether it is Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond, Vicki Butler-Henderson, or any other media car reviewer or online amateur, it seems as though everyone has an opinion on what the best cars to be driving (or seen to be driving) are. Looking back, it seems as though just a couple of decades ago, there were only a few real mainstream magazines on the shelves, most notably Motor magazine which merged with AutoCar, and Performance Car which then became Car magazine; now it is difficult to escape the mass of car magazines which fill the shelves of the nation's newsagents. The current best selling car magazine, Top Gear was first published in 1993 as a spin off to the Top Gear TV series, which first came into being in 1977 as a 30 minute BBC Midlands TV programme, which reviewed new car models and covered other car-related issues such as road safety, classic cars and motorsport. Since this time, the two biggest mainstream UK Car programmes, Top Gear and Fifth Gear, have become importan...

Pimp my Ride vs Top Gear: Kings of Car Culture
2008-02-08 05:40:00
Ever since Henry Ford spawned the internal combustion engine, petrol heads from around the world have worshiped the automobile. Car culture expresses itself in many forms; there are a plethora of magazines which cover all manner of car topics such racing, off-roading and classic cars; while on TV two of the most influential shows currently on our screens are T`op Gear and Pimp My Ride. Top Gear is a long running, award-winning BBC show about cars, and has been running since 1977. In recent years it has become more quirky and humorous and as such attracts a wide following, with some 8 million weekly viewers in the UK and an estimated 350 million viewers worldwide. But perhaps Top Gear's greatest achievement is its wide appeal; a large proportion of its viewers are not car enthusiasts. The show is presented by the oft-said arrogant Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond (nicknamed The Hamster by his co-presenters), James May - a well spoken, long-haired hippy type, and The Stig - a mysteri...

Top Gear Magazine Reviews the Lexus IS-F
2008-02-02 02:11:00
Top Gear Magazine has posted up their review of the Lexus IS-F, and it’s just as sharply written and clever as you would expect. Most of their praise is a double-edged sword, as every compliment is balanced with a swipe at the rest of Lexus’ lineup: Where my keep-it-simple plan falls apart, is when a company like Lexus, which has only ever made brilliantly built but dull cars, produces something like the IS-F. It ruins the whole generalization game and forces you to be specific. Now, whenever anyone asks me about Lexus I’m going to be forced to say they’re all OK, but the IS-F is the very definition of exceptional. Anything else would be wrong, because that’s precisely what it is. Only exceptional really describes accurately what it is, because the rest of the range is as interesting as a blank sheet of paper next to the IS-F. This car is very interesting indeed. In the same way the company studied microscopically, then re-invented the luxury car market...

Data Security No Laughing Matter For UK Top Gear Host
2008-01-08 04:17:00
The BBC is reporting that one of their own, Top Gear?s host Jeremy Clarkson, has fallen victim to a phishing scam.  A scam that benefitted Diabetes UK, a charitable organization, by five hundred pounds (money, not weight).  The person to blame?  Mr. Clarkson.  I?ve never seen his TV show (I rarely flip through BBC America, although I?ll watch it from time to time), but apparently he?s very opinionated if what I'm reading on Wikipedia is true (and well worth a read for his quotes, assuming you're not easily offended).  He decided to extend his cocksure attitude to the HMRC data fiasco.  In a newspaper column, he published his account number and sort code for his account at Barclays, a financial services provider, in order to prove that people couldn?t fall victim because of two missing CDs.  If you will recall, a data breach was caused when two CDs sent out by Her Majesty?s Revenue and Custom services was lost by the courier.  Clarkso...
