Off Topic: The Griffey Ball
2008-06-11 02:58:00
Cody Ross' recent comments about Ken Griffey Jr.'s 600th home run ball really irked me.  A Marlins season ticket holder, Joe, caught the ball and hasn't decided what to do yet.  Here's what Ross said: Just give it to the Hall of Fame, get to meet him, get an autograph, whatever.  But people get greedy. They want to make some money.  I guess the whole Internet thing kicked all of this stuff off.  It didn't use to be like this, but it's a different era. People get money hungry now. This is coming from Cody Ross, a man who will have made over a million dollars for three years of baseball.  A guy whose '09 salary alone should be close to a million bucks.  It's ridiculous for Ross to flippantly suggest Joe would be greedy to make money off the ball. The ball might be worth anywhere from $15,000 to $100,000.  For many people, that's a life-changing amount of money.  A down payment on a new house, maybe.  Joe is right to take his t...

Cameron Diaz and Diddy a touchy topic
2008-06-02 12:25:00
Careful opening that door! Cameron Diaz and Diddy could be behind it. The actress and the hip-hop/fashion mogul certainly have become cozy - and fond of playing hide and seek. Back in March, they had dinner in L.A., and, for some reason, felt it necessary to leave separately through the restaurant's kitchen. Last month, they were looking very affectionate in SoHo's Sub-Mercer lounge. According to witnesses, the pair disappeared into a private room for about 20 minutes while a guard stood outside the door. Diaz had a big hug for Mr. Combs at the Beverly Hills party he threw last month to celebrate his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. More telling was their intimacy at Prince's house last Friday. Sly Stallone, John Legend, Eddie Murphy, Babyface and other guests were riveted by the 2 1/2-hour backyard concert the funkster gave to launch his book, "21 Days." But Diaz and Diddy seemed only to have eyes for each other. During the show, they laughed and held hands. At ...

Catcher Mike Piazza officially RETIRED today... What a sad day today is. Former New York Mets Catcher, Mike Piazza, has officially retired from the game of baseball. Piazza is the sole reason I became a Mets Fan. I grew up following players (Juan Gone, Junior, The Big Hurt etc) and Mike Piazza grew to be my favorite, so it was only natural that I followed him to the New York Mets. Piazza had the sweetest swing I have ever seen. One crack and you knew immediately where the ball was headed. Piazza's farewell to the fan bases he played for: "I can?t say goodbye without thanking the fans. I can?t recall a time in my career where I didn?t feel embraced by all of you. Los Angeles, San Diego, Oakland and Miami - whether it was at home or on the road, you were all so supportive over the years. But I have to say that my time with the Mets wouldn?t have been the same without the greatest fans in the world. One of the hardest moments of my career, was walking off the field at Shea Stadium an...

Off Topic: If you had to pick a Next Gen Video Game System
2008-05-14 13:00:00
For all the gamers out there, which Next Gen Video Game System would you purchase if you could between the XBox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii? Obviously the Wii graphically doesnt belong in this discussion (and it takes a knock for not having Grand Theft Auto IV as a Gaming option), but I'm just curious as to which system folks would purchase out of the three listed above. I recently sold my PS2 on EBay, a shame i know, that means NO more YouTube Madden Videos for me. I thought I was over video game systems, but I'm not and don't think I ever will be or want to be. I hate spending the time playing something so unproductive, but its ridiculously fun. Funny enough, I've only played the Nintendo Wii and its insanely addictive. Grand Theft Auto IV did get a 10.0 rating so the Wii is pretty much on the outside looking in at this point. What's your opinion on these systems? Poll Which system would you buy if you could? XBo...

Sunday Morning Off-Topic: Mark Twain and Mothers Day Edition!
2008-05-11 12:00:00
It's Sunday Morning, that means it's time for a little off-topic reading.  I've arbitrarily decided that until football season beings, Sunday's will be where we take a part of our day and read some examples of fantastic writing.  This week's off-topic features the King of American Writing, Mark Twain.  This piece, "On the Decay of the Art of Lying", was submitted to a writing contest for a 30 dollar cash prize.  It did not win.  But it's a fantastic piece of satire, and worth a few moments of your Sunday. Also, and please may Big Cat Country not be your reminder, but it's Mothers Day today.  This website and my passion for football wouldn't exist were it not for my Mother's persistence.  I may not understand her obsession with Oakland's Rob Ryan but she introduced me to football.  So on this day of days, I like to say thanks! Mark Twain, below the fold:   Mark Twain: On the Decay of the Art of Lying Observe, I do n...

Sunday Morning Off-Topic Reading
2008-05-04 20:35:00
For your Sunday reading pleasure, I've decided to mix it up a bit.  You see, there's been a little bit of drama recently about bloggers and sports journalism , a meta discussion that I've avoided here at Big Cat Country.  Frankly, there's nothing more boring than bloggers talking about blogging, and I refuse to put you through it.  One of the names that popped up in the discussion is legendary sports writer and author W.C. Heinz.  The  article I've posted here is called "Death of a Racehorse", which is one of the most fantastic pieces of writing ever published. It's also very appropriate, with the events of the Kentucky Derby and the ill-fated Eight Belles. It's below the fold, it's less than 1,000 words, and it's a stunningly beautiful piece of literature. Death of a Racehorse: By W.C. Heinz They were going to the post for the sixth race at Jamaica, two year olds, some making their first starts, to go five and a half furlongs for the purse o...

So you know times are bad when the Harvard Business Review starts asking potential entrepreneurs to check their health insurance before cutting the corporate cord: Take the case of my brother who was 55 and a former CEO when he took early retirement. To his great chagrin he discovered that he couldn’t find health insurance. A millionaire several times over, Mike had the money to pay whatever premiums a health insurance company might ask. The problem: he had pre-existent conditions – diabetes and high blood pressure. No one in the state of New Hampshire would touch him.Millionaires without health insurance. Byrd's Health Remains a Topic on Capitol Hill
2008-04-09 14:02:00
The Hill reports that the regular Tuesday meeting of top Senate Democrats focused this week on "the idea of shifting the workload of ailing Appropriations Committee Chairman Robert Byrd.""The 90-year-old West Virginia Democrat has been present for several recent votes, but earlier this year was in and out of the hospital for short stays," the article said. "Many participants of the closed-door meeting wouldn?t discuss the details, noting the sensitivity of Byrd?s situation."As noted at the time, The Politico reported in December that "A group of Senate Democrats has begun quietly exploring ways to replace the venerable Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) as chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee."More recent observations on Byrd's condition are here, here and here.

Tonight I’ll be taking the stage at the Agora debate in the Guardian newsroom. Here’s my contribution (as Adrian Monk) to Education Guardian in support of the motion: Renaissance Man is dead. Education should be about training in subjects that will boost the economy. What do we know about the world since the Renaissance? Almost every single forward movement in advancing the position of humankind has come from science, technology and business.James Watt developed the steam engine that powered the Industrial Revolution in a workshop at Glasgow University. His partnership with Matthew Boulton made it a commercial success.Where will the advances that take us forward in this century come from? Will they emerge from study of the nineteenth century novel, or being able to translate the Hesiod, or from theology (I’m open to taking bets)? You know the answer, and yet we continue to subsidise 30% of our undergraduates to study these subjects in universities. Are we nuts? We’re producing ...

Currently reading Frederick Crews’ Follies of the Wise. If I needed a new motto for this blog it might come from him: “we do not have things to say. We acquire them in the process of working on definite problems that catch our attention.”This is from his intro to Follies: My aim in telling this story is not to scoff at apologetics for otherworldly belief, though I do regard them as uniformly feeble, but to call attention to a clash between two intellectual currents. One is scientific empiricism, which, for better or worse, has yielded all of the mechanical novelties that continue to reshape our world and consciousness. We know, of course, that science can be twisted to greedy and warlike ends. At any given moment, moreover, it may be pursuing a phantom, such as phlogiston or the ether or, conceivably, an eleven-dimensional superstring, that is every bit as fugitive as the Holy Ghost. But science possesses a key advantage. It is, at its core, not a body of correct or incorrect ide...
