The Misadventures Of Google+. Topic For A New Bestseller?
2011-11-21 11:20:00 Its been just five months since Google+ has launched and in this time Google’s social networking/media hope has been lauded, criticized, hailed as the savior from Facebook and called ‘Utterly Confusing’. So it is safe to say that Google+ has had a rocky first five months. Facebook is the king of social networking at present, with over 800 million users, yet there is a sense of Facebook fatigue hanging heavy around the web. Mark Zuckerberg has made quite a few sudden changes to a product, which was performing brilliantly. Is it due to the launch of Google+? Or is it Mr. Zuckerberg at his eccentric best? Will it affect Facebook adversely? Well we have to wait and watch. Google+ has managed to attract an impressive number of users on the platform, given the short time period that it has been operational for. Social media experts think that Google+ has what it takes to trump Facebook in its own game. Users do not yet seem to share the same confidence. Yes, a number of them have j...

The big topic is keeping the deals together
2011-05-18 13:36:00 Every so often I check in with Mike Stern, the manager of Koenig & Strey's Evanston office, for a recap of what's trending in the Evanston real estate market. Mike is a 25-year veteran of Chicago real estate who always has solid information and a good feel for the pulse of the market. He's a good go-to guy because he doesn't push an agenda or overstate a case. "Keeping deals together behind the scenes is the big topic these days," according to Mike. "We've sometimes run into 'cold feet' buyer issues after a deal is signed. Appraisals have been a continuing problem, as have home inspections." "The buyers have done a lot of their own research," he continued. "They're...
Seabrook a hot topic?
2011-02-24 07:00:00 Apparently Brent Seabrook's name is out there. Whether the Blackhawks want it out there or not. Some teams are waiting for the Hawks to make him available even at the deadline. Stan Bowman however, has said he is working on an extension, even with their sketchy cap situation. Bowman almost has to get a deal done before the season ends, when Seabrook becomes a restricted free agent. The Hawks can't afford another offer sheet situation like Niklas Hjalmarsson.Adam Jahns has the Hawks as buyers for sure, and still looking for blue-line help. "We're looking to keep our group together and complement it and not change things up," GM Stan Bowman said....
Boystown Trending Topic: The gay vote for mayor
2011-02-11 00:37:00 (Photos by John Lendman for RedEye)Chicago's mayoral candidates have spent months courting the city's gay vote, meeting with citizens in and around Boystown to drum up support. On Wednesday, a coalition of 32 Chicago lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organizations including Equality Illinois and the Howard Brown Health Center, hosted a sold-out candidate forum at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. Carol Moseley Braun, Miguel del Valle, Rahm Emanuel and several other candidates answered questions regarding LGBT issues in front of more than 170 people. Gery Chico, notably, was unable to speak at the forum due to an earlier scheduled commitment to the Chicago Defender forum. However, Chico appeared at the LGBT forum before it began to meet those in attendance....
Trending Topic: Where to Bear down in Wrigleyville
2011-01-13 16:00:00 (Barry Brecheisen / Metromix) Pegging down a good sports bar to watch the Bears playoffs in Wrigleyville can be like choosing a brew from a five-page beer menu. Sometimes there can be too many choices.Luckily, Metromix readers voted for their favorite neighborhood bar for watching the highly anticipated Bears playoff games, amped up for bye week hibernation to come to an end. Topping that list is Kirkwood Bar & Grill, a year-round local sports feeding frenzy at Sheffield and Oakdale avenues. Come gameday, if you're looking for a pep rally atmosphere, this is the place to be, locals and staff say. You can expect to see groups of fans in Indianapolis and Green Bay jerseys, and of course Bears wear at Kirkwood,...
Trending Topic: Where will Boystown spend the Bears playoffs games?
2011-01-13 16:00:00 (Top two photos courtesy of North End, bottom two courtesy of Rocks Lakeview) Robert Rupp has been coming to North End to watch the Chicago Bears play for more than seven years. But to him, it's more than just his neighborhood bar around the corner. "It's a sports bar like any on Clark Street, but for us," Rupp says.As one of the few gay sports bars around, North End at Halsted and Grace streets draws a pretty loyal crowd for any bar, regulars and staff tell RedEye. And for many, it's the perfect place to catch the upcoming Bears playoff games."It's a great low-key bar, and the Bears games here are incredible," says Rupp, 40. "This is the place to be,...
Boystown Trending Topic: LGBT Chicago news has come a long way
2011-01-07 16:00:00 (Photo by John Lendman for RedEye)About 35 years ago, you'd have been hard-pressed to find many gay- or lesbian-focused publications -- and coverage in national media was rarely positive, media historians say. But times have changed. By 2011, Chicago's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender news coverage had expanded in coverage and even developed some competition. In 2010, one publication folded, but others expanded, with one going national. When the LGBT weekly Chicago Free Press went under in May, many community publications took it as an opportunity to expand news coverage and absorb new readers. Gay Chicago Magazine took on former Free Press staffers to further localize news coverage, while LGBT community site ChicagoPride.com and LGBT weekly Windy City Times recently launched expansions...

The gods must have pretty awesome view from up there.

2010-11-24 23:00:00 (Illustrations courtesy of The Legacy Project)There are some ideas that never go away, burning a hole in your brain, just waiting to be actualized. Victor Salvo says his idea started in 1987, when he was in Washington, D.C., as the Chicago chairperson for the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. It was the height of the AIDS crisis and Salvo, with his colleagues, was presenting a quilt with patches memorializing those who passed away from HIV/AIDS, in what he recalled as a sort of "living history taking place."That Oct. 11 day, 23 years ago, was also the first Coming Out Day, and focused on recognizing the accomplishments of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people throughout history. Then it struck...
Trending Topic: Wrigley renovations too pricey?
2010-11-24 23:00:00 (Illustrations by the Tribune and The Cubs)Another ambitious project could change the way residents see Wrigleyville, but this time it would mean alterations to the Friendly Confines itself. The Cubs and their owners, the Ricketts family, want to boost some life into the 96-year-old iconic ball park -- about $400 million worth of life. The idea is to preserve the second-oldest ball park in the country while adding some additional bells and whistles: A "Cubs Alley" pedestrian thoroughfare with Cubs-themed shops and restaurants is slated for the stadium's west side. A "triangle building" development will be erected east of Clark Street with parking, retail, concessions, dining and possibly a hotel. A couple of lounge-y rooftop patios will crown the stadium's south and...
Race remains hot topic despite Obama presidency
2010-10-17 20:34:00 Race remains hot topic despite Obama presidency The election of the first black president in U.S. history was supposed to usher in a post-racial era in America. But a series of controversies since then, from the White House “Beer Summit” to the conflicts between the tea party and NAACP, shows that race is still a hot-button issue. “As a society, clearly we’re not over race,” said Hettie V. Williams, lecturer in the African American History Department at Monmouth University. Unlike the racial disturbances of the 1960s and ’70s, the race-related controversies of the past two years have, for the most part, played out over the airwaves and across the blogosphere, not on the streets of America’s cities. Full Story Here: Race remains hot topic despite Obama presidency Race DOES remain a HOT TOPIC…for the RACE BAITERS. 2010-09-23 16:00:00 Photos by Alysse Dalessandro/RedEyeWrigleyville- may be known for its bar scene, but it's also home to plenty of stores, restaurants and offices. To encourage residents to stay in the neighborhood, local groups have come up with programs to help residents get their shop on -- while making sure they stay in town to do it. The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce runs the Shop Lakeview Program, which gives shoppers a three-month period to spend $500 in at least five area stores to earn a $50 gift card. The program, which requires you to keep your receipts to cash in, started off as seasonal but now runs year-round. On the eastern side of Wrigleyville, the Central Lakeview Merchants Association has introduced a...
Trending Topic: Does Boystown want a gay mayor?
2010-09-23 16:00:00 Photo by Nancy Stone/Chicago Tribune Since Mayor Richard M. Daley announced on September 7 that he would not seek re-election, speculation has abounded about who might replace him. Among the dozens of potential candidates was Ald. Tom Tunney, 44th Ward, who represents Boystown. Tunney told the Tribune on September 22 that the only signatures he's collecting are for re-election as alderman. Later that day, Max Bever, community outreach director in the 44th Ward, confirmed to RedEye that the alderman has ruled out the possibility of running for mayor."He's honored that people are considering him, but with the high turnover in city council, he'd like to focus on stability on the lakefront," Bever said. Bever also confirmed that Tunney met with...

Many in the area identify strongly with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues or are, at the very least, LGBT friendly. Candice Hart, vice chair of Illinois Gender Advocates, said Boystown was the place she felt most comfortable when she first came out as transgender 12 years ago. "At the time, I looked more male than female," Hart, 60, said. "I was going to gay bars, and they accepted me. My experiences here have been very positive."But day-to-day realities vary for the transgender men and women in...

With the much-anticipated concert taking place this weekend, RedEye hit the streets to gauge the neighborhood's excitement. Unlike some of our bloggers, we found some around town are less than thrilled."There's a Dave Matthews Band concert at Wrigley?" said Jim Sukaris, 25, when asked whether or not he was attending the performance. Other Wrigleyville residents were already devising a weekend escape plan."I'm really not a fan. I heard it was two days -- that's the worst," said Jennifer Campagna, 24. "I'll be somewhere on the other side of the city." Dave Sendre, 30,...

With students from Chicago-area schools hitting the books instead of the bars, you might think Boystown's nightlife-centric Halsted Street would see less traffic. Just last Thursday, Kroell, 27, who now lives in New York City, was signing copies of his Playgirl cover for donors at a Center on Halsted fundraiser at Spacio Spa. And two weeks before that he was a guest judge for "Sobriety Has Talent," a competition hosted at treatment center Hazelden's Chicago branch. But before his high-profile modeling career, Kroell had been community organizing and doing charity work throughout Boystown. In 2003,...

"It's black, white, young, old, men, women--a little bit of everybody."But some spectators say the three-hour parade has evolved into something too commercial or too political and recent restrictions make it less interactive, such as the ban on getting on or off floats, the ban on tossing promotional items and confetti, and last year's installation of barricades along Halsted Street and Broadway during the event.Pfeiffer's response is that only 18 of the 250 entries in the parade are corporations, many...

On April 26, the White Sox and Cubs announced BP would step up as the first corporate sponsor of their rivalry games. That was just a few days after an oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico and the subsequent leak that has polluted the coast, angered the president and turned much of the country against the oil company that was responsible. So as the Cubs and Sox clashed at Wrigley last weekend for their first three games of this year's series, we wondered if Wrigleyville's residents care about the political and social debates surrounding the team at the center of their neighborhood--and the BP Crosstown...

That just comes with the territory of a young, lively neighborhood, according locals. Sharing space with a community of bars, restaurants and fervent Cubs fans might as well be in the fine print of the central Lakeview area's leases. Aside from fans celebrating at Clark and Addison after Cubs night games, the pub crawl scene (from the previous week's '80s crawl to the Mustache Bash) brings in animated visitors and a big collegiate mass. And with the BP Crosstown Cup this week, the swarms of flocking Chicagoans will only grow. For...

The sound of laughter and wine glasses clinking punctuate all the activity. Inspired, we trekked through the gayborhood and asked folks, "What gets you outside"?...

More on Sports Specialization: Still A Hot Topic in Today's Sports Cul
2010-05-25 05:11:00 It is common practice for me to routinely surf the internet for articles regarding sports and youth sports issues. The title of this blog certainly supports that activity, and diligence in this provides much food for thought as I contemplate what important issues to address or expand on. In May of 2008, I came across two articles on two different websites that discuss their viewpoint on sports specialization, a topic I most assuredly have an interest in.

I'm convinced that whole phase in the 90's where everyone had the same haircut was because Jennifer Aniston has a good noggin. I mean look at it - high at the crown, minimal forehead. And my baby's head? Perfection. So we buy her hats and plenty of 'em.Just yesterday our friend Joanna knitted up a springy yellow half-hat. Essay topic of the day: Inter-frater PP
2009-09-21 04:17:00 A Wolfeboro, N.H teacher asked this question: "If you knocked your brother down, would you urinate in his mouth..?" It really irks me when teachers oversimplify complicated moral problems. Without the context of the situation, it's virtually impossible to answer in either the affirmative or negative. Assuming, however, that the knocking-down was intentional and for good reason- say as recompense for an uninvited reception of bodily effluence- then the action would be just- an emanation for an emanation, to paraphrase an ancient legal code. Excepting tit-for-tat retaliation, urination should be used rarely, if at all. Not to say that it should be ruled out a priori- the threat of being peed-on has a deterrent effect. Neither, however, should one use such a messy option without first escalating gradually through less severe options like the "noogie," the "pantsing," and "wet willy." Urination is always wrong in casual horseplay. I think that the pee-ee is entitled to adequa...

Youtube Launches ‘Trending Topic’ – Inspired By Twitter
2009-09-18 11:27:00 I’m not being cynical here, but it is my opinion that most popular tech blogs are quite funny sometimes when it comes to covering news. When Susan Boyle makes headlines with her singing at a talent show, it is not just her singing that makes news, but her being very much discussed on the social media that makes another piece of news. Same goes for any event that goes viral in the social media, the most recent being the Kayne West episode. So, what these tech blogs cover is how Kayne is the most trending topic on Twitter or how Susan Boyle’s video got so many million views on Youtube. In keeping up with this, Youtube has announced the launch of a feature which will make news of such trending topics all the more easier. Inspired by Twitter, Youtube’s ‘Trending Topic’ now displays the words that are getting the most hits of late. Presently, the feature is located inside the Browse page. However, according to the announcement on their blog, this trending t...

important family debate topic: Coke
2009-08-11 04:59:00 Yesterday, the Kid, Hubs and I were running errands and picking on each other spending quality time together and began to discuss the following: Which sip is the best one of an icy, cold glass of Coke? Yes, we are that deep. The Hubs told the Kid it was the last one, the one that has been lingering with the ice the longest. I cannot believe he’s teasing her again, I thought to myself. Next, he’ll tell her how much fun it is to paint the fence. Then I realized he was serious. The last sip? Furrealz?? Who is this person I married?? First off, I said, don’t you mean the first sip, since that’s the one with the most rum in it? (ba-da-ching!) But, even if it is rum-free, still, it is the first sip that’s the best. Right? All bubbly and fresh, not flat and watery and tasteless. You’re with me on this, right? Copyright © 2009 Let the dog in!. This Feed is for personal non-commercial use only.
