Maryland, Virginia tornadoes confirmed in damage assessments
2008-06-07 00:46:00
The National Weather Service confirmed that at least six tornadoes struck Maryland and northern Virginia during Wednesday's massive storm outbreak. WRC/4 reports that National Weather Service meteorologists evaluated the Chesapeake Beach, Md. storm in Calvert County as an EF-0, the weakest form of tornado. The aerial pictures demonstrated if nothing else that even the weakest of tornadoes can cause significant damage.Northern Virginia's multiple damage patterns were caused at least in part by tornadoes as well. EF-1 tornadoes caused damage in Stafford, Culpeper and Fauquier counties. EF-1 is the next highest level of tornado severity after EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.Much of the damage that occurred in the Washington, D.C. area though was the result of straight line winds. Gusts of 70 to 80 mph over a wide geographic area caused over 300,000 customers to lose electrical service including the DCAbloob homestead. A few tens of thousands are still without power, an increasing c...

A Deadly Year For Tornadoes Predicted
2008-06-03 17:00:00
Tornadoes have already killed 100 people this year. It’s severe weather season and it’s always good to be alert to tornadoes and other deadly weather events that can strike anywhere tornadoes can form. This year could be a deadly year for tornadoes with already 100 people killed by the violent storms, according to CBS 4 Denver. There have already been 1200 tornadoes this year, reports the AP. The fearsome nature of tornadoes has been caught on tape many times this year. A recent tornado ripping through a bank was caught by security cameras. Watching the video shows the devastating power of tornadoes and underscores the need to always seek shelter when tornado warnings and watches are issued. Nobody wants to be caught in the deadly winds of a tornado while it is ripping through a house or business. Tornadoes hit Virginia
2008-04-29 04:29:00
SUFFOLK, Va. - Three tornadoes ripped through Virginia on Monday, with one hop-scotching across the southeastern part of the state and leaving behind a 25-mile trail of gutted homes, tossed cars and more than 200 injured residents.Residents of some of the hardest hit neighborhoods in this town outside Norfolk were forced to evacuate their homes, with buses taking them to nearby shelters. Police closed roads, steering people away from streets with downed power lines.Downed trees and power lines covered the streets in a section of the city. A vending machine was tilted on its side, leaning up against a pile of rubble that had been the general store in a small shopping district."It's just a bunch of broken power poles, telephone lines and sad faces," said Richard Allbright, who works for a tree removal service in Driver and had been out for hours trying to clear the roads.Gov. Cloud Cult: Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes)
2008-04-09 03:13:00
Cloud Cult: Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes)Craig Minowa and company have been self-releasing albums for almost a decade and a half. They first jumped onto the radio scene with 2004's Aurora Borealis. That success just seemed to grow with Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus which received critical acclaim. Last years The Meaning of 8 saw the band record their first music video. With all this success, Cloud Cult has never compromised their ethics or "sold out".Cloud Cult's music is a blend of symphonic pop and indie rock, their sound is somewhere in between the Eels and Modest Mouse.Fans of Cloud Cult know their M.O. In 2002, lead singer and songwriter Craig Minowa's two-year-old son passed away. Since that time, he has release six albums. The song writing usually deals with death. Although that might sound incredibly depressing Minowa has the chops to not overwhelm the listener by project his loss on them.Although "No One Said It Would Be Easy" and "Everybod...

Tornadoes in the Mid-South

I am a student at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. My school was devastated by the tornadoes on Tuesday, but I am safe and well as are all the students at Union. By the grace of God no one was killed when the tornado ripped through the dorms with 1200 students there. It is a miracle for our community, that even though many have lost everything they are alive. I am sorry for the loss of life and property in the rest of our state. God bless everyone affected by these storms. ShareThis

The storms crumpled trucks on highways like toys and trapped and killed people in splintered houses, factories and shops. Tornadoes in U.S. South kill at least 54 people

By Pat Harris NASHVILLE, Tenn. In Tennessee's Sumner County, northeast of Nashville, a tornado sucked an 11-month-old boy and his mother from their home. They were found later in a field. The child survived in good condition, but his mother was dead. Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen said he was shocked by the intensity and scope of a storm that "just literally sat on the ground in wide areas" along a track that was as much as 400 miles (643 km) wide. At Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Ferina Ferrington told a local TV reporter: "My husband and I got into the bathtub with our little girl. I remember flying through the air. It was very scary. Then it was real quiet and we saw our house was gone. Our baby was unhurt." President George W. Bus...

Super Tuesday and Tornadoes?
2008-02-06 19:43:00
by Nicole McIntyre Let's just say that yesterday was "exciting" on a variety of levels:1. I voted in my first Presidential primary. It was pretty cool to know that I was a part of Super Tuesday. 2. I had my first experience with an electronic voting machine. I know it's probably irrational, but are they really all that safe? I guess it's better than "hanging chads."3. I had my first voting experience with a toddler. He thought he was pretty impressive wearing his "I voted" sticker. He also blew kisses to the poll workers and tried to "hide" from them.4. I was slightly annoyed that at no point in my voting process was my ID asked for. I even had to double check my voter registration card to make sure I was signing in right and that did not raise up any red flags to anyone. I guess if you are in your late 20's, white, female, and toting a toddler they really aren't worried about your voter fraud potential.5. I was so involved in the process that I spent all night going between th...
Made it Through the Tornadoes
2008-02-06 19:26:00
Last night was one of the worst tornado nights we've had in years. Something about the darkness makes any tornado night much more frightening than the same weather during the day, though. I waited up for quite a while to see what was going to happen, but ended up going to bed figuring that if one got close the sirens would wake me up. They certainly did. There were two tornadoes in town and a few others in the surrounding counties by about 3:30 a.m. The worst point was when the local news zeroed in it's street map on the "danger zone." My subdivision was on it. One of the tornadoes ended up passing about a mile from us at one point. At the time it was closest, that eerie calm descended. If you've ever had a tornado close by, you may know what I'm talking about. As long as the rain is coming down, the tornado is usually not that close. But, as soon as the rain stops and it looks like nature is trying to lure you outside with false promises, you're screwed. We had a few minutes o...

No Tornadoes to Afghanistan

According to an inquiry of Forsa 77 per cent of all Federal citizens is against an employment of German Tornadoes in Afghanistan - and nevertheless the cabinet decides on the heads of humans away. By democracy I understand something else. Our representatives of the people became long Volkszertretern and do not shear themselves not the bean around humans, around the people. The interserums of Mr. Bush from the USA our politicians long became more important than security in the own country. “Berlin is not extortable! ” - sounds beautiful and good and sounds vollmundig from the mouth of Mr. Schäuble. One considers however that our politicians have also their Bodyguards and bodyguard - which are however unprotected people in the roads of the city however. Another Casualty Of Iraq: A Small Kansas Town

Governor Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kansas) admitted today the cleanup after the devastating tornado that wiped Greensburg off the face of the earth is slowed because the Kansas National Guard is short in personnel and equipment because of the war in Iraq.Kansas should have 70%-80% of the equipment needed to send the National Guard to respond to events such as this one, but currently Kansas only had about 40% according to the Governor. It's sad that we here in the United States cannot attend to our own people and help out our own when they face disaster, because all of our energy and equipment is getting blown up in Iraq.Where are the priorities?
