2007-11-29 01:41:00 The Denver Post is reporting that the Rockies have re-signed catcher Yorvit Torrealba and middle reliever Matt Herges. They're currently in town for physicals. It's believed that Torrealba will sign for a reasonable $7MM over two years with an option for 2010. Contrary to previous reports, he did not fail a physical with the Mets earlier this month. Wonder why they pulled out of that one. It sounds like the Rox got Herges on a one-year deal, maybe for slightly more than the original $2MM they offered. These signings aren't spectacular. They're both low-risk, low-upside deals. If Torrealba is only making $3.5MM a year it will be OK to allow Chris Iannetta to work his way into the starting role. showad();

2007-11-22 17:26:00 Troy E. Renck has the Rockies hot stove buzz, as usual. The Rockies are close with reliever Matt Herges, but other teams remain in the mix. It's known that Herges wants a two-year deal and the Brewers are interested. The Rockies are also making progress on a deal with catcher Yorvit Torrealba. The Mets saw something they didn't like in Torrealba, so he's come back to the Rockies to talk. Renck says the Rockies had previously offered two years and $7MM with a vesting option for 2010 (seems reasonable). Now they might be able to get him without guaranteeing that third year. Renck says Kaz Matsui may sign with the Cubs or Astros next week. Matsui has priced himself out of the Rockies' range. showad();

2007-11-18 17:20:00 Just browsing the web this morning: Troy Renck of the Denver Post speculates that the Mets deal with Yorvit Torrealba might have fallen apart because of the catcher's shoulder issues. This is based on Torrealba having missed time in 2006 with two shoulder injuries. The deal fell apart when it was thought to be complete, with only the physical remaining. The Rockies have also inquired on Matt Clement. Renck mentions the Diamondbacks as also having interest in the 33-year-old righty, adding them to the aforementioned Padres and Royals. Clement has thrown just 65.1 innings in the past two years. The Yankees have identified Francisco Cordero as their Plan B closer, should talks with Mariano Rivera fall apart. It should be moot, though, as Rivera is expected to sign this week. Cordero has not made any significant strides in talks with the Brewers. 2007-11-17 22:59:00 After both sides had agreed to terms and all that was left was a physical, the Torrealba signing has fallen apart. Whatever occurred it sounds like the deal is completely dead. In my opinion this is a very frustrating development. It's not that I was a huge fan of the signing but I was glad the position was filled early and didn't cost the team players in a trade. Now Omar will have to try and scrabble to find another catcher, taking time away from finding a second baseman or pitchers. It seems that the bridge with Lo Duca is burnt and the other free agent catchers aren't very attractive, meaning the team will have to trade for a catcher. The players that will be used in a trade could have been used to obtain a pitcher. Jason Jennings may have the most potential and best stuff of the entire group. The former ace of the Colorado Rockies is coming off the worse year of his career, in which he was riddled with injuries. He only made 19 starts, going 2-9 with a 6.45 ERA. But the year before was considered a break out year for Jennings, he compiled a record of 9-13 with an ERA of 3.78 and walked 85 while striking out 142. Keeping in mind that he was pitching his home games in Colorado and the Rockies weren't very good that year, the numbers aside from the record are pretty good. Jennings made 32 starts in 2006, in which he pitched 212 innings and his catcher was Torrealba. A pitcher coming off injuries might want to play in a situation where he's comfortable by working with a catcher he's familiar with. I'm sure it would be appealing for him to work with Peterson wh...

So far the Marlins are leaning toward Torrealba, but would have to beat the Rockies' two-year, $6MM offer. Mets, Marlins Interested In Torrealba
2007-10-30 18:52:00 According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Mets and Marlins have interest in free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba. The Rockies would like to bring him back, but otherwise they'll look at Paul Lo Duca or Michael Barrett. The 29 year-old Torrealba hit .255/.323/.376 in 396 ABs this year. Typically he hits for a touch more power. Meanwhile the average NL catcher hit .257/.318/.394 in 2007, so Torrealba's bat is tolerable. Torrealba was lousy at throwing out baserunners this year, checking in at just 19.7% caught stealing. Only Jason Kendall and Johnny Estrada were worse among qualifiers. Oddly Torrealba threw out 40.4% of baserunners in 2006 and 35.7% the year before. The reason for the decline is most likely a strained shoulder that lingered into the season. Torrealba earned $1.075MM in '07, and he might be looking for $3MM or more in '08. Regarding the Marlins, they're also interested in Barrett, Kendall, and Ramon Castro if they ...
