The extent of victory made all the difference between the first and the second world wars. After the first war, the Entente did not enter German capital, devastate the country, or change the government and its constitution. The enemy was humiliated and left to rearm. It did rearm and stroke back with vengeance in twenty years. French and the British occupied Egypt with meager efforts, established local administration, and ruled the country with little opposition. Egypt is unlike Germany in that its people lack the culture of moderation (other Arabs are still more wild), but we also have the example of Japan which turned its educational system around after the war, taught international coexistence to the children, and opened itself to the world. How total should be the total war?
2006-10-13 20:03:03 Israel need not occupy Cairo or Egypt for that matter. We don?t want kibbutzim near Cairo. In fact, we don?t want those socialist abominations in Israel, too. We can draw lessons from the American examples in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and similarly unfortunate places. Israel would demilitarize Egypt, force on it peaceable constitution, territorial concessions, and frighten it for decades to come with total destruction. Americans did it in Germany and Japan. We would have peace in the Middle East. Yes, peace under the gun, but peace nonetheless. The world wouldn?t be gifted by the Egyptian nuclear weapons in the hands of Islamic Brotherhood. A win-win situation, even perhaps for the common Egyptians. We won?t occupy Cairo to trade it for Sinai. Land for peace does not work, as any appeasement. That principle, however, is misspelled. Many nations, Arabs included, do not care about peace. They do not trade land for peace. They, however, trade land for assurance of no further encroachment. ...
