MN BASS Federation Nation Tournament of Champions - Pokegama
2009-09-16 15:28:00
I got back into Grand Rapids right before the pairings meeting after taking two days to work and skipping a day of practice.  Gopher Bassmasters, my club, was the host club this year and ran our annual raffle and raised about $4,300 for local 2nd Harvest Food Bank & 4h-Club.  My drew boat 44, my partner was Nick Madison from Golden Hook for day 1.  We were greeted by a 3 hour fog delay on day 1.The first area we hit was a stretch of docks, it yielded one 12" fish for me and a nice 2lb fish for Nick out of a patch of reeds.  We then hit two weedline areas and I caught a couple more small largemouth.  I then hit a few other docks, where i was able to get a nice 3lb largemouth and then another good keeper on weightless ring frys.  It was finally good to get a couple good fish in the box.The next area was rock and weed area with a good drop off.  After a few casts I hooked and landed a big smallie on a Baby Fork Creature.  That did not yield a...

Knife Lake - Gopher Bassmasters Tournament - July 12, 2009
2009-07-17 21:21:00
I was able to get up to Knife Lake on Friday night for about 3 hours to scout the lake for my tournament that was on Sunday, prior to that I had never been on the lake.  I did catch a few fish, but nothing bigger then about 2lbs, learned my way around the lake anyways.  Because of some last minute adjustments, I ended up fishing alone in this tournament and there for was last boat to take off.  So I decided to just start by the landing.  After working the shallows with buzzbaits, frogs, jigs and a chatterbait, I decided to toss my Carolina Rig out from one of the small points, it did not take long to put a nice solid keeper in the boat on a ring fry.  I ended up catching one more fish on the C-Rig and another on a Chompers Twin Tail Grub  on a TackleSmith Tungsten Bronzeback Football head jig.  Not too long after that, I picked up two smaller keepers on a chart/white Fishing Magician VooDoo.  Fished a few docks along there and got nothing on t...
Rush Lakes - Gopher Bassmasters Tournament - July 11, 2009
2009-07-17 21:21:00
Saturday morning came very early this weekend, as several Gopher members stayed up in Hinckley the night before and participated in the town festival on Friday night.  I actually was retying most of my rods as my partner Rick was parking the truck and others launched.  We were boat #2 and boat #1 actually went to the same area on East Rush that we did.  We set down about 75 yards apart and worked a weedline towards each other.  I made sure I had my buoy on my deck, so if we ran into the school that I hoped was there, we would be able to stay on them.  (More on Buoys here)  Sure enough a few pitches with my 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten jig and I had a nice fish hooked and in the boat, as I fought it, I kicked the buoy in with my foot and it was game on.  I was able to boat 6 fish on my jig, lost 3, and my partner got 2 and lost 1.  After that the fish stopped biting, we tried a few other baits, but then left.On the next spot, I cracked a nice fish o...

Mississippi River - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #2 - June 28, 200
2009-06-30 09:11:00
Yesterday was my 2nd Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament, I was able to get two days of practice in for this event.  It sure would be nice to get some more time so I could expand my water and areas, but there is only so much time.  Based on my practice, I had one really strong area that I felt good about and a couple back up areas, plus some stuff that I had fished in that past that I felt could produce a few bites in a pinch.I drew boat #15 and a heck of a nice co-angler named Sam.  We arrived in my starting area and were the only boat there, I shut down a little short and used the trolling motor to get into position and as we approached I saw a surface swirl.  All ready with my Yellow Magic Popper in hand, I started firing casts towards the area the fish were boiling and they started biting pretty fast and furious.  A mixture of smallies and largemouths were biting, as well as some white bass and a walleye.  Once the topwater fizzled I switched to a ...
New Tournament Jerseys
2009-06-26 21:09:00
Well I finally got around to designing and ordering some new tournament jerseys for this year.  After shopping around a bit, I decided to go with Boombah for this year's jerseys, they are quite competitive when it comes to pricing.  Here is where we landed based on digitial mock ups. Here are a few shots from my phone camera of the actual jerseys, from design to getting shirts was less then 2 weeks. And a closer detail of the frontI already wore one during a 90 degree day with no wind for practice, very comfortable, should be great for this weekend's Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament on the river!RichLindgren.com Ric-h's Bassin' Forum Bass Fishing Tackle Blog
Last Weekend Club Tournament Recaps
2009-06-19 21:04:00
This past weekend, I had two Gopher Bassmasters club tournaments on Big & LIttle Green Lakes on Saturday, and Sunday we fished the Chisago/Lindstrom chain.  I was able to briefly practice the weekend before on Green. My partner Art & I started in a little shallow water pocket that had lots of pads, wood & other grass.  We were both able to get a limit from this area by a little after 8am.  I caught 2 of my better sized fish on a frog and on Kizew Gill Super K swim jig, the rest of the limit was filled with a tube & a weightless Green Pumpkin Ring Fry.  Art caught all 5 of his fish on a 8" Green Pumpkin Fork Worm on a 1/8oz texas rig.  The rest of the day, we pecked around docks, bluegill beds and other shallow cover, where I was able to cull 3 times, twice on the Ring Fry and once on a 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten Jig.  My final weight was 14.32lbs with a big fish of 3.82lbs.  It was good enough for 2nd place.  Art had around 7lbs an...
Bellagio Slot Tournament, January 2009
2009-06-03 08:54:00
Here's the food pics from Bellagio's invitational slot tournament back in January, 2009. It was Super Bowl day, and there were big screen TVs so you could watch the Super Bowl, also there was a marching band, and food and drinks, of course. Bellagio tournaments always have pretty good food, although this tournament, the food wasn't that great. There was good stuff, but not everything was good. Like desserts. That was so disappointing. They used to serve higher quality desserts.CLICK HERE for pics from Bellagio slot tournament in 2008.CLICK HERE for pics from Bellagio slot tournament in 2007.CLICK HERE for pics from Bellagio slot tournament in 2006. Mississippi River - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #1 - May 31, 2009
2009-06-02 03:00:00
Based on my practice, I realized that winning this event would take some good fortune and the bass in my areas to grow, but I thought if I fished hard and fished clean I could put together a respectable finish and have chance to cash a check.   My practice had not been stellar, but I had found a couple of areas holding fish both on Lake Pepin and down in the top of Wabasha backwaters; plus a few back up spots if I needed a fish near Red Wing.  This tournament was a little unique, because I had never fished an event that launched out of Everts Resort on the north end of Pool 4 before. After running south through the Wisconsin channel, I started on a rocky area of Lake Pepin, my partner had one fish on that looked to be a keeper on a spinnerbait, other then that we caught several close but short fish on finesse jigs and Fork Craws.  From there I went to my second spot on Pepin, my partner caught 1 on his spinnerbait and another on his jig.  I ended up...
Mississippi River - Pool 2 - Club Tournament #1 - May 17, 2009
2009-05-21 07:56:00
Sunday was my first club tournament of this year on Pool 2 of the Mississippi River.  Because this is a special regulation continuous catch & release body of water, our tournament is a paper tournament, where we measure the length of the fish, have our partners verify the length and then convert to pounds back at the landing. My partner John Haynes and I were able to get out prefishing, so we have a pretty good idea of where we wanted to start and fish during the tournament.  The first area we started was a small pocket not very far off the main river.  Two other boats also started in and around this cut, John managed to catch 2 largemouth pretty quickly on a 3/8oz Sunfish Tru-Tungsten jig, and I launched a 12" bass over the boat on the hookset, which came off.  After that, the bite slowed.  We continued to fish this cut and fish behind other anglers and as the sun came up, we picked up a few fish, my first fish was a 12" smallmouth on 3/8oz PB&J Tru-...
Mississippi River Pool 2 Redemption - Club Tournament Practice
2009-05-06 21:08:00
A complete 180 occurred this past Saturday on Pool 2.  In short, John Haynes & I were each able to bag a nice limit on the very same body of water that skunked me the weekend before.  I personally believe it had to do with location, we fished many of the same lures & techniques, conditions were pretty similar but the scenery had changed. We started off fishing some rocks on the mouth of a backwater, where John quickly tempted some nice smallmouth with a 3/8oz Sunfish Tru-Tungsten Jig.  Those same fish, showed no interest in my Reaction Innovations Method Crank that I was trying to make work.  When John caught a nice chunky largemouth on that same jig further back in a backwater pocket, I picked up my Black Neon 3" Yum Tube and quickly caught a 12" keeper.  A few pitches later I swung a 19" sow into John's lap while he was re-tying his texas rig.Nice 19" Pool 2 Bass! After proving to myself that the tube would work, I switched to a green pumpkin chatte...

Four Queens slot tournament, Jan. 2009
2009-03-14 10:42:00
Food from slot tournament at Four Queens in January 2009. We've been to many slot tournaments, but this was our first time at a Four Queens slot tournament. It was a little bit different from other casinos' tournaments. This Four Queens tournament was only 5 minutes for each session, and there were only 10 slot machines, and there were no chairs, so you had to stand up while you're playing. Also people who were at the tournament were mostly older people, like average 50 years old, I think. Usually slot tournaments are 10-15 minutes each session, and there are usually about 60 machines, and of course there are chairs at each machine, so you can sit while you're playing. This was the food during the tournament. The Pensblog Wins the Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament
2009-03-08 21:09:00
Congratulations to The Pensblog for winning the (first?) Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament by defeating Mondesi?s House 67.9%-32.1% in the championship. I do want to address some of the comments that took place during the championship round. Certainly not everyone has to like everyone else?s blog or the comments on the blogs. However, there is no reason to disparage the blogs themselves simply because of the amount of time the bloggers spend writing for your enjoyment and to express their own thoughts. As for the two finalists, The Pensblog is the most influential blog in Pittsburgh and has the most passionate following. WWGRD was everywhere last year, and each Penguins game post on The Pensblog receives hundreds of comments. Meanwhile, Mondesi?s House covers all Pittsburgh sports better than any other Pittsburgh blog. The Terrible Towel pictures and videos featured prior to February?s Super Bowl were incredible and demonstrated the amount of MH readers there are nationw...
Saturday - State Tournament !
2009-03-06 20:25:00
So Saturday started off with the JV boys game first! They played a hard game but lost by four points! It was SO sad!:(After the JV lost we were determined that the varsity was bringing home 1st!!! It was a very nerve wreaking game! The other team really expected to beat us, but we pulled it off! We were behind by 10 then came back to get ahead by 20, when they came back in the second half! It ended up going in to double over time!!! Our guys battled it out and at the end stood high by only four points!! At the sound of the buzzer we ran the court jumping and screaming!! It was SO much fun!:D Here are some pictures, thanks again to Sarah H.The JV team second in state!Congratulations:Sean,Cala-b,Reid,Mark,Cameron,Emmanuel,Lo-gan,Jordan,Daniel,Micah and Coach Matt! Our starting line up- praying.Tip off!Yes, that other guy is grabbing my brother's wrist! Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament Championship
2009-03-04 14:00:00
Well, we made it to the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Championship! If you had to guess who would make the finals before the tournament started, I think you would predict The Pens Blog and Mondesi's House. These blogs are likely the most read and most influential of all the Pittsburgh sports blogs. Both The Pens Blog and Mondesi's House are regularly linked to by national and international sports blogs and certainly earned their places in the finals based on the outstanding posts and information they provide and have provided over the years. The Pens Blog reached the finals on the strength of a 66.8%-33.2% victory over Behind the Steel Curtain. BSC dominated its division but ran into a seemingly unstoappable force. In the other semi-final, Mondesi's House and Pittsburgh Sports and Mini Ponies were close over the first day of voting, but Mondesi's House pulled away with a huge Tuesday afternoon winning 56.6% to 43.4%. Congratulations to both Behind the Steel Curtain and PSAMP f...

Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament ? Final Four
2009-03-02 14:00:00
Welcome to the Final Four of the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! I think this may be the first tournament ever where all the #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. I?m actually a little disappointed that there were no Cinderellas, but the people have cast their ballots and the top seeds earned their place in the Final Four. Before the voting begins, let?s look back at the Elite Eight.Behind the Steel Curtain had a relatively easy run in the Sammy Khalifa division until this round where they held off the final all-Pirate blog in the tournament Where Have You Gone Andy Van Slyke by a 53.3%-46.7% margin. Behind the Steel Curtain now faces The Pens Blog who handled Empty Netters by earning three of every four votes in this match-up. I really thought that this would be much closer, but I guess not. Based on how this tournament has gone so far, The Pens Blog appears to be the favorite to win it all. With Pitt as the #1 basketball team in the country last week, it makes sense th...

Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament - Elite Eight
2009-02-25 14:00:00
Welcome to the Elite Eight of the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! I don?t know about you, but I am really enjoying this tournament. Although I have heard of all of the blogs prior to the tournament, this has been the first time I have regularly read some of them. I don?t think Pittsburgh sports fans realize how lucky we are to have such in depth coverage of the Steelers, Penguins, Pirates and Pitt. If you haven?t done so already, check out each of the Pittsburgh sports blogs in the tournament as well as those linked on the sidebar. The Sweet 16 round was terrific. #1 seeds Behind the Steel Curtain and The Pens Blog rolled to easy victories as Nice Pick Cowher awoke the sleeping giant. The other top seeds, Pittsburgh Sports and Mini Ponies (PSAMP) and Mondesi?s House, withheld big comeback attempts by Faceoff Factor and Bucs Dugout respectively. I don?t think we can have any closer match-ups than Pitt Blather vs. The Confluence (51%-49%) and Blog ?n? Gold vs. PensBurg...

Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament - Sweet 16
2009-02-23 14:00:00
Welcome to the Sweet 16 round of the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! Before we proceed with the voting, I want to address a comment from the first round. An anonymous commenter wrote, "voting is VERY easily rigged. Anyone can vote an unlimited number of times by changing a certain setting in your browser." Personally, I?m not smart enough to figure out how to change browser settings, but I?m sure that many of you can. I can?t believe that I even need to write this, but there is no need to cheat and vote multiple times. We?re not Montreal fans trying to get their players into the NHL All-Star Game. This is a silly blog contest in an attempt to highlight some of the best Pittsburgh sports blogs. The winner gets absolutely nothing. The idea of this is to be fun, so let?s keep it that way. Thank you.A brief recap of the first round: the top seeds in the Demetreus Gore, Jock Callander and Rich Erenberg divisions all won. The only upsets occurred in the always turbulent...
PIttsburgh Sports Blog Tournament - Round 1
2009-02-19 15:01:00
Welcome to the first ever Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! As I mentioned on Monday, my main motivation behind doing this is to try to create a thorough list of the best blogs that cover and discuss Pittsburgh sports. I also hope that this to be something fun and that no one takes things too seriously. The first round voting starts now (assuming that the survey software works OK) and ends on Friday, February 20 at 8:00pm Eastern time. If nothing else, enjoy the logo!A few items that I didn't address when I posted the 32-blog bracket yesterday. The seedings were partially based on Ballhype rankings and partially on my perspective on the blogs' overall popularity. I also created four divisions named for four of my favorite Pittsburgh sports athletes: Sammy Khalifa, Jock Callander, Demetreus Gore and Rich Erenberg.Let the voting begin! (One vote per person, please. We don't want this to be like the NHL All-Star voting.)Sammy Khalifa Division1. Behind the Steel Curtain v...

Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament Bracket
2009-02-18 22:13:00
Here is the bracket for the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament:Unless you have 20/10 vision, you probably need to click on the bracket to see the match-ups. The bracket itself isn't pretty, but all I have is Microsoft Word. I'm sure that any 8th grader could make a nicer bracket.Let me apologize if I missed your blog. I tried to pick the best 31 Pittsburgh sports-related blogs out there (plus my blog) and I?m sure that I missed a few. As I mentioned on Monday, my motivation is to try to create a compendium of the best blogs that cover and discuss Pittsburgh sports. I also included a set of ground rules of what blogs would be included and excluded. If the polling software works correctly, I hope to begin the first round of voting tomorrow (Thursday).Feel free to discuss the match-ups and the toughest/easiest divisions.
Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament
2009-02-16 15:06:00
Welcome to the first ever (that I know of) Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament! My main motivation behind doing this is to try to create a thorough list of the best blogs that cover and discuss Pittsburgh sports. I think there is a special Pittsburgh sports blog community out there, but not everyone knows about everyone else. I hope to change that and perhaps even encourage some additional collaboration between some very talented writers. I also want this to be something fun and not some type of fight to end scenario from a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie (Sudden Death, perhaps). A few ground rules:1. The blog must be in existence for at least one year. There are a lot of bloggers out there who get burned out quickly, so this recognizes the folks who have persevered. This is not to discourage the new bloggers out there. Blogs such as Three River Sports, Steelers Today and Pesonen and The Pens are already must-reads and should make the cut if I decide to have another tournamen...
