Good News, Bad News: COUGAR TOWN, THE MENTALIST & ALCATRAZ
2012-01-17 21:19:00 Good News: After months of anticipation and speculation, ABC has finally awarded COUGAR TOWN with a spot on its schedule. Bad News: Well, aside from the February 14th Valentine’s Day premiere that all but guarantees much of the show’s core 18-49 demographic will be otherwise occupied for the evening and a completely incompatible lead-in that is LAST MAN STANDING, we’re really going to miss a possibly inebriated Bill Lawrence angrily lash out at ABC’s treatment of COUGAR TOWN via his delightfully honest @vdoozer Twitter handle. [Source] Good News: CBS has given the green light to ELEMENTARY, which is being billed as a modern-day take on SHERLOCK HOLMES. Bad News: Not to be confused with CBS’ current modern day take on the infamous British detective that is THE MENTALIST. [Source] Good News: Last night’s series premiere of ALCATRAZ netted Fox its highest numbers for a new drama series since 2009′s LIE TO ME. Bad News: For the increasingly ten...

We Attempt to Convince COUGAR TOWN Creator Bill Lawrence to Follow in Louis
2012-01-12 22:39:00 A TV Addict walks into a bar with a singular purpose. That purpose? To ask beleaguered COUGAR TOWN co-creator Bill Lawrence what it’s going to take for him to cast off the shackles of Network Television following countless years spent watching his beloved shows get treated like second class citizens. “Back when I was doing SCRUBS I used to whine about it being mistreated,” admitted Lawrence during his recent self-funded unofficial COUGAR TOWN cocktail party held at the Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena California. “And then my dad once said, ‘The show’s been on for seven f–king years so far and I think you should shut up, it’s time to stop complaining’.” In other words, despite our best effort to convince Lawrence to take a page from Louis C.K.’s playbook that recently saw the popular comedian harness the power of his own loyal following to self-publish an online comedy concert to the tune...

When the Kings came to town
2011-11-14 03:16:00 England 1:0 SpainWembley Stadium, LondonWembley was full, sold on the dream of the king's touch, as the world's No.1 soccer nation Spain dropped by for an evening.A strange pre-match atmosphere, as the usual patriotic fantasy rang increasingly hollow: No-one expected England to win and most were hoping for a defeat short of embarrassing.A 90,000 defending army expected its fortress to be breached, and that it would only be a matter of when, not if the Spanish Armada would get revenge for 1588.They had their full team out: Xavi, Iniesta and David Villa were facing Phil Jones, Joleon Lescott and Danny Welbeck - ouch!In the first five minutes the red sea washed over Wembley as expected, Spain marinating possession and donning the mantle of the home side as they took their game confidently to their raw hosts. England were second best, pinned back in their own half, unable to string multiple passes together or create moments of danger. This was no ordinary home game.Spain enjoyed the (...

Chinpracha House in Phuket Town
2011-11-04 01:41:00 Phuket Town is full of gems. Much as I love looking at beaches and seaviews, over the years it's the culture and history of Phuket which has fascinated me more. I guess most visitors don't realise that Phuket has a history, and think of Phuket as just a holiday island that didn't have much going on until tourism arrived 30 or so years ago. I also never thought about it for the first few years I was living here, mainly because I was too busy diving. Nowadays, I admit that I'd rather go for a walk in old Phuket Town than on the beach. Always something new to find and it's a great area for photography. There are loads of old buildings - much of the old town was built about 100 years ago in the days before tourism when Phuket was making it's money from the huge tin mining industry. The mining attracted workers and traders from China - many Chinese moved to Phuket during the 19th century and some of them got rich from mining. Many of the "big" families in Phuket trace their family ...

Yellow Door Restaurant in Phuket Town
2011-07-17 10:19:00 A couple of weeks ago (June 26th to be exact) was our 10th wedding anniversary, so we were heading out for dinner. We asked the kids where they'd like to eat and they chose Dairy Hut - a place we've been going to regularly for years in Phuket Town just round the corner from the Bangok Phuket international hospital. It was still a bit early so we drove past Dairy Hut and headed towards Rang Hill, thinking maybe to veto the kids suggestion and eat instead at Tunk Ka Cafe. The road heading up Rang Hill from this side is not well known and is much narrower than the usual route up Rang Hill which starts just north of the old town. BUT before we reached the hill, my wife said "Ooh, whats that?" - a small restaurant with a yellow door, it looked interesting .... The signs are all in Thai, the restaurant is called "???????????" - Yellow Door. We had a nosy inside, checked the menu, the prices looked very reasonable, so we chose the Yellow Door for our anniversary meal! Note that the photo...

Kopitiam Restaurant (Phuket Town)
2011-07-04 10:43:00 We took a little walk around in Old Phuket Town last month, mainly looking to buy a guitar for our daughter, but also just to enjoy the old town with it's old buildings and interesting little shops. Thalang Road is the center of the old town, and over the last couple of years especially now that all the ugly overhead wires have been hidden, the area has become very pleasant and more popular with tourists, especially Thai tourists - if you walk down Thalang road or the little side street called Soi Romanee you'll always see young Thai snapping photos of each other in front of old doorways! Lots of small cafes and restaurants have opened on and around Thalang road over the last few years and there are also some older establishments. On this walk we decided to try out Kopitiam on Thalang Road. There was a table full of Phuket locals sitting outside, always a good sign for good food...Kopitiam coffee shops are found commonly in Malaysia and Singapore - the word comes from Kopi (Malay ...

Walking in Old Phuket Town
2011-06-09 16:22:00 Officially, Phuket Town was upgraded to "Phuket City" a few years ago, but that was just a bureaucratic way of getting more money from central government. Phuket Town is not a city to me and everybody says Phuket Town. I mean, sure it's a big town and has got more developed and urbanised, especially in the outskirts. Since 1999 when I first arrived in Phuket, there's been a lot of building, lots of housing projects, lots of new roads and shopping centers, lots of money being spent. I remember the first time I drove from Patong Beach to the Tesco Lotus store on the edge of town. A ride through the jungle on a narrow 2 lane road. There was no Central mall, no Jungceylon mall, no Big C, no Index, no Makro, no HomeWorks, no 4 lane roads. The development has come thick and fast. I am not going to argue about whether this is good or bad, whether money is destroying values and culture. I think that the people of Phuket, including myself, are very happy to have all that! Most of the new de...

CHICAGO the Musical Paints the Town at Chicago's Oriental Theatre.
2011-06-08 22:18:00 CHICAGO and 'All That Jazz' delights Chicago audiences.Chicago, Wednesday, June 8, 2011. Hurry, if you want to see the touring production of CHICAGO at Chicago's Oriental Theatre--as it is here today and gone after Sunday, June 12. This quintessential hometown fav brings the razzle-dazzle decadence of Chicago's 1920's to life in a sophisticated, sexy new incarnation under the watchful eye of director Scott Faris and choreographer Gary Chryst. The CHICAGO revival retains the spirit of the Fosse original with the picture perfect recipe for commercial success--greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery--in tact. The original CHICAGO which opened to rave reviews on Broadway back in 1996, continues to wow audiences near and far. CHICAGO has become the longest-running musical revival...

An in-town Tudor in Clarendon Hills
2011-05-27 19:37:00 I'm a sucker for what I call the "jewel-box Tudor," a smaller-scale, beautifully-proportioned, finely-detailed older home in the English-Tudor style. And when I see one in a walkable in-town location I pay closer attention. Apparently not everyone shares my tastes. The 3-bedroom, 3-bath home pictured above at 4 North Prospect in Clarendon Hills has been on and off the market since July of 2009. It's currently listed for $649,993 after a recent price reduction. The home is across the street from the Clarendon Hills Public Library, close to the Metra station, and a block from District 181's Prospect Elementary School and Prospect Park. High-school students attend the vaunted Hinsdale Central High School. Chicago Bears fans need to be forewarned....
