UNESCO's World Heritage List~ Melaka & George Town, Malaysia
2008-09-28 04:28:00
Thanks for YTL group of Malaysia, I tend to have an opportunity visiting the Hotel Majestic Melaka for a day's trip with introduction from Donnovan, a historian. There are lots of activities you can enjoy in Melaka. to find out more...A piece of great news that Melaka had been listed in UNESCO's World Heritage list since July 2008. "Melaka and George Town, historic cities of the Straits of Malacca (Malaysia) have developed over 500 years of trading and cultural exchanges between East and West in the Straits of Malacca. The influences of Asia and Europe have endowed the towns with a specific multicultural heritage that is both tangible and intangible. With its government buildings, churches, squares and fortifications, Melaka demonstrates the early stages of this history originating in the 15th-century Malay sultanate and the Portuguese and Dutch periods beginning in the early 16th century. Featuring residential and commercial buildings, George Town represents the British era from ...

Group Dangles $50K for Jews Who Move to Alabama Town
2008-09-09 15:09:00
I found this article on Yahoo in which an organization is offering Jewish families as much as $50,000 to relocate to Dothan, Alabama. Just curious to see where Dothan is located, I discovered that the town of 58,000 is 204 miles from Atlanta; 107 miles from Tallahassee; 198 miles from Birmingham; and 268 miles from Jacksonville. Those seem like the biggest cities closest to Dothan. Anyway, the small Jewish community in Dothan is slowly dwindling so they are seeking young families to relocate. As the child of parents who grew up in small towns in Western Pennsylvania (hometown of Joe Namath) and Eastern Ohio (hometown of Lou Holtz), where the Jewish communities are now virtually non-existent, this story fascinates me. Not enough to make me consider moving from the Washington DC area to Dothan, but it is still intriguing. More information about the relocation project can be found at Blumberg Family Jewish Community Services of Dothan website.

There's a new LASIK in town...
2008-09-03 15:53:00
Want to know just how far LASIK technology has come and just how safe and dependable and effective it is? So did I, which is why I was reading an article the other about LASIK information.People, including me, are understandably a little gun-shy about having lasers shot into our eyes. But while a little caution is warranted -- it is surgery, and it's surgery on your eyes -- the fear may be overblown, at least according to what I read. The article said that iLasik Procedure-- the most modern form of LASIK -- uses two lasers. After mapping the individual's eye the first laser creates a "corneal flap," and the second laser, guided by the map, corrects your vision. So there's no blades anymore, and the lasers are all guided by computers and works superfast, but also much more safely; the procedure has been clinically proven to provide great safety and great visual results. How great? So great that the military and NASA use the technology -- one military evaluation said 95% of the pat...
The Best Planned Localities of Pakistan: Model Town Lahore
2008-09-03 04:44:00
Owias Mughal Today we are going to feature Model Town, Lahore as one of the best planned localities of Pakistan. In the past we?ve featured North Nazimabad, Karachi and Eight bazaars of Faisalabad in the same series.Model Town is designed in the shape of a square with major roads dividing it into blocks vertically, horizontally and diagonally. The area of Model Town is 5.9 square kilometers (or 1463 acres). The center of the square shape is a circular park. I don?t know the exact dimension but somewhere I?ve read the circumference of this circular park is more than 2km. Besides the obvious symmetry of design, what else has always attracted me to Model Town?s planning is its generous allotment for green areas and parks. Almost 19% of model town?s area is alloted to parks. Another 4% area is alloted to plant nurseries and playgrounds. This ratio of open area (23%) to residential area (56%) is hard to match in most of the well-planned localities of Pakistan. It is very clear from the f...

There Really is a Town Named Podunk
2008-08-31 01:00:00
And naturally it's in Vermont, world center of tiny towns and villages located in the middle of nowhere. I have John Hughes to thank for placing this photo on his wonderful Megapickles website. I cropped the sign photo from a much larger photo of a nice looking field in Podunk so click on the link to see a better image. I have written about his website several times previously because it one of my favorites and is superbly well done I think - a new photograph every day! To see a wonderful series of pastoral Vermont photos, check this month's photos. One great Vermont photograph after another. Google Maps says there are Podunks in CT, PA, and two in MI. Two! Whoever heard of two towns in the same state with the same name?Vermont's Podunk is located in the southern part of the state so if you are going to be in the Brattleboro, Bennington, Manchester area, you can take a nice drive in the country to see it. Don't forget to take your camera so you can have bragging rights that you...

New town, new look
2008-08-26 23:31:00
Bet you were wondering if I actually got to London did you? Yes, I did arrive safely and surprisingly not at all jet-lagged. I must attribute the lack of jet-lag to the many years of doing shift work, I've been able to throw my body clock out the window, and who needs one anyway it never did me any good.Aside from wondering where this blogger has been for the last couple of weeks, you will probably be wondering why this blog has been left in a state of limbo. Well to be frank, I haven't felt like blogging since I got to London. Actually I haven't felt like doing a lot of the things I am normally in the habit of doing back in Sydney. Take one for example of my many vices- sleeping in, well I haven't had a sleep in since I got here and it's not because I have a job to go to, it's because I instinctively get up at around 8 am every morning. It's quite peculiar seeing as snoozing until just before midday was my thing, it was the thing I was known for and the thing that made me, m...

Exploring Phuket Town
2008-08-05 15:58:00
I have always liked Phuket Town. Big enough to be interesting, small enough to be easily explored, busy but without crazy traffic (most of the traffic bypasses the town), lots of interesting areas, hills and views, parks, temples, local people who seem rather detached from the tourism that grips the main beaches. Phuket Town is where you can find local life a plenty, local festivals and a different nightlife scene to the tourist zones.I realised today there is a lot of information relating to Phuket Town on this blog, so this post is a way to tie it all together. I still want to blog more about the town - the big fresh market for example and the Chinese shrines, and one day I must "blog" a ride on the local buses that run from town all over the island. There are also loads of little specialist shops that you just can't find anywhere else. As I say, I like Phuket Town, always something new to find. Old Phuket TownA few square blocks in the center is where to find the best of th...

Man Threatenes To Kill All The Witches In Town

כ"ה תמוז התשס"חFaunus 27The Janesville, WI GazetteXtra reports today that in June a man had threatened to kill all the witches in town by detonating the town's watertower.Whitewater rumored to have witchesBy Ted SullivanJuly 28, 2008 - 11:21 a.mWhen a Whitewater man was arrested inside the city’s water tower in June, he said to the officer: “Do you believe in witches … I have to detonate this tower and kill all the witches.”Although he was charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors, the man can’t be accused of having a healthy curiosity. The water tower is believed to be a meeting place for witches, according to www.weirdus.com, and residents once called police on Halloween after seeing people in robes performing a candlelight ceremony next to the tower.According to the Web site, other rumors about Whitewater’s haunted history include: Four people have died after reading a secret book that is now kept locked in the university’s library. The cemeteries in ...
Let?s Hear Mellencamp Sing About This Town
2008-07-10 01:31:00
I decided to rework an old post today in light of the fact that I slammed a yo-yo off my head while trying yo-yo tricks at work and still have a slight headache. Fortunately everyone was on a conference call in my boss? office at the time of the accident mishap work related injury sustainment so nobody else noticed. By the same token, no one noticed I wasn?t in on the meeting either, so I?m choosing to take that as a very good sign that it wasn?t a conference call I was supposed to be on but missed because I was working?on my yo-yo tricks. Now, if you?ll please indulge me as I revisit a very, very goofy post about what I think would be utopia?I read recently that there was a small town listed for bid on E-Bay. Apparently it was just a few buildings but because it used to have a post office it can be considered a real deal town. That just goes to show you how much times have changed. Now days, if it has a Starbucks it can be considered a real town. How cool would it be to own a town?...
How To Get From Airport To Town In Beijing
2008-07-07 09:56:00
There are two kinds of people. Those who enjoy figuring out exactly how to get from one place to another and those who just want to know how best to get from one place to the other. David Feng of CNReviews is of the far rarer first category and he just did a post, entitled, "Beijing Capital International Airport Express(way) Guide (PEK)," setting forth how to "get from A to B — in this case, from Beijing Airport into “the Jing”, as they say." It is a very helpful post and since there will soon be a new express train (16-25 minutes from airport to CBD), I urge everyone who will be flying into Beijing Capital Airport to check it out.
Race in a 1970's California Beach Town
2008-07-01 02:53:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated July 12:When I grew up on the California beach in the 1970's, we had no White parts of town and Black parts of town. The whole place was White, with ethnics, Jews, NE Asians, Filipinos, Hispanics and mixed race folks scattered all about in fairly small numbers. It was a White culture in a White beach town, Huntington Beach. All of the non-Whites pretty much just assimilated to the White, or American, or White American culture of the city. There was one Black kid in the school and I was his friend! There was a small group of Hispanics (Chicanoized) with gangs, and the Chicano barrio mindset at the school and I was friends with them!I'm such a racist! From the early days yet! Snark. What I am trying to say is that for all intents and purposes, in Huntington Beach, race just did not exist at all. The non-Whites associated with Whites and ...

Small Town Patient Privileges
2008-06-22 11:45:00
Patients in a small town hospital like the one I work happen to be a totally different animal than the ones in the bigger cities. This idea I'm pretty sure Freadom over a Respiratory Therapy Cave and agree with me about because it seems that he is in this same small town hospital category. Some of the differences I have noticed are the types of reasons that people come in for are pretty simple compared to larger hospitals but there are exceptions also to this. There are the injuries that can be more local to the type of hospital you work in. For example where I work is a large farming community, we have had rolled over tractors, getting kicked by horses, falling off of barns, and my favorite the guy who him and a couple of buddies were drinking out in the cow barn and had a little to much and passed out and coded right in the middle of cows, down in the hay and manure. The EMT's said they were worried that the cows would kick them while they were working on the patient. This g...
Talk of the town
2008-06-19 06:18:00
Green Bay Packers news has recently centered around the possibility of the trading for Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor.General manager Ted Thompson has apparently been in contact with the Miami Dolphins about their interest in dealing the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year."Packers general manager Ted Thompson recently discussed Taylor with defensive coordinator Bob Sanders and defensive tackles coach Robert Nunn, who both coached Taylor with the Dolphins," reports Greg Bedard for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Both assistants have a fondness for Taylor and would undoubtedly be in favor of acquiring the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year."It's been an interesting offseason for Taylor and the Dolphins. After reports the contrary, the Dolphins have more recently said they're interested in having Taylor play for them in 2008. However, all signs point to the Dolphins having interest in trading him despite a recent press conference in which Taylor denied making trade ...

Suan Luang Park (Phuket Town)
2008-06-08 02:00:00
On a beautiful clear morning last week I decided to check out the big park on the west of Phuket Town called Suan Luang or King Rama IX park. I have driven past hundreds of times, but it's not that close to our house, so not really convenient for morning or evening walks (we normally go to the Bang Wad Reservoir). I don't think I realised the size of the park. After half an hours walking around there was still more to see. It's a gathering place for locals in the mornings and evenings when it's cool enough to take walks or go jogging or ride bicycles. There were also some people playing badminton and a football match going on at 8am!The main entrance to the park is on Chao Fa road, which heads out of Phuket town towards Chalong, but there are also a side entrances. Just inside the entrance is a large lake, and you can turn right or left and start walking/jogging...To the left is another small lake full of lotus flowers, and a maze of paths twisting and turning through the trees....
