2008-07-21 08:58:00 Many small towns and cities are acting like vigilantes and taking immigration matters into their own hands. Close to 90 municipalities in 27 states have drafted -- and a handful have enacted into law -- ordinances that prohibit landlords from renting to illegal immigrants. Penalties have also been approved, making a national policy issue a harsh economic reality for local tenants. Among the cities that have received national attention for enacting rental bans are Farmers Branch, Texas, Palm Bay, Fla., Valley Park, Mo., Riverside, N.J., and Hazleton, Pa. The rental bans essentially turn landlords into federal immigration officers. Because they are not provided any training or supervision in this area, these landlords may escalate tensions.

DataQuick identified 295 homes selling in beach cities’ ZIP codes last month, a 46% drop from a year ago. In these 17 ZIPs, last month’s median price change was off 11.9% vs. a year ago. It’s a sea change, so to speak, as last year beach towns enjoyed some breaks from housing’s rough seas. For all of 2007, there was an 18% drop in sales in beach cities’ ZIP codes vs. 30%-plus declines in the rest of the county. Eco-Towns A Great Place To Live
2008-03-12 20:38:00 The UK government is hoping to create eco-towns. Later in the spring of 2008, the government will announce a short list of 12-15 areas that will potentially host new eco-towns. From this list, as many as 10 towns will be constructed, focusing on renewable energy, zero-carbon buildings, and support for local communities and local businesses. While they haven’t decided where these towns will be yet, they have a great example in Cambourne already up and running. The Cambourne development in Cambridgeshire was built to be a user friendly town for both people and wildlife. There are plenty of cycle paths and walkways, and people who live there walk to school, to the grocery store and for pleasure. Plenty of people use these paths, but one of the biggest bonuses of having the extra space is the wildlife that has thrived and even grown in the area.
