Time to retire a Blackhawks tradition
2011-12-31 15:57:00 I’ve been meaning to write this blog for a couple of years now, and I’ve never done it. Maybe it’s because I participated, in earnest, so many times. Maybe it’s because when I see the Winged Wheel on the Detroit sweaters, I just want to blurt it out. Well, not anymore. It’s time to retire... Read more »
Debt relief: A time for forgiveness ? FT.com
2011-12-29 09:36:00 Yet there is a strange absence in the cacophony of demands. Almost no echo can be heard from a long tradition of economic protest movements, which, since the dawn of recorded history, have put one unambiguous demand at the top of their agenda: cancel the debts, redeem the debtors. According to David Graeber, an anthropologist ...

What's the Christmas tradition in your house?
2011-12-24 18:08:00 Every Christmas Eve we have our traditions in our family. We go to my mom’s for dinner. On the way home we pick up Dunkin Donuts for Christmas morning breakfast. And when we tuck the kids into bed, we read, The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore. I can’t remember the year we started... Read more »

A Christmas Eve Carol - When a Family Tradition Comes to an End
2010-12-18 14:11:00 For over fifty years my eighty-nine year old mother has been hosting a Christmas Eve party at her house, and while my husband and kids and I will be heading over there this year, we are the only ones who will. It seems this family tradition is coming to an end. &-nbsp; &n-bsp; I have fond memories of this party. One year, my Uncle Mike announced Santa had come early, leaving presents for the kids on the second floor landing of my grandmother's two-flat (we lived upstairs, grandma down.) I think I must have been around four years old, and for many years afterward, I couldn't understand why this year Santa had only shown up just that once. My cousins (mostly...
CTA's penny ride tradition continues on New Year's Eve
2010-12-16 14:00:00 It's not too early to be thinking about your New Year's Eve plans. In fact, at some of the more popular venues, it may be too late. Whatever you do, make sure the CTA is a part of your plans, and leave the car at home. After all, who wants to spend New Year's Day in jail on a DUI charge. The CTA is doing its thing again to make taking public transit the only way to go on New Year's Eve by offering penny fares again. For 25 years, the CTA has offered rides that night for just a penny. And really many operators just wave people on through. And it's not worth it for the CTA to reprogram train...
Remembering the Tradition of Our Lady of Guadalupe
2010-12-11 13:30:00 Tomorrow is a big day for the Mexican catholic comunity of the world. It is the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of all Mexicans. Growing up I remember her feast which begins on December 3rd and culminates on December 12. During this time there were services with a lot of music and folkloric dance. Churches are decorated with many colors to make the ambiance very inviting and exciting. I loved all the tradition that was involved. I remember anxiously awaiting these festivities and wanting to be part of them. I would start singing the songs related to these festivities weeks before the festivities began, and I still do. I was never an active participant of...

Apple Picking: Time-Honored Tradition Or Migrant Worker Training Camp?
2010-10-04 16:37:00 Editor in Chief Richard SnellA Letter From the EditorThe other day my sister and her stupid husband who I unlovingly call The Drunk ditched their children with me for the weekend so that they could go and--what else--get plastered in a God damn corn maze. This meant I had to take off of work to babysit, which as anyone can tell you is basically like telling my heart to stop beating. In other words, it's something that happens once a year. So there they were, little Maddow and Steven, both named after liberal, wingnut MSNBC whackjobs, you know, because my sister is a satanist. I would have just done the usual, which by that I mean lead them to the...
What Happened to Tradition: New Looks for Oktoberfest.
2010-09-30 17:00:00 The traditional dirndl, a full-skirted dress with a tight bodice and low neck, is undergoing some changes.A controversy is brewing among brat-lovers and beer-lovers at Oktoberfest celebrations around the world but especially in Munich, the home of the original Oktoberfest where tradition plays an important part in the Bavarian culture. It seems for many tradition is out the window as fest-goers are sporting the new looks. Women are wearing the men's traditional Lederhosen (leather trousers) and suspenders. Traditional drindls are under-going a fashion makeover. One designer being criticized for her trend-hungry designs is Lola Paltinger whose Lollipop line of Oktoberfest clothing is going for up $4000.00 a pop. On the other hand, others are loving the new look. See what...
Should Major League Baseball Stick With Tradition or Follow NFL Path?

Chicago Auto Show and McCormick Place: A Chicago Tradition of Patronage
2010-02-21 04:58:00 Chicago Auto Show & McCormick Place: A Chicago Tradition of Patronage Like most ex-Chicagoans, returning to the city for special events or to haunt the old neighborhood is fun. I have to admit, though, that since Mayor Daley and his gang of thieves have gotten even more greedy the last ten years or so, I find it one of the least desireable things to do. But when the Auto Show comes to town, my teen always gets me to take him with this year being no exception.

There is not much more to it. Really, for me its that simple. ...

A Tradition Of Giving Wedding Gifts
2009-01-31 06:05:00 A long standing tradition at weddings is a gift given by the bride and the groom. A popular say about gifts that its better to give than to receive might not be agreed to by a newly wedded couple who probably received some of the nicest gifts ever on their wedding day..The purpose of giving Wedding Gifts to wedding guests is to show your appreciation. A specially picked out Gift shows that you put thought and consideration into the gift. Including a personalized note with the gift or personalizing the gift itself to thank the person for whatever role he or she played in the wedding is certainly a nice touch that shows extremely good taste and thoughtfulness. The Wedding Gifts need not be very expensive so as to break your wedding budget but should be well thought out and consider the personal taste and likes and dislikes of the person on the receiving end of the gift. Also the packaging and presentation goes a long way in showing how much you care and appreciate the people in your l...

India?s Ancient Tradition of Respect For Elders Waylaid By Corrupt Elites
2009-01-20 00:25:00 India has an extraordinary respect for elders. When undistorted by other historic sociological factors, this is an admirable and powerfully cohesive social force. But in the areas of wealth and power it has also often become, over centuries, and in many ways, distorted into an oppression that renders India a land of both concealed and gaping wounds.

How to make writing love letters a tradition
2008-11-13 23:14:00 Okay, let?s get right to the point. You should write love letters because it will bring you (and your true love) many lifelong rewards. Besides, it?s not that hard, especially with my simple love letter WRITE-ing technique. But will you? Will you write a love letter today, another next week and another the week after? Are you willing to make writing love letters a new tradition?Don?t answer that. We'll come back to that question in a moment.Tra?di?tion - an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior. ~ WebsterAssuming Webster?s correct, you?ll engage in a pattern of thought, action or behavior if that thought, action or behavior is one of three things:Inherited.Established.Cu-stomary.We?re talking about writing love letters, so unless I?m completely in the dark, it?s not a custom ? at least here in the good old USA. So we can scratch that one off our list, because you?ll never get started if you wait for it to become customary. Now I?m going to make a...

Tradition
2008-10-26 15:11:00 It was the late 1950's, and Alabama had been waiting a while since their last win over their hated rivals, the University of Tennessee. Newly hired coach Paul W. Bryant, who 20 years prior had played an entire game on the defensive line with a broken leg had now just entered the locker room victorious with his boys, full of hope for the future. The tradition of losing was over. It was time for a new ritual.Cigars.For over 50 years now the winner of the Alabama-Tennessee tilt has celebrated in the locker room with cigars. Knowing so much better now than we do, the beneficient, the merciful NCAA recently banned the tradition. They claim that cigars represent "extra benefits" provided to players. It simply furthers the hypothesis that the NCAA is a red-tape monolith; soul-less and obese, that simply needs to die and probably will one day just as Enron under the weight of its own corruption. My own personal favorite victory moment came in the form of a photo. A jubilant Jay Barker (Sara...

Tradition, Daughters Of The Divine
2008-06-28 13:53:00 ?"? ???? ????"?Alban Heruin 26I dreamt.I had a baby girl somewhere down the (family) line. Her birth name is Gwenn. Gwenn is a Welsh name meaning blessed. An inner name within her birth name is Susy (???? literally means 'my horse' and mystically means to actively project the Creative Evolutionary Power of the Infinite into the finite).I nursed her in the dark.Susy has a talent no other human child has - she can dematerialize and rematerialize to teletransport herself from place to place in spacetime like on Star Trek. Only, unlike Star Trek, Susy doesn't need a transporter machine. She can actualize it naturally, at will.In the dream, Susy teletransported herself between points in the living room, rematerializing against the surface of my right leg. As she did this, I heard Susy in conversation with unheard unseen spiritual beings neither I nor anyone else in the room could see or hear. The language Susy spoke in simple song was Divine, primordial, pristine, exquisitely complex,...

A Family Tradition: Five Generations of Mezcaleros, Producers of Quality Me
2008-05-29 21:46:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Don Isaac recounts awaking at 4 am, then walking from his village of Matatlán, with his mule, to Oaxaca, arriving some 14 or 15 hours later ... just to buy a large cántaro, the traditional clay vessel then used for making and transporting mezcal. Often he would stop en route, at Santa María el Tule, for a drink of refreshing tejate before carrying on. Quenching his thirst, putting his feet up for a short while, and chatting with his favorite tejatero, made the arduous journey accepted custom, just part of the job. Eighty-eight-year-old Isaac Jiménez Arrazola has been producing mezcal in Matatlán all his life, just like his father and grandfather before him, his sons Enrique and Octavio, and now his grandchildren. The town has a colorful history and pride in being one of the oldest colonial settlements in the country, founded in 1525, only a few years after Cortés arrived in Mexico. But for literally hundreds of years the crowning glory of Mat...

Interpretation of dreams in Islamic Wisdom Tradition
2008-05-26 05:27:00 1.On many occasions Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace, after finishing the morning prayer in the mosque, he would face the companions and ask, "Who amongst you had a dream last night?" So if anyone had seen a dream he /she would narrate it. The Prophet would say: "Ma sha'a-llah" (God has willed it) and he would continue interpreting the dream. Thus dream interpretation, specially in group was practiced from the very time of the Prophet, which tradition is also carried and practiced in many sufi orders and has distinguished place in Islamic wisdom tradition.2.Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said, "Nothing is left of Prophethood except glad tidings." Those with him asked, "What are glad tidings?" He replied, "True dreams / visions."- Sahih Al-BukhariThe Prophet Muhammad mentioned that after he was gone prophecy would come only through true dreams. Based on this and other statements, early Muslims created what might be called a theology of dreams. Dreams were regarded as an impo...

When Piazza left, so did Dodger tradition, loyalty
2008-05-21 13:28:00 The great ones should not bid farewell via e-mail. Mike Piazza deserved to tip his cap and bask in the applause, secure in his place as one of the Dodgers' brightest stars. His place would have been between Tom Lasorda and Sandy Koufax, on opening day, at the end of the Dodgers' stirring parade of players through the decades. Dodger Stadium went nuts when Koufax appeared, and the place would have gone only slightly less berserk with Piazza in the house according to the Los Angeles Times.Formerr Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza to retire 'with no regrets'But he was not retired then, just unemployed. He never did find a job, and he retired Tuesday, at 39. No standing ovation, no public appearance, just a statement sent to media e-mailboxes. It is difficult, even to this day, to make peace with the idea that Piazza did not play out his career with the Dodgers, that they traded perhaps the greatest hitting catcher in history — and Lasorda's godson, no less. The Dodger Way was no m...

Movie Night: A New Tradition - Recipes: Olive Cheese Balls, Lentil Koftas,
2008-05-12 16:05:00 I am all about tradition. Even as a young child, I always enjoyed re-occuring events based on a date, an event, or time. I don’t know what it is about me that just loves a good ritualistic event. Maybe it’s the food. Most likely…Now that I am an adult and getting older and recently married, I have started thinking more about traditions, what they mean to me and what kinds of traditions I want to start for my own family. When we lived in Vermont, we used to have Roberto’s girls with us every other weekend, and I loved cooking special things when they were there. Especially in anticipation of Movie Night. We would rent a movie and then make fun food, perfect for watching and eating at the same time. Recently Roberto and I decided that we really need to bring back Movie Night ? even if only for us. A time to get our jammies on and eat fun foods. We have done this three times so far and it seems to be sticking. We have prepared some really fun finger foods and m...
