Did Orwell Say Anything About Trans-Fat In His Book?
2008-07-26 06:02:00 “Citizens of California, worry no more. We here to look after and take care of you. We know you’re unable to make your own decisions, so we will make them for you.” You have to read that in Schwarzenegger’s accent. I don’t know, but if I want to eat foods saturated in trans-fat isn’t that ...

Trans Fat Makes You Fat
2008-02-12 20:18:00 Robert Ferguson, M.S., C.N., Performance Nutritionist to the Boxing Elite and Founder of the Food Lovers Fat Loss System . Mr. Ferguson is the author of Conquering The Munchie Monster. Robert Ferguson-- &nb-sp; &nbs-p;  -; - &-nbsp; &n-bsp; We know that trans fats are unhealthy, but can even a little make you fat or slow down your desire to be lean? The answer is yes. Equal to all fats in calories, research has shown that trans fats can block protein synthesis - hindering your body from building lean muscle tissue. This also equates to a slowed metabolism.Unfortunately, there's not a lot of research on trans fats and their relationship to weight gain except for what was presented 3 years ago at the American Diabetes Association conference in Washington. Monkeys fed a diet high in trans fats gained much more weight that those...

Calgary?s Lower Trans Fat Restaurant Rules
2008-01-05 02:23:00 If you’re eating out in Calgary, the New Year just became a little bit healthier. Starting on New Year’s Day, Calgary became the first Canadian city to regulate the amount of trans fat in restaurant foods. Restaurants will be banned from using cooking oils that have a two percent or higher trans fat content; margarine and other spreads must also be below the two percent level. Trans fats have been linked to cardiovascular diease, clogged arteries, high cholesterol and obesity.

L.A. Launches Voluntary Anti Trans Fat Program
2007-11-17 03:07:00 Los Angeles County has launched a voluntary program to encourage restaurants to stop using trans fats. Participating restaurants will be able to display a decal in their windows declaring their trans fat-free status. Restaurants must pay $204 to apply for the program. Health inspectors will then make unannounced visits to the restaurants to make sure they are in compliance. To be accepted the establishments must not use any hydrogenated oils, shortening, or margarine. Participating restaurants will also be listed on lapublichealth.org. This voluntary program strikes me as much better than a citywide ban on trans fats. Banning things only leads to a backlash. Doing it this way lets consumers decide which restaurants to frequent based on whether they use trans fats and restaurants have a good incentive to make the change.

Less trans fat dunkin donuts
2007-08-27 13:57:00 For some reason, those words should not be used close together. However, according to the Associated Press, this company will announce today that they will be eliminating most trans fat from their menu. Now, I totally understand why this is happening. There is a lot of business and social pressure out there to do this. A lot of their competitors out there have already done this, or will be doing this. But.....Is there nothing else sacred than a trans fat dunkin donut? Sure, the taste will be pretty much the same. Sure, there is an obesity problem in this country and in some places around the world. But, c'mon! And, forget going to krispy creme....Dunkin' is ahead of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc., which has yet to roll out a zero gram trans fat doughnut but hopes to do so. Brian Little, a spokesman for the North Carolina-based chain, said, "We continue to work aggressively with outside supply partners, and our goal is to get to zero trans fatty acids while maintaining great Krispy Kre...

Trans fats: Are you getting more than you think?
2007-08-20 19:37:00 Trans fats have been getting a lot of media attention in the past several years, as food manufacturers are now required to list trans fat content on the label of their products. Why the concern?Because trans fats are used so extensively in processed snack foods such as baked goods, chips and crackers, many Americans are consuming way too much trans fats in their diets. You probably are aware that trans fats have been known as the "bad guys" because of their role in elevating LDL cholesterol. In fact, because of this and the effect this has on developing heart disease, the American Heart Association has recommended that a person's intake of trans fats not exceed 2gm per day.The law enacted last year requiring food companies to put the trans fat content of a food on its label no doubt has helped people monitor their trans fat intake. But, did you know that even though a food label states the product has 0gm of trans fat, legally it can contain as much as 0.5gm? Keep in m...

Trans fats a disgrace
2007-06-21 19:34:00 The Canadian government has left industry to regulate itself over trans fats, even though all the evidence proves that what amounts to an industrial convenience is slowly killing us. Should we avoid trans fats or saturated fat, good question. Well being one who lives with a diabetic (my wife) I thought I would try and dig a little deeper and find what clarify once and for all the trans fat debate. So just remember this is my take on the issues involved and nothing to do with medical advice per see. You see the medical experts seem to think they might have got it wrong (what you scream ... I feel a law suit coming on) No guys not this time just calm down a minute and take your lawyer off speed dial.

The Ban of Trans Fats
2007-05-07 01:46:00 What is trans fat? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states, "Trans fat is created during the manufacturing process by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil; this process is called hydrogenation. This is done to increase the shelf life and stabilize the flavor of foods that contain these fats. Trans fat can be found in vegetable shortenings, some margerines, crackers, cookies, snack foods and other foods made with or fried in partially hydrogenated oils."I live in the Long Island area of New York and recent events here in my home state have set off my personal food alarm bells. Last year, the mayor of New York City instituted a ban on food made with trans fats in restaurants; this was the first place in the United States to do such a thing. Over the last several months, Tom Suozzi, the Nassau County executive in Long Island, has called for a similar ban. In both instances, the consumption of food made with trans fats has be...

Burger King Dragging It?s Heals On Trans Fat Free Cooking
2007-02-12 15:46:07 Burger King is just latest in a slew of fast-food companies looking to jump on the latest buzz in healthy eating that is the removal of trans fats from our diets and replacing them with trans fat free products. Burger King have only recently started testing several trans fat-free cooking oils according to their vice president of marketing and product development John Schaufelberger (appropriate name I guess) and it is likely if the test’s prove positive they will be rolling the new oils out across the chain towards the end of 2008. (so not exactly rushing things are they?) John Schaulfelberger said when asked “We have been working for more than two years to identify trans fat-free cooking oils,” Our goal has been to identify trans fat-free oils that allow for the same great taste and texture quality. “We have done rigorous consumer testing and have narrowed our testing to a few oils that we’re very pleased with. Our move to in-restaurant testing is a s...

Whose Next In Banning Trans Fats?
2007-02-11 03:42:09 Philadelphia has become the second major city after New York to announce that they are to ban restaurants from being allowed to cook in trans fats. Trans fats are normally listed on food labels as ‘partially hydrogenated vegetable oil’, Doctors say that these fats can raise ‘bad’ cholesterol and lower ‘good’ cholesterol, which increases the chances of getting heart disease. We applaud NYC and Philly for taking this stance but our question is, do the bans go far enough? We don’t think so. New York’s ban starts on 1st July 07 and Philly’s is due to start on 1st September 07, but the bans will not be enforced by penalties and, prepackaged foods that are sold in stores and other eateries will not be included. What we need is someone in this country who has the spunk to take on the big food manufacturers and retailers and force them to stop killing us! To them it is all about profits, they really do not care about us,their consumers! ...

A Trans Fat Free Oil is French Fry Worthy!
2007-01-31 22:00:06 McDonald’s has found a trans-fat-free oil it deems worthy of its french fries, and plans to be using it for all its fried menu items by early 2008. While Wendy’s, Taco Bell and KFC each has announced a switch to new cooking oils free of heart-clogging trans fats, McDonald’s Corp. stood by, until now. After testing 18 varieties of oil in more than 50 blends during the last seven years, McDonald’s told the Tribune last week that it finally struck gold. It found suitable trans-fat-free oil that won’t change the taste or texture of its top-selling menu item: french fries. Already, McDonald’s says it is supplying about 1,200 of its American franchises with the new oil after starting to secretly test it last summer. By early 2008 in the U.S., the golden arches plans to be cooking all its fries, as well as chicken nuggets and other fried items, in the vegetable oil blend that doesn’t have the same unhealthful effects as trans fat. McDonald’s ...
Goodbye Trans fats!
2007-01-31 01:47:01 Trans fats are on their way out in New York City. That's right, legislation passed earlier this week will eliminate those "bad" fats (you know, the ones implicated in artery-clogging heart disease, stroke and even death) from all restaurant foods. This is just the beginning, as other cities are sure to follow suit. The law will also require those restaurants with calorie information available to post that information where customers can have access to it prior to ordering.Read the details from this USA Today article : http://www.usatoday.com/news/he-alth/200 ... -ban_x.htm

Zero Grams Trans Fat
2007-01-30 17:06:00 There are several loopholes in the law regarding trans fats. My favorite is the "what's" considered trans fat. Companies are now trying to disguise the trans fat as best as they can. They know many people are clueing in to reading labels and will be on the lookout for hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Just remember that BOTH are artificial and BOTH harden arteries. Hydrogenated OR Partially Hydrogenated. Saturated fat is NATURAL. Hydrogenated fat is UNNATURAL. Shortening is another word for trans fats, even if it says vegetable shortening. *wink*Now, Todd's favorite argument is the latest loophole in the law regarding the AMOUNT of trans fats in the food. A large number of companies were able to get legislation passed saying that if a SERVING has less than 0.5 grams of trans fats, the WHOLE PRODUCT can be labeled zero trans fats. Sadly, most people read the Nutritional Label rather than the Ingredients list and on the Nutritional Label, it says 0g trans fats. So of c...

Trans Fats ban in New York
2006-12-13 07:43:00 Since I am quite the nutrition freak, you'd think New York banning trans fats would be a good thing, right? Wrong... As much as I think trans fats are one of the most grotesque, artificial products on the planet, I still think this decision was wrong. It takes away your freedom of choice. If someone WANTS to eat trans fats, they should be allowed to do so. And it gives the restaurant the freedom to serve what they choose. If diners don't want trans fats in their food, they'll stop visiting that restaurant. Denny's is changing their menu already without government stepping in.On the rare occasion, I am in the mood for an instant powdered hot chocolate... which contains small amounts of trans fats, but it's ooooh, so yummy. Way yummier than the healthier versions. Ditto for microwave popcorn. I should have the RIGHT to consume these products. It's my choice. I would much rather see all restaurants put nutritional info somewhere easily accessible. And rather than jus...

Ban on Trans Fats? What Next?
2006-12-12 06:58:01 Tuesday the New York City Board of Health banned the use of trans fats in over 20,000 city restaurants and take-out places. Cities like Chicago are considering a similar ban and there is speculation that other major cities will soon follow in an effort to clean up America's eating habits.Yes, a wise person will wear a seat belt, avoid cigarettes, wear their bike helmet and not leave guns around where children can play with them but where in the Constitution does it guarantee us to be a nation free of idiots? Let me choose to go into a smoke-filled restaurant if I want to, let the restaurant choose if they want my business, let me decide whether I want to super-size those fries. Where's my personal responsibility? What next? Will New York pass a law requiring 30 minutes of exercise a day? How about mandatory cholesterol tests for school children? A law outlawing cell phones while driving? No wait, they're working on that.Maybe a better way to approach the mortality=danger ...
