Rs. 50,000 Cap On Mobile Transactions Removed By RBI: Brave Or Risky Move?
2011-12-26 07:56:00
In a bold new move, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed banks to give their customers flexibility to transact over Rs. 50,000 per day, using mobile banking. This move, timed perfectly to holiday season, should have positive impact on the 900 Million odd mobile users, many of whom use mobiles for monetary transactions. However, RBI has put the “risk” into Bank’s court, stating, though the the volume and value of mobile banking transactions is showing an uptrend, each bank should fix limit per transaction based on their own risk perception and with prior approval of its board members. Enhancing of limits started last year, when RBI raised it from 5000 to 50,000. Further good news is that, under the new system, a bank customer can easily transfer funds from his account to another using even a simple GPRS enabled low-end mobile phone through a pre-loaded software. The software should take care of authentication & linkage of accounts & transactions. RBI had placed a lo...

One of the things I cover early on in my course is the problem with traditional layered architecture driving people to create a business logic layer made up of a bunch of inter-related entities. I see this happening a lot, even though nowadays people are calling that bunch of inter-related entities a “domain model”. Let me ...

A Quickie: CVS and Jewel Transactions
2009-09-05 06:57:00
Tonight I was only going to stop by CVS -- and that only because I had one of those free chocolate coupons that was expiring today. (They've been giving them out every Friday, but only untli 11:59 p.m. EASTERN TIME, so too bad I just thought about it now at 11:26 p.m. Central.) But then at 8:30 I started making zucchini bread as our breakfast for tomorrow's block party. And then I noticed that the hubs had used up the eggs this morning cooking breakfast. The nerve, eh? Cooking breakfast for all of us while I lay there, unsuspecting, in bed. So off to CVS and Jewel I went, with the baby in the Bjorn and pushing a stroller only...
Two Moneymaking Transactions: Kraft and CVS
2009-08-22 05:21:00
Quiet around here today, I know. I took the kids to the Shedd Aquarium thanks to a friend with a membership, and it was exhausting. Although it was great to get in free (I get to reciprocate by taking the same friend and her daughter as our guests to the Brookfield Zoo), in two other aspects the outing was a frugal fail: 1. We didn't get there early enough to have a good chance at metered parking, and rather than pay double digits to park, I took 3 kids and a stroller on the El. It actually went very smoothly, but the travel time from door to door was 90 minutes each way, making for a pretty exhausting day. 2....

Opportunity Cost - Evaluating Your Transactions
2008-05-15 14:44:00
Opportunity cost, one of the most important topics in economics, hasn't gotten enough press time yet, and I'd like to take a few minutes to discuss its relevance when deciding who to drop, trade, and hold as the season marches on. Opportunity cost is defined as "the best alternative given up when making a decision." Economists also say that opportunity cost is the decision-making cost - if the alternatives are better than what you currently have, you will choose them, regardless of how much you have invested in the past (remember that past investments are sunk costs; economists say that these do not matter). As we reach mid-May, people are beginning to ask questions such as "Should I drop Andy Pettitte?", "What should I do about Chipper Jones?", or "Is it worth it to wait on Nick Swisher?". I'm going to take a minute to address the opportunity costs in a couple of these situations. The opportunity cost of holding a player such as Andy Pettitte will depend on your league. If you ca...

How to Enter Recurring Transactions
2008-04-29 16:46:00
A great time saver in Cougar Mountain is the ability to create Recurring transactions in most of the modules.  A recurring transaction is one that can be used over and over, without having to reenter the information each time.  Each of the modules are a little different in how they are set up, but basically it is a two step process - you first create the Recurring Template, and then you generate the actual transaction from the template. For instance; In General Ledger, you save the recurring transaction into a Recurring Batch. In Purchase Order, you can either create the Recurring PO directly as a template in the Options menu, or it can be created while entering a real transaction by clicking the “Recurring” checkbox. You can check the Help files in each module you are using to find out how to specifically create and use Recurring transactions.  Also there are Frequency Codes used with the recurring transaction, which allows you to run only the transactions y...
Singapore HDB resale transactions decline 6% in Q1
2008-04-26 08:22:00
Singapore HDB resale transactions decline 6% in Q1 Median COV was $21,000, compared to $22,000 in Q407 By EMILYN YAP TRANSACTIONS of resale HDB flats fell 6 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2007 to 6,360 in Q1 this year, against the backdrop of rising asking prices and high cash-over-valuation (COV) demands.     ‘With escalating resale prices and more and more COV transactions, we saw the resale market hit resistance in Q4 last year as HDB flat buyers do not have or are not willing to part with so much cash,’ said property agency ERA’s assistant vice-president Eugene Lim. ‘This resistance carried through to the first quarter this year.’ In Q4 2007, a total of 6,750 resale flats changed hands, which was itself a 13 per cent drop from Q3 2007. HDB’s resale price index rose 3.7 per cent in Q1 this year compared with Q4 2007. But this increase was lower than the 5.7 per cent quarter-on-quarter rise in Q4 2007. The median COV of all resale flats i...
