Urbanophile Blog Says Chicagoans Don't Want Better Transit
2009-08-31 10:25:00 Local urban-affairs blogger Aaron Renn says there's a very good reason Chicago doesn't have a world-class transit system: it doesn't want one. Recently on his The Urbanophile blog, Renn began a multi-part series examining why Chicago never seems to be able to get its act together to plan, build, and maintain innovative public-transit infrastructure the likes of which other world cities have enjoyed for years. Even though Chicagoans love to complain at length about the CTA, could it be we actually think the agency is doing a good-enough job?...

Rep. Kirk's double talk on transit spending; high-speed rail or fix ma
2009-07-28 13:00:00 The words of U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, has come back to bite him on the issues of stimulus fund spending and high-speed rail dollars. First, Kirk wrote a letter to the Highland Park News urging Pace to buy hybrid buses, rather than the regular gas eaters. He said Pace could use stimulus funding for the purchase. Problem is, Kirk had voted against the entire stimulus package. And, as the Pace board chair wrote in another letter to the editor:"Pace approached Congressman Kirk for five straight years requesting federal funding to add hybrid buses to our fleet, and each time the request was ignored. Had he taken action, it's very likely Pace would not...
Just how often does the CTA prez use public transit?
2009-07-23 13:00:00 Yesterday I wrote that I am fine with CTA President Richard Rodriguez choosing to spend time with his family over using the CTA for his daily commute.Rodriguez has five children under the age of 12. He works long hours. He has decided that he can spend some quality time with his oldest children in the morning while driving them to school. And Rodriguez said he still regularly takes the CTA.Now, I do think that the CTA president -- and others in top management -- should be using the CTA regularly. So I asked the CTA how often he does. Here's what I learned:Since he became president in March, Rodriguez has averaged more than 45 rides per month, said a CTA...
Hearing Dangers on Mass Transit
2009-07-10 14:57:00 Recent reports on NYC subways put average noise levels at 80 dB and sometimes as high as 102 dB on platforms. Clarence First & the Wegmans Proposal at Roll & Transit
2009-06-08 19:58:00 I have read the concerns of the Clarence First group and have the following comments: 1. The Clarence Master Plan shows the entirety of Transit Road as being "commercial" use. More specifically, at its drafting in 2000, the area bordering Transit Road is zoned as "major arterial". The area ...

Ford Makes Electric Transit Connect Official
2009-02-13 23:00:00 Back in December of last year, Ford began talking about an all electric delivery can they might put into production. Since then, not much has been said about the rumored van, until recently when Ford unveiled plan to use the existing Transit Connect platform to build their all electric delivery van.

The Mass Transit Myth

Tampa Transit: 10 years from now, 75 years ago
2008-08-02 08:24:00 The chatter over rail in Tampa has finally began to heat up (albeit a couple decades late) as the Trib's front page story earlier this week indicates, and even though it's hard to get excited about something that might take at least a decade to get rolling, if it gets rolling at all, I have to hand it to Iorio for her commitment to lighting a fire under the bureaucracy and generally being fed up with the lame feet dragging and lack of vision. The voter referendum is still a ways off, and there's a lot of "ifs" floating around this town, but it's not too early to speculate about how rail could affect Tampa and Seminole Heights in particular if Pam's "starter line" from USF to downtown to Westshore ever gets built. Will there be a Seminole Heights station? Where would the best location be? Here's some comments the mayor made recently in Creative Loafing about the development of such a rail stop:In the other cities I have visited, it is very clear that there is transit-oriented d...
Maria Ayerdi Has Pelli Clarke Pelli Design For SF Transit Center
2008-07-30 10:39:00 I have to admit I liked the Skidmore Owings and Merrill design, even if their architectural renderings imply they forgot Black folks existed. But the Pelli design focused on a "green" theme and addressed several pressing flow issues that the others did not. Now, Transbay Terminal Joint Powers Authority Executive Director Maria Ayerdi has Pelli Clarke Pelli to work with. What will we get in San Francisco? This video series holds a clue:1: 2: 3:4. Overall the design is breath-taking. Let's see how much of this design remains as the process of building the structure in a weak economy commences.

Nanaimo Transit Better Service Now
2008-06-20 13:05:00 I recently overheard a young man on the bus speaking with his friend about gas prices. "Well," he said, "I'm taking the bus because it's gotten to the point that I have to choose between feeding my kids or my truck."When we consider this reality, we must ask why our city isn't hurrying to invest in our public transit services. From the citizens point of view, there needs to be a viable alternative to driving our own cars. Currently the bus service is too sparse to properly serve the people of Nanaimo. If our city invests more in this green form of transportation, we will see increased ridership, less congestion on the roads and less pollution. By avoiding the costs of running our own vehicle we can choose how to spend the money saved instead of feeling like a slave to our gas tanks.Upon reviewing the 2008 Nanaimo transit plan I noticed that while the plan seems appropriate, the timeline for implementing service improvements is far too drawn out. On the RDN transit web page it stat...

New Delhi's Bus Rapid Transit System - Democracy Rides a Bus
2008-05-15 19:17:00 For close to a month now, the newspapers in Delhi have been busy covering the fracas caused by the decision of the government to introduce the Bus Rapid System on a fast track. The intent of the government might have been good; but the experience from the phenomenon proves one thing that of course should have been obvious long ago - that technology is a great too but no panacea. Ultimately technological solutions have to operate in society and society is inhabited by human beings, not robots who will dance to a piper?s tune.I missing link in the government?s high powered group, the Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS) Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS) has got experience in several fields and has obviously got strong political backing but it does not appear to have thought of including a behavioral psychologist or an anthropologist in its technical team who could have assessed and evaluated the traffic usage pattern in Delhi and offered some recommend...
Why I don’t use government transit
2008-05-15 12:10:00 Me at Outside the Beltway, yesterday: For most of my adult life, I’ve worked in the Downtown area of Rochester, at one job or another. For the first year or so, and on and off after that, I tried using the bus. After getting mugged twice, having bums hassle me for change, (Which I never carry anyway) having people smell up the bus with various remarkable bodily functions, having one person puke on me, and having my journeys take often as not an hour longer than a car trip would have taken, I gave up on government transport. I’ve ridden on rail systems, which admittedly were marginally better, (DC and the TTC) but even in those situations, being totally dependent on such systems being on time proved problematic when they were not. I will tell you that in recent years, the TTC rail is showing signs of going the way of the less desirable bus systems, in that one of the first things I did on a recent visit to the GTA was trip over a kid in a sleeping bag coming out of the Bl...

Take Two Interactive sues Chicago Transit Authority over GTA IV ad pulling

Ann Arbor Already "Ready" to Go Green and Embrace Cheaper Transit
2008-05-03 06:09:00 Many Ann Arbor residents have been using alternative types of transport for yearsWith the rising cost of gas across the nation, some Ann Arbor residents may be one step ahead. Many residents in the progressive city of Ann Arbor have been thinking "green" for quite some time. Although society generally trends toward consumption, some Ann Arbor folks have found refreshing ways to give mother nature a break. Many are making lifestyle changes that not only help them to save at the gas pump, but are smart choices for sustainability. Buying smaller cars, walking, running, biking or taking the bus - all are viable replacements for transport. One Ann Arbor resident says that riding his bike offers more than just a monetary savings, "it makes me a better person, emotionally and physically. It's the right thing to do for the world in general in my opinion". Another citizen has found that walking an hour each way to work allowed he...

Transit and walkable spaces seen as top O.C. needs
2008-05-02 03:01:00 Two speakers from the American Planning Association said redeveloping older shopping centers and more innovative bus lines may be keys to turning Orange County into a more livable, less car-dependent place. The APA, which is holding its national conference this week in Las Vegas, offered up two Bay Area planning consultants who spoke on ways to breathe new life into conventional suburbs. The first, Stephen Coyle, principal for the “green urbanist” firm, Town Green of Oakland, said communities need to follow what he called the “Five R’s” for suburban redesign: Recompact, increasing intensity of uses, integrating housing and jobs in one area; Reconnect, designing roads and pathways for increased mobility; Recode, updating zoning for mixed use; Redesign, creating public spaces, and Recolor green, making suburbs less reliant on non-renewable resources. Dena Belzer, president of the Berkeley-based planning and consulting firm, Strategic Economics, noted th...
Will Light Rail Solve Downtown Austin Transit Woes?
2008-04-30 15:38:00 Texas State Senator Kirk Watson and Austin City CouncilMember Brewster McCracken have led the charge to change how we commute to within Central Austin. After struggling with congession from our population growth, Mayor Will Wynn charged various groups, community leaders, transit experts and other residents to come up plans for a final vote in November. Roma Design Group was hired as a consultant to the city to evaluate the dire situation and make a proposal. Roma's final solution: place 14 miles of light rail line through Central Austin. Top concerns for Central Austin light rail were: 1. Cost. 2. Whether light railcan actually solve our traffic problems. 3. Could light rail make the problems worse? Cost. According to the Austin Statesman, Councilmember McCrackien sad, "We think it is possible to build this with no new taxes." He outlines a potential option in the plan. Rail would be paid for by revenue from...

Can a Transit Connect be sporty?
2008-04-16 02:18:00 click to enlargeIn the last few days we've seen a battery-powered Ford Transit Connect from Smith Electric and a hybrid version from Connaught Engineering. But do white bonnet stripes belong on a delivery van? Ford certainly thinks so (again), and is debuting the Transit Connect Sportvan today at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham in the UK. The latest version of the long-running Transit van will go on sale in September with a 1.8-litre Duratorq TDCi 110 PS engine that delivers 250 Nm of torque. The exhaust has an optional c-DPF (coated Diesel Particulate Filter) that is compliant with Euro Stage IV regulations and, under normal driving situations, is maintenance-free. Exterior sportiness is generated by the colored bumpers, bright chrome grille and a roof spoiler, among other enhancements fully described by Ford's crack PR team after the jump. Smith Electric may add battery power Ford Transit Connect
2008-04-12 20:05:00 England's Smith Electric Vehicles already produces a battery-powered version of Ford's big European transit van. It now looks like they may soon add a new one based on the compact Transit Connect. The electric Transit Connect may debut in the UK by the end of 2008 and will likely cost twice as much as the current diesel version. The battery-powered van is expected to have a range of 100 miles and top speed of 70mph. Factoring in operating costs, the electric van should be cheaper than the diesel version after five years of operation. Ford announced plans to bring a gasoline-powered version of the Transit Connect to the U.S. earlier this year at the Chicago Auto Show.[Source: TheGreenCarWebsite]

Ford Transit Connect comes to Bugatti?s Ristorante in Dallas
2008-04-03 06:30:00 click to enter a gallery of Transit Connect imagesWhen Ford unveiled the U.S. versions of the Transit Connect in Chicago earlier this year, one of the potential uses the company highlighted was as a restaurant delivery van. The small vans won't be available for sale in the U.S. until mid-2009, but one will soon be in use at Bugatti's Ristorante in Dallas, especially in owner Zee's catering business. Why this restaurant was chosen isn't exactly clear, but - following the New York Auto Show's taxi version of the Transit Connect - Ford is pushing hard to get the message across that these are work vehicles for the fuel-conscious city set. Zee's tasted the Kool-Aid, saying in a statement (available after the jump) that, "Not only will the Transit Connect help with our bottom line thanks to its fuel economy, but it will save time as we won't need to refuel as often between deliveries." The proof will be in the (delivered) pudding, come next year.Gallery: Chicago 2008: Ford Transit ...
Westerbork Transit Camp
2008-04-01 23:06:00 Westerbork The community of Westerbork is situated in the northeast of the Netherlands in the province of Drenthe, 11 kms from the province capital of Assen and about 130 km (80 miles) north of Amsterdam. In a resolution proposed by the Minister of Home Affairs and approved by the Dutch cabinet on 13 February 1939, it was determined to construct a camp "to house the refugees from Germany that live in this country". Opened on 9 October 1939, the costs of constructing the camp, amounting to 1.25 million gulden, were charged to the Jewish Refugee Committee in the Netherlands. When the Germans invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, there were 750 refugees residing in the camp. Initially moved to Leeuwarden, capital of the province of Frisia, they were moved back to Westerbork following the Dutch surrender. The camp came under the control of the Ministry of Justice on 16 July 1940. Refugees from other camps were subsequently moved to Westerbork, which by 1941 had ...
