It’s Monday. There is a nation-wide transport strike going on. I can somehow see its effect. The city government deployed buses to replace the public transport. But I’m glad there are taxis around. I spent the afternoon with Kuya Andrew and Ate Ria. We went to Fagioli to grab some coffee and abuse the free WiFi they offer. Kuya and I had to finish some work, or rather get some work started (again). Ate Ria left earlier because she had to get something from the mall. Smartway is a program aimed at reducing pollution from road freight transport and offers low-cost loans to make it easy for those in the truck industry to install fuel efficiency devices such as low-rolling resistance tires or to certify new vehicles as fuel-efficient. Goodyear also stated that its Fuel Max Line line of tires can reduce fuel consumption by four percent. By using these tires and other Smartway-certified components, Goodyear and EPA announced that a 18-wheeler can save up to 4,000 gallons of fuel per year.Through SmartWay, the EPA aims to reduce between 3.3 and 6.6 billion gallons of diesel consumption and eliminate between 33 and 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and up to 200,000 tons of nitrous oxide emissions per year by 2012.[Source: Goodyear, EPA]

The time has finally come for that plan to commence, as April 15 marked its official start.Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick says,"Making it easier for motorists to use greener fuel is an important step towards reducing carbon emissions from transport. It should help save millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide in the coming years." Requiring biofuels is not enough, thought, as the methods used to create the fuels and the sustainability of the process is equally as important.
