A New Way to Look at Public Transportation
2008-06-24 20:10:00
When we think of public transportation, images of crowded buses and cramped subways come to mind. And even though the public transit systems are better for the environment than everyone driving, they still produce emissions. However, a new design may change the way we look at transportation available to everyone. Garuda finally awarded IATA safety clearance
2008-05-29 12:24:00
Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has finally received safety clearance following a stringent audit conducted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), president director Emir Syah Satar said Thursday. "The IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) for Garuda was approved on May 14 and will be presented during the IATA annual general meeting in Istanbul on June 1-3," said Emir. "We expect the European Union to refer to the audit result during their session on flight ban in July." The EU has banned all Indonesian airlines from entering the bloc's airspace even though none of the airlines actually serve European routes. The government has proposed four airlines to be exempted from the flight ban. In addition to Garuda, the airlines are Mandala Airlines, which has committed to buying a large number of European Airbus jetliners, and chartered airlines Airfast and Premiair. Gas Pains
2008-05-29 06:01:00
It occurred to me the other day that back when I first started driving, I could earn enough to fill my tank by working one hour at my minimum-wage job. Now I make way more than minimum wage (which has also risen), and it takes me about five hours of work to fill my gas tank. Granted, I have a bigger gas tank now in the Mamamobile, but that because I'm supporting a family. I also figured I am driving a LOT less now than when I was a teenager running the roads just to see where they went. Now I'm going to get all sentimotional about those days... (sniff) Excuse me, I'm feeling somewhat verklempt. Take a moment and read these jokes, and I'll try to pull myself together. (update: in the two years since this was written, gas prices have soared. Now it takes ten hours of minimum wage work to fill the tank!) Find the cheapest gas prices in your city. If you don't live in a city, that's too bad! If that doesn't work, try this one. (Thanks, Beth!) Is it worth the extra gas to dr...
Jakarta-Cikampek toll fee up to 15 percent
2008-05-29 04:44:00
The Indonesian government has decided to raise the tariffs for a 72-kilometer toll road operated by state-run PT Jasa Marga by 11.7 percent to 15.0 percent, depending on the type of vehicles, Investor Daily reported on Thursday. The highest tariff hike for the toll road which links the capital Jakarta to Cikampek in West Java will be imposed on passenger vehicles with the fee raised to 11,500 rupiah ($1.23) from 10,000 rupiah previously. The increase will take effect on Friday, according to Nurdin Manurung, the head of Indonesia's toll regulatory body. Manurung said his office is also planning to raise the tariff on the toll road linking Jakarta to Soekarno-Hatta airport, which is also operated by Jasa Marga.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Sunda Kelapa ideal for world-class port
2008-05-28 08:54:00
Architect Martono Yuwono has proposed the city establish a waterfront at Sunda Kelapa, North Jakarta, as a main port for the country. In his book Palapa Nusantara 2015: Kebangkitan Semangat Wawasan Bahari Jakarta (Palapa Nusantara 2015: The Awakening of Jakarta's Maritime Vision), Martono's vision of the waterfront includes an art academy, riverside shops, apartments and an office park. "Indonesia is known as the biggest maritime country in the world. Because of that, I'm offering a project called the Sunda Kelapa Waterfront to the government, especially to the Jakarta administration, to be the country's future main port," said Martono, also an official at the Jakarta Tourism Agency, at the book's launch Sunday. Martono said a number of major cities in the world, including Sydney, New York, Honolulu, Barcelona and Singapore, had turned their coastal areas into main gateways. Indonesia monorail scheme 'implausible' - World Bank
2008-05-23 12:14:00
A long-delayed plan to privately fund a monorail to ease congestion in Indonesia's traffic-choked capital is "completely implausible", the World Bank said here Friday. The plan to build the 27-kilometre (17 miles) network entirely with private sector money would be impossible, with the costs of running the scheme meaning heavy losses, the Bank's infrastructure specialist Hongjoo Hahm told Agence France-Presse.Hahm said a revised Bank study completed this week based on figures supplied by private firm PT Jakarta Monorail found that major government investment would be needed for the scheme to be feasible."We're saying (to the Jakarta city government) don't get your eyes glazed over by private sector guys that are trying to sell you something completely implausible," Hahm said. The Bank's findings, which were passed to Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo Thursday, are the latest major blow to the beleaguered scheme, which has been delayed amid uncertainty over funding.Indonesia News Blog: ...

Fly Me!
2008-05-11 06:03:00
I'm not afraid of flying, I just don't much like it. It just seems like a monumental hassle, and not too comfortable either (at least in coach). You have to book tickets way ahead of time, and shop around a lot just to get a decent fare. Then you have to get there way too early, undergo weird security checks, and pay $6 for a lousy cup of coffee. They squeeze you into a space built for the size Americans were 35 years ago (on a plane thats at least that old). Once upon a time, you'd get a horrible meal served, with alcohol to make it seem better. Now, you are lucky to get peanuts and a soda pop. But I don't drink the soda if its a short flight, because I've been on too many flights with inadequate water for the bathrooms. But I can handle it. After that one 16-hour nonstop in coach with a 300 pound companion, I can handle anything!   Building an Airbus <object width="345" height="252"><p-aram name="movie" value="http://ww...

Jakarta on track to end floods: Governor
2008-04-24 02:00:00
The construction of a new $560m canal in the Indonesian capital should help end crippling floods that regularly hit Jakarta by 2012, the city?s governor Fauzi Bowo said yesterday.Authorities have so far failed to tackle the floods, which killed 50 people during the wet season in 2006 and triggered more chaos in February this year, swamping huge swathes of the teeming city and shutting Jakarta?s main airport for hours.Bowo, who took over as governor in October, said that the floods should be controlled by the end of his five-year term, but was less optimistic on the capital?s notorious traffic woes.?For the floods it?s much easier, because there?s a light at the end of the tunnel,? he told foreign correspondents. Land purchase problems have hampered building of the city?s new 5.2 trillion rupiah ($564.6 million) East Flood Canal, but Bowo said that land acquisition had now reached 80 percent.Bowo said a ?three-in-one? scheme in the city centre, which restricts use of the fast lanes t...
