The Holy City - St. Michaels Church
2008-02-12 17:31:00
St. Michael?s Church is the oldest church edifice in the City of Charleston, standing on the site of the first Anglican Church built south of Virginia. In the 1680?s a small wooden church, the first in the new town of Charles Town, was built on this spot for the families of the Church of England, and named St. Philip?s. By 1727, the town had grown too large for the small church and a more spacious one was built of brick on Church Street, later destroyed by fire in 1835. By 1751, St. Philip?s had again proved too small for the increasing population, and another church as authorized by the General Assembly of the Province, to be built on the old site and to be known as St. Michael?s. The cornerstone was laid in 1752 and in 1761 the church was opened for services. Except for the addition of the sacristy in 1883 on the southeast corner, the structure of the building has been little changed. Although the architect?s name is unknown, the ty...

The Rice Terraces of Banaue are one of the most impressive things I’ve seen on my trip. For miles around the village of Banaue, the mountains have been carved by local residents to grow rice. Charleston Architecture
2008-02-08 16:21:00
Among the many reasons for Charleston's universal appeal is the historic architecture of its downtown neighborhoods. The extent of classic Georgia, Federal, Adamesque, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victoria homes is unparalleled anywhere else in America, but is featured block after block throughout the Charleston peninsula.I love the architecture of Charleston and I promise you, there will be coming more photographs of wonderful places like these.Read more about Charleston and its fine architecture here:

Street scene in Charleston's Down TownInviting house front in CharlestonIn front of "The Market" in Down TownSwamps are typical for this region tooAnd the sunsets here will be very different too - than in Key WestHello my friends,I'm back again! Our move went very smooth so far. Our travel trip of 750 Miles away from Key West to Charleston,SC in the North was big fun - only the weather went from 78F down to 34F and that was a big shock for us, coming from warm Key West, wearing always only shorts and flip-flops every day. I had to buy first warm long pants and closed shoes for me...LOL..We are now moved in to our very nice apartment and are waiting for the delivery of new furnitures. As soon as we are established here, we will be running out to explore and I will have time enough to do new photos from this very nice town. I'm very excited!

Key West Kaleidoscope
2007-11-30 16:16:00
The Strand opened in the mid-1920s and became the home of the Ripley's Believe It Or Not Odditorium in 1993.The theater was sold in December 2001 and closed in April 2002. It has since become the another branch of the Walgreens pharmacy empire. Many of the historic elements of the theater will be saved, however, including its facade, marquee, various aspects of the interior, the lobby tile, marble stairs, and wood floors. This is a great 'train ride' through time. They'll take you back to the days before civilization when fierce Indians left their enemy's bones to bleach in a tropical wilderness naming the island Bone Key.Explore a lush, tropical island, and discover the charm and grace of one of America's most unique architectural pleasures.Get to know characters like John James Audubon, Ernest Hemingway, and Harry S. Truman and, like them, become captivated by the magic that is Key West. You'll even stop at the ice cream shop for a single scoop cone or a refreshing lemonade t...

The Old 7 Miles Bridge - Pigeon Key
2007-08-30 17:12:00
Pigeon Key - Cayo Paloma On old Spanish charts, Pigeon Key was known as Cayo Paloma (dove or white pigeon). Many believe this 5.31-acre island located beneath the Old Seven Mile Bridge, just west of Marathon, was named after the white-crowned pigeon of the Florida Keys. Nobody had much use for Pigeon Key until Henry Flagler needed it to complete the Seven Mile Bridge, which was part of the Florida East Coast Railroad . At that time, the bridge was known as "Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge". Work began on the island in the spring of 1909, and by the beginning of 1912, it held four bunkhouses, each designed to hold 64 men; an engineering/office building, which also held sleeping quarters for the men who worked there; and numerous tents set up over wooden floors on stilts for the laborers. Food was good and plentiful and strict cleanliness was the law. Originally, the design for the portion of the Seven Mile Bridge in the Pigeon Key area called for it ...

A visit in Ernest Hemingway's House
2007-08-27 17:20:00
View from the entrance by the gateHemingway's officeThe bedroomLook into a room from the hallwayAnd his poolAs with most of Key West, you don't have to walk very far to get here - one block across from Duval Street. One of the few stone buildings in Old Key west, glimpses of the very distinguished facade can be glimpsed from the pavement through the tropical trees and bushes in the front yard. As with many of the larger Victorian properties in Key West, the house is an impressive testament to a wealthy period in the City's history. The porches that encircle the two floors of the house and the lush gardens initiate a(nother) bout of "Why don't we live somewhere warm? . . ." "We could live here . . . " The inside of the house is interesting with period and antique furniture that belonged to Ernest Hemingway and his wife Pauline (number two of four?). What makes the visit, however, is the tour guide with their informative and humourous commentary. A life like Hemingway's is rich m...
