Gonna be traveling again...

Catching the boat to England today, and yes, HP will be based there again, reporting from the new epicenter of the global housing crash. Might be a bit spotty on posts and comments for a bit until I get settled in, so be patient.Do me a favor and post interesting stuff here and in BubbleTalk for the next few days. There's been a few things in the news lately deserving of their own posts but are being covered nicely in the comments, like Ed McMahon owing Countrywide Toxic Mortgage over $500,000 and losing his home (how the hell does Ed McMahon go Casey Serin on us?). And the NAR losing their monopoly on the MLS. Nice to see the HP community picking up the slack...

The Traveling Card
2008-06-03 13:39:00
As you all know, I have recently become a (very happy) world traveler! But you know that all that traveling takes it toll on the ‘old wallet’. Traveling in Cancun, Mexico
2008-06-03 00:45:00
Cancun is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Mexico's easternmost state which is called Quintana Roo. This state is located on the Yucatan Peninsula and is most well known as the Mexican Caribbean. However, it does not share a similar climate with the Mediterranean. Cancun is of course one of the most well known tourist spots on the face of the earth. The center of this most popular city is located on the mainland which connects over two lagoons known as the Nichupte and the Bojorquez. There is a much older section of the city which is called the El Centro; it houses super blocks that are formed by intersections and traffic circles. Here in this part of the city you can find market places like the Xel Ha.Cancun is not just known for its great beaches but for its many other tourist attractions as well. Cancun comes equipped with parks, green spaces, pedestrian walkways, and an assortment of national and historical monuments. There are hardly any buildings in this tropical...
Traveling for work
2008-06-02 20:30:00
On Friday I'm headed back to the island on a work trip. By working on Saturday, I should earn 14 extra hours on my pay cheque (it's going to be a long day). 8 of those hours will be regular time, 4 hours will be 1.5x, and 2 hours will be at 2x. Awesome! Although it would be more awesome if my raise would get processed.Because I'm coming back to Vancouver at a different time than the rest of my co-workers on Sunday (I've volunteered to help out my field hockey team raise money at a concession all day), apparently they won't pay for me to park my vehicle at the ferry terminal ($9 for each 24 hours ... plus mileage to and from the terminal), or pay for my travel costs/travel time on Sunday. Because I'm choosing not to travel with them, nothing gets paid for? I don't get it. Either way I have to come back to Vancouver ... what difference does it make if I go with them or by myself? Maybe I can see them not reimbursing me for my parking costs and mileage to and from the ferry term...

Natalie Portman And Her Man Are Still Traveling The Globe
2008-05-31 01:59:00
Fueled by love, it seems that Natalie Portman and Devendra Banhart are still traveling the world with each other. The couple were spotted in Jaffa, Israel after leaving Cannes where Natalie served as part of the film festival's jury. I swear, this guy always has something crazy going on with his clothes, and I don't mean Bai Ling crazy. First it was the Ronald McDonald shoes. Now it's these 70s-style short-shorts. I'm trying really really hard to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. I sincerely hope he is a good person deep down inside with a gleaming personality, because seeing him in those damn-near hotpants makes me want to gag. No one wants to see that! No one wants to see Natalie Portman with that! Photos: BauerGriffinOnline More photos of Natalie Portman with boyfriend Devendra Banhart are after the jump.

What you should know about traveling with your pet
2008-05-27 12:22:00
Planning and Preparation Planning and preparation are necessary when traveling with family pets. Consider whether your pet is comfortable when traveling. Some animals, like some people, function better in familiar surroundings. A car-sick animal can make a trip miserable for everyone. Some dogs and cats cannot withstand the rigors of travel due to illness, injury, or temperament. If this is the case, discuss options such as using a reliable pet-sitter or a clean, well-managed boarding facility with your veterinarian. If you will be staying with friends along the way, be considerate. Find out in advance if the pet is welcome. The same goes for hotels, motels, parks, and campgrounds. Always check whether pets are allowed or kennel facilities are available. If the pet must be left alone in a hotel room, place a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door and inform the maid and the front desk. Consider bringing along a portable kennel for use in hotel rooms or the homes of friends or relatives w...

Traveling into the Unknown
2008-05-25 16:14:00
Travel, adventure or seeing the sights is very satisfying human activity. Ideas and those who hatch them tend to leave behind things large or attractive enough to ogle. So you may go to a place of great historic value and find something new.Best is traveling into the unknown. It is satisfying when you get ?there? and find signs, plaques, remnants of crumbling columns, and a long view of history. And wise is to get travel insurance before you leave home for know or ?unknown? destinations. See what is Over 65 Travel Insurance and how can you they help you travel more satisfied.Cover My Travels offers "Over 65 travel insurance" policies for single trips up to the age of 79 (not having reached their 80th birthday on the date insurance is obtained) and for Annual Multi Trip policies, cover can be provided for those aged up to 69 (not having reached their 70th birthday on the date the insurance is obtained). Interesting and useful. Try them.

Traveling by Horse In a World Dominated by the Automoblie
2008-05-22 22:54:00
For a horsemen to travel on highways designed for automobiles, both horse and rider must trust one another. As motorists whiz by, Bill continues along at a crawl, watching for broken glass, holes, road kill, and anything else which may become a danger. When a problem becomes visible, Bill must decide which action to take. If there is road kill up ahead, he may decide to stop and wait for an open spot in the traffic so that he can cross over to the median. If a vehicle with a flapping bag passes, Bill must take action and kick Blackie up into a trot, so the horse doesn't have time to panic. Usually the most dangerous situation is the one you don't see coming. These are the situations where trust plays the biggest role. There's a decent amount of room in this scene, but on highways where the guardrail is closer to the pavement, there isn't any room for mistakes or second guesses. 05-10-08 read more

Protecting Yourself From Suspicionless Searches While Traveling
2008-05-05 07:14:00
From: Electronic Frontier Foundation   The Ninth Circuit's recent ruling (pdf) in United States v. Arnold allows border patrol agents to search your laptop or other digital device without limitation when you are entering the country. EFF and many civil liberties, travelers' rights, immigration advocacy and professional organizations are concerned that unfettered laptop searches endanger trade secrets, attorney-client communications, and other private information. These groups have signed a letter asking Congress to hold hearings to find out what protocol, if any, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) follows in searching digital devices and copying, storing and using travelers' data. The letter also asks Congress to pass legislation protecting travelers' laptops and smart phones from unlimited government scrutiny. If privacy at the border is important to you, contact Congress now and ask them to take action! In the meantime, how can international travelers pro...

Traveling to Phnom Penh
2008-05-03 10:26:00
I was in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for around 24 hours last week of March. I work in Thailand. After a hectic day at work last Wednesday, attending a workshop, seating for my French class exam, and arranging for another trip to the Philippines, I was finally ready to set off for the international airport, which is about a one hour drive from my office (medium traffic). My flight was at 630 pm but since I already checked-in by internet the night before, I had plenty of time. I had to wait for some time for my re-entry permit application. While waiting I ran to the mini-shop to buy some chocolates as pasalubong for my contacts in Phnom Penh and some throat lozenges and inhaler. In my rush to leave I forgot to bring them. Finally I got my passport back and it was time to queue for the immigration. After maybe half hour or so of waiting in line and watching the funny antics of people from different countries, I was finally able to go through. I wandered around the duty-free area and went to ...

Traveling and giving seminars in Georgia and Azerbaijan
2008-05-02 02:51:00
Sometime in January I received an e-mail from Norn Flynn, past president of the National Association of REALTORS® asking me if I might be interested in traveling to Eastern Europe to give a real estate seminar on behalf of (and paid by) the International Real Property Foundation. (The IRPF was established by Norm in the late 1990s.) I responded that I would love to; it just depended on the timing for travel. After some back and forth we established the time frame, what types of courses they wanted, and which countries I would travel to: Georgia and Azerbaijan. I was given a basic outline and I set about designing a course schedule with 2 days of brokerage management and one day of sales training per their request. With reservations made; my passport at the ready and with one small suitcase plus my computer packed, I was set to go. Friday 3/22/08 My adventure starts. First to Seattle to stay overnight to catch the early plane down to LA for the trip half way...
