2008-06-03 04:23:00 So says Bill Williamson on Hashmarks - The Broncos' decision to release Travis Henry this morning has been coming for months. Broncos insiders said the team had been unhappy with Henry virtually all spring. In a rare statement about a released player, Denver coach Mike Shanahan made a point to say Henry had a lack of "commitment" to the team. The final straw came in the past week when Henry stopped attending the team's OTA sessions. Yes, Henry was hurt with a hamstring injury he suffered 17 days ago, but injured players are required to show up for work. Henry didn't. Perhaps he was upset that he knew he had to fight for playing time with Selvin Young, Ryan Torain and Michael Pittman. Whatever the reason, the team tired of Henry's lack of dedication. The Broncos signed Henry to a five-year, $22.5 million contract in March 2007. He was hampered by injuries and off-the-field issues during his only season in Denver, rushing for 691 yards on 167 carries with four touchdowns in 12 games. "We did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team," coach Mike Shanahan said in a written statement. 2008-05-15 05:42:00 After weeks of hammering Mississipi voters with Anti-Obama commercials that smacked of race-batting in an attempt to have voters select their candidate Greg Davis over Dem Travis Childers, the Republican Party was handed what some call a "stunning loss" and what I call a serious misread of the American Condition.Look, each state in America is a unique region unto itself and to assume that people will think or act the same way in New York as they will in Florida is silly. But it's also dumb to think that what will play in Georgia will work in Florida. It will not. Travis Childers beat Davis by a three-point margin, 49 percent to 46 percent. The reason Childers won is that he's just conservative enough to pull middle-democrats and swing-voters, and he's a Democrat who did not walk away from Barack Obama, which got him the Black and liberal Dem vote, too. I'd like to look at the situations faced by Cleveland DH Travis Hafner and Tampa Bay 1B Carlos Pena.Travis Hafner: His situation is becoming one of baseball's great mysteries. He's been struggling now for over a year - despite his hot streaks, he finished last year with only 24 HR. Granted, he did reach triple-digit RBI, but his batting average was only .266, well off his career pace of .300 or so. Cleveland dropped him in the lineup and they hope that will jump-start their big hitter. He hasn't been helped by the struggles of the rest of the offense, but technically he should be a catalyst rather than the one relying on them.
