Federal Reserve says it will buy Treasury securities and more mortgage-back
2009-03-18 23:24:00 Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in January indicates that the economy continues to contract. Job losses, declining equity and housing wealth, and tight credit conditions have weighed on consumer sentiment and spending. Weaker sales prospects and difficulties in obtaining credit have led businesses to cut back on inventories and fixed investment. U.S. exports have slumped as a number of major trading partners have also fallen into recession. Although the near-term economic outlook is weak, the Committee anticipates that policy actions to stabilize financial markets and institutions, together with fiscal and monetary stimulus, will contribute to a gradual resumption of sustainable economic growth. In light of increasing economic slack here and abroad, the Committee expects that inflation will remain subdued. Moreover, the Committee sees some risk that inflation could persist for a time below rates that best foster economic growth and price stabilit...

Treasury nominee says he failed to pay taxes
2009-01-14 04:17:00 Treasury nominee says he failed to pay taxes WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama’s choice to run the Treasury Department and lead the economic rescue effort disclosed publicly Tuesday that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004, a last-minute complication in an otherwise smooth path to confirmation. Timothy Geithner paid most of the past-due taxes days before Obama announced his nomination in November, according to materials released by the Senate Finance Committee. He had paid the remainder of the taxes in 2006, after the IRS sent him a bill. The still-unpaid taxes were discovered by Obama’s transition team while investigating Geithner’s background. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus said he still hoped Geithner could be confirmed on Inauguration Day. Obama’s staff told senators about Geithner’s tax issues Dec. 5. “These errors were not intentional; they were honest mistakes,” Baucus said after he and othe...

Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS)
2008-04-17 14:23:00 Treasury inflation protected securities or TIPS are treasury notes which offer fixed-income protected from inflations. They offer guaranteed payments which are automatically adjusted with the rise and fall in inflation rate estimated by Consumer Price Index or CPI. TIPS are also known as Treasury inflation index securities and Real Return Bond or RRB (in Canada).TIPS are referred as safest of the safest. With TIPS, the face value of securities is recalculated in every six months and the interest amount is adjusted with the rise or fall in face value. Thus the security holder will get inflation-protection both in interest rate and capital. TIPS can be used as a measure of diversifying portfolio, reducing risks and minimizing portfolio volatility with time. They can be purchased directly as individual bonds or through mutual funds.Treasury inflation protected securities are better for long-term income goals. They come handy when inflation rate is expected to increase. But they offer l...

Treasury Reorganization: Recession Response or Red Herring?
2008-04-04 09:39:00 On March 31st, the Treasury Department announced a new plan to help the troubled financial sector weather the sub-prime mortgage storm. This new system replaces some agencies while redrawing the jurisdictions of existing authorities like the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Reserve. In particular, the Fed's role in averting future crises is greatly expanded, a decision that is in keeping with the recent sea change in America's monetary policy. But can the Fed keep up with its new responsibility? The main difficulty in predicting future financial crises is that, as evidenced by Bear Stearns' epic fall, they can come with less warning than one would like. The Federal Reserve, with 24 hours notice, brokered the boiler-room deal that changed the course of the financial market for the first time since the Great Depression. Therefore, they must plot their course through uncharted waters with more weight on their shoulders during an election year. Conventional wisdom ...
Indonesian finance ministry to buy back treasury bonds to calm market
2008-04-04 03:59:00 The Indonesian Ministry of Finance will buy back Friday treasury bonds maturing between 2008 and 2013 to ease selling pressure in the market, an official said."This is an effort to stabilize the market," Rahmat Waluyanto, the ministry's director-general of debt management, told Thomson Financial.Waluyanto would not reveal the amount of bonds the government can afford to buy back.He said bonds maturing between 2008 and 2013 amounted to 210 trillion rupiah ($22.78 billion).Waluyanto said the recent selling in the bond market had coincided with heavy losses in stock markets."I guess the sell-off is temporary, due to panicky reactions. When the market is weak, any negative news could trigger sell-offs," he said.He said investors might have been worried about the state budget. The government has to revise the budget because some of its assumptions are no longer valid. The recent spike in consumer price inflation might also have dented sentiment to some extent, he said. The stock market ha...
The US Treasury Brings Back the $500 Bill
2008-04-01 15:59:00 Treasury Secretary Paulson announced sweeping changes to US currency today including that the US Treasury was prepared to bring back the $500 Bill, and perhaps even the $1000 as a measure to get consumers buying again."Let's be frank," the Secretary said, "the dollar doesn't buy what it used to, and therefore either does the $100. When we last printed the $500 and the $1000, the $100 was worth $867 in today's dollars, and that gap continues to grow. Already we have a currency gap with the rest of the world. The 500 Euro bill has been available since the Euro inception and the 100 British pound note is worth more then $200 US. "We can ill afford American's being treated a second class citizens abroad. We are also prepared to relaunch the $1000 bill at a later date if needed."President Bush was quoted to say, "Secretary Paulson knows currency, he studied it, he understands it, heck he even has some!," the President said with a laugh. Personal Finance QuickTake: To Hell with Homeowner's
2008-03-26 21:30:00 Treasury Secretary Paulson said today the housing prices should be allowed to continue to fall in order to allow markets to stabilize and allow buyers to come back into the market. In other words...That $1.2 Trillion worth of Home Owner equity at stake in the crisis should evaporate. That $1.2T is from a seperate report looking at the write-offs that may happen in regards to loans. It doesn't take into account the lower values of homes that people will hold onto. Regardless $1.2 Trillion equals $4800 for every man women and child in the US, or $24,0000 for my family alone. The problem with that statement is that it does forget families, which is whose skin this is peeled from. Imagine...they believe the sending my family $2100 is going to be a big stimulus to the economy...what do you think asking me to pay back that $24,000 is gonna do to the economy?Unless a stabilization plan is put into place, people en masse are going to walk away from their homes. 2008-03-22 17:01:00 Some animals are said to be able to sense earthquakes before they happen. It looks like some bond buyers have the same ability. March 20 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Treasury three-month bill rates dropped to the lowest since at least 1954 as investors seek the safety of government debt amid a loss of confidence in credit markets. Bill rates declined as low as 0.387 percent as finance company CIT Group Inc. drew on $7.3 billion in credit lines after being shut out of short-term debt markets. Institutions worldwide have reported $195 billion in writedowns and losses related to subprime mortgage and collateralized debt obligations since the start of 2007. ``All the evidence out there suggests there's more pain to come,'' said Andrew Milligan, head of global strategy in Edinburgh at Standard Life Investments Ltd., which manages $265 billion in assets. ``Investors are going to say they need safer assets.''
