THE SOUND OF TREES
2012-01-24 16:30:00
Thanks to Barthalomäus Traubeck we can actually hear what a tree sounds like. Yep, sounds! The premise of the Netherlands-based artist's project titled "Years" is to sonically convey the age lines of a tree exactly the same way a turntable plays vinyl. With a little help from some high-end computer gear and Ableton Live music software, here's what he's been able to produce:

African Farmers Could Use Trees to Improve Crop Yeilds
2011-10-16 13:33:00
In some cases the maize crop yield has doubled once trees have been planted. Wow! This comes from a BBC headline report today. Wow! What amazes me is that here we are churning out various chemical fertilisers when simply planting a few trees around a field would do the same trick - and we would amazingly help the environment in the process. What is our problem? We have such a pathetic attitude to nature, our daily existence and the future and to all intents and purposes we are in purposeful, knowledgeable and willing self-destruct mode. Nuclear power stations, CO2 capture and storage systems and chemical fertiliser are only three of the thousands of mind-boggling and stupid things that humans see as the answer to the future - why, why, why? Why build nuclear power stations and then watch what happens in Japan and before at Chernobyl? Why capture and store enormous quantities of C02 Gas underground when we should try to stop producing it in the first place? C02 under our feet is ...

Colored Christmas trees - yay or nay?
2010-11-09 05:09:00
Apparently the 70's are in full revival, from urban crafting circles to long haired little boys and now colored Christmas trees. What do we think of this, Culture? My first instinct is to boo a blue Christmas tree. I mean seriously, the audacity. Like trees are naturally going to grow out of the ground the color of Smurfdom and then just blaspheme themselves all over the face of your living room in atrocious orange. Please. Santa likes red and green and the occasional Ikea twist, but loud Christmas tree are an abomination. But wait. What is a Christmas tree supposed to be in the first place? Not like it conveniently grew in your living room in front of that coffee table and...

By traveling to remote rain forests to analyze air samples, they learned that deciduous plants take up 1/3 more of harmful VOCs than previously thought and the scientists are hopeful that understanding the tree’s…

Money Grow on Trees in Australia
2010-09-06 11:43:00
In an attempt to “wake up people’s lazy moneyâ€, RaboDirect, an Australian online bank sponsored a special experiment that fulfilled the financial fantasies of hundreds of passers-by – a real-life money tree. The event took place in one of Sydney’s park, where a tree was covered in $5 bills, from its lower branches to the top. People were secretly filmed, to see how they would react to such an unbelievable sight. Believe it or not, the first 100 or so people who walked by the money tree flat out ignored it. Some of them didn’t even notice there was anything odd about the tree, a group of joggers was to busy running to stop and check it out, and passers-by who did stop to analyze it, just took some photos and left empty handed.

The Shade of the Shaggy Barked Hickory Trees
2010-07-23 21:53:00
Rumi, the 13th century Sufi, wrote, “This being human is a guesthouse, every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all.” I held a yoga workshop in my garden last Sunday. Some old and new friends sat with me on moss and grass sheltered by two ancient shaggy barked hickory trees that have graced our home for a hundred years.   My ingenious husband tucked a garden hose into leafy low branches, and set it to mist. The sun’s rays made a small rainbow and then another; the breeze carried the spray onto our skin before delighting the short stalks in our cornfield. A hawk screeched her song, my new puppy, Harry, slept on cool dirt under a blue spruce; crimson flowers swirled in a humid breeze. The theme of the workshop was clearing out clutter, letting go of that which does not serve, nurturing faith in the abundance around us and uncovering our highest self. W...

Garden Book: Lives of the Trees by Diana Wells
2010-02-10 21:03:00
Diana Wells is probably my favorite garden author around.100 Flowers and How They Got Their Names is the first book by her I read and one I read cover-to-cover just about every year. She has a way of weaving botanical, historical, mythological and literary references about plants into tight chapters that make you feel like you've learned everything you could possibly want to know about a plant. When I first read 100 Flowers it had a tremendous influence on me as a garden blogger and I used it as a guide when preparing posts about plants. I wanted my posts to be more than just a dry retelling of what particular plants were doing in the garden. So I...
From Trees to Tribune, 1937
2010-01-12 18:58:00
I was looking through the Prelinger Archives and stumbled across this thorough video that details how the Chicago Tribune was produced in 1937, beginning in the forest and ending in print. It's complete with moments of the Tribune staff hard at work delivering the news in 1937. Although it's rather long for a web video (20mins), it has some pretty entertaining moments and a delightful old-timey, humble narrator (in my imagination it's @ColonelTribune). Enjoy! My question is, where can I find the entrance to this amazing underground rollercoaster for paper (@ 13:50 in the video)?...

Trees at Home Depot Half Off!
2009-08-06 04:43:00
In the post about espaliered trees I mentioned that I was inspired to buy Rick Bayless' urban edible garden to buy some and plant them in my garden. I noted that espaliered trees are usually the last to sell in the big box garden centers I visit. Well, I just came back from a local Home Depot and what do they have marked 50% off ? Fruit trees along with shade and flowering trees are on sale and they have a number of espaliered apple trees left. The trees are grafted with four varieties of semi-dwarf apples. Hopefully, they'll still have them tomorrow when I'll have access to a truck. At the bottom of the post on Northern Catalpa...

"Dont the Sun look angry through the trees..Dont the trees look like crucif
2009-04-27 10:31:00
from Desperados under the Eaves..by Warren ZevonI thought of these words from Warren Zevons album "A Quiet Normal Life"as the trees outside my apartment building were removed over the last two weeks.Twenty four trees, twelve each side of the large intersection on Route 19 have been unceremoniously lopped, topped and extracted from the centre island of the road.Their removal will allow the construction of traffic turning lanes into the intersection to take place. There was nothing particularly outstanding about these specimens.Just your uncommon urban tree. They were functional.A touch of greenery one could gaze down on.They provided nests and perches for birds. They were homes to the seasonal cicadas that broadcast their raspy metallic beat from their boughs every early summer. They were a barrier against the constant grind of traffic noise.A filter against the fumes and filth that blackened their limbs. I for one will miss them.

Why Save Trees?
2009-03-05 07:54:00
One billion personal computers have been sold across the world, according to hi-tech consultancy Gartner Dataquest report. The number of computers is set to explode in the next few years, reaching the two billion mark by 2008. Unprecedented technology growth in deed! But this is not about the technology growth. Point here is how computer can help save the trees.Use of papers has been around since the Egyptians invented the paper making process some 4,000 years ago. The paper making technology was exported to China in the 2nd century BC and later to the Arabs world in the 8th century. Now paper and paper products are made and used all over the world. Though the process has been refined over years but the basic raw material is pulp that is obtained from wood by cutting trees. The pulp and paper industry is the world?s fifth largest industrial consumer of wood. Over 92 percent of today?s paper comes from trees, and paper production is responsible for about a fifth of the total wood cut...

Seeing Trees by Evan Palmer
2009-02-16 23:04:00
In this article, the trees are virtues and the forest is the whole from which they emerge.Generally, a virtue is good, and a vice, which is opposed to a virtue, is bad. We, typically, don't see them existing on their own without relationships or connections or contexts. For example, seeing courage and loyalty as ideal independent virtues similar to Plato's ideal solids.Because virtues are personal attributes, the sire of any virtue is the sense of self. A person, or personhood, manifests a virtue.Sense of self, in turn, needs memory. The traditional memory but also tendencies, instinct & other innateness, each with their own memories possibly connected to the main traditional memory or other memories, possibly isolated. All enmeshed in a reality, an enormous web of relationships and laws transfixed by time and cravings. This idea of memory is anchored in an uncharted ocean of speculation and ambiguous experimental results. There are persons with almost no physical brains yet...
Not All Nuts Grow on Trees

Jonathon Porritt, British nincompoop, prefers trees to people, Sarah-Kate Templeton, Times(UK): The Optimum Population Trust, a campaign group of which Porritt is a patron, says each baby born in Britain will, during his or her lifetime, burn carbon roughly equivalent to 2½ acres of old-growth oak woodland - an area the size of Trafalgar Square.
