Condo won’t prune trees over Singapore MRT tracks
2008-05-12 21:33:00
Condo won’t prune trees over Singapore MRT tracks  Branches deemed safety hazard, but condo won’t foot bill By Esther Tan  THE problem: About a dozen 12m-tall trees on the premises of a condominium in the east coast area, encroaching on the raised MRT tracks. SMRT says the overgrown branches may be a safety hazard to train operations. But the condominium, Stratford Court, has balked at spending over $2,000 to prune them. It noted that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) guide classified the planting of trees with full-grown height extending above the railway barrier as a restricted activity. However, the condominium’s management committee (MC) added that the guide dated back to August 2000 - and those trees were planted in 1998. The condominium was therefore not obliged to comply with the demands of the guide, said MC chairman Lionel De Souza. SMRT could not provide ‘legal justification’ for the condominium to foot the tree-pruning bill, he said. The f...

Tucson Ironwood Trees in Bloom
2008-05-06 21:01:00
This week I'm seeing the ironwood trees full of blossoms. They are an amazing tree and not far from where I live there is a 20 acre preserve for them. The high school just down the road is "Ironwood High School". This is the time of year they are easiest to identify because of the purple and white blossoms.

Orchids in the Trees
2008-05-02 18:27:00
I love orchids but have never been able to maintain them. I either overkill them with love, care, and water, or it was just too darn cold in Philadelphia. The climate in Turks & Caicos, however, being all tropical, is perfect for orchids. My husband started a program of orchid preservation and growth here on Parrot Cay involving tying the plants to trees around the property to allow them to root and bloom with plenty of natural sun and water. Here you see two plants behind the spa that just bloomed, one red & one yellow. Aren't they great? Woody And Aquatic Plants Pose Greatest Invasive Threat To China

The relatively recent expansion of China’s ...

Cats and trees....
2008-04-29 10:47:00
Hi All,   Hope you are all well and enjoyed the long weekend. Mine has been busy as always with things cat like?.   I managed to ?coax? one Renegade cat into the back garden and on Sunday she came into the house of her own accord and there she stayed until this morning.   Pumpkin is doing great and getting tamer by the day although he does like to scare the c**p out of the human by hiding and then pouncing and hissing!! I hissed back and that seemed to stop him in his tracks, LMAO!   Columbus and Littely are in their element what with all this freedom with the sliding door permanently open and having access to the great outdoors.   My lot have become like kittens again especially my 12 year old bitch biker cat who runs, stalk and pounces and has even attempted climbing the tree a few times.   Sponty and I had a fabulous MOB on Saturday evening at Rockybaby who as always was a perfect hostess and not to mention her Darling Hubby who kept us ve...

The Problem With Tall Apple Trees
2008-04-28 11:43:00
As you might imagine from the previous post, I was feeling a little glum on Saturday night. Until, that is, Ginney called me up and invited me to a party Grassman was having. :) I was very cheered up. Who needs stupid Sc_tch boys when you have loyal friends like Ginney! It was exactly what I needed. Grassman drove to my house with Ginney, picked me up, paid me the money he owed me (yay, and probably thanks to Ginney nagging him on my behalf - he's very good at looking out for me, the dear) and took me to his house. The party was very slow to start. I was there for an hour before everybody was supposed to come. They fed me chops and we just chatted a bit. It wasn't until about ten or eleven that things started getting a little more interesting with the guests. I met one young man, nineteen, studying to be a primary school teacher, who thought I was incredibly weird for not drinking. As in, an absolute freak. I found that a little disconcerting - most people are encouraging once the...

White Dogwood Trees (Cornus Florida)
2008-04-27 19:55:00
Yesterday I planted two White Dogwood trees. We are trying to add new landscaping features to our large yard this year so it doesn't look like a huge open football field around the house. Planting trees, shrubs and flowers can be a rather simple home improvement project that can add significant curb appeal and value to your home. The Arbor Day Foundation has this to say about the White Dogwood Tree:An excellent landscape choice in all four seasons. Flowers are showy in spring. Leaves turn red-purple in fall. Glossy red fruits attract winter songbirds. Likes partial shade; moist, acid, well-drained soil. Grows to 25', 25' spread. (zones 5-9)This should be another great fit for our yard due to the acidic soil. We also have a well drained soil because just below the soil layer is a very deep layer of clean sand. Hopefully these two trees will mature quickly and provide great flowers in the spring and shade in the summer.Tags: Home Improvement, Home Improvement Blog, White Dogwood Tree

Protecting directory trees with gpgdir

gpgdir uses GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG) to encrypt and decrypt files or a directory tree. You could accomplish the same objective by tarring the filesystem up and then encrypting the tar.gz file with GnuPG, but then you would still have to shred or wipe every file in the original directory tree. With gpgdir the whole tree is encrypted in one command.

25 Seriously Twisted Trees: From Uncanny Urban Overgrowth to Awesome Arbosc

Trees and plants have a kind of flexibility that is both disturbing and inspiring. Left to their own devices they can wrap around objects and create strange works of unintentional art. Properly pruned and cultivated they can be made into curious, compelling and useful shapes of all sorts. From tree furniture designs to unchecked acts of nature here are 25 examples of the amazing malleability of trees. Of course, there are many forms of strange green art and other subversive ways to garden. Given time trees can grow around just about anything. Historically, there are a number of legends, rumors and hoaxes regarding man-and-cow-eating trees. Trees that consume people, animals or other objects have also featured prominently in various works of literary fiction such as Little Shop of Horrors. Peter (Pook) Cook and Becky Northey of Pooktre dot Com are two Australian artists and tree shapers who started their love of tree-shaping with a single chair tree. They have since created, indi...
Planting Lilac Trees
2008-04-22 02:32:00
On Sunday my son and I planted three lilac trees for my wife. She loves lilac trees and we've been trying to decide what to plant along the west side of the house. That side of the house has two retaining walls the step the land along the "walkout" basement. The lilac trees we bought are about 36 inches tall with a root ball about 10 inches in diameter. The directions recommend a hole about 2 to 3 times larger than the root ball. Our lot is VERY sandy, in fact there is about 5 inches or so of loam on top of what I call beach sand. The good thing about this is lilacs like a well drained soil. So, we dug the holes and then filled the bottom with some good loam.Lilac trees grow best in a soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Unfortunately our soil has a pH of about 5.3 (see previous post on soil testing). After I put some soil in the bottom of the hole I applied some dolomitic lime to help "sweeten" the soil and raise the pH so it's not quite as acidic. Then we planted the trees making s...

Kentucky Hemlock Trees Threatened with Extinction
2008-04-19 22:24:00
Kentucky’s hemlock trees are threatened with extinction by the hemlock woolly adelgid, a beetle originally from Osaka, Japan which has decimated East Coast hemlocks from Massachusetts to Georgia. It has no natural enemies in North America and, with global warming, may ultimately spread as far north as the Canadian Maritimes.   Massive stands of hemlock have died in both the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia — where an estimated 90 percent of hemlocks have been decimated — and the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, leaving skeletal-appearing standing timber. The aphid-like beetle has been spotted in the Eastern Kentucky counties of Bell, Clay, Harlan, Leslie, Letcher, Pike, Powell and Whitley, as well as in urban areas much farther west in Grayson and Oldham counties. First introduced in the 1920s to the Pacific Northwest and in the 1950s to Washington, DC and Richmond, VA, the woolly adelgid feeds on hemlock needles, depriving trees of nutrients. Left untreate...
