The scorecard on Tribune's ownership of Cubs: Lots of revenue, no titl
2009-09-21 17:14:00
The merciful end of the Cubs season also will close the books on the Tribune's ownership of the team. When they go to spring training next year, there will be a new owner in place. At least, we hope.It has been an eventful run for Tribune Co. since it purchased the team for $20 million in 1981 and sold it for $845 million this year. There's little question the Tribune's ownership was wildly successful from a business standpoint. On the field? Not so much. Here is our final scorecard of the Tribune's ownership on our Business of Sports blog....

What They're Saying About Jay: Lacrosse Tribune
2009-09-19 00:48:00
Dave Myers from the Lacrosse Tribune has some thoughts on the Bears and Jay Cutler. The thoughts themselves are not unique; many columnists, bloggers and even ex-Head Coaches have said the same things. But the methodology he uses to get to his conclusion is, well, odd. "After watching Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler put on his interception demonstration against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, I thought it might be a good idea to sit back and wait a couple of days before chiming in. Sort of give his performance (during the game and after when he spoke to the media) a chance to sink in.After letting Cutler's four-pick performance and his subsequent annoyingly disassociated response after the game...
Screengrab: Chicago Tribune online ad, story eerily similar
2009-09-15 20:02:00
I knew there would be a moment at which art and life danced together in the Wonderful World of Corruption we call home. So imagine my surprised when I refreshed the front page of the Chicago Tribune's Web site today and noticed that the story about Christopher Kelly's apparent suicide (via rat poison...really?) was opposite an advertisement for the upcoming CBS series The Good Wife, which shouldn't be seen as commentary on his survivors, since it premieres Sept. 22 and is about the wife of a sex-scandal-disgraced politician (those tend to be from New York) who is who joins a law firm to support her family. What a stretch, right?...

Stroger's knees are wobbling in Tribune/WGN Poll
2009-09-10 21:46:00
Just when you thought it couldn't get worse after his veto sets in the concrete, President Todd Stroger takes one on the chin with a 10% approval rating and 10% saying they would like to see him elected, based on a Market Shares Corportaion Poll. With strong democratic candidates in the hunt for his job, Mr. Stroger is in need of some serious campaign and PR help. Todd Stroger: Cook County Board PhotoWhen President Stroger was on Garrard McClendon Live, he answered most of my questions. He was clear in thought, well spoken, and well groomed - but, he would not answer the question of cutting any semblance of fat in the budget. After repeated inquiries, I finally gave up...
Is Jay Mariotti coming to Chicago Tribune?
2009-08-10 20:18:00
Rumors are spreading like wildfire across the blogosphere and Twitter that the Chicago Tribune will be the new home to Jay Mariotti's weekly sports column starting September 1. Tribune Exposes Suburban Red Light Camera Scam
2009-07-12 07:09:00
It's just about improving safety. That's the mantra cities, towns, and villages and municipalities around the state of Illinois repeat over and over again as the pretense for installing red light cameras in their municipalities. But according to a fantastic piece of investigative journalism by the Chicago Tribune, many suburban towns are seemingly employing red light cameras for the revenue only, with only a wink and a nod toward the safety aspect of that equation....

Introducing Lori Waxman, Freelance Art Critic for the Chicago Tribune
2009-07-03 22:07:00
Hey, I just got the link for Lori Waxman's latest review in the Tribune. It can't be found by searching the Tribune.com site. http://www.chicagotribune.com/f-eatures/arts/chi-0703-galleries--reviewjul03,0,4752311.story She's covering the West Loop and does a great job. She actually tackles it, whereas I just hid under the rug and described Secrist's gallery through quotes from the movie "Repo Man". But I took lots of pictures  http://bit.ly/pLXhS, and then a seriously awful panorama shot of Kavi Gupta's exhibit: http://bit.ly/D53LI So combine Lori's review with my pictures and you'll really be cooking with gas. I'm also excited to point out Waxman's work because:  A. she's a hell of an art critic, she's out of New York, and has more art knowledge in her pinky than...

Qatar Newspapers: Which is the best?
2008-05-31 21:16:00
I have subscribed to the Gulf Times for some time, and I chose it because, although I often prefer the Peninsula?s style of writing (which is a bit more spiky), I have generally found that the Gulf Times has better coverage of Qatar stories. However recently I have noticed Qatar stories popping up in the Peninsula (through my Google alerts for Qatar, which pick up stories from both newspapers) which I haven?t noticed in the Gulf Times. I also have friends who prefer the new paper on the block, The Qatar Tribune, citing its coverage of international issues. It seemed like a good time for a comparison, so on Friday I purchased and read all three newspapers.I started on the front page, and quickly noticed that both the Tribune and the Peninsula carried the story of the Kahramaa?s network expansion plans. With a planned QAR 10.2 billion of contracts, this could be considered important, from a financial view at least. However, the Gulf Times relegated to this the third page, replacing it ...
Snubfest Article in the Tribune

Check out this article from today's Chicago Tribune! Snubfest starts next Thursday June 5, 8pm at the Chemically Imbalanced Theater.Just for laughs Rejects gather for an improv fest of their own By Glenn Jeffers Tribune reporter May 30, 2008When the Hollywood writer's strike forced him to move the Chicago Improv Festival to the first week in June, Jonathan Pitts found himself placing a strangely familiar call to Angie McMahon."I found out that we were running the same week as Snubfest and I had to call Angie and ask her blessing," says Pitts, the festival's executive producer. "She already had the week and I wanted to make sure it was OK with her."Funny thing, kismet. It was only four years ago when McMahon asked Pitts for his blessing to produce Snubfest, a four-day festival of sketch, improv and stand-up beginning Thursday at Chemically Imbalanced Theater. Now in its fourth year, the festival continues to grow, bringing in acts from all over the country. And even a few from o...

Star Tribune to Cut Newsroom Budget 10%
2008-05-19 00:05:00
Star Tribune Editor Nancy Barnes has been told she will have to cut $2.5 million, or about 10%, from the annual newsroom budget, a Newspaper Guild local official said Friday. The Guild was told of the cut in bargaining sessions, and Barnes has been letting the staff know about the cut, David Chanen, co-chair of the union's Star Tribune unit said in a telephone interview."I think we're both [union and management] looking at it as, if that's the final number we need to get at, we're hoping no jobs will be lost," Chanen said. "To that point, Nancy's made it very clear she doesn't want layoffs, and that's obviously our hope, too." Barnes declined comment to E&P, citing ongoing labor negotiations. In February, the Star Tribune laid off 58 employees, most of them in the circulation department. The paper also froze wages for all non-union positions. Publisher Chris Harte has said the paper's total revenue has fallen by $75 million in the last two years. Last week, the paper deni...

Chicago Tribune "Commercial real estate slump more apparent in suburbs"
2008-05-09 03:00:00
With the plethora of space that is available in downtown Chicago and continues to be built, as well as the high cost of parking and the long travel times, it is interesting to find out that the suburbs have actually felt a bigger slump in commercial real estate. The Chicago Tribune cites to an analysis by MB Real Estate, which found that "the overall vacancy rate for downtown increased from about 11.7 percent in the final three months of 2007 to 12.3 percent in the first quarter of 2008. Those numbers, while not exhilarating, are certainly better than Chicago saw in the early 1990s when vacancies soared. But in the suburbs, MB Real Estate found, the vacancy rate rose from 16.1 percent in the last quarter of 2007 to 17.3 percent in the first quarter of this year." While it is easier to travel within the suburbs, where there is ample free parking, limited rush periods and none of the aggravation that you find in the City of Chicago, the fact re...
