Shade & Blu-Swing - Jazzyster [2007]Jazzyster Link 2Funky jazz and a bit of hip hop -- a great little set that mixes up two of the best modes coming from Japan of late -- the live music jamming of the club jazz scene, and some of the spacier hip hop production of the Jazzy Sport/Planet Groove crowd! The core combo here are Blu-Swing -- who serve up some great grooves on keyboards, sax, guitar, bass, and drums -- and rhymes are served up by MC Shade on some tracks, but others feature straighter lyrics from Yu-ri -- a really nice blend that keeps things from getting too stale. The jazzy grooves are great, and feature some especially good acoustic bass at the bottom -- and titles include "Bossanavia", "Midnight Lounge", "Fabulous", "Side Walkaz", "Realize", "Blue Velvet", and "Acoustic Lover" -- plus remixes of "Midnight Lounge" and "Fabulous".All track info is in the comment section...

Soulstice - Illusion (2001)Link 2Soulstice is an excellent group of musicians. The songwriting and production on "Illusion" are virtually flawless and will definitely appeal to those who like downtempo and lounge/chillout music. This group even did a remake of Nat King Cole's classic 'Tenderly' and it is HEAT unlike that junk on urban radio where millions of songs - all about going to the some ol' stanky club - are considered the 'talent' of today. All track info is in the comment section...

Tablo & Pe2ny is Eternal Morning - A Soundtrack To A Lost Film (2007)Link 2Back from overseas to bring you all that HEAT! The album consists of a dozen jazzy downtempo hip-hop instrumentals that would certainly be appreciated by fans of Japanese anime (e.g., Cowboy Bebop). Even though the album's beats seem a bit too spooky (even for my tastes), the production on this album is amazing!Comments and opinions on this release are strongly encouraged! All track info is in the comment section...

Lemongrass - Pour L'amour [2008]L'amour Link 2Roland Voss aka Lemongrass has every reason to celebrate. His brand-new album ?Pour l?Amour? is his tenth in a row of outstanding releases and continues to play with jazz elements already known from the preceding album ?Filmothčque?. In contrast to his previous instrumental approach, the sound on the new album gains further momentum by the beautiful voices of three female vocalists: Hamburg-based artist Skadi (known from "Fleur Solaire"), Tokyo singer Mayu (known from ?Ikebana?) and New York songstress Manalili add truly soul-tickling pleasures.Whereas ?Filmothčque? presented itself as a genre-bending album incorporating the most diverse ingredients, themes and plots, ? Pour L?Amour? comes as an all-embracing encyclopedia covering the eternal theme of love, which perpetrates the album in all facets transforming the overall theme into inspiring music with sense and sensibiltiy.?Pour L?Amour? has it all and thoroughly finds the perfect c...

Irány a myspace-re!

Whether you're looking for intelligent lyrics, hypnotic grooves and textures, or uncharted improvisational journeys, RPM has something to offer every audience member. PlantLife ? Time Traveller (2008)Time Link 2With their new album ?Time Traveller?, PlantLife continues the musical exploration that made their debut an instant classic (the best elements of 70?s soul, funk & rock, 80?s electro freak out, 90?s b-boy politics and 2008?s futuristic ideals). Jack explains ?Honestly, in certain regards I really feel like the energy I have inside me is the same musical energy of all of the people I love who gave it everything they had. Jack shows his continued love, respect and admiration for the ladies in his songs. Song titles like ?Sun Shines Through Your Love? & ?What A World Babygirl? show the exhilarating optimism of Plant Life?love despite chaos. With a conscious decision not to weigh the album down with the obvious pessimism of modern day politics, PlantLife leave most of the politics for the end of the album with songs like ?Tear The House Down? and ?Believers?. In ?Tear The House Down? Jack insinuates that we might be better off having ...

Mahya - Inner Explosion [2007] Mayha Link 2A blend of modern club soul and sweetly tuneful songcraft from Mahya -- wonderful work from the soulful tier of Japanese scene -- featuring production by Tettory BLK, aka Maysaya Fatasista & Grooveman Spot! Mayha's voice is mellow and inviting as can be -- rolling effortlessly from a breathy coo to a more extroverted approach -- over percolating beats and production. The vocals are mostly in Japanese but the groove is boundless! Titles include the DJ Mitsu produced "Oneness" feat Hunger, "Good Vibes", "Nobody Like Me", "Who Wanna Know", "Should Get Up", "Ghetto Boy", "Love Birds", "Tobari"* Another Great Ortega Post *All track info is in the comment section...

Esthero - Wikked Lil' Grrrls [2005]Wikked Link 2Wikkid Lil' Grrrls is a sexy, sophisticated blend of hip-hop, jazz, dance, rock and soul. Add Cee-Lo Green of Goodie Mob, Sean Lennon and a crew of producers including Dr. Dre cohort Camara Kambon (Eminem, Mary J. Blige) and Wikked Lil' Grrrls is as wikked cool as Esthero herself. Finally, with Wikked Lil' Girls and its first single, "We R in Need of a Musical Revolution," the silence wasn't just broken, it was blown wide open. An acerbic, beat-driven track, the song unapologetically attacks the current state of pop music ("I'm so sick and tired of the s#@! on the radio") rightfully and righteously. The disc then shifts from uptempto timeless pop ("Every Day Is a Holiday," featuring Sean Lennon) to sexy downtempo ("Beautiful Lie") and then to a later section of slow songs and smooth jazz--a fluid rollercoaster of sound. The final song, "Dragonfly's Outro," is a gorgeous, float-on-clouds track with horns sampled from '80s soundtr...

Ronny Jordan - At Last [2003]Link 2This CD is the perfect combination smooth jazz and funk. If that is what you're looking for, then Ronny Jordan delivers. His rendition of "Nite And Day" is sheer perfection, but every track is wonderful.Ronny Jordan-A Brighter Day [2000]Link 2On his fourth recording--his first for Blue Note Records-- guitarist Ronny Jordan moves in a more mainstream direction. He minimizes the hip-hop and rap elements in his mix to favor a more subdued, straightforward jazz approach that brings to mind one of Jordan's role models, Wes Montgomery. While this may furrow the brows of some acid-jazz fans, the results heard on this 73-minute excursion are largely positive and quietly appealing. The London-born Jordan reveals himself as thoughtful and expressive player, notably on self-composed, Pat Metheny-like, pop-jazz cruisers ("Two Worlds," "Rio," "Seeing Is Believing") and in a more mainstream vein, "5/8 in Flow." For some listeners, A Brighter Day may at times s...

Dinner At The Thompsons - Lifetime On Planet Earth [2007]Link 2The Franco-American duo Dinner At The Thompson?s release their first opus ?Lifetime On Planet Earth". The smooth and sensual grain of Lucille?s voice mixes with Fablive?s productions, an eclectic concoction of acoustic soul, jazz, electro funk creations, and audacious break-beats. A sound that leaves much to reflect on for the musically adept, but most of all that blows you away with its finesse and sincerity - definite chemistry ! The stories Lucille tells through her lyrics, a blend of urban poetry and existential reflections, comment on beginnings, on endings, on life experienced; a natural, warm voice that will nourish the finest of gourmets. Colored with subtle bits of sampling and live instrumental recordings, their musical world is also inspired by the acoustics and rhythm in Afro-beat. The album was conceived to give a warm feeling, a rarity in today?s often over-produced-sounding albums. Fablive brings rap, sou...

Bonobo - Days To Come [2006]Link 2Simon Green aka Bonobo returns with his third album and the kind of quantum leap in quality that very few artists make. ?Days To Come? has the feeling of a classic all over ? a big, brooding, emotional and uplifting record that you can dance to, do the dishes to, or sit and really study.Green has always been expert at welding together music dripping with atmosphere, combining his own musical and technical talents in such a way as to make utterly organic-sounding machine music. This is not just a knob-twiddling producer but a multi-instrumentalist at work, who writes, plays and then manipulates almost every note of music he releases. And ?Days To Come? shows a new structural awareness growing from this, a feeling for the song form and the gradual build which raises it way above the work of many of his contemporaries and cries out for him to achieve the kind of mainstream success that has talent has long hinted at.Bonobo - Live Sessions EP [2005]Link ...

But the United Future Organization manages to bring together elements of both, along with traces of club music and "rare groove," and create something that is both elegant and rhythmically propulsive, not to mention structurally interesting. Their latest album is an excellent example of what they can do at their best. On "Tres Amigos" Cuban percussion, horns, and piano are goosed along by a thick, bouncy bassline; "Flying Saucer" blends disco rhythm guitar with jazzy horns and a gorgeous vocal courtesy of Dee Dee Bridgewater; "Dans...

Background wise Musetta are Italian duo Matteo Curcio and Marinella Mastrosimone who have intermittently been working together on various projects / bands since the late 90's. Their music bequeath a broad spectrum of textures, moods and styles to their musical canon, principally the noire-ish spectrality of the early 90's Bristol scene - Portishead, Massive Attack et al being blended by the obscurest cabaret dark pop of Goldfrapp and seductively dry spun with shades of smoky jazz and down tempo for alarming effect. Lemongrass - Time Tunnel [2004][CD1]Lemongrass - Time Tunnel [2004][CD2]If you want to make a time-travel, you need a time-machine. ...or so you think. But you can do it differently - and more easily: Just take a MP3-player and the latest work "TIME TUNNEL" from the founder of Lemongrass, Roland Voss, and off you go on an unbelievably exciting trip to the various and successful works of the last eight years of the artist, who produces in the proximity of Bielefeld. "TIME TUNNEL" is not simply a "Best of..." album of Lemongrass, but rather a retrospective. In addition, Roland Voss has deliberately selected several unknown and until now unreleased tracks. The idea of "TIME TUNNEL" was to create a chronological order - which also applies to the two time-travels "Backward" (approx. 2004 - 1998) and "Forward" (approx. 1997 - 2003). "ALL THERE", "ILLUSION", "NIGHTINGALES", "UMBALILA", and "OCEAN" are the five formerly unreleased tracks on the CDs, "LA PLUME", "BUCCA", and "ELEMENTS" had b...

Morcheeba-The Antidote [2005]After selling more than 5 million albums worldwide, Morcheeba return with a fifth album forged around the Godfrey brothers' magpie influences. This collection transcends the band's signature downbeat style with tunes that are more defined and distinct than on previous outings where the groove sometimes seemed the only concern. Fans of psychedelic arrangements, complex rhythms, and inventive songwriting will embrace it. Aphex Twin, Sonic Youth, St Etienne, My Bloody Valentine, Jimi Hendrix, and the 5th Dimension are all detectable here.Since delivering their 1993 mini-opus Big Calm, second-generation trip-hop outfit Morcheeba have taken their hybrid blues/country/hip-hop/soul sound to an increasingly wider audience. Their music has suffered as a consequence, the sass and strut of the early days gradually suffocated by tired production clichés and vapid, big-name collabs (see Charango). The Antidote has none of that. It's a stonking return to form, as t...

Recoil - Subhuman
2007-12-14 22:08:00
Recoil is the project of Alan Charles Wilder, formerly of Depeche Mode. Born on 1st June 1959, he is a classically-trained musician and renowned contemporary music producer.Recoil was born in 1986 as a two-track experimental EP. Simply entitled ?1 + 2?, this collection of primitive demos caught the attention of Mute Records label boss Daniel Miller and was inconspicuously released as a mini-album on 12" vinyl. An album, 'Hydrology', soon followed in 1988 and both were eventually re-issued by Mute on CD as 'Hydrology plus 1+2'. These early Recoil recordings revealed Alan?s position as a pioneer in the newly emerging world of sampling technology and demonstrated how he could turn the Depeche sound around to create something entirely new. Wilder described the project at the time as ?... an antidote to Depeche Mode; a way to alleviate the frustrations of always working within a pop format?.Almost immediately, Wilder found himself back in the studio to record what would become the...

Billie Holiday - Remixed & Reimagined
2007-11-20 20:45:00
Remix collections generally either treat the source material as a jumping-off point for wild, barely relevant improvisations, or they present the songs more or less as they've always been, with maybe a new beat and some synthesizer accents. The Billie Holiday remix project Remixed & Reimagined splits the difference. Swingsett & Takuya's album-opening version of "I Hear Music" sets the tone, sounding like an entirely new pop-jazz workout, with Holiday's vocals merely floating through, almost like a sample. The majority of R&R's tracks pull Holiday's recordings apart and interject them into reasonably effective Lounge/electronic music, like a distant transmission causing interference. Nothing here sounds as natural or as heartfelt as Holiday's best work, though it's all?conceptually at least?"cool." 01. I Hear Music (Swingsett & Takuya's Mighty Fine Remix)02. Moloko - Thinks To Make And Do (2003)
2007-11-19 21:56:00
Moloko were an Anglo-Irish electronic/dance duo consisting of Róisín Murphy from Wicklow, Republic of Ireland and Mark Brydon, from Sunderland, England. The band's name originates from the novel A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, in which it means either "milk" (the name of a milk drink Alex and his 'droogs' consume, and the Russian word for milk) or "method of narcotic ingestion". (Fellow electronic Sheffield band Heaven 17 had also taken their name from the novel when they formed in 1980.)History of band:Róisín Murphy was born in Dublin, and had no prior professional experience as a singer. Mark Brydon already had an extensive resumé within the dance music community as a remixer and member of pop/house acts House Arrest and Cloud 9. They met at a party in Sheffield, when Murphy approached Brydon using the chat-up line, "Do you like my tight sweater? See how it fits my body!" This line would later become the title of their debut album, recorded while the pair were dating. The ...

Air - Premiers Symptômes [1999]
2007-11-12 21:30:00
The French band Air is a duo consisting of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel. They went to school in Versailles (Lycée Jules Ferry) before forming the band in 1995. Their critically acclaimed first album Premiers symptômes was followed by the release of Moon Safari, The Virgin Suicides (soundtrack), 10,000hz Legend, and Talkie Walkie. In 2007, Air released the album Pocket Symphony.Although Air's music is often referred to as electronica or trip-hop and is often found in such bins in record stores, their form of electronic music actually owes more to the synthesizer sounds of the 1970s such as Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis. Other influences that are more readily apparent than house and techno are psychedelic rock pioneers Pink Floyd and krautrockers Tangerine Dream (although there are some echoes of dance music styles in the production). Another influence is French crooner Serge Gainsbourg. Air's music also has jazz inflections at times, and their ability to improvise is more...

Zagar - Local Broadcast (2003)
2007-11-12 21:18:00
?agar is at their best when melting rock, electronica and contemporary dance music while adding an extra zest with a touch of hiphop. The resulting sound is strongly based on the determining features groove, atmospheric mood and sound clips from the psychedelic era of the late 60´s.But ?agar wouldn?t be ?agar if they didn?t leave sufficient time and space for a more than convincing display of their improvisational talents. Apart from ?agar himself, the two other band members (Andor Kovács/guitar and DJ Bootsie/Scratch) have considerably contributed to the wide cult-like reputation of Yonderboi as a top live performing artist by backing him at more than 160 live gigs all around the continent.Their first album the "Local Broadcast" was released in 2002 in Hungary by UCMG/Ugar records and in 2003 in Austria by Universal Jazz. This album has received warm welcome abroad by professionals and collectors alike. The album was selected for the chart of the 50 all time?s most impo...

Baby Mammoth - Swimming
2007-11-10 13:13:00
Mark Blissenden and Andrew Burdall are the force behind the acid jazzy downtempo duo Baby Mammoth. The two share an appreciation for Deep House. They connected and started writing music together in 1994.Amidst heavy competition, Baby Mammoth is the Pork label's most prolific act, packing in five full LPs of blunted instrumental hip-hop between their debut in late 1996 and the end of the decade. Like other Pork acts Fila Brazillia and Solid Doctor, the duo of Mark Blissenden and Andrew Burdall specialize in earthy breaks and ambient atmospheres, more slanted to the instrumental edge of acid jazz than other producer-based trip-hop acts. The pair first met Pork label-head Dave Brennand and associate Steve Cobby (aka Fila Brazillia) at a club in Hull, where both band and label are based. The relationship blossomed with the release of Baby Mammoth's debut, 10,000 Years Beneath the Street, in 1996. Blissenden and Burdall then released two albums the following year (as well as an EP and ...

Rodney Hunter - Hunter Files (2004)
2007-11-09 20:49:00
G-Stone is the label of Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister (Kruder & Dorfmeister), and its releases are few, far between, and all listenable. This is no exception. Wherever they found Rodney Hunter, bless those nutty Austrians for doing so. Rodney Hunter is a crisp, slack plate of tasty cuts that connects between the elegant trip-hop and acid jazz of Kruder & Dorfmeister and the chilled sounds of artists on Naked Music or Compost labels. Delicious synth-bass, echo effects on vocal samples, bits of dub, and syncopated beats, and just an overall balanced layer-cake of soultronic sounds. Check out the dubwise Find It, the lush Is This Your Body, the dance floor configured Electric Lady, and supaheadnoddin' Work That Body. And the highlight for me in Hunter's You're Not Alone is hearing an extrapolation of Herbie Hancock's Butterfly.1. Intro2. Electric Lady3. Work That Body4. Let Your Soul Guide Your Heart5.
