Seven necessary items for your trip to Chicago
2009-10-18 05:52:00
I-PASS sign Whenever I see someone slowing down rush hour traffic asking for directions or taking pictures of the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower), clicking photos, and walking aimlessly not knowing how to get anywhere in Chicago, I usually try to help them out unless they look suspicious. However, I think there are seven items that tourists should have when traveling in Chicago to make their trip a little easier.   RTA map: This map shows the entire city of Chicago and what color line goes where. There are various color lines for "el" trains in Chicago--the pink line, brown line, purple line, yellow line, red line, blue line, green line and the orange line. If...
Trip Idea: A Long Weekend in Denver
2009-10-09 19:45:00
Scott Ingram Photography via Flickr Did you know that the flight from Chicago to Denver is only 2.5 hours long? On the way back, it's closer 2 hours flat, making it an easy jaunt for a long weekend. Southwest, United, and Frontier operate dozens of low-cost flights between the two cities each day, with prices ranging from $180 to $250 per person. Drinking and dining is relatively cheap and mid-priced hotels average $130 per night so it's a trip you can pull off on even a smaller budget. If you only have the weekend, concentrate your time in just Denver or Boulder. If you can stretch your vactation to 3 or 4 days, it's worth getting out of the city to explore....
Quick Trip to Hawaii
2009-09-22 23:21:00
I closed my eyes and visualised being a 16 year old again (visualising driving on the right side of the road), and we set off. Yan-Shih and I have just returned from a trip to Hawaii for Ian's wedding - and what a fun, fast-paced time we had! I left work a few minutes early on Thursday and went straight to the airport, where I met Yan-Shih, and we boarded our 6:00pm flight to Honolulu. The flight was slightly bumpy, and we tried to sleep. Our flight of choice was Jetstar, which was mediocre as always (imagine flying EasyJet for 10 hours), but we knew to plan ahead as much as possible. After arriving in Honolulu we quickly boarded the little bus to the other terminal, and boarded a second plane to Maui. A short island hop later and we landed in Kahului. Immediately after leaving the airport, and marveling at how tan everybody was, we hitched a ride with the Thrifty van to the rental car depot. Just as we arrived at the depot we glanced over and saw a tow truck with a totalle...
Super commuters have an intense trip to work
2009-09-22 05:31:00
Bob Herskovitz of Glencoe runs 20 miles from his suburban digs to downtown at least once a week, sometimes twice.By Kyra KylesRedEye Maybe you walk a few miles to work.Perhaps you bike it in using trails and paths. It's possible you've cooked up a CTA commute so complicated that even agency President Richard Rodriguez would scratch his head. If you do any of the above, you could be ahead of the get-to-work game for a local car-free challenge this month. On Tuesday, the Active Transportation Alliance is partnering with agencies including Pace, Metra and CTA for the "Car-Free Day" pledge, part of a daylong world initiative to "X" out autos. The impending hooptie holiday gave RedEye the notion to take...

Visited the Home of GSP on My Trip to Montreal

I went to Montreal for the first time this past weekend.  The purpose of the trip was to explore a new city, take in culture, look at art, sit at wonderful restaurants and of course see how the Canadians train up close.  I had the pleasure of visiting Adrenline Performance , owned by Jonathan Chaimberg who trains most of the Jackson MMA Team out of New Mexico, not to mention all of Canada's best in the fighting sports: George St. Pierre, Denis Kang, Jerome Le Banner, Shane Carwin, David Loiseau, Nate Marquart.Jonathan was nice enough to let me watch one of the fighter training sessions.  At the moment I arrived,  Jerome Le Banner, the K1 Champion ( 74-14-1 / MMA...

Kmart Super Doubles Trip
2009-09-03 21:03:00
OK, I caved. I succumbed to the siren song of Kmart Super Doubles. I did pretty well, but I must warn you -- I have never been able to do a Super Doubles trip in less than 2 hours. Maybe if I were better organized or if I didn't have the kids with me. I did OK -- $50 worth of stuff for $10.   The coupon for the thing I really wanted to use for free product, Softsoap Ensembles refills, was no longer available, but I did have those four $.55/1 Reece's coupons, which would translate to four free 10-packs of Reece's (on sale for $1 this week) for our block party pinata this weekend. A Quick Summary of My Trip
2009-08-17 08:36:00
It's been over two months since I've come to Iran, I've taken thousands of pictures, talked to countless people, and experienced Iran as an Iranian should. And although I have about two weeks left in Iran, I think it would be apt to post some pictures from the places I've been and events I have encountered. The famous Azadi Monument in Tehran.I've been in Tehran for probably a third of my trip. It's of course the capital of Tehran and the central location of the post-election protests. Most of my interesting personal experiences have taken place in Tehran at the peak of the political turmoil. Overall, I've grown to love the city despite it's pollution, overcrowding, and sometimes dishonest store owners. For...

Nerdapalooza Van-Trip Video Diaries
2009-07-17 05:20:00
So, as many of you know, one of the biggest parts of 'growing up' as a band is the age old ritual of touring. And the time-honored vehicle of choice for touring is of course:  the van.Last weekend we went down to Orlando, Florida (a 24-hour drive each way, it turns out!) to play in Nerdapalooza, and for better or worse, we took video blogs every 2 hours, and documented the madness, so everyone could come along with us! :D  We responded to people's comments and questions as we went along, and so we've decided to compile them all here on this blog!  They include Traffic, NES, McDonald's Playplaces, Arrested Development, Singalongs, Waffle House, and even a conference-room / ball-pit at...

Asheville Trip To Foodtopia - Part II
2009-07-04 06:08:00
Day two of our trip in Asheville had us move around a bit less but was just as intense, keeping us on our toes until bedtime. Or was it until we all rolled, stumbled, fell, crashed on our beds?! Ha! Yes, we can blame it on all the tasty wines, succulent dishes, intense Iron Chef competition, culminating with an outstanding dinner at Horizons in The Grove Park Inn.The 4 Diamond restaurant gathered us around one of the best meals I have had in my life, ending in the most perfect sweet note: a chocolate and caramel tasting executed by Pastry Chef Laura Bogard. Before I could even ask our hosts if Laura would be kind enough to share a couple of the recipes, I was graciously handed a print out of all the components of our plate. Once back home in SC, I decided to put my own spin on it and make this Chocolate Torte topped with Caramel Ice Cream and Chocolate Sorbet, inspired by that evening. But let's talk about the day first...We started with a visit to Sunburst Trout Farm outside of As...

Ah, summer. A popular time to slip or trip, fall and sue.
2009-06-30 00:24:00
Quite a few trip-and-fall and slip-and-fall suits filed in Cook County court today. The trips and slips: a sidewalk in Brookfield Rice Lake Square in Wheaton a Save-a-Lot on 63rd in Chicago Caroline Sibley Elementary School in Calumet City St. Bernard Hospital in Chicago Lucky Strike Bowling Alley in Chicago Most were due to uneven sidewalks or parking lots, and five out of the six took place in the summer months, which is something I've noticed. Sure, you get your wintertime icy sidewalk lawsuits, but there are plenty of slip-and-falls or trip-and-falls in the summer too....

Take a trip with Expedia (EXPE)
2009-06-17 14:00:00
"Expedia (NASDAQ: EXPE) has taken flight over the past two months, soaring more than 165% off their early-March low," says Paul Tracy. The editor of Street Authority Market Advisor explains, "Despite a sharp slowdown in leisure and business travel, overall travel volume booked through Expedia's sites (which include Hotels.com and Hotwire.com) remains impressive." Here's his review."Over the past three months, Expedia's travel sites have booked $5.2 billion (retail value) worth of travel expenditures. That gross booking figure is down about -11% over last year, but represents a considerable +30% improvement over the prior quarter. "Unfortunately, those trips were taken at lower rates, as hotels and airlines are slashing prices to attract business. As a result, sales dipped -8% to $636 million, but still checked in well ahead of estimates (as did earnings of $0.21 per share). "I'm not too worried about average daily room rates and airf...

Koh Kaew Yai - Boat trip from Rawai Beach
2009-06-09 09:03:00
Just off the south of Phuket there are a number of small islands such as Koh Bon, Koh Lon and Coral Island all of which have beaches and some facilities and accommodation. We intend to visit them all in the future, especially now that we have found a friendly longtail boat captain at Rawai Beach. You can get to all these islands from Rawai and will have to negotiate a price for the boat trip. We have meant to do this for ages, and have vowed not to be so lazy from now on!We took a trip to Rawai a few weeks ago. Weather was a bit grey and some light drizzle fell during the trip, but the sea was pretty calm. We wanted to visit Koh Kaew Yai which is only about 1km south of Phromthep Cape or about 4km by boat from Rawai Beach. The island has a Buddha statue facing towards Phuket watching over the island. Aside from the statue we did not know what to expect on the island. On the way back to Rawai we figured to stop at Koh Bon, which you can see from Rawai beach. At Rawai we parked the car...

Washington, DC : 17 min.Brownback Comments from Detainee Facility at Guantanamo BayWASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today returned from leading a Congressional delegation to visit the detainee facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba."Guantanamo Bay is a world-class detention facility that would be almost impossible to replicate elsewhere," said Brownback. "Rumors of Guantanamo Bay being a black hole are unfounded. I am struck by the contrast between Guantanamo Bay and prisons I have toured in the past. The nature of the detainee population and the threat that these individuals pose affects every detail of the Guantanamo operation from the layout and design of the facilities to the level of legal, medical and other services provided to detainees."Brownback toured several detention camps, includin...
