Top Ten Things Overheard On My Family Road Trip
2008-06-30 21:51:00 When I fully recover, next summer, I shall post about the mileage odyssey that was my recent family vacation road trip. Did you know that with three stops (1 to eat, 2 to see the redwoods and a third for a catnap at one of our state?s lovely rest areas) that you can drive from northern Oregon to southern California in only one day? Literally one full day. As in leave Oregon at 9 in the morning and walk in your front door at 9 the next morning. I now have a whole new appreciation for truckers, several of whom I may have inadvertently cut off during those last few harrowing hours of my zombie driving. Having seen the sunrise and sunset and sunrise again, I can?t help but wonder if the feelings I experienced are the same feelings astronauts experience with every full orbit around the earth. I?m pretty sure I saw a cow tap dancing with a llama about an hour north of Magic Mountain on Interstate 5, but then I was pretty loopy at the time and had was listening to a Spanish speaking ...

2,000 Toys Have Made The Long Trip to Iraq
2008-06-06 14:14:00 A picture of how toys can be a real joyful support, even in a war-torn country like Iraq. This is the story from the internet. From Dailypress, about how toys could give warmth to Iraqis children. The bar in Shirley McGee's sitting room is brimming with toys — teddy bears, stuffed animals, dolls, soccer balls. You name it, and it's there, but for a limited time only. Each week, after collecting donations from all over the Peninsula, McGee and her family pack and send the toys to Iraq, where her son-in-law, Sgt. Matthew Jensen, of the 202nd Military Police Camp, is stationed. To date, more than 2,000 toys have made the long trip to Iraq, finding themselves in the arms of hundreds of Iraqi children, many of whom had nothing to call their own until that point."These kids have never been into a Toys 'R' Us, or walked into a 7-Eleven to get a Slurpee," said McGee. "All around them is fighting, death and destruction, so if the toys we send can offer them a little happiness and bring a...

Ride-About 2008 is Rapidly Approaching
2008-06-05 15:00:00 The term Walkabout refers to the commonly-held belief that Australian Aborigines would "go walkabout" at the age of thirteen in the wilderness for six months as a rite of passage. In this practice they would trace the paths (the so-called songlines) that their people's ceremonial ancestors took and imitate, in a fashion, their heroic deeds. In adult life, the idea is that a person can get so caught up in one's work, obligations and duties that the truly important parts of one's self become lost. From there it is a downward spiral as one gets farther and farther from the true self. A crisis situation usually develops that awakens the wayward to the absent true self. It is at this time that one must go walkabout. All possessions are left behind except for essential items and one starts walking. Metaphorically speaking, the journey goes on until you meet yourself. Once you find yourself, you sit down and have a ...

MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Frank "The Trip" Tripucka
2008-06-04 01:00:00 Would you think a guy who never threw more touchdowns than interceptions in his career would ever get his number retired? I would have said, "Hell no", before I learned that Mr. Francis M.J. "Frank" Tripucka did. The Denver Broncos have retired exactly three jerseys in its storied history. The two obvious ones of John Elway's #7 and Floyd Little's #44 stood out, but then I noticed that ole #18 was retired long before both. In the coming weeks, Guru will be doing his run down of the greatest Broncos ever to wear certain numbers. It promises to be a very good series, but I can guarantee that his 18th post will be quite dull. Since only one guy has ever worn the number. Frank Tripucka was an All American in 1948 while playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, going 9-0-1 that season finishing #2 in the nation. He was drafted number one overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1949 draft, but the Eagles traded Tr...

Business Trip Drinking
2008-06-03 09:11:00 The problem with drinking on business trips is that you drink like it's the weekend. But it's not the weekend. Last night was not Friday and today is not Saturday, the day you get to sleep it off. Today is Tuesday and it's a work day just like any other weekday work day. Back in Los Angeles, I may drink on a weekday night, but only in moderation because I’m either getting to know a user I’m about to fuck or I’m drinking with a user I already know who I’m about to fuck. The fuck is the thing. When you’re on a business trip, the fuck is a perk, but it’s not the thing. The drink is the thing. When you go on a business trip, especially overseas, there's always someone from the local office who takes you out to a great dinner and buys you drinks all night. That was the case last night here in Japan. After the restaurant, we checked out a couple of bars, but guess what? Nobody goes out drinking on Monday night in Tokyo either. They all have ...

Kasia's Field Trip
2008-06-03 08:36:00 Kasia on the far rightKasia's Montessori preschool/kindergarten made a field trip today to the city's Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens. I tagged along as a parent volunteer. Highlights included ringing the friendship bell -- the guide explained that whatever couple rang the bell stayed friends forever, so the kids lined by two by two to ring the bell with their BFFs. I rang the bell with Kasia, so one of the teachers said, "Now Kasia, you'll be best friends with your dad forever." To which I replied, "Is this guaranteed to get us through her teenage years?" The other memorable moment (not exactly a highlight) was when kids lined up at the wishing well to make their wishes. Kasia turned to me and quietly said, "I wished that everyone who died would be alive again." (No doubt in reference to Portia, GrandDad and Uncle Doug.) *sigh* It's been a very sad year.

#153: A WEEKEND TRIP TO FUKUI 2 [THUGLIFE]
2008-06-02 06:53:00 OMG it was an unbelievably crazy trip... Just one day before, I and my friend had decided to go to Fukui to see the Kireek's gig. And actually I have a lot of old friends there, so I really wanted to meet them again too. We ride on Dj Hi-C's car, and had arrived there around 5 PM on Saturday. We were enjoying the party till really late night... Any foreigners don't know about Fukui at all, I guess. Actually even Japanese don't know so much either. But in fact, there is a really deep and real music culture! Guess what, both Dj Akakabe (2002 DMC world battle champion) and Dj Yasa (2007 DMC world team champion) came from same hometown, Fukui! Can you believe that such a tiny town has produced two world champions! And even Techno, Rock, House, Break Dance, etc etc... those genres' level are very high too. A guy who got the second place of some big break dance world championship is from Fukui. You know Richie Hawtin's recent Japan tour was in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Fukui!! lol Anywa...

John McCain: The 8 Trip Wonder
2008-06-02 01:57:00 John McCain has been making a big deal lately about his eight trips to Iraq. As he keeps reminding Americans, Barack Obama by contrast has made one visit to Iraq.McCain makes it sound as though he has intimate, in-depth knowledge of the situation on the ground in Iraq thanks to the fleeting glimpses of Iraqi life gleaned during his famous walkabouts. The more likely version is that his views are derived not so much from choreographed walkabouts, but from the opinions offered by American military personnel and embassy officials.Whether in relation to his position on Cuba or his Iraqi visits, McCain has a need to come across as muscular. He certainly appears to relish holding his Iraq trip record over the head of his younger Democratic rival. Perhaps some of this is compensation for perceived vulnerabilities. After all much has been made of his advanced years. His medical history has even been called into question. He spoke of the relaxed drive from the airport during a recent visit t...

A trip to the zoo
2008-05-31 08:31:00 Today my son?s Kindergarten class went to the zoo. He woke up early this morning out of pure excitement. One of the things we did after breakfast was make his sack lunch. This is the first time he has ever taken a lunch to school. It was a big moment (well, for his mom any way). His homework for the week was to decorate his lunch bag. He created a classic picture of himself (with two of his friends) in outer space fighting green aliens. :o) You have to love the imagination of a 6 year old. :o)A note went home earlier this week stating the kids could bring a camera to the zoo as long as it could be worn around the neck. We only have one camera and I didn?t feel comfortable lending it to my son for the day. So we picked up a disposable one and I used green ribbon and tape so he could wear it around his neck. Any way, I worried about him all day. I wish I could have been one of the parent volunteers, but I knew he was in good hands. When I went to pick him up at the school he had a ...

Trip to Mysore and Shravanabelagola
2008-05-27 14:16:00 One of the perks of doing my AC here in India is the travel to the different interesting sites. And in this country, there are a lot of places with rich history. I've blogged about some of the places I was able to visit along with the other interns in Infosys' InStep program and the most interesting trip we've had so far is the 2-day trip to Mysore and Shravanabelagola.Mysore (pronounced "my-sore") is a city that takes about three hours of travel from Bangalore and it used to be the capital of the state that's why it has very interesting buildings like the Mysore Palace. There's also a cathedral there that's inspired my Neo-Gothic architecture (according to one of the interns) and a nearby hilltop town called Chamundi. Mysore is also home to Infosys' biggest campus and it's really like a modern town within the city. That campus is thee times the size of the one in Bangalore and the buildings are more diverse in design-- there's a building that looks like the Roman Colosseum...

Elegy for the road trip
2008-05-27 12:25:00 When I was a wee Tami, I didn?t play with dolls much. Oh, I had the requisite Barbies and baby dolls, but they didn?t really capture my imagination. Instead, my best friend Carol and I spent a lot of time playing with our vast collection of Fisher-Price Little People. Remember those things? Between us, Carol and I had two A-frame houses, two traditional houses, two farms, a Holiday Inn and a McDonald?s?enough for an entire Little People town. We would stretch our little homes and buildings along the long, shaded deck behind my house and create stories for our little families: we would take our little parents to work; take the little kids to school; engineer little family squabbles; and?this was the most fun?take the whole little gang on road trips. The woods behind my house became Yosemite National Park. The drop from the deck to the lawn below became the Grand Canyon. My Fisher-Price travel fantasies eventually matured into a new way to play road trip. My friends and I would positio...
