Corey Crawford: His Case for the Calder Memorial Trophy
2011-03-02 02:47:00 It's now March, and enough of the 2010-11 season has passed that we can now start looking around the league at the top rookies with a larger sample-size and begin talking about who deserves to be named the NHL's top rookie for the season. And it's painfully obvious that Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford should bring the Calder Memorial Trophy back to Chicago....
Jonathan Toews: His Case for the Hart Memorial Trophy
2011-03-01 04:40:00 When the season began, Jonathan Toews was coming off one of the most historic seasons in the history of not only the Chicago Blackhawks, but hockey in general. He made the Canadian Olympic roster as one of the bottom four forwards, and emerged by the end of the tournament as the Most Outstanding Forward. The Blackhawks signed him to a five-year deal, locking up their young captain for at least the first eight seasons of his career. And the Hawks competed for, and won a division championship, followed by the historic run to the Stanley Cup championship that ended with Toews winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason's most valuable player. Certainly he couldn't follow that season up...
Blackhawks: Corey Crawford A Front-Runner For The Calder Trophy
2011-01-23 06:51:00 If we use last year as a barometer, Corey Crawford should be considered a front-runner for the Calder Trophy. Saturday's matinee in Detroit featured two fantastic young goalies in the Central Division: Crawford and Detroit's Jimmy Howard. Howard was the runner-up to Buffalo's Tyler Myers for the 2010 Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie. Looking at their performances, the comparison between Howard and Crawford should give Blackhawks fans confidence that Chicago's young netminder can win the hardware this year....
Blackhawks Corey Crawford Worthy of Calder Trophy Consideration
2011-01-13 05:22:00 At some point, Corey Crawford is going to sneak into the discussion for the top rookie honor in the NHL. After consecutive shutouts, Crawford is clearly establishing himself as the top rookie netminder in the league. He is now tied with Nashville's Anders Lindback for the rookie lead with two shutouts, he boasts the best goals against average of any rookie goalie with 10 games played (2.14), and his 15 wins are now only one behind Philadelphia's Sergei Bobrovsky's rookie lead. In fact, Crawford's goals against is now tied for third in the entire NHL, and his .920 save percentage is in the league's top 15 as well. Certainly San Jose's Logan Couture, Colorado's Kevin Shattenkirk and Carolina's Jeff...
The Heisman trophy presentation is utterly unwatchable
2010-12-11 23:17:00 I'm pretty sure I love college football. I regularly spend Saturdays tuned in from late-morning Big Ten games till the late-night West Coast game that ends after midnight, I prefer it to the pros, and it was I who started snarling at my friends when they suggested that we turn off the late-night Hawaii-San Jose State snoozefest during our all-day liveblog a few weeks back. One of the most naturally occurring and entertaining debates between such diehard fans of a sport is "Who's the best player?" It's a topic that people don't just develop strong opinions on, but also spend a lot of time and effort researching. Logically, the Heisman Trophy, the most storied and prestigious award for the most outstanding college football player and its unveiling should capture my attention with ease. But I have no plans to watch on Saturday, and have even made a mental note to avoid it, because I know that if by some cursed set of circumstances it's on the TV while I'm in the room and I s...
Auburn's Cam Newton Deserves the Heisman Trophy
2010-12-05 01:38:00 With their blowout win in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday night, Auburn clinched a spot in the BCS National Championship Game. And Auburn's quarterback, Cam Newton, should have locked up the Heisman Trophy. But did he? Or did his father cost him the award?...

2010-10-13 04:40:00 Okay maybe I'm getting a bit ahead of myself but can you blame me? It seems like just yesterday the Blackhawks sign the Hoss. The Stanley Cup was in Sidney Crosby's bed and Mike Kiley was writing for Blackhawks Confidential. Oh how things have changed. Some for the better, some for the worse, but it was right around lunchtime when Mr. Kiley ran out to inform me of the mammoth contract Marian Hossa had just signed with the Blackhawks. A Red Wing who can't win the Cup? What good is he? What about Marty Havlat? Those questions were popping into the minds of Blackhawks fans everywhere. And now he needs surgery? Out til Thanksgiving? Man I hope the guys...
I’m Going to Need Some Trophy Polish
2010-09-09 17:05:00 The phone rang about 12:45. This is not particularly significant for our phone typically rings throughout the course of the day. It’s but one of the many ways that we keep in touch with the world around us. So the phone ringing at 12:45 caused little reaction in me other than the immediate thought that I should answer it. A quick glance at the caller id told me it was my mother-in-law. Again, no significant reaction. I talk to my mother-in-law on a daily basis. I figured that she was probably calling to let me know she would be bringing the kids home from school. In fact, I may have uttered a tiny, “Sweet!” just before I answered. “Hey, Ed. Where are the twins?” “They’re right here with me. Eating lunch. Why?” “Weren’t they supposed to start school today?” “No. They start on Friday. They may start on Thursday but the teacher said she would call if that’s the case.” “Well...

Charity Shield Victory Sets United Up to Reclaim Premiership Trophy
2010-08-11 17:24:00 Manchester United finished the 2009/10 season in 2nd place, just one point behind league winners Chelsea. Sir Alex Ferguson?s side has had a brief period to regroup after the 2010 World Cup and they will be looking to bounce back strongly this season. By defeating Chelsea 3-1 in the Community Shield match at Wembley on Sunday whilst wearing the new Man Utd home shirt, this will have given the squad a huge boost going into the start of the English Premier League season. Over the last two seasons, Man Utd have not spent as much money as they would have in past seasons. This is down to the huge debts the club have and it might take years before they can make any major signings again. The fact that Cristiano Ronaldo left the club for a world record fee of 80m and Man Utd did not spend any of this, gives weight to their financial troubles. The club appear to be bringing in younger players to wear the 2010-11 Nike Man Utd shirt, including the capture of Chicharito (Javier Hernandez...

Kerr's trophy larger but Watson has better payday with "dream performances"
2010-06-28 21:04:00 Cristie Kerr's record-setting twelve stroke victory at the LPGA Championship left her in a dream-like state. Bubba Watson's teary-eyed acceptance of his first PGA Tour win at the Travelers Championship was exciting to boot as he was the last man standing in a three-man playoff. Since I could not be at both events in the tri-state area, I chose the Travelers in order to meet-up at a "tweet-up" with Patricia Hannigan (aka golfgirl from Golf Girl Media). I can't wait to see the pictures she took and I'm sure she'll post them soon. Here are pictures of Cristie Kerr, winner of the LPGA Championship and Bubba Watson, fellow left-handed golfer, victor at the Traveler's Championship and first-time winner on the PGA Tour. Kerr aced the bigger trophy (and $337,500) but Bubba Watson walked off with the larger check ($1,080,000!)
You mean to tell you don't just get a trophy for winning 11 games in a
2010-06-27 07:17:00 Chicago fans aren't exactly known for their grasp of the necessary social graces, and from all reports of Saturday night's game, this weekend has not only not been an exception, but possibly the most debauched chapter yet in the great saga of inter-city hatred and brutality, class warfare, revocation of the social contract, chaos, hysteria, men marrying riding mowers, etc, etc. So perhaps it's fitting for the two city teams to do battle over something as ridiculously inappropriate as a trophy sponsored by the company responsible for millions upon millions of oil into the Gulf Coast right now. Right now. It is spilling as I write, it will still be spilling when you read, it will be spilling afterward.
White Sox Put the 'O' in 'Oil Company Sponsored Trophy'
2010-06-12 04:10:00 Good evening, (or morning, who knows when people read blogs?) and welcome to the best day of the White Sox season. The Sox have had a better records at point this year than the current 27-33 mark they'll go into Saturday with, and they've already equaled the season-high three-game winning streak (that still sounds bad), and even with all of their struggles offensively, the Sox had a greater scoring outburst just this past Wednesday than they had Friday afternoon. And as vital as it is that at the heavily-emphasized 60-game mark that the White Sox are still pushing toward the notion that they have more to reveal about themselves, this is the best game and best win of the season because it came against the Cubs, and that matters more than ever this season*. *No, it's not because of the stupid trophy
The Cubs and White Sox Will Play for a Trophy
2010-04-26 16:25:00 **Breaking News**The Cubs and the White Sox have entered into a historic partnership today that will see the teams competing in inter league play, not only wins and losses but a new trophy called the BP Crosstown Cup.Patterned along the lines of the various trophies that are staked in some of college football greatest rivalries, the Crosstown Cup will go to the team that wins the annual 6 game match-up between the two teams. What happens if each team wins 3 games you ask? Then the winner of the 6th game claims the trophy. The Cup will be unveiled this season and should become a big part of the rivalry between the two great fan bases. The winning team will...
