Watkins & Shepard Trucking Co. cut the usual $4,000 tuition to $1,000. The company expects students to make an initial payment of $250 and pay the balance through weekly installments of $15. The reduction follows a $315,000 state grant received by the company, which expects the state assistance to be an incen-tive for the training of 63 new drivers. Training costs have been a significant obstacle to driver recruitment, said Ray Kuntz, chief executive of Watkins & Shepard, which has terminals in Helena, Missoula and Billings. Students are screened before they start the four-week training, and they are guaranteed jobs if they complete it success-fully. Ron Ellis had been employed by Birmingham-based Blackwell Logistics, which has since gone into liquidation. He had been seeking compensation for unfair dismissal. Ellis alleged that Blackwell management was attempting to reopen the firm under a new name, a move he and eight other sacked truck drivers opposed. He said he was ordered by his boss to return to Birmingham, following a trip to Felixstowe, despite pointing out that he would exceed the permitted number of driving hours if he did so. My car, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala boasts a 3.4 liter, 180 horsepower V-6 engine. The engine is much more reliable than it is quick, but I have been happy with its performance none the less. Even though my car is slow, I like to hover at about 80 MPH on the express way. Occasionally while driving on the express way, a lunatic will fly past me. If I am passed by another car I feel this as a blow to my manhood. Unless the car is in the luxury market or a sports car, I don't take the pass personally.
