The new twist on this is called Truphone Anywhere, which allows you to use Truphone to make calls even when you're not in WiFi or 3G range. How does this work? If you happen to be outside of WiFi or 3G range, but still have a GSM signal, you can ask that the call be routed over a PSTN gateway within your country. This gateway, which will be a national call within your country, will connect your call to the international destination at Truphone's "brilliant" rates. The next step? A GSM SIM frm Truphone. 2008-04-13 10:58:00 Truphone, known more for enabling WiFi calling and SMS on Nokia handsets than being a traditional wireless carrier, is now going to be just that. Truphone recently announced they have acquired the assets of SIM4travel, a UK-based mobile virtual network operator. SIM4travel is very similar to Pat Phelan's Roam4Free service which substantially cuts your mobile roaming rates. Prior to this acquisition, the only thing Truphone didn't have was the ability to make calls over GSM natively. They already did SMS-a major step along the way to being a mobile phone operator-and of course they operate on mobile phones, albeit Nokia ones over WiFi. Truphone representatives demonstrated how a call can be initiated from a handset and then routed to Truphone's server via Wi-Fi.Truphone spokesman Tim Donnelly Smith emphasized that the event at DEMOfall07 was only a demonstration and was not intended to be a commercial launch. One of the Holy Grails / Seven Wonders of the iPhone World has been loosed upon the Earth today, namely: VoIP. According to a company called Truphone, they have unlocked the secret of IP telephony on the iPhone, and demonstrated said ability today at DEMOfall 07 in San Diego. Executing commands via the Terminal (i.e., on a phone which had been Jailbreak-ed), Truphone CEO James Tagg was able to call another mobile phone using only an IP connection -- all without breaking the SIM lock. According to the company, the software is still in beta, but they soon plan to have a version which will simplify activation, and allow seamless switching between WiFi and SIM use. Clearly, an exciting development for iPhone users, but a cringe-inducing situation for AT&T. Check the video after the break to see it all in action.

Unfortunately for those that want to keep their iPhones as clean and legit as possible, this app will only work on Jailbraked (Jailbroke?) phones. The software was demonstrated at DEMOfall 2007 in San Diego today and it shows Truphone CEO James Tagg making a VoIP call to another handset. The app is still in beta, but it is expected to be available later this year. Truphone also demoed the software on other platforms including Mobile Linux, Windows Mobile and Symbian S60.
