Tuesday Night Game Thread: Cubs at D'Backs 9:40 CT/9:40 ET

Anyone else get the feeling the wheels are coming off this operation? I know, I know. It's not time to panic. It's not time to start wailing and moaning. It's not time to be afraid. But you can see the time to panic, wail and moan, and be afraid from here. Okay, so that's overstating it a bit. But I can't help but feel that this isn't the best way to start the second half. We've had some stellar pitching outings from our starting rotation lately, but we just can't seem to hit the ball. At all. I'm grateful for foul balls these days, because at least I get to see some contact. Lou's solution to our team's inability to put a bat to a ball? Cancel batting practice, of course. On the one hand, I can see the logic in this move. On the other hand, I think Lou is one "Ryan Theriot stupid decision on the basepath" away from a complete implosion. And why not? It worked last season. Just make sure you get Z to punch our shortstop and not our catcher this season. Unfortunately for...

Sorry the offense sucks Cubs still can't beat Big Ugly From the Daily Herald: Randy Johnson improved his lifetime record against the Cubs to 13-0 Monday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks shut them out 2-0. Cubs batters managed 2 hits off the 44-year-old Johnson and none against the D'Backs bullpen as they lost their third in four games on this road trip. That was enough for Cubs manager Lou Piniella, who followed through on something he said in Houston Sunday. "We've played four games on this road trip here, and we've scored 1, 1 and zero," Piniella said, just warming up. "That's not going to get it done anywhere, I can tell you that. But the pitching has been good, which is a positive. "And tomorrow, we're canceling batting practice, and the next day, we're going to cancel batting practice. We're going to come out here and just stretch and play. That's it. I'm tired of seeing balls flying all over batting practice, and when the (darn) game starts, I see very little or ...

Tuesday Night Game Thread: Cubs vs. American League

There really isn't much to say about this game tonight. Some of us like it, some of us loathe it. Either way, it just might wind up meaning something to us this season. Let's hope for a big National League victory with no injuries to our guys. Lineups: H. Ramirez ss (is pretty cool) C. Utley 2b  (in trouble with NYC fans) L. Berkman 1b  (can suck it) A. Big Z is bigger than Big Papi. Does that make him Bigger Papi? Mr. Miles takes a look back at spring training questions What were we concerned about back then? From the Daily Herald: Back in March, the questions, concerns and prognostications for the Cubs were these: ? Can Ryan Dempster crack the starting rotation against the likes of Jon Lieber, and if not, could he work as a middle reliever? ? Bob Howry had the inside edge as closer because of his "experience," with the big question being whether Kerry Wood could work on back-to-back days. ? Geovany Soto had a nice September, and the Cubs handed him the starting job at catcher. Is he for real? What about his weight, which looks to be a little high? And what do the Cubs do if he can't play? Funny how things turn out. As the Cubs take an all-star break, with seven of eight selections going to the All-Star Game in New York (Wood has a blister on his finger), it's easy to play hindsight. So with 20-20 vision guiding us, let's tak...

Guess who's back? Toothpick: The toothpick has been around longer than our species. The skulls of Neanderthals, as well as Homo sapiens, have shown clear signs of having teeth that were picked with a tool.[2] It is the oldest instrument for dental cleaning. Toothpicks are well-known in all cultures. Before the toothbrush was invented, one cleaned one's teeth with hard and soft dental woods. Toothpicks made of bronze have been found as burial objects in prehistoric graves in Northern Italy and in the East Alps. It was also well-known in Mesopotamia. There are delicate, artistic examples made of silver in antiquity, as well as from mastic wood with the Romans. In the 17th century toothpicks were luxury objects similar to jewellery items. They were formed from precious metal and set with expensive stones. Frequently they were artistically stylized and enameled. The first toothpick-manufacturing machine was patented in 1872, by Silas Noble and J. P. Cooley.[3] Nowadays other means of ...
Tuesday Afternoon Watercooler and Trade Rumors Diary
2008-07-08 16:14:00
Trade rumors involving the Cubs are a hoppin'. We start off with the The Sun Times, who think the Cubs should run right out to their local Walgreens and pick up a Rich Harden. The Cubs have spent a lot of time on the phone recently with Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane trying to pry away right-hander Rich Harden. Expect the phone lines to start burning a little hotter beginning today. Beane's in a tough spot. This season was supposed to be about rebuilding -- at least, that's what he told us last winter after dealing pitcher Dan Haren to the Arizona Diamondbacks and outfielder Nick Swisher to the White Sox for a combined nine prospects, including five starting pitchers. Then the A's -- even after dropping two straight to the White Sox over the weekend -- made a run in the watered-down AL West, sitting six games behind the fragile Los Angeles Angels. (snip) Now seems like a bad time for Beane to pull the trigger, no matter how much the Cubs call. Waiting for Harden ...

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008: A Swedish Wedding - not in Helsingborg
2008-07-08 10:43:00
What I think:Last Saturday, I went to a wedding with my girlfriend. It was the matrimony of a couple of friends she's known for a number of years. The wedding itself was to take place in a church in a town with an unpronounceable name, near a town called Hr,which I would wrongly (and very inappropriately) pronounce Whore. But first, we stopped off to visit the bride-to-be, so that my girlfriend could help her get ready, and offer moral support on this most important, yet stressful, day. This was in a town called Hrby (which is pronounced rather unlike Herbie), which is located just over an hour's drive away from Helsingborg. When we got to the church, we parked about a short walk away, and made our way to the grounds. This is where I learned my first lesson about Swedish weddings: you have to shake hands with, and introduce yourself to, everyone. There were about a hundred people there, so this took some time. I don't think I've said "Mark" as many times in all my life as I did...

Sully advocates medicating Cubs Though he stops short of calling them Bipolar Betty. From the Trib: The Cubs have shown a split personality of late, looking like a slightly better-than-average team the last three weeks after performing like world beaters the previous three. They haven't won two games in a row since their sweep of the White Sox June 27-29, after winning nine straight from May 26 through June 3. So who are the real Cubs? The team that won 16 of 20 games going into the dreaded Cooperstown trip, or the one that has lost 10 of 17 games since? With the All-Star break only six days away, the Cubs still remain a mystery. They've held on to first place in the National League Central since May 26 and still have the best record in the NL. But nagging doubts remain, and some believe they should be better than their 53-36 record. The Cubs are a combined 29-10 against Pittsburgh and the atrocious NL West teams, but only 24-26 against everyone else. They've failed to win on the...

"The Pap Attack" tells us all about the PNAC crowd, the "pay no price, bear no burden" bunch......Sweet Mother of Abraham Lincoln! First Satullo "finds the nut" - and now Smerky too??!! Kudos to him, actually (now wait for the "other shoe to drop")......and by the way, Crooks and Liars tells us here that the Federal Marriage Amendment, which of course would ban gay marriage (an amendment I don't support, by the way - call me whatever names you want, within reason) was reintroduced this week; that's ridiculous enough, but two of the original sponsors were "Diaper Dave" Vitter and Larry Craig, so with that in mind, here's a "tribute" to Senator Wide Stance, who gets a mention in this spoof of Baba Wawa's book (long setup, I know)......and this has been cracking me up all day (h/t Avedon Carol)......and finally, how awesome is Russ Feingold anyway (h/t The Daily Kos).
Tuesday Gamethread/ Cubs at Giants 7:15 Left 9:15 Middle 10:15 Right
2008-07-02 00:15:00
Never been there, but I've heard its nice I don’t know about everyone one else, but after witnessing this weekends dismal display of pitching and less than stellar offense it was nice to see the team rebound on both fronts last night.   So the losing streak was at least interrupted and tonight they try for a new streak, hopefully one in the W column.  Of course the Cubs are without Aramis, who is still home for "family matters" (which I believe is because his wife is having a kid, but nobody seems to be printing that), Soriano is still out, D Lee is still a double play machine, and left field has been manned by a combination of Carrot Top and Eric Patterson's impersonation of an outfielder. But fear not, we still got DeRo! (for the record, that last part wasn't sarcasm) Jason Marquis (6-4, 4.96 ERA) is pitching for the boys in blue tonight.  He got a little roughed up by Baltimore last week, but what can you do.  I'm hoping for a strong rebound to...

DeRosa steps up to the plate And sends a couple of souvenirs to the bleachers Monday was also the first time DeRosa had hit a home run in 17 games. He had just three RBIs in his last 10 starts, but he smacked a two-run shot off Giants pitcher Barry Zito (3-12) in the fifth. Then he added a grand slam in the eighth. He tied a career high with six RBIs. Both balls were hit to the same spot in left-center field. The first scored Geovany Soto, who reached on a double and also had a single and a walk. The slam, the third of DeRosa's career and the second of the Cubs' season, plated Ryan Theriot, Derrek Lee and Soto, who all reached on walks. "It was just nice to get back on the winning side," DeRosa said. Speaking of Zito, DeRosa said, "You walk runners and you put guys in scoring position, eventually somebody's going to get a hit." So they didn't have Aramis or Soriano, who cares. Lou is bad cop, Rasputin is good cop? Who do you want to visit? When Cubs manager Lou Piniella amb...
Medicare fees to doctors to fall starting Tuesday

WASHINGTON (AP) - One unpleasant task lawmakers will have over the July 4 recess is explaining to seniors why they didn’t stop a 10 percent fee cut, going into effect Tuesday, for doctors who treat Medicare patients. Physicians have been running ads hinting that patients may find doctors less willing to treat them. In a particularly vitriolic ...

Tuesday Night Game Thread: O's at Cubs 7:05 CT/8:05 ET
2008-06-24 15:39:00
Give us back our Rocky Cherry!!! I can't really think of anything witty or funny or thematic for this game thread, so I'll just tell you that I'm happy to see Sean Marshall (aka "Legolas" or "Keebler"---seriously, check out the ears) and I'm not too happy to see Andy MacPhail. Also, I'm hoping to hatch a plot to kidnap Rocky Cherry and bring him home sometime during the game, since Hendry saw fit to trade away all our porn star-named players, leaving us with virtually no porn-related jokes for this entire season. I will also point out that, if MacPhail hadn't gone to Baltimore and gotten rid of all the sucky players that he just HAD TO HAVE when he was here, we could be facing Neifi Perez, LaTroy Hawkins and Corey Patterson tonight, making this a much more interesting game. Additionally, we should all get a good look at Brian Roberts tonight, so we can see what we're missing. Maybe we can even put he and DeRosa through some kind of American Gladiators-esque competition to se...

Tuesday is a huge night for me. I am a game show junkie and tonight is game show heaven. But first, tonight also marks the premiere of the Rescue Me Minisodes on FX at 10/9c. They are 5 minutes each! How cute! Now on to my favorite part of the night (week, really). First up is Celebrity Family Feud on NBC at 8/7c. Hosted by Al Roker (Today show co-host), it pits 2 sets of families against each other twice an episode for a chance to win up to $50 for their charity. Tonight’s episode features Ice-T & family will playing for Unity 2 against Joan & Melissa Rivers & family, who will be playing for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Following them is Raven-Symone & family will be playing for the American Red Cross against Wayne Newton & his family, who will be playing for The USO. The second game show tonight is going to be my personal favorite, Wipeout on ABC at 8/7c. Twenty-four contenders compete in an extreme obstacle course designed to provide the most cras...
Tuesday Morning Lack of Headlines Headlines
2008-06-24 09:10:00
Sorry everyone, with the off day yesterday, and the Cubs doing well there is a distinct shortage of stories.   Insert pun here The big news today? We didn't trade DeRosa! 3 months ago. Several trade scenarios had Roberts coming to the Cubs in exchange for various combinations of players including Sean Marshall, Jason Marquis, Kevin Hart, Ronny Cedeno, Rich Hill, Seam Gallagher, Tyler Colvin, and Felix Pie.  Outfielder Eric Patterson's name also was mentioned in some reports I'm sure DeRosa LOVES reliving all these questions again.  Think we ahould ask how his 8th grade dance went too?  Seriously people, this is the big news today. Our Dear Old Friend And the arrival of the Orioles means the return of McPhail After a weekend listening to Ozzie talk everything McPhail says is even more boring than he indended it to be.  He's looking forward to seeing people, blah blah blah, wants the Orioles to win, blah blah, hopes the Cubs do well starting Friday. &nb...
Tuesday Night Game Thread: Cubs at Rays 6:10 CT/7:10 ET
2008-06-17 17:28:00
How can anyone not like the Cubs? Tonight the Cubs pack up their vericose veins and white shoes and head to Del Boca Vista to take on the perennial laughing stock Devil Rays. Only this year they aren't so funny. In fact, they're pretty damn good. The Cubs have the best record in baseball. Tampa has the SECOND best record in baseball. To combat this threat to our supremacy in the baseball universe, the Cubs have called up Matt Murton. Heh. Suck on that, Tampa. Tonight Ryan Dempster takes the mound against Scott Kazmir. I don't know about you guys, but anyone who spells the last name "Cashmere" as "Kazmir" looks like a commie pinko to me. My point is that if the Cubs win, America wins. Tonight's game is on Comcast (again). Lineups to come.
TUESDAY AFTERNOON RUMOURS
2008-06-17 12:46:00
Hey kids, how do you feel about A.J. Burnett? He feel fan-flippin-tastic about YOU! "Toronto Smells Funny." Who likes rumours? With the Toronto Blue Jays expected to shop A.J. Burnett over the next several weeks leading up to the trade deadline, the Chicago Cubs could be a possible destination, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. The Blue Jays are most likely looking for middle-infield help, and while it is not known whether the Cubs have the pieces to pull off a deal, Burnett has stated publicly that he would welcome a trade to the Windy City. Burnett has $30 million left on his current contract and can opt out after this season. And some more juicy tidbits: The Chicago Cubs are looking for a boost in their starting rotation and have let the San Diego Padres know that they are interested in pursuing starting pitchers Randy Wolf or Greg Maddux, reports ESPN's Peter Gammons. The Cubs have also let the Seattle Mariners know that they are interested in Erik Bedard if he becomes availabl...

Thanks for showing up, guys. You have to pay your way back to A-ball. Vaya con Dios, Hall of Fame Game It was nice knowing you. From the Trib: Maybe it's appropriate the Hall of Fame Game went out this way. Maybe-no, make that certainly-Cubs manager Lou Piniella was right: This exhibition, at least on this day, wasn't worth the trip. The sky erupted with thunder and lightning and a deluge stoked by buffeting winds. The ensuing hail gave the scene a nice wrath-of-God touch. Fans, nearly 10,000 of them, had packed Doubleday Field on Monday to see the final installment of a tradition dating to 1940, but ending this afternoon. The crowd scurried from metal benches toward the exits and whatever cover they could find outside the grandstand. There wasn't much. Soon the central New York sky temporarily cleared and the drenched were allowed back into the historic ballpark. Hope? Nope. The rains and the wrath returned. The game Major League Baseball no longer wants to play, the game Pinie...

Tuesday night roundup
2008-06-11 06:01:00
BY ADAM RONIS Lastings Milledge hit a two-run homer with two out in the top of the ninth inning off Matt Capps to give the Nationals a 7-6 win. Milledge has started slow with five homers and 25 RBIs and isn't in a great lineup, but he has 10 steals and will get better as he sees more major league pitching. Ron Belliard is expected to see more playing time and he started at second base. He went 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. Not only does Nate McLouth have 14 homers, but he hit his 20th double. He also stole his seventh base and he should be more aggressive on the basepaths as the season progresses. Ryan Doumit was a guy I targeted at catcher because he also gets time at other positions. Unfortuantely, I didn't land him in any drafts. He will see most of his time at catcher and is a good hitter. He went 4-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. He is hitting .345 with seven homers and 18 RBIs. Jon Rauch picked up his 13th save. In a league where I can use only one reliever, ...

(Disclaimer: Mark and doc blume, don't read this diary) So I know it's not good to say so, but I'm feeling pretty good about our little group these days. Soriano? Infuriating, but I can live with the HRs. Fukudome? Taught our entire team patience at the plate. Suck on that, Gerald Perry. Lee? The view from the rear makes up for a lot. Kerry? Badass. Soto? Badass. Marmol? Badass. I don't even want to kill Theriot at this point in time. See where I'm going with this? Tonight Chipper and his .420 average leads the Braves into Wrigley to take on our boys in blue. While on the one hand, I'm kind of cheering for someone to hit .400 again, I'm not really sure I want that person to be "Chipper" Jones. What kind of grown man allows people to call him "Chipper?" Wrong, wrong, wrong. I can't respect that. Despite the fact that the Braves have the reincarnation of Ted Williams, or at least his head, in their lineup, the team is only at .500 for the year. Unfortunately for us, Tom Glavi...

Tuesday "There Are No Headlines" Headlines
2008-06-10 15:45:00
As you may expect, it's a slow news day in Cubdom.  Without a game yesterday, and the lack of any real information coming from the clubhouse it looks like the media has gone back to those old staples. bringing the news, even when we don't have any First up:  Will he or Won't he? Did you guys know some guy named Cuban want to buy the team? "All the accountants will start doing their things. Hopefully I'll be in the mix. I think I have a shot," he said. The good news on this front is that he wants to buy the stadium as well as the team.  Oh, and Zell says the Trib wants to have a minority stake. Gordo thinks that we're better from catcher to center I can't really argue the Barrett reference, but the Pie v Edmonds/Johnson will surely get some riled up Also, Edmonds wants to make friends ''Geo does a great job behind the plate, and he's doing a great job of calling games,'' Edmonds said. ''Our backup guys are great, too. I mean, Ronny Cedeno's unbelievabl...

A story over at Tech News World is warning Windows users to update their computers with the new June patch coming on Tuesday, or you could find your system getting "hijacked".Microsoft plans to issue seven security updates -- three of which are rated "critical" -- in its monthly Patch Tuesday release next week. Several of the patches deal with preventing remote code execution (RCE). The listed fixes are designed to correct a variety of problems with Internet Explorer that affect Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003. //--> One critical fix focuses on the way Bluetooth, a wireless protocol utilizing short-range communications technology, works with various Windows components and the Windows XP, Server 2003 and Vista operating systems. Tuesday roundup

BY ADAM RONIS Roy Halladay pitched six innings? No, that's not a misprint. He threw 102 pitches and was pulled, but he was in long enough to win. He allowed six hits, two runs, walked one and struck out three. He is 7-5 with a2.94 ERA. Aaron Harang hasn't pitched as bad as his 2-8 record indicates. The Reds don't score when he pitches. Allowing three runs in six innings in Philly is a good game these days. He has a 3.86 ERA and 78/20 K/BB ratio, so he's good buy low candidate if an owner is harping on his record. Brad Lidge issued two walks and a hit in a one-run game and escaped unscathed for his 15th save. Kaz Matsui went 4-for-4 with two runs and is batting .278. He's a useful middle infielder because he steals bases and scores runs. In his second start since missing five weeks with a strained groin, Wandy Rodriguez was very good against the Pirates. He threw six scoreless innings, allowing five hits, one walk and struck out three for the win. He is 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA. He s...
