How Sad Illegal Immigrants Having A Hard Time Getting College Tuition Loans
2008-07-07 21:39:00 Only the USA TODAY would make this sound like a sad story. Some states are making it harder for illegal immigrants to attend college by denying in-state tuition benefits or banning undocumented students. In the past two years, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma have refused in-state tuition benefits to students who entered the USA illegally with their parents but grew up and went to school in the state. That represents a reversal from earlier this decade, when 10 states passed laws allowing in-state rates for such students. This summer, South Carolina became the first state to bar undocumented students from all public colleges and universities.North Carolina's community colleges in May ordered its 58 campuses to stop enrolling undocumented students after the state attorney general said admitting them may violate federal law."The new trend is to kick illegal aliens out of college altogether," says William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee, which o...

MA Dem Governor: No In-State Tuition for Illegals!
2008-05-22 17:05:00 I had to read this story two times to make sure I read it correctly. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has decided against stepping in and aiding illegal immigrants in their pursuit of in-state tuition for college: Governor Deval Patrick has decided against taking action to allow illegal immigrants to pay resident tuition and fees at state colleges and universities this fall, an administration official said yesterday, crushing advocates who were counting on the governor to deliver on a pledge to support the students. Â more stories like thisEarlier this year, Patrick said he was considering ways to offer illegal immigrants in-state rates, such as issuing a regulation, adding that it would be “the right thing to do.” The governor declined to comment yesterday, but an administration source who spoke on condition of anonymity said Patrick decided that there were “significant legal impediments” to that approach. The governor will still support legislation on ...
Obama's college tuition plan
2008-05-16 22:58:00 Barack Obama wants to give undergraduate students $4000.00 tuition. In a time of virtually free information and the ability to distribute learning digitally or through teleconferencing at a low cost, college tuition continues to increase faster than the rate of inflation. Some schools have billion-dollar endowments (Harvard's is 35,000,000,000.), but the reason that colleges charge so much, according to this article, is simply because they can. Now, setting aside that singles and the majority of parents with children who won't attend college will be subsidizing children who are probably better able to pay; the dubious proposition that the United States needs more sociologists; and that by adding some fraud magnet, BS service requirement, the program will be much more inefficient and costly; why wouldn't universities simply increase tuition by $4000.00? It's not like most of them are under-enrolled. The left equivalent of gas tax holiday- or worse, it's a difficult thing t...

Tuition Prices Hurting More Than Students
2008-04-28 14:43:00 The simple fact is that high tuition costs are hurting everyone in Nova Scotia. Over $2 million dollars have been written off as part of the Provincial Student Loan program. In addition to this figure is $10 million which has been turned over to the government from the Royal Bank for recovery. Student Loans are counting for almost 2/3 of all debts that the province has written off since 1999.The 2008 budget, being released tomorrow, is supposed to have good news for students but how far they plan to go is still unknown. The written off loans are from over 400 students who will now have bad credit to deal with for at least the next 7 years. Tax payers will have to swallow these debts since the loans are now paid direct to the province in an effort to lower the interest charges.Related LinksChronicle Herald
Planning for Your Child's College Education
2008-04-14 16:00:00 Anyone will tell you that having children is expensive. Food, clothing, housing, soccer lessons, it all adds up but the biggest financial worry is college; given today's prices, if my four children were to get four-year degrees at private universities it would cost approximately $380,000 and the price is only going up. By the time they actually get to college I expect it could be well on the way to half a million dollars.Someone recently asked us how we are planning on paying for our children's educations and the answer might surprise you. We aren't. At least not in the way most parents are planning. One of the biggest financial mistakes parents make, besides carrying enormous consumer debt, is paying for their children's university educations. If the numbers I've quoted above don't convince you then I'm not sure anything else I can say will do the trick but here's a few things to think about:1. You can't afford it. Unless you're making an income greater than 99% of th...

College Expenses: Should parents pay for their children's tuition?
2008-04-07 21:14:00 A lot of our married friends have been having kids lately, and as a result some of them have started saving for their kid's future college education.I think it is admirable to be planning ahead, and ensuring that your children get an education. But my question is this: Should parents be paying for all of their children's education in the first place?Over at Llama money they had a similar discussion that struck a chord with me, so I thought I would give my take on this as well. When I was growing up my parents were never well off as my father worked at a local church food shelter ministering to others in their neediest of times. We didn't have a lot, but we had what we needed. We learned a good work ethic, how to serve others and of course the value of a dollar (much easier to do this when you don't have much). When I was in high school it was made clear to me that I would need to get good grades, and try for college scholarships in order to pay for my education. My parents wou...

MIT to be tuition-free for families earning less than $75,000 a year
2008-03-08 10:07:00 Pretty insane news! I am proud to belong to MIT when I know that nearly 30 percent of MIT students will soon have all tuition charges covered! The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) today announced its financial aid program for 2008-2009. Increases in financial aid will make it possible for a larger fraction of MIT students to have their tuition and fees completely covered. I received the following newsletter via the MIT alumni association:Under the new plan, which will take effect in the 2008-2009 academic yearFamilies earning less than $75,000 a year will have all tuition covered. For parents with total annual income below $75,000 and typical assets, MIT will ensure that all tuition charges are covered with an MIT scholarship, federal and state grants, and/or outside scholarship funds. Nearly 30 percent of MIT students fall into this tuition-free category. For families earning less than $75,000 a year, MIT will eliminate the student loan expectation. MIT will no longer exp...

Tuition-Free Law School for Activists? Am I Dreaming? No. It's Real.
2008-01-16 06:02:00 It's not a dream. It's not a fantasy. At first blush this may be no different then full boat scholarships at other law schools, but this one really does smell different. Scholarship at the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law in Washington, D.C. is based upon your commitment to advocacy and justice and has a highly diverse student body including ethnicity, age, and real-world experience. It is clinic-centered and filled with practicing attorneys. As most of you likely know well, many would-be public interest legal careers founder on the sharp rocks of law school debt. Pressed to pay back huge loans, many talented law graduates opt for the highest available paycheck. And, seeing this dynamic, many other talented POTENTIAL law students, who are committed to the fight for justice, are deterred from even seeking a legal education. To address this dilemna, the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC-DCSL) has embarked upon an ambitious plan to raise sufficient funds t...

Online Poker tournament lets Marine pay tuition bill
2008-01-10 15:57:00 I was just reading a feel good story this morning about Shippensburg University’s Josh Froment. Josh Froment is a Marine that will be going to Iraq soon and likes to play online poker ....he sounds like a right smart feller , but he was having problems paying his tuition bill for college . Josh had took out loans and obtained credit cards to get through school. And the strategy backfired: The credit card payments multiplied and other expenses, such as rent, utilities and groceries, began to take their toll as well. He had to drop out of college and went to work full time at the local Wal-Mart....“I was at the point where I was paying $350 a month on credit cards alone,” Froment said. “The $600 I was making every two weeks, that just paid all the bills. I lived paycheck to paycheck and lived off ramen noodles.” Seems like about this time Josh got his start playing online poker in freerolls . He won 9 bucks in one and says , “From there, I use...
