Subaru Turbocharged Cars Stoped Sales in Australia
2008-04-09 17:19:00 Subaru Australia has stopped shipment of cars fitted with the company's 2.5-litre turbo engine. The stop affects Forester XT, Liberty GT and WRX models. A STRANGE engine noise has left about $50 million worth of brand-new, high-end Subarus languishing in Australian warehouses and showrooms. The Japanese carmaker yesterday suspended worldwide sales of several Subaru models after identifying ``less than 10 instances'' of excessive big-end bearing wear in models using its high-performance 2.5-litre turbocharged engine. The potential problem affects brand-new Forester XT, Impreza WRX and WRX STI, and Liberty GT hatches, sedans and wagons built since early January. Only 171 cars have so far been delivered to Australian customers. Another 1062 will sit idle in Subaru's warehouses and showrooms throughout the country while the company investigates the problem. Customers with non-turbocharged 2.5-litre and six-cylinder engines are not affected. Subaru spokesman Da...
BMW Considering Replace M-series With Smaller Turbocharged Engine
2008-03-29 10:40:00 BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer hinted recently that major changes could be in store for the automaker?s engine lineup. In yet another example of the shift away from larger displacement powerplants, Reithofer has said that he would like to phase out diesel V-8 engines ?across the board,? as well as turning to six-cylinder engines with turbos to lead the vaunted M division. The BMW Chief told German magazine Auto Motor und Sport that he would make such moves to reduce emissions and decrease fuel consumption in the average BMW, even with the M cars. He envisions M cars of the future as being lighter than they are now, and making use of engines along the lines of the company?s current twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six.While forced induction may not seem particularly in line with the standing M philosophy, we think that the idea of shedding weight to aid performance sounds wonderfully promising. And though we doubt BMW will get back down to the featherweight days of the original M3, this ...

Ford developing turbocharged F-150
2008-01-30 20:28:00 Dodge started a trend with the mighty (flawed) V10-powered Ram. Ford is now rumoured to be reenacting that scene with a turbocharged F150.Pickuptruck.com says the Raptor, as it is codenamed, will be longer than the standard vehicle. Lower suspension, wider track, uprated brakes, Fox Racing-developed shocks, are just some of the “improvements” expected. Standard tyre size will range between 30 and 35 inches, thus stupefying almost anything else next to it.A V8 turbo is not out of the question, something in excess of 500 bhp/ 373kW, and top speeds not normally associated with an event of this magnitude. Looks will be vastly different from the pictures you see of the standard vehicle. We are by no means averse to such a development; as car nuts we get sweaty palms over such news. Yet we cannot help but ask ourselves, where on earth would this Raptor be driving at high speeds? California maybe. Autobahn? Probably not. Definitely not in mainstream Australia. These aren’t earth-shatt...

Car Insurance - Driver's Education Now Turbocharged
2007-11-23 05:20:00 Driver's education is advantageous when looking to lower rates for car insurance. Today's driver's education is very different. Originally taught in schools in the 1950s- it was a result of the great highway building boom. Originally driver's education was just to teach kids how to pass a driver's test, now there is a whole new generation of driver's education classes that stress safety and real life practice. The old classes that consisted mostly of safety videos from the 1970s that put students to sleep combined with a few lectures on drinking and driving are gone. In some of those classes students only spent six hours behind the wheel. However states are reconsidering the education of teenage drivers. Urged by an increasing partnership of public school instructors and safety groups, new forms of driver's safety classes are coming into being. Some are experimenting with extended training. A pilot program combines initial driver's ed courses, six months behind the wheel un...

Saab: turbocharged small-capacity flexfuel engines key
2007-10-08 05:41:00 Potential benefits of biofuels seem obvious with a reduced carbon footprint being a key reason. But, as we've covered in the past, alcohol fuels such as ethanol can also increase the performance of an engine if the engine is optimized properly. Saab realizes this fact and is considering implementing the idea for future powertrains. The use of turbocharging can help take advantage of an engine running on ethanol and Saab has a history of force-feeding mass quantities of air into their engines. This being the case, it's not hard to understand why they might be interested in lowering the emissions of their engines by combining E85 capability with turbocharging. In so doing, they can actually reduce the displacement of the engine while still making the desired amount of power. They believe that this may be a short-term way to meet new emissions requirements while still delivering the driving experience that their customers desire. Saab sees hybrids as a potential long-term solution, ...

Hyundai RWD Turbocharged Coupe
2007-07-17 01:49:00 Having spent a week in the Hyundai Tiburon recently, I came to one conclusion, although it is a brilliant looking car, it can do with more power and a rear-wheel-drive setup. Thankfully the engineers at Hyundai agree! Say hello to the new Hyundai Rear-Wheel-Drive Tubrocharged Coupe: Details are sketchy so far but reports from Korea indicate two engine choices, a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with around 160kWs and a 3.8-litre V6 with around 206kWs. Fortunately the new Tiburon will be, for the first time, rear-wheel-drive! Not only will the Tiburon become the new 200SX, but it most likely skyrocket Hyundai into the serious performance car league! Reports also suggest the RWD Coupe will be larger than the current Tiburon, estimated to be roughly equivalent to the new Nissan Skyline (G35 Coupe). It will feature a start button, 19″ wheels plus the option for brembo brakes. As you can see from the picture below, the rotors appear gigantic! Release date is expected around ear...
