Today I went to a wonderful Turkish Restaurant in Victoria, Kazan, with colleagues from my old team at work. I was here for a Christmas do this time last year, and once again the food was absolutely excellent - a great plate of mezes to start including my favourite, houmous with little cubes of fried lamb and pine nut kernels. The main course was a mixed kebab with rice and salad, polished off

Turkish Delight: Göksel - Ay’da Yürüdüm
2007-10-24 12:51:00
Our third Turkish Delight comes from none other than Göksel, Turkey’s pop-electronica star who somehow manages to keep up her cred with the indie crowd. The album starts off with the light and sweet lead single “Yarabbi Şükür” and picks up the pace from there on, “TaÅŸ Bebek” being the most alternative song on the record. Good song writing, great production, throw in guest artists, rocker Teoman and hip-hopper Ferman, and you have in your hands the most exciting Turkish release of the year. Enjoy. 01. #23 - "A Fez of the Heart" by Jeremy SealBetween the bad-pun title and the fact that it was effectively purchased due to a ridiculous old in-joke, I wasn't expecting much from this one -- but after aging on my shelves for a long long time, lo and behold, it turned out to be pretty damned readable.Seal uses a search for the fez's origins as a launching pad for an exploration of modern Turkey -- and as gimmicky as that sounds, he pulls it off, mostly because the guy can really write. This just zipped along.A decade or so old (I think -- it's in the other room, and I can't really be bothered to walk the 15 feet to check), many of the struggles he finds in Turkey are as relevant as ever, especially in light of recent drama. I came away feeling a bit wiser, a bit more knowledgeable about Turkey, and I managed to knock it off in less than a day and still have time to clean the bathroom and drink beer.
Turkish Delight
2007-05-01 17:29:00
The final bit of catch up information is that I've been in NJ for a little while, visiting my parents, the hometown crew and some friends in the city. My time here has included things like discussing potential names for hypothetical babies (why no one will back me up on Elliot is beyond me), eating fantastic bagels and buying overpriced new job clothes at the Short Hills Mall. The highlight of this trip home was visiting the theatre where A Chorus Line is now playing, which just happens to be my all time favorite Broadway musical. My friend Kyle (the one who thought my Aussie crocodile photo was taken in the wild) works as a dresser for the show and gave me a backstage tour of the theatre when no one was there. I got to put on one of the Singular Sensation hats and stand on the stage, looking out the sea of empty seats. I'm sort of regretting not performing a smashing rendition of "Tits and Ass" for Kyle, but something tells me he wouldn't have fully appreciated it.For the next 2 ...

Bring it to boil over low fire and add the lemon juice. Keep on low fire and let it boil slowly. Dissolve the corn starch in 25 ml of water. Add slowly to the sugar syrup. Then, add the cream of tartar and mix. Keep the mixture on fire until you get a thick paste. Grease a rectangular tray with almond oil. Pour the mixture in it and let it cool down. Mix the corn starch with the sugar and sparkle the lokum with it. Grease a knife with almond oil and cut the lokum. First cut into slices, with the thickness of two fingers, and then in cubes. Then put each cube on the corn starch and sugar mixture in order to be very well sparkled. The Turkish delight is ready to be serv...
Turkish Delight
2007-02-15 15:57:04
Reay Tannahill suggests that the Persian confection ahbisa (jelly) was the ancestor of Turkish rahat lokum, the long name for the sweet. The etymology of the word lokum has puzzled linguists for many years; it seems to be a corruption of the Arabic word rahat-al hulkum, meaning the contentment of throat while in Ottoman Turkish it means a piece of contentment. So, “Turkish Delight” may not be far off.[1] The history of lokum dates back 230 years. Turkish legend has it that in his endeavour to quell the rumblings of discontent within his harem, a Turkish sultan summoned all his confectionery experts and ordered them to produce a unique dessert to add to the collection of secret recipes for which he was famous. As a result of extensive research, lokum was born. In 1776, during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid I, Bekir Effendi, a fully apprenticed confectioner, arrived in Istanbul from a small town in Anatolia. Bekir set up in a little shop in the center of the city, and qui...
